ow is the winter of our discontent” is how Gloucester begins Shakespeare’s King Richard III, and it seems a rather appropriate time of year to quote one of the most famous opening lines in literature given our interview with Andrew Jarvis. One of the most experienced Shakespearean actors of his generation, he’s got an exciting plan to bring the Bard back to King’s Lynn by organising a festival to be held at St. George’s Guildhall. Why? Because inside the iconic building is the last stage in the world on which Shakespeare himself probably performed. You can read more about his plans on page 28. Not that discontentment is a recurring theme in this month’s magazine. In fact, true to Edward Pola and George Wyle’s famous 1963 song, it really is the most wonderful time of the year. This month sees the first performance of the annual Thursford Christmas Spectacular, which has grown from a humble carol concert into one of the most popular Christmas shows in the country, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors from all around the country to a quiet little corner of Norfolk. The show’s inspirational creator talks about its 42-year success story and this year’s event on page 68. In fact, everyone’s now getting into the spirit. We’ve got a round-up of local festitivies on page 6, all the details of how King’s Lynn will be celebrating on page 22, a look at how the choristers at Ely Cathedral spend Christmas on page 16, and Wendy Warner talks about choosing the Christmas tree that’s right for you and your home on page 44. But before all the festivities begin, there’s one very special event that we should all take note of this month. It is, of course, the centenary of the First World War – and you can read how the conflict affected local people at the front and at home on page 10. The 100th anniversary of the war to end all wars... With a total death toll of over 20 million, the First World War ranks as one of the deadliest conﬂicts in human history, and it aﬀected every aspect of local life in King’s Lynn, as KL magazine discovers

n the shadow of Greyfriars Tower in King’s Lynn you’ll find the town’s war memorial. Unveiled by Princess Mary at the end of January 1921, it listed the local men who had fallen in the conflict that had recently engulfed the world for four years; a global catastrophe that caused the deaths of some 10 million soldiers and 10 million civilians. As we prepare to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One this month, it's worth reflecting on HG Wells’ view that is was the ‘war to end all wars’ – as we know, it didn’t, although it did change virtually everything else, including the status of women. On the war memorial in King’s Lynn

(which now includes the names of local soldiers who fell in subsequent wars and conﬂicts), no less than 569 names are listed for WWI. They died at the start of the war, Arthur Coates of Windsor Road being killed in Belgium in January 1915 – and they died at the end of the war, with Frederick West of Queen Street dying exactly eight weeks before the Armistice was ﬁnally signed. One thing that immediately strikes you about the memorial is that these local men died all over the world – and very few of them had reached the age of 30. Harry Aldren was only 18 when he died in Belgium in July 1917, Gabriel Brock was only 24 when he died in

Palestine, and the 19-year-old William Cannell (who’d worked as an engineer at Cooper Roller Bearings in King's Lynn) died at sea in October 1918. And every single name has a heartbreaking story behind it. John Finney, for example, had worked at Dodman's Foundry in King's Lynn. Married with one child, he enlisted in Dereham just a few weeks after the war started in 1914 and was severely wounded by a bayonet thrust to his thigh a few weeks later. Returning to battle at the start of 1916, he was then gassed and buried by a shell explosion. On August 4th, 1918 he played a part in a ﬁlm marking the fourth (ultimately ﬁnal) year of the war – and was killed

four days later. Or take Reginald Bassham, whose father was an accountant on the Sandringham estate. He’d won scholarships to study at University College, London and went to Australia in 1912. Unable to join the Australian army because of defective eyesight, he patriotically returned to England, successfully enlisted, and was eventually posted to France – where he received a severe shell wound. After recovering in London, Reginald returned to France and was killed a few weeks after his marriage to Dorothy Smithard in May 1917. Sent back to King’s Lynn were his tobacco pouch, his broken pipe and his marriage certificate. He was only 24. Stories like these were repeated in virtually every village in Norfolk. Locally, at least one in three men joined the forces during WWI, serving in many different regiments and units from around the country – and over 12,000 of them died. This was the war that changed everything, the first in which casualties caused by the enemy were greater than those caused by disease. But it wasn’t just soliders who felt the effects of the conflict. The war had hardly started when it introduced the world to the practice of aerial bombardment, and towards the end of January 1915 King’s Lynn became the first town in the UK to experience it at first hand when two German Zeppelins heading for Humberside were diverted off course by strong winds. The airships found

themselves over Norfolk and dropped their bombs regardless. Alice Gazeley (26) and Percy Goate (14) were both killed, 13 people were injured, the pump house at the docks was destroyed, and the total damage in King’s Lynn was over £500,000. By the time the airships reached Norwich they’d run out of bombs. Nearly 60 years later, Alice’s sister Olive recorded her memories of the night for the BBC. “It was about 11am, and when the Zeppelin came over it made a sort of a ‘zoom-zoom’ noise and the next thing we heard was this bang and all the lights went oﬀ,” she said. “My father didn’t know where my sister was, and hunted all around, but it was pitch dark and you couldn't see a thing.”

Her father had to wait until the morning before he could pull his daughter’s body from the rubble of the house. The First World War also made an indelible mark (literally) at the town library in King’s Lynn, where soldiers posted as look-outs for further Zeppelin attacks took the time to engrave their names and service numbers on the sides of the bricks and stones at the top of the crenellated tower of the recentlybuilt building. Thanks to the research of local librarian Kevin Hitchcock, we know that most of the men were from the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars (QOOH) and the Royal Bucks Hussars (RBH). The story of the First World War is often told through the stories of young

men, but there were plenty of local women who played their part, proving they were every bit as brave, courageous and skilled as men. Women such as Win Elwes from Congham, for example, who won a military medal for collecting wounded men from a burning ammunition dump in northern France. Their efforts were a major contribution to women being given the vote through the Qualification of Women Act, which became law a mere 10 days after the signing of the Armistice. The centenary of the end of World War One is a truly momentous occasion, and in addition to the traditional Remembrance Day event in the Tower Gardens, the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk (in association with the Rotary Club of King’s Lynn) have placed two six-foot aluminium statues in the gardens to commemorate the event. Known as Tommies, the statues have been purchased from the charitable organisation There But Not There, and are a poignant reminder of the generation of young men who were lost to their homes, families and communities, but live on in the nation’s memory. On a slightly smaller scale, 600 local schoolchildren have spent months decorating a collection of wooden figures (pictured right) to represent every single soldier on the town’s war

