A word from the Conventa organiser

Miha Kovačič, Director of the Slovenian Convention Bureau and chief organizer of the Conventa exhibition

Southeast Europe is more! We are proud that Conventa 2013 will present ten countries onventa 2013 came to its fifth edition. It is not just another tradeshow as many might think. It is marketing event that has been carefully prepared by the group of professionals that are passionate for the success of the show who are actively supported by Conventa strategic partners, the supply chain of Conventa show and regional partners. Unfortunately I can not name them all as I would run out of space. They are all keen to welcome you and you will see they all understand meetings business and destination experience.

C

Conventa team has been working extremely hard to welcome at the show hosted buyers coming from most of the European countries that have potential interest of the region of South East Europe. As the organiser of the show we are aware that time is the biggest asset today. It is essential to maximise the time at the show with the aim to establish qualitative contacts with leading providers of services and solutions of the region of South East Europe.

Conventa will host again the Future Leaders Forum organised by IMEX/ MPI/MCI where over

50 interested students from the region of South East Europe will gain first hand experience and knowledge about the meetings industry. Lets hope that in the near future many of them will become meeting professionals and that we will be able welcome them at Conventa as exhibitors or hosted buyers. Conventa always wants to be ahead and also 2013 edition will offer interesting novelties. I am confident that they will raise interest among participants and enrich the tradeshow experience. Barbara Vajda, Managing Director, Ljubljana Tourism

HAPPY FIFTH ANNIVERSARY, CONVENTA! Ljubljana is a logistically stress-free conference destination s the host destination and a strong partner of the main organiser since its inception we, at Ljubljana Tourism, do not perceive the Conventa Show merely as an important regional meeting industry business event that has gradually established itself on the European market. There is also an emotional side to the story, as we have been involved in it from the very beginning and feel privileged to having been able to contribute to Conventa’s development on its way to maturity over the past few years.

A

Alongside, the meetings product in our city has experienced quite some positive changes, the highlights being the “Congress Ljubljana 2020” development policy, which involved the key suppliers in our city, as well as the creation of a more formal partnership, named the Ljubljana Strategic Bidding Team. This destination alliance, coordinated by the Ljubljana Convention Bureau, has brought together the entire meeting industry supply chain, now consisting of 24 partners, including the Slovenian Convention Bureau. We have joined forces with the strategic focus to attract more international association congresses with 500+ delegates and to generally increase Ljubljana’s competitiveness and visibility on the more and more demanding international market. Last, but not least, the ICCA statistics of international association meetings for 2011, published in 2012, has positioned Ljubljana as 50th on the global city ranking, which we consider a success. Over the last two years, Ljubljana has marked several notable anniversaries, hosted a

number of special cultural and other events of international significance, and saw the completion of some among the largest projects defined in its medium-term development strategy. A number of them, aimed at improving the city's functionality and the quality of life of its residents and visitors alike, are still underway in the city centre. The expansion of the trafficfree zone, the construction of underground parking garages, the gradual landscaping of the Ljubljanica riverbanks, which has just won the European Prize for Public Open Space 2012, and the further enforcement of green policies are among the projects included in the city's development vision and worked on intensively.

In the recent period, despite the impact of the global financial crisis, Ljubljana has seen significant investments in the renovation of existing conference and hotel facilities, as well as the opening of new boutique hotels. However, a city's image as a tourist and meeting destination is also shaped by the human dimension, which is what visitors from abroad, including delegates attending conferences and business meetings, appreciate highly in Ljubljana. Meeting planners often say that it is a logistically stress-free conference destination: due to the city’s compact size, meeting venues, accommodation facilities and many places of interest to delegates are conveniently found at a walking distance.

