Using the Visitors’ Guide, Roads & Technology Chamber of Commerce Members:
Share the Road:
The business listings are members of the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau. These businesses sponsor this publication and are highly recommended by the Chamber of Commerce
Sharing the road with buggies and farm equipment is often new to tourists. To enjoy a safe trip in Amish Country, please follow these guidelines: ● Normal speeds for horse-drawn buggies range between 5-7 mph, even slower when pulling large farm equipment or when crossing intersections. ● Use caution and avoid accelerating at the top of hills. ● Amish Country’s winding roads can create blind curves; drive slowly. ● Vision from the driver of a horse-drawn vehicle or farm machinery may be restricted, and drivers may not be able to see cars behind them. ● Car drivers should anticipate left-hand turns made by horsedrawn vehicles into fields and driveways. If a driver’s left arm is fully extended this is a left-hand turn signal – not a signal for you to pass. ● Leave room between your vehicle and a buggy stopped at a stop sign or light. Horses may back up a few feet after coming to a complete stop.
Sunday: The symbol “Sun” means the business is open, either to new business or to overnight customers on-site. Hours may be limited; Sunday is a day of rest and worship in Amish Country.
Wi-Fi: Businesses with this symbol offer Wi-Fi at their location. Check with each business to confirm Wi-Fi network names, restrictions or passwords, if required.
Handicap Accessible:
Passing buggies: When passing on rural roads, keep in mind the road may be narrower than city streets. Loose gravel can be hazardous. Pass slowly only when safe and on a reasonably open stretch of road. ● It is illegal to pass a buggy or slow-moving vehicle on a roadway marked with a solid yellow line unless: the slower vehicle is proceeding at less than half the speed of the speed limit, the faster vehicle is capable of overtaking and passing the slower vehicle without exceeding the speed limit, AND there is sufficient clear sight distance to the left of the center or center line of the roadway (ORC – 4511.31).
Businesses with this symbol have ramps or other accessibility features.
Pet Friendly: Businesses with this symbol allow common household pets into their establishment. H7
Map Codes: The countywide map contains coordinates so it’s easy to locate attractions. These coordinates are shown beside each listing in the Index. The letter/number combination found next to the business listing corresponds to the business location on the large map found in the centerfold.
Scenic Byways:
Cell phone signals: Verizon service is reliable in most parts of Holmes County, but many other carriers are on roaming or are unable to find a signal in our region. Please check with your cell phone service provider for local area coverage.
Important Information:
Nearly every mile of state and federal highway in Holmes County is designated as an Amish Country Scenic Byway. This means enjoyable views wherever you go, but drive carefully. It also means other people will be looking at the scenery as well.
Using GPS: Most map programs work better when abbreviated routes are written out (SR is State Route, CR is County Road, TR is Township Road). Many GPS units will not recognize “Township Road” or “County Road.” This can be solved by using “Highway” instead of “Road.”

“No Sunday Sales” When you visit Amish Country, you’re engaging an authentic culture with deeply held beliefs. Visitors are sometimes frustrated when that affects their experience in our region on Sundays, when no-Sunday-sales signs abound. Amish folks are known for their work ethic. Whether they’re farmers, wood workers, housewives or shop owners, they work hard to support their families, keep their homes and shops neat and tidy, and follow the will of God. For six days of the week, Amish and Mennonite families follow the biblical teachings that say, “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat,” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). The scriptures also command “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). That’s why there’s a feeling of true obligation and responsibility to do a good job, provide high-quality products and work to the best of your ability. However, in Exodus, Chapter 20, the Bible also says, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.” And they take that just as seriously. Therefore, Amish-owned and many Mennonite-owned businesses are closed on Sundays and other holy days. You can expect these businesses also to recognize Old Christmas on Jan. 6; Good Friday; Ascension Day, which is the 40th day of Easter; Thanksgiving; Christmas and New Year’s Day. If you drive through Amish Country on Sunday, you’ll see large gatherings of black buggies at Amish homes. Since church is held in the home, members take turns as the host. With approximately 30 families in a church district, Old Order Amish church is held every other Sunday. The in-between Sunday is reserved for visiting other churches, family time and rest. Mennonite churches also dot the countryside. They hold church every week and welcome visitors. Please feel free to worship with them while you’re here.