memorial as part of an educational project called WWI Soldiers Remembered. A joint project between the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Stories of Lynn and the Royal British Legion, it’s part of the larger Return to the Battlefield project led by Gerry Tann of the King’s Lynn branch of the Royal British Legion. “My idea for the project arose from my visit to Cambrai in France in 2017 where I made contact with French and Belgian veterans,” he says. “Returning home I was determined to arrange something that would mark this important anniversary suitably, and was supported by my colleagues in the Legion.” Each figure combines the name of someone engraved on the memorial with the name of the pupil who decorated it; an inspired way to connect the past with the present. “It’s an effective way of uniting different personalities and different generations in common remembrance,” says Gerry. “The joint engagement of everyone involved in the project transforms this land-art installation into a symbol of peace that transcends both time and geographical borders.” At the King’s Lynn Minster, a special area has been set aside where personal poppy crosses can be laid by members of the public, and on the evening of November 11th the borough council

and Royal British Legion are joining the national act of remembrance by lighting a beacon at 7pm at Kings’ Staithe Square. The event will be followed by the ringing of all church bells across the borough to signify 100 years since the end of the First World War – and the Town Crier will recite a poem to the fallen. Perhaps it’s ﬁtting to end with the voice of the next generation, with Gayton Primary School Year Six pupil Cameron George, who took part in the WWI Soldiers Remembered project. “Our soldier was called Chamberlin and he died trying to help an injured person to safety,” Cameron said. “I felt sad because so many people were dying when they didn’t deserve to.”

How Duff Morgan played a part in World War One... From the first armoured cars to the very latest Citroën and Seat oday Duff Morgan is one of the largest dealer groups in the UK, retailing well over 2,000 new, used and commercial vehicles a year – but its tradition of motoring excellence and reliable service stretches all the way to the early days of the First World War. It was founded in March 1909 as Duff Morgan & Vermont by local politician Granville Duff, visionary engineer John Morgan, and the well-connected Oliver Locker-Lampson – who preferred to use his mother’s birthplace for the new company’s name as any connection with ‘trade’ or such a new-fangled invention as the car was considered unfitting of a gentleman at the time. He was also a great friend of Winston

Churchill, who was the driving force behind the original construction of armoured cars at the start of World War One. A previously classified document revealed that the Admiralty’s armoured cars (the Army chose to prefer horses at the time) “were entirely designed by, and the manufacture arranged through, the firm Duff Morgan & Vermont.” Locker-Lampson actually commanded a unit of the new vehicles, fighting alongside the armies of the Russian Czar in 1915. At the same time, the company was building cars for the people of Norfolk, often customising them with bespoke coachwork – a dedication to customer service that’s remained at the

heart of the business for over 100 years. How choristers celebrate Christmas at Ely Cathedral Most young boys will wake up at home with their families on Christmas Day, but the choristers of Ely Cathedral find themselves at school – ready for one of the busiest days in their calendar

hristmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without music, and that’s never more relevant at Ely, where music has been a significant part of daily Cathedral life since the days of King Canute (c.1000) – and Christmas is no exception. For a young boy to wake up on Christmas morning at school rather than at home with family may seem bizarre to many, but for the 22 choristers at Ely Cathedral, it’s a normal annual occurrence and something to get very excited about. Every year, a few days before Christmas, the choristers pack their suitcase to return to school, ready to perform for the 16

largest audiences and congregations of the year. It may sound tough to some, but for these boys (aged between 7-13) being a chorister at Ely Cathedral is an experience which sets them up for life. In addition to receiving an unrivalled musical education, performing daily as professionals in the Cathedral as well as in venues all over the world, these choristers acquire a self-discipline and confidence to guide them towards successful careers in all fields of work – as well as provide them with a lifelong, deep-rooted passion for music of all genres. For the choristers and the Music Department, Christmas preparations

start very early. A busy and rigorous schedule is planned to ensure the boys are well-rehearsed and physically fit so they can be at the top of their game during the lead-up to Christmas Day. The chorister’s first major performance of the season will be the Advent Procession on December 2nd. Regarded as one of the most beautiful and moving events in the Cathedral’s entire calendar, this service commemorates the beginning of Advent. As the building is transformed from darkness into light, the mesmerising voices of the choir will be heard throughout the building - from the clock tower above the great west door to the angel windows in Ely’s KLmagazine November 2018

famous Octagon Tower. The boys would usually arrive back at their boarding houses around 21st December for what is known as the ‘Christmas stayover.’ Staff including the Choir House mistress Rebecca and Choir Matron Lucy are on hand to make sure there is as much fun as work scheduled into their very busy festive agenda, with special outings such as go-karting or paintballing, and plenty of other treats – including an annual Christmas party hosted by Director of Music, Paul Trepte. Although Christmas Eve typically involves a day of rehearsals and services, one of the highlights has to be a visit by Father Christmas delivering a huge sack of presents to Choir House, where the boys live while they are at school. As Christmas Day arrives, the choristers wake up in their dormitories to a bulging Christmas stocking and a festive breakfast with Matron and the boarding house staff, before heading off for the traditional Christmas morning carol singing outside the houses of the Director of Music, Head of School and Canon Precentor. There is, however, little time for games and frivolity. As the Cathedral KLmagazine November 2018

there are several other opportunities to hear the choir over the festive season. The ever popular afternoon crib service on Christmas Eve is the perfect way to fully immerse yourself in the Christmas spirit. Hundreds pf people attend this short family service complete with a ‘living’ nativity and special guest Midnight the Donkey. The Choir will perform well-known carols and you won’t have to look far to spot a plethora of Disney characters amongst the many angels and fairies in the congregation! If you’ve never attended a Crib Service at Ely Cathedral on Christmas Eve, it is well worth adding to your festive ‘must do’ list. However Christmas for the choristers isn’t just about performing at concerts and services in the Cathedral. They are often in demand for photographs in front of Ely’s magnificent Christmas tree, or filming and recording for television and radio. Over the years, Ely’s choristers have earned a welldeserved profile having worked alongside artists and orchestras of national repute. They have performed for the Pope and the Her Majesty, The Queen, shared a stage with José Carreras, Aled Jones, Hayley Westenra and Laura Wight, and have been under the musical direction of the likes of John Rutter and Gareth Malone. However, being a chorister is not all music and glamour! This year you will find them at the Cathedral’s traditional Christmas Gift and Food Fair (November 15th-17th) where they give up their free time to sell Christmas puddings and cards to raise funds for their next choir tour. They also manage to find the time to visit care homes and schools and are encouraged to participate in numerous