Ljubljana also has that extra something which makes people feel relaxed. A recent social experiment carried out by reporters of the Reader's Digest shows

Ljubljana to be the world's most honest city, the Forbes magazine ranked it fifth on the list of Europe's most idyllic places to live and it has also been proclaimed as the safest city in Eastern Europe. Furthermore, the warm welcome, hospitality and human touch that visitors experience when attending an event in our city and country have also received high ratings so far. And we always strive to offer an added value to the basic requirements, topped by an array of authentic experiences. We do hope that Conventa’s hosted buyers, business visitors and exhibitors alike will be able to confirm our view. In its distant history, Ljubljana has often been a bridge between East and West, and North to South. Ever since the time of the Romans, it was at the crossroads of these important routes. Now, with the Conventa Show, we feel honoured that our city functions as a meeting point again. Needless to say, we at Ljubljana Tourism and its Convention Bureau wish Conventa a Happy Birthday, a great success and a bright future in many years to come!

Marjan Hribar, MSc, General Director of the Directorate for Tourism and Internationalisation

Dear Conventa Participants Tourism infrastructure has been modernized his is the fifth edition of Conventa show, which signifies Conventa is a very successful project. It is a project that has proven its potential! Each year Conventa surpasses its scope by offering something new and fresh to confirm and strengthen its role as the central meeting industry event in South East Europe.

T

The majority of international meeting industry professionals visit Slovenia for the first time.

Hosting a modern and high quality event, ensuring a positive experience and impressions about Slovenia contribute to the fact the participants become international promoters of Slovenia. The Ministry of Economic Development and Technologies is very much aware of the importance of the meeting industry and the development opportunities it creates. Tourism infrastructure, including conference capacities, has been thoroughly modernized with the support of European Founds.

The Ministry granted the Slovenian Convention Bureau the ‘public interest’ status seeing it represents the meeting industry at the national level.

Each year the Ministry grants the Bureau together with the Slovenian Tourist Board annual support for its activities, which have proven to be well considered, efficient, modern and lasting. Therefore we will continue to encourage the work of the Slovenian Convention Bureau also in the future. From this year onward we act under patronage of "Spirit Slovenia" - Public Agency of Republic of Slovenia for Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Development, Investments and Tourism.

Spirit association brings together the Public Agency of Slovenia for Entrepreneurship and Foreign Investments, the Slovenian Tourist Board and the Public Agency for Technological Development. The aim of merger is promotion of Slovenian economy; whereas this quest for synergies is perfectly in line with the goals of the meeting industry.

CONVENTA HOT SPOTS 2013

In January 2013 the Conventa show celebrates its five-year anniversary. To mark the first editions of the main regional trade show, the Conventa programme is enriched with five novelties.

Presenting Conventa case study

Each edition of the Conventa show has made an important step in bringing together the meeting industry of South East Europe and securing its position on the global market. And in January we wish to celebrate our achievements with our meeting industry partners and friends.

CONVENTA HANDPRINT WALL To celebrate the five-year anniversary Conventa invites all participants to make their mark on the handprint wall. The meeting industry professionals, visiting the show, have turned the vision of a regional meeting industry trade show into reality. To commemorate this success we invite Conventa visitors to leave their handprint on the Conventa wall at GR – Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre. The Conventa handprint wall will therefore make a loving memory and freeze a wonderful piece of time.

Introducing Conventa mingling The first novelty arises from need for more networking opportunities at trade shows. This year the Conventa trade show therefore introduces Conventa mingling that is designed to accelerate business introductions. In the last hour of the show, the Conventa participants have the opportunity to exchange business cards and possibly additional information for a follow up meeting. In this manner Conventa participants can expand their pool of partners and gain additional exposure.

Launching Conventa Mayors’ Forum To politically highlight the economic and social impact the meeting industry has on destinations, Conventa invites mayors of South East Europe to attend the first Conventa Mayors’ Forum. The Forum provides an opportunity for mayors to participate in the discussions about the importance of meeting industry for the destinations and network with the participants. The Conventa Mayors’ Forum therefore hopes to strengthen the cooperation and consequently increase the impact of meetings and events on the economy of the destinations.

Hosting SEEPCO meeting The third novelty aims to strengthen cooperation between respective companies in the region to raise excellence in all destinations. Conventa therefore hosts the second SEEPCO meeting that connects South East European PCOs and gives them an opportunity to exchange experience and work together. In 2012 an initiative was given to establish SEEPCO, a voluntary non-profit professional organization that aims to extend the promotion of PCOs and strengthen their position in the region.

idea behind the show. The book launch and signing will be held at Conventa where Conventa participants will be the first to have a chance to get their hands on the new edition.