24 | Ohio Amish Country ● 2018 Map & Visitors Guide
There’re still lots of fun things to do in our region on Sundays, often without the crowds of Fridays and Saturdays. ● Many of the antique stores and galleries in Historic Downtown Millersburg are open on Sunday. Browse these shops for housewares, tools, cabinetry, garden finds, jewelry and much more. ● The Victorian House Museum, a 28-room Victorian mansion in Millersburg, is a great Sunday afternoon destination. Featured on HGTV and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Victorian House also houses the largest public display of Millersburg Glass. ● Explore the Holmes County Rails to Trails, a one-of-a-kind paved trail that winds through gorgeous scenery and provides passage for Amish buggies, equestrians, bicyclists, hikers, walkers and more. ● Local golf courses Fire Ridge or Willandale provide an excellent Sunday diversion. ● Ride horses at the Amish Country Ridging Stables in Charm. Experienced guides lead you through breathtaking countryside. ● Get your adrenaline pumping in Mohican Country, just to our west. They offer canoeing, kayaking, tubing, zip lining and other outdoor recreation. Don’t miss beautiful Mohican State Park for hiking, picnicking and horseback riding. ● Fuel your Sunday excursion with tasty fare from Bags Sports Pub, Chalet in the Valley, Guggisberg Cheese, Fox’s Pizza Den, Pine Tree Barn, Route 83 Restaurant, Rodhe’s IGA Marketplace, or Tarragon at the Inn at Honey Run. ● Finally, go for an old-fashioned Sunday drive. Nearly every mile of state and federal highway in Holmes County is designated as a National Scenic Byway. That means you can expect spectacular vistas and views of our rolling countryside, no matter what route you take.
Home-Grown Home Cooking Amish families grow much of their own food in large gardens, which are as beautiful as they are practical. So, we’re in tune with the seasons, relishing short-lived delights like fresh asparagus, dandelion gravy, strawberries, peaches, corn-on-the-cob, sunripened tomatoes, apple cider and so much more. If you’re lucky enough to visit when one of our local favorites is in season, take the time to visit roadside produce stands. Seeking fresh produce directly from the farms where it’s grown is an adventure in itself, with a mouthwatering reward. For more centralized offerings, visit places like the Moreland Fruit Farm, Hershbergers Farm & Bakery, Troyer’s Country Market, Walnut Creek Cheese or Rodhe’s IGA Marketplace, all of which carry local, in-season produce. Another group of immigrants settled amongst the Amish and Mennonites who made their homes in our rolling hills. Swiss cheesemakers followed the Anabaptists to Holmes County, where they were sure to find a reliable, high-quality supply of milk to support their hand-crafted, artisan cheese making. With names like Dauwalder, Guggisberg and Ramseyer, these Swiss cheesemakers today craft more than 80 kinds of cheese, winning state and national awards. If you pair these cheeses with locally crafted meats like Troyer’s Genuine Trail Bologna or summer sausage from Winesburg Meats, you’re beginning to eat like a local. Don’t miss the specialties served up in our restaurants. Broasted chicken, mashed potatoes, Amish noodles, homemade dressing (called stuffing in other parts of the country), and fresh-baked pies are worth the trip. To eat like a native, heap your noodles on top of your mashed potatoes, with a side of homemade applesauce.
In May, dandelion gravy is on the menu. This tangy, salty gravy made from fresh dandelion greens includes bacon and hard-boiled eggs. Locals debate whether to eat it over mashed, fried or boiled potatoes. It’s an old-fashioned, regional favorite. Across Amish Country, you’ll find authentic bakeries galore. In the fall, grape pies abound. Whether baked or cream-based, these fruity pastries explode with autumn flavor. Any time of year, you can indulge in another local treat: fry pies. Hand-size, half-moons, these pastries come in every fruit flavor under the sun: raspberry, apple, peach, elderberry, blueberry, lemon, blackberry and on it goes. Look for the extra indulgence of flavors that come with cream cheese in the filling. Cream sticks, cream pies, fruit pies, cinnamon rolls, pumpkin rolls, cookies, doughnuts, crumb cakes, cupcakes, whoopie pies, date pudding, homemade bread, dinner rolls and other baked delectables are worth the trip. For chocolatey goodness, visit Holmes County’s premier chocolatier Coblentz Chocolates. Salted caramels, dark chocolate almond bark, buckeyes, truffles, creamfills, and innumerable other delicacies are produced onsite. Be sure to visit the viewing gallery to watch artisans craft these mouthwatering treats. Our culture takes food seriously. It nourishes hard workers, gathers families together, anchors church carry-ins, sustains Amish church goers, celebrates weddings, observes holidays, and rewards success. Celebrate your own family’s milestones around the table in Amish Country.