other outreach projects. As pupils of King’s School, Ely, the boys also have to work exceptionally hard to fulfil a demanding school curriculum. Many of them play at least one musical instrument and are equally enthusiastic about playing sports for their school teams. For over 1,000 years people have been flocking to Ely Cathedral at this special time of year to worship, rejoice and celebrate with friends and families. Acknowledged as one of the finest medieval Cathedrals in Europe, there are few better ways of getting into the Christmas spirit than visiting this glorious building, gaze at the magnificent tree or attend one of its many festive events, concerts and services. If you’re lucky, you will also get to experience the heavenly voices of this outstanding choir. fills with worshippers for the 10.30am service, the boys are kept fully occupied with rehearsals, final preparations and warm-ups. Only when the service is finished are the boys and their families reunited and (together with the lay clerks, staff and Cathedral musicians) get together for a celebratory ‘bring-and-share’ lunch before the start of Choral Evensong. Helen Allen is mother to three Cathedral choristers; her eldest son left last summer and her twins are now embarking on their second year. “The twins were only three years old when Thomas joined the choir, so they don't really remember any other kind of Christmas,” she says. “Now that Thomas has left the choir, it’s his turn to wait to open his presents!” For Helen, this rather different approach to the festivities has become something of a tradition. “Our family Christmas really begins after Evensong when the boys are allowed home, and we’ll open our presents accompanied by pizza!” she says. “Boxing Day is about lunch with the grandparents. It is rather strange not having the boys home in the days leading up to Christmas, but we always fit in as many family celebrations as possible. On the bright side, it does mean that last-minute shopping and present wrapping can happen pretty much child-free!“ This December, the boys will sing at around 20 services and three major concerts, notwithstanding morning and afternoon rehearsals. A highlight for 2018 is the choir performing alongside award-winning west end actress, Ruthie Henshall, who is the celebrity guest at A Festival of Carols on December 7th. great Christmas classics to get you in the spirit ahead of the Switch-On countdown shortly after 4.30pm. Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a pantomime, and this year the Corn Exchange will be presenting a spectacular production of Sleeping Beauty. Tickets are still available for the show, which stars King’s Lynn’s Victoria Bush – who’s starred in the television shows Bad Girls and Waterloo Road. Local radio presenter ‘Posh Charles’ will also be taking to the boards once again alongside everyone’s favourite pantomime dame Ian Marr – who’s appearing in his 17th pantomime. Sleeping Beauty runs from Friday December 7th until Monday 31st December, and the programme includes both a relaxed autism-friendly performance on Thursday 20th December and a signed performance for the hard of hearing on Thursday 27th December. Late Night Shopping returns to the centre of King’s Lynn on Thursday 29th November. Stores around the town will remain open until 8pm and will be accompanied by festive street entertainers, music and plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy on all the remaining Thursdays leading up to Christmas. Meanwhile, the town’s beautiful Minster on the Saturday Market Place will be hosting a very special Carol Service on Thursday 6th December in aid of the charity EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices) and the evening begins at 6.30pm. The Norfolk-based

organisation works tirelessly to look after children with life-limiting conditions and their families – and was chosen by the Vancouver Quarter as its Charity of the Year for 2018. You can read more about the amazing work of this local charity and discover why it’s so important to support them on page 110 of this issue of KL magazine. People who enjoyed the town’s first Christmas market last year will be pleased to learn that the event was so popular it’s returning to King’s Lynn on Thursday November 29th. Around 60 different traders will be setting up around the town centre selling a huge variety of handmade wares – the perfect opportunity to find a unique present for every member of the family. This market will also be sited on both the town’s market places, complementing all the retailers in King's Lynn who’ll be gearing up for the festivities and helping bring the town to life this Christmas. The man who’s bringing Shakespeare home... Andrew Jarvis is one of the most respected Shakespearean actors of his generation, and is now planning a special festival in King’s Lynn to celebrate the work of the world’s most famous dramatist

he idea that you could stand in the middle of King’s Lynn and legitimately claim to be bringing Shakespeare home seems somewhat outlandish, especially considering the world’s pre-eminent dramatist was born (and died) in a town over 120 miles away. But if anyone can make the claim with confidence and a degree of veracity it’s veteran Shakespearean actor Andrew Jarvis, who’s spent his life with the Bard and is now organising a unique festival to celebrate his work. For the theatre in the Guildhall of St George in King’s Lynn 28

may well be the last remaining space in the world where William Shakespeare actually performed. “As a board member of the British Shakespeare Association I’ve spent a lot of time talking with academics and scholars about this. Doctor Matthew Woodcock at the UEA has been researching this for years, and there’s a very real possibility that Shakespeare himself performed in this space in 1592,” says Andrew, sitting in the front row of the theatre in question. “That’s such an extraordinary fact that it deserves to be celebrated.” And if anyone knows how to

celebrate Shakespeare, it’s Andrew Jarvis. He happily admits the only thing he ever wanted to be was an actor, and although his parents (who were both teachers) resisted any idea of him following a theatrical career, they didn’t exactly discourage him. “Every year they’d take me and my brother to Stratford, and every time it was the most stunning and magical experience,” he says. “I saw Laurence Olivier as Coriolanus in 1959, and was utterly transported. I knew immediately that was the world I wanted to live in.” Andrew dutifully trained as a teacher, KLmagazine November 2018

but couldn’t leave Stratford alone, taking a sleeping bag to Shakespeare’s home to see everything he could – including Peter Hall’s seminal production of Hamlet with David Warner in 1965. Resisting the path his parents wanted, Andrew never strayed far from the stage, working as an unpaid assistant stage manager for pantomime and summer seasons at his local theatre before finding a job as a Technical Assistant Stage Manager at the Phoenix Theatre in Leicester – which meant sweeping the stage, making the coffee, and making sure the actors were okay. “Although it was made clear that I wasn’t hired as an actor, I was thrilled to simply be in the theatre,” he says. “One day, the theatre’s wonderful director, the late Robin Midgley, stopped me in the corridor and asked if I really wanted to be a stage manager or whether I wanted to be an actor. And that was it.” Andrew started off with relatively undemanding walk-on parts, standing at the back of scenes and marvelling at the talent around him. “One of the first things I did was Son of Man by Dennis Potter in 1969 with Frank Finlay playing Jesus,” he says. “Frank had just left the National Theatre where he’d been in Othello with Laurence Olivier, and I was standing next to him wondering how on earth I’d ever be able to do anything like it.” Luckily for Andrew, he had a natural

born talent, and combined a relentless decade-long programme of repertory work with a determined campaign to garner the interest of the Royal Shakepseare Company. “The RSC’s Casting Director at the time was the lovely Joyce Nettles,” says Andrew, “but since she’d seen me three or four times already I ﬁgured that I simply wasn’t good enough. They obviously didn’t want to know.” But almost inevitably, fate intervened. “I’d pretty much given up on any hope of joining the RSC when Joyce called me out of the blue and asked me to audition for the two parts of Henry IV,” says Andrew. “I jumped at the chance, I got the parts, and I stayed at the RSC for almost 10 years.” By now Shakespeare was well and truly in Andrew’s blood, and he couldn’t escape the Bard even when he left the RSC in 1986 – his ﬁrst job was working with Kenneth Branagh’s new theatrical company, playing Capulet in Romeo and Juliet. And just when he thought that was enough Shakespeare for one lifetime, Andrew was invited to join the English Shakespeare Company (then being formed by the late Michael Bogdanov and Michael Pennington) to appear in the two parts of Henry IV and Henry V. “We toured around the world for 18 months and then added Richard II, Henry VI and Richard III to present the 30