Tony Rogers, Managing Director of Tony Rogers Conference & Event Services Ltd and Visiting Fellow to the UK Centre for Events Management at Leeds Metropolitan University, will launch a new edition of his book ‘Conferences and Conventions: A Global Industry’ at Conventa. This new, third edition of the book, that provides a comprehensive, in-depth analysis of the international conference industry, will also include 2 Conventa case studies showing the business model and

Turkish is an agglutinative language that forms new words by adding to the existing suffix and prefix. So many sentences can be told with only one - a very long - word. LJUBLJANA The most beautiful city in the world

Ljubljana has comparative advantages and the experience necessary to occupy a better position in the market of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe in particular. Analysis of the relevance and effectiveness of competitiveness factors of the convention destination, Ljubljana reveals that the location factor, conference facilities and outside congress activities, are assessed as successful and are at the same time important for the competitiveness of the destination. Ljubljana less successfully meets the criteria of accessibility, quality of service, information or image, local support, accommodation facilities, which are all rated as very important factors of competitiveness. Given that it is precisely these criteria that play an extremely important role in choosing the destination and hence its positioning on the international market, they should be given more attention in the future.

Congress infrastructure

4.7

These are rated highly since Ljubljana is an appealing and attractive tourist destination with a developed infrastructure and cultural offer as well as high experiential value. The focus of this is the Ljubljana castle and the medieval town. Given the size of the city, it has an exceptional cultural and historical diversity with over 15 museums, 41 galleries, 10 theatres and experientially diverse and varied natural hinterland.

Most of investments in the tourism sector in recent years were aimed at improving the congress infrastructure. With two top-level convention centres and a very well developed hotel meetings offer, Ljubljana is the region’s leading congress destination. Also positive is the operation of the Ljubljana Convention Bureau. Among weaknesses we could count fluctuations in the quality of service and lack of hotels availability in the largest peak times.

General and transport infrastructure

Subjective grade

Natural and cultural factors

4.4

4.1

Through history the city has expanded organically and, consequently, the overall proportion of infrastructure and transport is solidly regulated. Among the major shortcomings are still the bad airline availability, the unused railway infrastructure and poorly controlled stationary traffic. The city is extremely safe and in the region one of the most sustainably-oriented. 4.4

In the past the tourist offer developed around business tourists, so in Ljubljana hotels are missing a truly superior luxury hotel and recognisable international hotel chains. In the range from 2 to 4 stars, the offer is wide and attractive enough. The restaurant offer is solid, especially in Ljubljana there are many green spaces that offer plenty of opportunities for sports and recreational activities and incentive programmes.

4.4

Mostly Ljubljana makes a good first impression, which is partially due to the consequence of the burden with ‘”apriority” conceptions in the light of the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Instead they find a congress destination which friendly and favourable to the congress industry while competitive in terms of price and quality at the same time. Among all regional capitals it also has a very good image that has also been strengthened thanks to the Conventa Trade Show. Comparison with the region: According to its conference and accommodation infrastructure, Ljubljana belongs to the group of capitals suitable for medium-sized and smaller meetings (up to 2.500 participants). It is positioned side by side with the new EU member states and geographically in the region of the Western Balkans. Thus, according to congress stakeholders in Ljubljana the most competitive destinations are Zagreb, Belgrade, Prague and Budapest. Compared to the newer EU capitals and countries of South East Europe, Ljubljana is ranked in the second half. It is preceded by Budapest and Vilnius, and we should also highlight the rapid growth of Belgrade. While most countries and cities in Europe, including New York, recorded a minimal decrease in the number of congresses, the cities in our immediate vicinity, mainly from South East Europe, recorded a fall on a smaller scale or record growth. At the end of last year in order to give Ljubljana a new sales and promotional momentum, a partnership called Ljubljana Strategic Bidding Team (LSBT), was established; it is composed of interested partners from both the private and public area.

