Authentic tastes, goods and culture of Ohio’s Amish
Holmes County is home to the world’s largest Amish community, and the cultural experiences available here are unlike any elsewhere. Our region is perhaps as famous for its Amish and Mennonite heritage as it is for its

home-style food. The rich flavors and recipes that have been passed from one generation to the next are reminiscent of family feasts. Our quilts, most of which are locally made and one-of-a90
kind, are world famous for their wonderful patterns. With a wealth of craftsmen, our region is also a great place All the photos used on the cover and this page were submitted to our Photo Contest. and Winesburg to the handmade items found in towns throughout the county, you can expect a memorable shopping experience in Holmes County. It is quite safe to say the Amish would feel a keen disappointment if visitors leaving Holmes County would remember them only for their thrifty farms, quilts and crafts. Instead they would desire a deeper understanding of their Christian beliefs, which is silently portrayed by their simple lifestyle. Charming bed and breakfasts, friendly people and scenic drives throughout – the comfortable pace in Holmes County is reason enough to visit and stay awhile.

how to use the Visitors’ Guide Scenic Byways: Nearly every mile of state and federal highway in Holmes County is designated as an Amish Country Byway. This means enjoyable views wherever you go, but drive carefully. It also means other people will be looking at the scenery as well. Using GPS: Coordinates are listed for each destination in “degrees” format, which can be entered into most GPS systems. Most map programs work better when abbreviated routes are written out (SR is State Route, CR is County Road, TR is Township Road). Many GPS units will not recognize “Township Road” or “County Road.” This can be solved by using “Highway” instead of “Road.” Chamber of Commerce Members: The business listings are members of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau. These businesses sponsor this publication and are highly recommended by the Chamber of Commerce. L5
Map Codes: The countywide map contains coordinates so it’s easy to locate attractions. These coordinates are shown beside the title for each listing and are color-coded to correspond to the business location and category on the large map.
Sun Sunday: The symbol Sun means the business is open, either to
new business or to overnight customers on-site. Hours may be limited; Sunday is a day of rest and worship in Amish Country. Handicap Accessible: Businesses with this symbol have ramps or other accessibility features. WiFi: Businesses with this symbol offer Wi-Fi at their location. Check with each business to confirm Wi-Fi network names, restrictions or passwords, if required. Share the Road: Sharing the road with buggies and farm equipment is often new to tourists. To enjoy a safe trip in Amish Country, please follow these guidelines: • Normal speeds for horse-drawn buggies range between 5-7 mph, even slower when pulling large farm equipment or when crossing intersections. • Use caution and avoid accelerating at the top of hills. • Amish Country’s winding roads can create blind curves; drive slowly. • Vision from the driver of a horse-drawn vehicle or farm machinery may be restricted, and drivers may not be able to see cars behind them. • Car drivers should anticipate left-hand turns made by horsedrawn vehicles into fields and driveways. If a driver’s left arm is fully extended this is a left-hand turn signal – not a signal for you to pass. • Leave room between your vehicle and a buggy stopped at a stop sign or light. Horses may back up a few feet after coming to a complete stop. • Use your headlights in any circumstance of impaired vision. Passing buggies • When passing on rural roads, keep in mind the road may be narrower than city streets. Loose gravel can be hazardous and open ditches along rural roads are often deep and close to the road. Pass slowly only when safe and on a reasonably open stretch of road. • It is illegal to pass a buggy or slow-moving vehicle on roadway marked with a solid yellow line unless: the slower vehicle is 14
proceeding at less than half the speed of the speed limit, the faster vehicle is capable of overtaking and passing the slower vehicle without exceeding the speed limit, AND there is sufficient clear sight distance to the left of the center or center line of the roadway (ORC – 4511.31). Use extreme caution when passing and never cross the median into oncoming traffic. Cell phone signals: Verizon service is reliable in most parts of Holmes County, but many other carriers are on roaming or are unable to find a signal in our region. Please check with your cell phone service provider for local area coverage.