complete sevenplay history cycle,” says Andrew – who won Best Actor at the Manchester Theatre Awards for his performance as Richard III. “Once that finished I was offered the role of Don John in Much Ado About Nothing at Bristol Old Vic, then Coriolanus and then The Winter’s Tale back at the ESC – so I had to finally admit that Shakespeare had become my life.” Which makes it all the more remarkable that when Andrew and his wife decided to move out of London they chose King’s Lynn – which unbeknownst to Andrew at the time) features the last remaining space in which Shakepeare probably performed. For someone so well versed in the Bard’s life and work, the idea of a special festival to celebrate the playwright and his connections to the town was a natural one. “Since I first broached the idea I’ve received a huge amount of support from local people and groups such as the borough council and the King’s Lynn Festival,” says Andrew. “I also contacted some of the great Shakespearean actors I’ve worked with over the years such as Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Janet Suzman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi – and they’ve all been really encouraging.” So encouraging, in fact, that Andrew’s King’s Lynn Shakespeare Festival will feature one of the most famous stage and screen actors in the world – although you’ll have to wait a couple of more weeks to discover their identity. “Over three days in April we’ll be having very special performances, professional workshops on acting, and

seminars with scholars and academics exploring Shakespeare and his connection to King’s Lynn,” says Andrew. “In addition to becoming an annual event, I’m hoping to build a continuous ﬂow of Shakespearean productions throughout the year. We’ll also be introducing things such as the ‘mystery plays’ that were written for King’s Lynn merchants in the 15th century. It’s a very, very exciting prospect.” 400 years after his death, there’s a temptation to modernise Shakespeare, a desire to make his work more accessible and more relevant – which is anathema and somewhat pointless to Andrew. “It annoys me when people try to modernise and ‘re-imagine’ Shakespeare (whatever that means) because it’s totally unnecessary,” he says. “The plays are already relevant and they’re already accessible – you don’t have to ‘do’ anything.” He cites Love’s Labours Lost as an example, which despite being relatively unpopular and one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays is a penetrating feminist insight into the role of women in society. “Nobody ever considers modernising Beethoven or Mozart,” says Andrew. “The notes are there and all you have to do is play them. It’s the same with Shakespeare – the words are on the page, and if you’re courageous by remaining true to the text it works supremely well without any ‘help.’ That’s what we’re planning to do in King’s Lynn. Often considered an n unnecessary expense by landlords particularly when letting unfurnished properties, pro operties we are going to use this month’s article to explain the benefits of property inventories and also how to ensure that you are getting one that will fully support your needs. As I have highlighted already in several of my previous KL Magazine articles so far this year the private rented sector in England and Wales is more than midway through some very significant changes. One of the effects of this is that the number of letting agencies in the country are reducing. Most due to selling out to larger companies but a notable proportion are simply imploding due to mismanagement or penalties endured following non-compliance with new legislation. The latter has resulted in our firm taking over a lot of existing tenancies and as a consequence of this inheriting the h paperwork k that h goes with i h them. h The insight that this has given us is

most sho ocking when considering the quality of so-called “professional inventories” in comparison to our own. Considerring that some of our new landlordss have paid up to a half share of o £240 for a document which proposes to surmisse the condition of a kitchen within ha alf a page of text in a grid and 6 photogra aphs is quite concerning. To To give som me perspective we produce more tha an this to accurately describe a hallway, with w kitchens usually accounting for an average of 5 pages dependin ng on the size and whether appliance es are included. What should s be included? In a word; everythin ng! The perfect inventory will detail the e colour, style and condition of everythin ng in the room including skirting boards, b light switches, curtain poles, he eating controls, etc. One example that we often see is with radiators that have thermostatic valves, at the sta art of the tenancy that are complete e but at the end the control tops are missing. That’s between £12 and £20 each plus fitting that you can’t reclaim from the tenant if they are not li d on the listed h inventory! i ! Clear photographs are also vital.

Going back in time and going back to school... Former headmaster of King Edward VII School in King’s Lynn Michael Walker talks about his fifth book looking at the history of secondary education in the area and the students who passed through it

he brand new Gaywood Park Boys’ and Girls’ Schools were opened in King’s Lynn just as the Second World War broke out, which meant that for several years the new schools had to cope with air-raid warnings (and actual raids) and shortages of all kinds – in addition to all the normal aspects of school life. Many of the children’s fathers were away at war, and this was also true of several of the teachers in the Boys’ School – and the husband of at least one of the staﬀ in the Girls’ School.

Both headteachers kept a daily log of events, and their entries regularly refer to air-raid precaution drills, the testing of stirrup pumps for use in case of ﬁre, the checking of pupils’ respirators and air-raid alerts. In fact the latter often had an eﬀect on attendance as children were kept at home “to make up for lost rest.” Another wartime necessity was to provide home-grown produce. On June 26th, 1940 the Headmistress, Miss Sherman, recorded in her log that “garden peas from the school garden were enjoyed at dinner today” and that

“radishes and onions are being used for salad in the canteen.” In the holidays great quantities of plums were made into jam or bottled fruit by the domestic science teachers and at the beginning of the autumn term the big push concentrated on the collection of blackberries. On September 15th 1941, for example, 30 girls and two staﬀ returned to school with 74lbs of fruit which (together with donated apples) was made into 91lbs of blackberry and apple jam and 26lbs of bottled blackberries. When the schools opened on KLmagazine November 2018

Monday 11th September 1939 (a week after the outbreak of war) they provided a standard of facilities that had been unavailable in the various local elementary schools which provided education for those children under 14 who hadn’t gained places at one of the selective schools in the town. Examples were the specialist rooms for cookery, needlework, woodwork and physical education. There was also a shared kitchen and dining room, and meals were provided at a cost of 3p a day. The information above is typical of the factual content contained in the ﬁve books I’ve published about the history of the secondary schools in King’s Lynn. In each book I have written a detailed account gleaned from a wide range of sources such as the log books mentioned above, headteachers’ reports to governors, scrapbooks, newspaper articles, inspection reports, school magazines and reminiscences of former pupils and staﬀ. The latter are especially important as

degree in physics at Queen Mary College, London,” he wrote. “In October I’ll be going to Imperial College, London to do research for my Ph.D but at the moment I am having a good time at CERN in Switzerland, helping with data analysis in the largest particle physics laboratory in the world.” Mr Towler was by no means the only person who had failed his 11-plus examination but was later to be successful in gaining a university degree or equivalent professional qualiﬁcation. It was an invidious system in which 25% of pupils were misplaced in grammar or secondary modern schools