GRAZ Second city first

International Congress guests, probably because of the mighty shadow of Vienna, do not expect much of Graz, but in the end, they are pleasantly surprised. Graz has for many years been a model of congress destination marketing and management. If we look from the perspective of public and private infrastructure, Graz is the most developed regional convention destination. Only five years ago regional competitors would qualify behind the second largest Austrian city, but recently the gap has been significantly reduced. The new capitals on the territory of the former Yugoslavia have taken from it its supremacy and because of this, on the ICCA scale it is now ranked on lower places. The centre of culture, cuisine, design, creativity, technology and much more, which embodies Graz is far from saying the last congress word.

Graz is in the centre of the green heart of Austria, which gives it a character of interplay between forests, of planar Graz fields and majestic mountains, crossing in the wine-growing hills. Cultural diversity, rich history and connecting river Mura have formed a highly experiential diversity, which is reflected in the many opportunities for congress and incentive organisers and is therefore among the highest ranked in the region.

Concerning the infrastructure Graz is still the leading regional convention destination. With more than 154 congress events and 46,000 participants it achieves excellent results and is stable on charts ranking international events. Graz can be regarded as felicitous convention destination, which is a modern, dynamic and internationally competitive. It is difficult to challenge it of any serious errors, just slightly poorer image on the international scene.

General and transport infrastructure

Subjective grade

Natural and cultural factors

4.5

4.2

Transport and general infrastructure in Graz is excellent and according to results of the evaluation the best in the region. A network of public transport is very well organised, the city has over 120 kilometres of bicycle lanes and parking system is excellently arranged. It all appears very professional and tidy, also remarkable is the sense of security with a high level of environmental responsibility and awareness of the population. Tourist infrastructure

4.3

Graz is a mature tourist destination that despite the crisis records a steady growth of over-night stays and tourist arrivals in all tourism segments. This is due to a very clear positioning of the city on three pillars as the capital of culture, cuisine and knowledge. Graz has established itself as a base for exploring Styria, which gives it an additional marketing momentum.

4.3

Environmental responsibility, orderly surroundings and infrastructure, cultural infrastructure, city of design and creative industries are all ideal humus for the development of congress tourism. City, key stakeholders and policies do not lack creativity and strategic vision. Despite all positive projects maybe it lacks some charisma of a capital, making it need much energy to fight even more successfully on the international convention scene. Otherwise, a beautiful and practical convention destination. Comparison with the region: Being the first is sometimes difficult. Graz was among the first to develop the brand of the destination, congress grants and many other marketing innovations, from which other regional convention bureaus drew inspiration. However, former pupils have caught up and in the field of branding and in some other areas they have even moved ahead of their teacher. Graz may not be the most seductive convention destination, however, it could be highlighted that Graz and Styria live with congress tourism throughout the year. To this a well developed infrastructure and additional offer throughout the year, where tradition combines with the present, and where everyone can find an offer to their taste, their needs and their budget. Graz with the focus on green meetings will definitely find a right answer to the ubiquitous crisis, which has not bypassed even the congress tourism.

ZAGREB White Zagreb town

Zagreb generally makes a good impression on the visitor. The impression is sometimes interrupted by ragged facades and sporadic traffic chaos, which is the result of the
size of the city. Generally, the city is safe, clean, comfortable and friendly to congress participants. The good ratio between price and quality is especially attractive; this has
a positive impact on the competitiveness of the destination. It is not surprising that in the last year Zagreb has become a true hit on the Croatian tourist scene and no longer just a transit stop on the way to the Adriatic. With proper marketing and the development of network of partners, Zagreb will continue
to position itself as the leading Croatian and regional convention destination. As its main advantage, I would highlight the compactness and high quality of hotel accommodation, which combined with cultural and historical heritage, is the formula for success. Everything is seasoned with the right dose of metropolitan character and friendliness of the locals.