Amish Country Ambassadors Interested in finding the place where locals go to eat? Need directions to a gas station? Looking for a dose of
Amish culture that will put a smile on your grandchild’s face? Ask us, the Amish Country Ambassadors! A volunteer team made up of local individuals who have lived and worked in Holmes County for years, we are identified by our yellow aprons or “Ask me” buttons. Whether helping you locate an item in our stores or directing you to a location around town, the Amish Country Ambassadors are
The Amish and Mennonites are an outgrowth of the 16th century Anabaptist movement in Europe. During the Swiss Protestant Reformation, this group of people was considered radical for rejecting infant baptism and mandatory military service. They immigrated to America in hope of religious freedom. Having crossed the Alleghenies by covered wagon, here they settled, farmed, and grew, until today their descendents in Holmes County constitute the largest community of Amish in the world. From Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the first people of Amish faith came to Ohio and settled in Sugarcreek in 1808. Amishman, Jonas Stutzman was the first white man to settle in eastern Holmes County, making his homestead in Walnut Creek in 1809. Today 36,000-38,000 Amish live in a five-county region (Holmes, Wayne, Ashland, Tuscarawas, and Coshocton) with their population doubling about every 16 years.
ready to guide you in the right direction.
The Amish and the Mennonites
Think of us as your concierge service for Amish Country.
The Mennonite faith began first, with the Amish sect splitting 150 years later, led by Jacob Amman, to enforce stricter discipline with regard to communion and excommunication. Although the Mennonite movement came first, most Holmes County Mennonite churches were formed by former Amish community members.
We are located throughout the region, at hotels, restaurants, shops and other visitor attractions. So when you see us, say hello! And let us know how we can help make your visit one that you will remember for
Today there are close to a dozen variations and sects among the Amish and Mennonites from very conservative in their beliefs and dress to those who dress and live much like the non-Amish. The most conservative is the Swartzentruber sect, who live as people did in 19th century Europe. This group will not ride in vehicles and thus must work at home or close enough that they can travel by horse. The largest group, the “Old Order,” travel by buggy or as a passenger in a vehicle, and as a whole, do without modern conveniences and technologies. The most progressive of the Amish sects are the “New Order Amish” who do not drive cars, but may have electricity and telephones in their homes. Although some Mennonites dress in a conservative fashion, many dress and live like modern society.

Voluntary, adult baptism is seen as a personal faith commitment.
Amish Country Etiquette
Peace and reconciliation are central to Christ’s life and message; defending oneself with violence is not an option.
While the Amish staunchly guard their identity as a people “separate from the world,” they enjoy competing in the marketplace, often offering exceptional goods and services at competitive prices. Most, speaking in a distinct German accent, enjoy interacting with non-Amish. Young Amish children, not yet familiar with the English language, typically watch in quiet awe at the sight of unfamiliar people.
There must be separation of Church and State. Christians should live in distinction from the world around them.
Amish and Education There were no Amish schools before the 1950s. In earlier days, when one-room schoolhouses were common, Amish children attended these public schools, which emphasized rural values and basic skills. With consolidation of such schools into districts and more “worldly” studies, the Amish established their own parochial system of one-room schools in which students are taught by Amish teachers. Today there are 95 Amish parochial schools in Holmes County. In addition to the parochial schools, about 40% of Amish children attend public schools. The Amish do not believe in the value of education James Williamson, photo contest finalist beyond the eighth grade. In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court in 1972, ruled that the Amish and related groups were exempt from the state compulsory attendance laws beyond the eighth grade
Amish and Technology Adaptations of progress and technology grow out of life needs and experiences, and once approved by the Bishop and church leadership, define the “ordnung” – the set of rules that governs almost all aspects of Amish life. In general, the Amish avoid new technologies that they believe will erode the family structure or create inequalities or divisions in their community. Unlike the Old Order and New Order, who have adapted to compete in today’s market, the strictest sect, the Swartzentruber, are forbidden the use of power tools or to hire a driver to go to a jobsite. In cases where modernization is allowed, it is permitted with constraints. For example, some groups permit a lawn mower, but it may not be a riding mower. A church may allow those in the congregation who own businesses to use cell phones, with limitations. What might seem to be a contradiction to some,
Booking an Amish culture tour or visiting Amish-owned businesses are good ways of interacting with the Amish without infringing on their lifestyle. The Amish religion forbids posing for pictures and use of cameras for personal photography. Please do not photograph the Amish, especially if their faces are visible. Consider how you might feel if a stranger took your picture without your permission.
Dress In keeping with the scripture, “Be not conformed to the world,” the Amish adhere to strict rules regarding garb and lifestyle. Rejecting worldly fashions, they embrace centuries-old traditions of plain and simple clothing, free from adornment; their peasant-type garb reflects humility and commitment to their Anabaptist heritage. Ohio Amish men grow their beards, without a mustache, at the time they join the church, typically in their early 20s. A frequent misconception is that the men grow their beards when they marry; however, an Amish person must join the church in order to be married and often grows his beard in preparation. Bonnets and prayer caps: Derived from the writing of Apostle Paul, the Amish hold to the belief that women should always have their heads covered with a prayer covering, signifying their acceptance of God’s order of authority in the home. This is a thin white organdy cap with strings either tied or untied. The hard black bonnet worn in public by women and girls is worn over an organdy covering and actually serves as weather protection. Often a heavier one is worn in the winter, and a lighter one is worn in the summer. Bonnets and prayer caps vary greatly in style among the various sects of Amish and Mennonites. An Amish man and woman’s Sunday best. The woman’s white cape and apron are worn for church only.