they bring the books alive, and these precious memories usually concern particular teachers or amusing incidents. For example, John Bocking (1941-44) has written about many of the teachers who were on the staff when the Boys’ School first opened. “Nearly all the teachers had nicknames, but we were careful to call them ‘Sir’ to their faces for fear of chastisement,” he remembers. “The cane was the main form of punishment then, and one didn’t have to get far out of line to get a taste of it.” Despite this, most former pupils who have contacted me say their time at Gaywood Park was both happy and profitable. Steve Valentine (1962-66) stressed the importance of sport in school life and said that “being good at it gave one kudos among one’s peers.” Nick Fisher (1963-67) admits that he was no sportsman, but has very happy memories of his time there and his account concludes by saying that it was “a very good school indeed.” Of particular interest is a letter reproduced in the 1965 Boys’ School Magazine from G.O. Towler, who was a student from 1954 to 1958: “I thought that you and some of the staff would like to know that I have just obtained a 1st Class Special Honours

at age 11. I mention several other examples in my book of people who were failed by the system, and it is a matter of great regret to me that the present government is encouraging the expansion of grammar schools. One purpose of all my books is to celebrate the success of individuals and groups. As well as academic success, pupils who attended the Gaywood Park schools went on to make very positive contributions to the life of the town in a wide range of occupations. These were schools that more than lived up to expectations, allowing generations of local children the chance to fulﬁl their potential.

How we’re protecting local people from Christmas scams With more than half of over 65s being targeted by fraudsters, Home Instead Senior Care is actively helping people protect themselves and their money ecent research by Age UK found that more than half the people in the UK aged 65 and over believe they’ve been targeted by fraudsters – and although not all of them responded to the scam, a third lost £1,000 or more, which means that a staggering 500,000 older people in the country have fallen victim to lost savings and pension funds. And it’s estimated that only 1 in 5 cases are actually reported. For the last ten years Home Instead Senior Care (West Norfolk) has specialised in relationship-led care for older people, oﬀering a range of services from convalescence and respite care to support and care for people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Part of that work involves protecting vulnerable people from scams and fraudsters – especially during the approach to Christmas. “Norfolk has an unusually high proportion of older people, and they're particularly vulnerable to scams, and even more so at

Choosing and caring for the perfect Christmas tree Today, Christmas trees come in all shapes, sizes, materials and colours – which makes finding the right one for your home more challenging than ever, as Wendy Warner of Thaxters Garden Centre explains...

efore we know it, it will be time to start thinking about your Christmas tree, but it’s not quite as simple as that. Will it be real or artificial? If it’s real, will it be cut or in a pot? If it’s in a pot, will it be pot-grown or containerised? And if it’s artificial, is it plain, coloured or bedecked with fibre optic lights? With so many questions that need answering, I thought it would be a good idea to try and simplify it... Before you even set out to buy your tree, measure the space in the room where it’s going to sit. Allow for the height

of a stand if you’re using one, and when looking at the width, remember that you’ll still need to be able to close the curtains and you’ll still need to be able to watch the television! You don’t want to choose a beautiful tree and then ﬁnd it’s too tall or wide for your room and have to cut it and ruin its proportions. Another thing to consider is the positioning itself – try to keep your tree away from heat sources such as radiators and ﬁres and out of direct sunlight, although it will need to be in a well-lit spot where it will be noticed. If you’re choosing a real cut tree, one

that’s been growing in the ground in a field or forest and has been cut down by the grower and has no roots, freshness is the key. Bright, shiny needles that feel waxy rather than dry are a sure sign of freshness. Avoid any trees with browning or withered needles – give the tree a gentle shake and if lots of needles drop off, it’s definitely past its best. Even if you’re not looking for a huge tree, compare the size of the trunk to the height you want, because a wider trunk is likely to hold more moisture than a thin one. Always buy your tree from somewhere

where they’re stored outside, as this means they’ve been kept cooler than if they’d been in a shop or warehouse. Try to avoid trees that are pre-wrapped or netted as this can cause the tree to sweat and cause inner needles to turn yellow or mouldy. You’ll also get a much better idea of the shape of the tree if it’s unwrapped. You’ll often find that even the best retailers will offer a choice of grades of Christmas tree. The most common reason for a tree to be a lower grade (and usually cheaper) is that the tree is slightly misshapen or a paler green in colour. This may suit you if you want an additional tree for outside or are looking for a short, squat tree for some reason! There are many different types of ‘Christmas’ tree, including firs, spruce and pines. The most popular in recent years has been the Nordmann Fir, which has soft, dark green needles which are the least likely to drop. The branches tend to grow in layers and they’re considerably wider at the bottom than most other varieties. The Fraser Fir has a sweet scent with needles which are deep green on the top and silvery underneath, and the tree forms a slender cone with the branches being more upright and structured than the Nordmann. Due to the fact they’re both slower growing and longer lasting, these varieties are generally more expensive. The Norway Spruce is the more traditional Christmas tree, with spiky needles (which can be prone to dropping if not treated correctly) and a strong pine scent – they’re denser in habit and have a distinctive pyramid shape. To ensure you get your tree home safely, ask for it to be re-netted before it goes into the car or onto the roof rack, which will protect the tree from any branches getting broken in transit. It’s also a good idea to leave it in the net if it’s going straight into the house, leaving it much easier to manage when going through narrow doors or hallways. Once in its correct position and placed in a stand or bucket, you can cut the netting – but leave it for 24 hours before decorating to allow the branches to settle. If you’re not taking your tree indoors immediately, remove the net, store it in a shady position outside, and make sure you place it in a bucket of water. To help your cut tree last longer, use a stand with a water reservoir. If possible, make a fresh cut at the bottom of the trunk to enhance water uptake before placing it in the stand and securing it with the adjustable screws. If you have a blocked tree, this can be placed in a large bucket or tub of water as it will still take up water through the block. Remember

that a fresh cut tree can drink up to four litres of water a day, so keep it topped up! Pot-grown or containerised trees are an alternative if you want a smaller tree, with the possibility of putting it in the garden for future use, but again the tips above for caring for cut trees should be followed – keep it well watered, avoid heat, and keep it inside for as short a time as possible. By their very nature, pot-grown trees will have their roots intact and will be more likely to survive planting out after Christmas. Containerised (or potted) trees will have been ﬁeld-grown but then lifted and put into pots, which raises the risk that main roots may have been severed in lifting – which can reduce the success of replanting. Of course, you mustn’t forget ‘Elf and Safety’ (sorry!) when it comes to Christmas trees. Pine needles can be sharp, so wear gloves when handling your tree and vacuum regularly to prevent needles getting into feet or paws. Stabilise your tree by using a stand, but also think about using string or wire to

secure your tree via a hook in the nearest wall – especially if you have boisterous dogs, young kittens or inquisitive toddlers. Ensure lights are in a good state of repair with no fraying cables or cracked

plugs, don’t let any water get into the electrics when topping up, and make sure no one is going to trip over cables between the tree and the electricity socket. If the idea of a real tree seems too much like hard work, you may be better suited to an artificial tree. The choice is virtually endless today, with numerous sizes, shapes and even colours. You can get ‘pencil’ trees which can reach 8’ tall but remain only 2’ at the widest part at the bottom (they’re ideal where space is limited)’; ‘half’ trees if you need to put your tree against a wall; table-top trees; snow-flocked trees which look as if they’ve just had a dusting of snow; trees with berries and cones; and even silver, black or white trees. Large artificial trees usually come in two or three sections with an integral stand, and the branches either clip in or fold down. Once assembled, the tree just needs ‘fluffing’ and it’s ready to decorate – and after Christmas it can be reboxed and stored in the loft. Decorating the tree is very much to individual taste, but whether you go for a minimalist look, a subtle colour scheme, or a completely over-the-top look, the one thing that will always improve the look is using light to highlight the outside of the tree in addition to the fairy lights in the branches.