32 | Ohio Amish Country ● 2018 Map & Visitors Guide
Nightlife Amish Country provides peace and quiet, a welcome respite from the frantic pace of daily life. We encourage visitors to unwind, unplug and take a deep breath. Enjoy the scenery. Reconnect with family and friends. Our version of nightlife differs from cities and suburbs. Our night lights include fireflies dancing across undulating fields of alfalfa. The soundtrack to an evening in the country features the clip clop of horses and the rattling of tack, the soft lowing of cattle settled in for the night, and the symphony of peepers chirping from the edges of rippling creeks. But that’s not all we offer. Once you’ve drunk your fill of our tranquil evenings, you might feel the need for deep belly laughs, or inspiring music, or captivating storylines. Thankfully, you’re in luck. With two of Ohio’s premier theaters within miles of each other, you can take your pick of inspiring entertainment. The Amish Country Theater has relocated into a newly constructed, state-of-the-art 600-seat theater on the eastern side of Berlin. Their variety shows feature comedy that’s guaranteed to entertain the whole family. The interactive performances include live music, hilarious actors, magicians, clean family comedians, homemade concessions, souvenirs, and a great atmosphere. The American Bus Association ranked them as a Top-100 Event
in America. When you laugh until tears roll down your cheeks, you’ll understand why. Just down the road, on the eastern side of Sugarcreek in Dutch Valley, the newly constructed, 500-seat, high-tech Ohio Star Theater provides a host of entertainment. Currently playing live musicals, concerts and comedians, the Ohio Star Theater is the place to let your heart sing and your spirit soar. From unforgettable characters to non-stop laughter, experience professionally produced musical and comedy entertainment. Spend a fun-filled, family-friendly day or evening enjoying a memorable performance at the Ohio Star Theater. While you’re in Amish Country, be sure to check out our calendar of events. Festivals such as Harvest Fest in Berlin or the Holmes County Antique Festival in Millersburg offer evening entertainment after fun, activity-filled days. During the summer, Berlin also provides Music on the Square every Friday and Saturday evening, weather permitting. And the Hotel Millersburg features a variety of musical groups on the weekends in their outdoor courtyard. Swissters in Sugarcreek also presents musical performances. Whether you spend your evenings appreciating the peace and quiet of the countryside, or enjoying invigorating entertainment, you’ll find it here in Ohio Amish Country.

Grandmother’s Date Pudding
Ingredients For the cake 1 cup chopped dates 1 tablespoon baking soda 1 cup boiling water 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 egg, beaten 1 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla 1/8 teaspoon salt For the whipped cream 1 pint heavy whipping cream 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Instructions
Date pudding is an Amish and Mennonite family favorite. There are many variations. My husband’s family tops the finished pudding with caramel sauce. Others add bananas. This is my grandmother’s recipe, and one of my dad’s very favorite holiday desserts. We always add extra whipped cream and chopped walnuts. — Shasta Mast, Holmes County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau’s Executive Director
For the cake: Grease a 9-inch square cake pan. Set aside. In a large bowl, sprinkle baking soda over chopped dates. Pour the boiling water over date mixture. Let cool. Add the rest of the cake ingredients and mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan, and bake in a 350◦ oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool. For the whipped cream: Begin beating heavy whipping cream with electric or hand beaters. When the cream starts to thicken, add sugar and vanilla. Continue to beat until peaks form. Assemble the pudding: Cut cooled cake into one-inch squares and put the squares into a large bowl. Carefully fold in whipped cream. Garnish with chopped walnuts if desired.