Its rich natural and cultural heritage and the position of the Croatian capital have enabled Zagreb intensive development in tourism. Recently, Zagreb has profited as a destination of culture with individual museums that have the potential to become world attractions, such as the unique Museum of Failed Relationships.

General and transport infrastructure

4.0

In the last ten years Croatia has radically improved road infrastructure and thus its accessibility. Significantly improved is also air accessibility via Zagreb Airport, which accepts over 40% of all air traffic in Croatia. We would, however, like to see an early construction of the new airport building as the existing one is strongly outdated. Currently, Zagreb is lagging behind in rail infrastructure the most. According to municipal infrastructure, local transport and sense of security, Zagreb can be classified into a golden class among competing European cities. Tourist infrastructure

4.5

The hotel infrastructure with new acquisitions fully satisfies modern congress guests and is perhaps at this moment the best among regional capitals. The fact that the tourist infrastructure is good and that the marketing of the destination also works well is also confirmed by the good results, which show a 5% growth despite the global recession. Meetings infrastructure

4.1

In Croatia, Zagreb has a dominant image of a business as well as a major congress destination. This has also been adapted by the offer of hotels with excellent congress facilities. A somewhat worse score than competitive cities of the region is due to the fact that Zagreb is without a convention centre, construction of which has been heralded since the public tender, which was completed in 2007. Subjective grade

4.2

In the region, Zagreb managed to best maintain the Central European culture that is reminiscent of Vienna and creates a special atmosphere. In addition, it is a ‘pocket-friendly destination’ that offers a lot for reasonable money. It is the ideal combination of a metropolis with charm and a small town atmosphere. Comparison with the region: I predict a great congress future for Zagreb. I estimate that in the international congress market it is well established and in addition to Ljubljana and Belgrade it represents the future backbone of the continental congress tourism of the region. All three cities are progressing steadily on the charts of developed meetings destinations; the final breakthrough of the entire region is intertwined and dependent on the marketing of major regional congress cities in the international market.

Firstly, it is about the quality of services, as well as about marketing that was excellently prepared around the hotel and is reflected in its increased profile. According to the World Travel Awards jury, something of a tourism Oscar, the hotel earned the 2011 award for being the leading Croatian hotel and spa resort. At the same time, we wonder whether they are eligible for other prizes. After visiting the hotel, it is clear that the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace deserved the award; to the highest category it does not lack much, and depending on the assessment we ranked it among the top premium congress hotels in the region, where the emphasis is not only on the environment but on quality. In almost all respects a modern hotel and definitely a good choice among the many options in Dubrovnik. FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES Guests accustomed to 5-star standard would expect a slightly higher standard in the rooms and especially the bathrooms and upon arrival at hotel (concierge).

Viidea - Publishing lecture videos online

Strawberry Energy

Conference organization and academic publishing business is on the cusp of a major transformation. In a few years, printed proceedings paper publishing is going to give way to online lecture videos. Once the technology solves the problems of effortlessly re-creating genuine lecture hall experience, every conference organizer will seek for ways to extend their business and put their conferences online. In the process of publishing more than 10,000 lecture videos online, Viidea had already figured out the optimal recipe to bring extra long-term value to event organizers and help them assess the power of social networking, while providing visitors a rich and engaging online lecture watching experience that gives them full control of their time and attention. www.viidea.com

We are living in the digital connected world where there are more than 5 billion mobile phones and over 300 million music players. Considering that this number will increase rapidly in the future, Strawberry energy created “Strawberry Mini” as a portable solar charger for mobile devices such as mobile phones, iPad/iPad, MP3 players, digital cameras... “Strawberry Mini” collects energy from the Sun and transforms it into electrical, thus enabling passersby to charge their batteries for free. Thanks to its smaller size, wheels and lack of need for an external power source, it is ideal for almost any location. It has embedded touch screens which enables to users to play games, while waiting the few minutes for their batteries to recharge. To make the whole experience more interactive, Strawberry energy in cooperation with Serbia Convention Bureau have initiated “Strawberry Events” concept, aiming MICE industry. We found an interesting way to make destination marketing more “renewable” by installing this eco-greenad platform. www.senergy.rs