This can be created by utilising a spotlight or by the new trend of making spirals of pinwire lights cascading down the outside of the tree – this additional lighting will really highlight your tree. If you’re struggling for inspiration, you can get some great ideas for decorating your tree from visiting garden centres where you’ll also ﬁnd an excellent choice of decorations and helpful staﬀ. Christmas Tree Festivals are another great source of inspiration (you can also help raise money for charity) and online apps such as Pinterest are always full of

interesting ideas. After Christmas, when it’s time to dispose of your real tree (unless you’re thinking of planting it) your local council will usually have special recycling days for Christmas trees – or you can take it to the household recycling centre for composting. If possible, you can even cut it up and put in your brown garden waste bin for collection. Since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert brought the idea of Christmas trees to England in the middle of the 19th century, they’ve become an integral – arguably central – part of our festive celebrations. Whatever type of tree you choose, whatever colour it is, whether it’s real or artiﬁcal – the most important thing is that you enjoy it, and if you do decide on a real tree I can recommend a very good local garden centre that oﬀers a delivery service! How to protect the fastest bird in the world Able to exceed 200mph while hunting, the Peregrine Falcon is one of the country’s most iconic birds, and the Fakenham-based Hawk and Owl Trust is helping secure a future for them...

ajestic Peregrine Falcons are birds of wild places, mountains and windswept coasts, right? Well, yes they are, but they’re also birds of our towns, cities and even industrial sites. Britain’s largest and most iconic falcon has seen a resurgence in recent years, and numbers have been recovering from an all-time low in the 1970s and 80s which was caused by inadvertent poisoning from pesticides. As populations increase the birds are ﬁnding novel places to build their nests,

and as far away from cliffs and mountains as Norfolk is, they’ve returned to the county, finding our buildings and city streets very much to their liking. Peregrines are large (about the same size as the more familiar crow) and the speed for which they’re famous comes from their power; these are big and muscular birds. They hunt birds in flight, catching them in their infamous highspeed stoop. The narrow streets and high walls of our cities provide Peregrines with a man-made ‘cliff and canyon’ landscape, and with a ready

supply of food such as town pigeons and lights to enable them to hunt at night as well as during the day, our cities might not be such an odd habitat for them as you may think. After an absence of 150 years, a Peregrine returned to take up residence on Norwich cathedral in 2008 – but it took three years for him to be joined by a female. The pair bred, and nesting has occurred every year since. Part of this success is due to the provision by the Hawk and Owl Trust of a nesting platform on the cathedral’s spire, making the eggs and chicks more

secure and less likely to fall from a precipitous nest site. Each year, during the breeding season (March to June), the Hawk and Owl Trust has a free Watchpoint in the cathedral enclosure from where you can watch the birds on the nest through telescopes and binoculars. The team at the Watchpoint can help you spot the birds, as well as tell you more about the life of a city-based Peregrine and the history of the Norwich birds, answering any questions you might have. Even when the Watchpoint isn’t active, you can still see the Peregrines as the adults remain around the cathedral all year round – at certain times the young are present as well as they get to know the area and learn to hunt eﬃciently. Excitingly, you can also follow both the Norwich birds (and those in Bath) on a year-round web camera accessible through the Trust’s website. Over the time the Hawk and Owl Trust have been watching the Norwich birds, other Peregrines have made their homes in Norfolk, with birds now breeding on the sugar factories in Wissington and Cantley, and on a silo in the docks at King’s Lynn – so it’s deﬁnitely worth keeping your eyes open for this spectacular bird around town.

Birds often winter on future nesting sites for several years before settling, and the Trust knows of other single birds using Great Yarmouth power station, Wymondham Abbey, and the churches at Reedham and Wells-nextthe-Sea. This winter, the Trust is asking people to look out for Peregrines on other sites, and if you’d like to assist them in their research, they’ll give you all the help and advice you need. Through Heritage Lottery Funding, the Hawk and Owl Trust has been able to expand the Norfolk Peregrine Project and now has a dedicated Peregrine Project Oﬃcer, who concentrates on education as well as the vital research and conservation. She is able to oﬀer Peregrine outreach lessons to schools, colleges and universities across Norfolk – and regularly presents talks about Peregrines for adult groups. n 2016, the resident female Peregrine at Norwich cathedral was displaced by a new, very large, female falcon which was originally hatched several years earlier at the Hawk and Owl Trust’s other monitored Peregrine nest box in Bath. As a chick she’d been ringed there and a blue plastic ring with the letters ‘GA’ placed on her leg to enable individual identiﬁcation if she should ever be re-spotted. After leaving the nest, she wasn’t seen again until appearing in Norwich in 2015. ‘GA’ paired with the resident male in 2016, and nested for the ﬁrst time the following year. This year she has raised three healthy chicks. Ringing has also revealed that an adult Finnish Peregrine is currently using the church at Aylsham to roost during the winter months – and returning to Finland to breed during the spring and summer months.

Illegall puppy breeding b g B ack in 2015 we highlighted the worrying y g trend of p puppies pp being g bred and sold on a commercial scale. We were concerned that puppies were being brought up in less than ideal surroundings, often with limited human contact, poor diets and often no worming or flea treatment. We have seen and treated several of these unfortunate cases, including one little pup, who was near death and only saved by intravenous fluids, antibiotics, worming and a lot of nursing care. This is distressing for both the new owner and our team to see. We are pleased to report that since then, new regulations on dog breeding designed to clamp down hard on illegal puppy farming in England came into effect on October 1st. As of that date, any puppy breeder in England must have a license if they intend to make a profit from their pups. This applies to all breeders of three or more litters per year. This is a positive ste step ep in the war against the illegal pup ppy trade. It’s good news for us vets and very v good news

for anyon ne wanting to buy a puppy. You will need d to make sure that the breeder you’re bu uying from is legitimate and licensed. Dog breeders have to adhere to certain n criteria, so you can treat the following g as your licensed-breeder checklistt: • Breed ders must display info on their adverts such s as their license number and the authority a that issued it. • They will have to include the puppy’s age a in their advert, along with a clear pho oto (that is genuine). • It is also the law that the sale of a puppy sh hould take place in the presence e of the buyer. A licensed breeder will w therefore not be prepared to condu uct a sale over the phone or the internet. Anothe er great way to tell a genuine breeder from f an illegal one is to note how help pful and informative they are. They willl be able to provide you with photos, they t will let you visit the puppy, they will let you visit the mother and they will provide you with evidence of all necessary treatments and