Our Heritage We are grateful for your interest in Ohio Amish Country. This area, and our people have a unique story to share with you. When you view our tranquil countryside, experience our beautiful craftsmanship, and enjoy our delicious food, you become a part of that story. For that we say thank you! Here are some basic facts about our home: ● This community is known as the Holmes County Amish Community, but in fact, has grown to include parts of six surrounding counties. ● The first Amish settled here in 1809 along the Sugar and Walnut creeks. Today there are about 330,000 Amish in the world, with about 35,000 of those living in the Holmes County Community. The Holmes County Amish Community doubles in population about every 20 years. ● The Amish speak Pennsylvania Dutch, a language that has its roots in southern Germany, and is not to be confused with the Dutch spoken in the Netherlands. It has been used since their entry into America in the 1730s-1750s and has not been “refreshed” by later waves of immigration. It is amazingly similar to when they emigrated. ● There are four main Amish affiliations in this community: the New Order, the Old Order, the Andy Weaver Church, and the Swartzentruber Amish. While some of the differences may be apparent to visitors, many are defined by internal distinctions. The Old Order is the largest group in our community.
The Amish & Mennonites The Amish and Mennonites of Holmes County trace their spiritual heritage back to the Protestant Reformation of the early 1500s. A small group of dissidents arose, who argued that leaders such as Martin Luther in Germany and Ulrich Zwingli in Switzerland did not go far enough in separating the church and state. Up to this time, the government and the church were inseparable. These dissidents agreed with many of the basic premises of the Protestant reforms, like justification by grace through faith, but thought that further reform was warranted. At that time, all infants were baptized, which made them members of the church and citizens of the state. The dissidents felt that only Christians who could voluntarily and freely choose the way of Christ should be baptized and part of the church. In 1525 a small group of them met and re-baptized each other. They became known in German as wieder-tauffers, or rebaptizers. The authorities soon termed them Anabaptists, to denote their position on adult and voluntary baptism. By the 1550s these people were beginning to be called Mennonites after leader Menno Simons. The Mennonites refused to join the state church and were viewed as a great danger to not only the religious structure of Europe, but also the social structure, as they preached their gospel of grace and equality for anyone who was willing to follow the way of Christ. In the next 100 years many were persecuted, and about 10,000 were martyred for their belief that Jesus led
the way into a life of separation, humility and love. Today the Amish, Mennonites, and Hutterites trace their heritage back to these brave dissidents. The Anabaptists faced periodic purges as leaders and dynasties rose and fell in northern Europe. By the late 1600s many lived in the Rhine Valley in southern Germany where they experienced relative freedoms, farmed lands, and lived in small villages. A young Anabaptist leader, named Jakob Amman, called for a renewal of the commitment to a more separate way of living. He soon led the more conservative-minded element within the Anabaptists into a separation from the larger group. Since he was the spokesperson for the group his followers became known as Ammanischeleut, or Amman-minded people. This was later shortened to Ammanisch and even later into the more modern Amish.
Belief and Lifestyle: Today in our community we work together as Amish and Mennonites, holding basic beliefs in common. ● First, Anabaptists believe Christianity is about discipleship and a willingness to follow Christ at any cost. ● Second, they believe non-resistance or pacifism is the answer to conflict. Most Amish and Mennonites refuse service in the military. Instead, during times when the draft was in use they served as conscientious objectors, providing meaningful service without the use of force. How can a visitor tell whether the person they meet is Amish or Mennonite? All Amish have rejected the ownership of automobiles as their primary form of locomotion. Instead, they use the iconic horse-drawn buggy or wagon. This is not meant to be quaint. Rather, it fosters a sense of community — you are more likely to be connected to the folks in your neighborhood when you’re limited by a reasonable radius of travel. While there are a few small groups of Mennonites that do not own automobiles, there are none in the Holmes County community that do not permit car ownership. There are many Mennonites who wear distinctive garb and beards without mustaches as do the Amish, so in this community automobile ownership is one of the ways one can define the two groups. Most Mennonites meet for their church services in meeting houses. The Amish however, retain the practice of meeting in in their homes, shops or barns for their Sunday services. Most Amish still use high German or Pennsylvania Dutch, as the primary language of church services. Most Mennonites use English, and some of their services use modern practices such as worship teams and audiovisual tools in their services. Each family in an Amish Church is expected to take a turn in hosting the service at their home. With this arrangement and their non-use of automobiles this limits the church size to about 30 households in each district who live close to each other. When a district becomes too large, they often will choose a geographical dividing line, such as a creek or road, to divide the district, creating two distinct church districts. Most Mennonites do not practice this form of replication and instead will focus on missions or outreach.