vaccinations. ou will probably have seen on the news recently that the Police are performing roadside checks on drivers to ensure they meet the required standard of vision to legally drive. The Police can, and do, require drivers who they have stopped to take an on-the-spot roadside eyesight test to prove that they can read a number plate f from 20 metres t if they th are concerned d about b t their eyesight. Here in the UK we have some of the most lenient laws when it comes to driving compared with the rest of the EU. We rely on our drivers to 'self assess' their vision after passing their driving test at the age of 17 until they reach the age of 70 years old. Even then there is no law demanding an eye examination, only a self declaration that you do not have any eye conditions and whether you require spectacles to meet the driving

standard. Some of the eye conditions that need to be declared, Glaucoma, Cataracts, Diabetic Retinopathy etc, are conditions that without an eye examination may go undetected. If it’s time for Christmas, it’s time for Thursford... As creator John Cushing puts the finishing touches to this year’s Thursford Christmas Spectacular, he talks to KL magazine about the event’s incredible success and enduring popularity

t’s now only a few weeks before we’ll all be planning for Christmas but for John Cushing, the inspirational creator of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular, it’s something he’s been working on since the middle of January. And it’s something he’s worked on with the same remarkable enthusiasm and genuine love of the festive season for the last 42 years. The sheer scale of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular is quite staggering. From its humble beginnings

in 1977 as a small carol concert in an old farm shed in Norfolk featuring singers from King’s College in Cambridge, it’s grown into the biggest Christmas show in the country – and it may well be the biggest in Europe. “It was something of a coup to bring the King’s College singers to this little corner of Norfolk at the time, but I was convinced we could have done better,” says John. “The following year we presented two carol concerts with two schools, and we did six the year after that. One of the secrets of the show is

that from the very beginning we’ve tried to improve on what we’ve done before. After five years, the show had grown so large we were having to produce it on a professional basis!” And this year’s event is a very far cry from that original carol concert. For this year’s show, John and his team have spent £360,000 on costumes, invested £250,000 in sound, made significant upgrades to the lighting system, installed an extra eight rows of seats, and faced an unprecedented demand from talented performers wishing to

take part. Earlier this year, no less than 1,300 singers auditioned for 66 parts and 400 dancers applied for the 23 available places. “Virtually every show in the West End at the moment will feature a few people who’ve appeared at Thursford at some point in the past, and that’s a remarkable thought,” says John. “The singers, dancers and musicians all love the show just as much as the audience, and they really put their hearts into their performances.” They can also remind John just how much of a festive tradition the Thursford Christmas Spectacular has become. During a recent rehearsal session, a singer told him that her father had actually been part of the King’s College choir appearing at that very first carol concert in 1977. An extravaganza of non-stop singing, dancing, music, humour and variety, the Thursford Christmas Spectacular is a fast-moving celebration of the festive season that features an eclectic mix of both seasonal and year-round favourites. This year’s show will have up to 100 people on stage at any one time, and includes 78 pieces of music John has chosen himself – with pieces coming from such diverse sources as The Sound of Music, Scrooge and Irving Berlin, although Christmas music still

little more than an old farm shed. I think that helps gives the show a unique charm, and I’d never want to change that.” So what exactly is the magical secret behind the continued growth and growing popularity of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular? “The fabulous setting has a lot to do with it,” says John. “Our stage is 135ft long, it’s surrounded by beautifullydecorated artefacts, and it’s all live. We have a full 32-piece orchestra instead of musical tracking, which is quite rare these days.” But there’s no doubting the enormous part John Cushing himself has played in the incredible success of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular

over the last four decades – although he’s remarkably modest about it. “I just think that God has given me a gift and it’s a very special one,” he says. “I love musical theatre and if I don’t get emotional about it then it’s not worth doing. You have to have that passion and that enthusiasm – and I’ve never lost that.”

The Thursford Christmas Spectacular 2018 runs from Tuesday 6th November until Sunday 23rd December with performances at 2pm and 7pm. But that’s about all John’s prepared to share about this year’s event. “Part of the magic of Thursford every year is that it’s a surprise, so I never give anything away before the first performance,” he says. “However, I can promise you there’s a huge amount of new things to enjoy – although regular visitors will recognise organist Phil Kelsall MBE, who’s returning for his 39th year here. He’s been a part of the event almost as long as I have!” It’s hard to underestimate the popularity of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. Tickets for this year’s event went on sale in the middle of last December and 24,000 were sold within 24 hours. By New Year’s Eve over 40,000 people already had their tickets for 2018 (it’s hardly surprising John has added three extra shows for this year) and they come from all over the country – from Cornwall to Scotland. Over 10,000 people travel from Yorkshire and over 5,000 will take the long trip from Northumbria, making a huge contribution to the county’s economy, especially for local restaurants and hotels. “When you consider the village of Thursford has a population of around 100 people it’s quite incredible,” says John. “Even though I love Christmas, I don’t think I’d travel to Glasgow just to watch a Christmas show. The most amazing thing is that I still see this as

Shack Salsa Verde 1/2 bunch coriander ½ bunch parsley 1 cloves garlic 4 spring onions 3 sprigs thyme 50ml water 2 limes zest and juice ¼ habanero chilli de seeded Sea salt to taste ½ tbsp fresh grated ginger 100ml olive oil

Mix all ingredientss together.

Place in a food processor and blitz until smooth.

To Finish When everything is ready, turn on the deep fat fryer to 180°c 180 c, when hot enough take pigeon, squeeze off excess marinade, coat in the flour and place in the fryer for 2 minutes, then drain and leave to rest for 2 minutes, then serve altogether.

Thinly slice the re ed onions. Put the rest of the e ingredients into a pan and bring to the boil. When boiling gp pour over the red onions and place in a fridge until cold.

Enjoy Thursford’s other spectacular...

t’s nearing that time of year when thousands of people from all over the country will descend on the small village of Thursford for the famous Christmas Spectacular, but that’s not the only reason why this little corner of Norfolk is proving so popular with people far and wide. The only pub in the village has stood here for 135 years and still welcomes drinkers, but for the last 15 years The Crawﬁsh Inn has been treating diners to an authentic taste of Thai cuisine thanks to the work (and traditional recipes) of owner Siropas Rangphet and his wife. Their commitment to using the freshest ingredients possible and delicately combining ﬂavours has earned them a strong reputation for outstanding food. In fact, it’s one of Michelin-starred chef Galton Blackiston’s favourite restaurants in the whole county – and he's a particular fan of the Duck and Pineapple curry.

Siropas (though he’s known to everyone as ‘OB’) has a refreshing approach to his food, insisting his menu features true Thai tastes rather than including ‘eastern’ dishes from neighbouring countries such as Cambodia and Laos. He’s always more than happy to explain the difference, and if you’re a newcomer to Thai food he’ll gladly help you choose dishes to suit your preferences. The Crawfish Inn is a remarkably cosy and welcoming restaurant – and with only nine tables, the atmosphere allows you to enjoy your meal in quiet and comfortable surroundings. If you can’t decide on what to order, don’t hesitate to ask for OB’s advice. He’s the expert after all, and his recommendations feature some of The Crawfish Inn’s most popular dishes. Start with the Satay or the Thai spare ribs, for example. OB sources his meat from local farmers, and uses herbs and spices imported from Thailand – and the combination of the two makes for a simply outstanding way to start your meal. The charcoal-grilled chicken breasts are sweet, spicy and tangy all at the same time, while the spare ribs are probably the leanest (and almost certainly the tastiest) you’ll enjoy anywhere. Despite the favourite choice of Galton Blackiston, OB will recommend you try his Penang Chicken Curry as your main course. Unlike the more familiar red and

green Thai curries, this is much sweeter, deliciously richer and considerably creamier. Packed with crunchy green beans and bursting with flavour from the fresh kaffir lime leaves, it’s an exceptionally enjoyable meal that will prove to you just why Thai food is so well-respected around the world. Combine it with an order of Prime Grade 5-star rice and a side of OB’s marvellous Pad Thai (a clever noodle-based dish with pork, spring onions, peanuts and eggs) and you’ll realise just how versatile Thai cuisine can be when it’s prepared and cooked properly. OB’s food is simply amazing, and his hospitality is outstanding – it’s rare thing to find a restaurant owner who cares so much about pleasing his diners that names one of his dishes after the restaurant’s very first customer. The gin revolution comes to King’s Lynn... With around 200 diﬀerent gins and an almost limitless combination of garnishes and mixers, the Gin Saloon in King’s Lynn is bringing the nation’s favourite drink to a whole new audience...

here’s no doubt we’re in the middle of a gin revolution at the moment. There are now well over 300 distilleries in the UK, more than double the number operating five years ago, and the Office for National Statistics has even put gin in the basket of goods it uses to measure inflation. A recent YouGov poll revealed that gin has now overtaken vodka to become the most popular spirit in Britain, and earlier this year Waitrose’s spirits buyer John Vine said that sales of artisan gins were

currently up 167% – compared to a 30% rise in mass-produced brands. All of which is music to the ears of Ian Cunliffe, who opened the Gin Saloon in the middle of King’s Lynn a few months ago – with a staggering collection of almost 200 different gins. “I’ve been an avid fan and collector of gin for years, so it’s a bit odd to suddenly find myself fashionable!” he says. “It’s a fantastic and a very refreshing drink, and the role of the Gin Saloon is to help people discover just how incredibly versatile it is.”

And the sheer choice of gins available at the Gin Saloon is the first thing that strikes you when you enter this comfortable and stylish bar, which was remodelled from floor to ceiling by Ian’s business partner Daniel High with carefully-chosen reclaimed timber and handmade lighting. Here, you’ll find gins from famous distilleries in Scotland and Wales, but you’ll also discover varieties from South Africa, Kenya, Norway, Spain and Russia. Norwich, a wasabi gin from Holland, and a lemon drizzle gin from London. Not surprisingly, the menu and tasting notes run to some 20 pages. “The Gin Saloon could easily oﬀer 5,000 gins if we had the space,” says Ian, “but we’re quite selective about the drinks we stock – in fact many of them are produced in small and limited batches of less than 100 bottles. We want to introduce people to new tastes, get them to try diﬀerent things, and enjoy the whole experience.” And the Gin Saloon is the perfect place (and ideal way) to learn that there’s a lot more to gin than meets the

eye; a secret that lies in the virtually endless array of botanicals used to infuse the drink. “Gin is one of the few spirits you can do that with,” says Ian. “You can’t really flavour whisky as it has such a distinctive taste and specific distilling process, but gin is completely different. In fact, some of them are so packed with different and exciting tastes you can simply enjoy them over ice.” Indeed. Ian picks up a bottle at random which contains a gin made with no less than 13 botanicals – including juniper from Macedonia, grains of paradise from Africa, kumquat from Asia, sasparilla berries from America, and quandong from Australia. You could say it’s the world in a glass – and it tastes extraordinary. But the whole Gin Saloon experience extends far beyond the gin itself. Choosing which one to try may be exciting enough, but it’s a sheer delight deciding which of the 20 mixers and over 30 different garnishes to enjoy. “Gin should always be garnished and it should always look theatrical,” says Ian. “Done well it really enhances the flavour, and we’ll garnish our gins with everything from peppercorns to celery – we’ve even got a locally-

produced gin called Whata Hoot that’s infused with samphire, and we’ll actually garnish it with samphire when it’s in season.” But don’t worry. Ian and his team won’t force any garnishes or mixers on you, but they’ll certainly help you discover your preferences and explore new tastes. “I love it when people tell me they don’t like gin, because it only takes a few minutes for them to realise that what they actually dislike is the tonic,” says Ian. “Since we opened we haven’t had a single customer we haven’t been able to ﬁnd a palatable gin for them to enjoy. That’s what makes gin so special, and that’s why I've been a fan of it for so long.” With tasting boards for the adventurous, shortly-to-be-introduced afternoon gin teas, and plans in place for an upstairs restaurant there’s no doubt the Gin Saloon is at the forefront of the local gin revolution. “Gin has always been part of our culture, and at one time over half the drinking establishments in London were gin shops,” Ian says. “It’s one of the most refreshing drinks you can enjoy, and the Gin Saloon is taking that to the next level."

Merchants, Edward III and Hanseatic treasures... The wealth and lasting influence of the medieval merchants of King’s Lynn is hard to overestimate. Paul Richards visits the town’s Minster to take a close look at their monumental memorials

n the south east aisle of the Minster of King’s Lynn you’ll ﬁnd what are almost certainly the largest medieval memorial brasses in England – which are among the most important and masterly of their kind anywhere. In addition to all the fascinating information they contain, you’ll even ﬁnd one of the earliest depictions of a windmill in England. These two Flemish brasses, featuring

life-sized and youthful eﬃgies of local merchants Adam Walsoken and Robert Braunche with their wives demonstrate just how prevalent the Hanseatic inﬂuence in King’s Lynn had become by the 14th century. Constructed of interlocking latten plates (an alloy of copper and zinc), the design is that of the Tournai School of engravers in Flanders, which was also the source of brasses commissioned by Hanseatic merchants in Bruges.

Tournai brasses are widely admired for their intricate design and expert execution, with bold stylised ﬁgures usually possessing staring eyes and ‘ﬁddle-bow’ lips. Flemish incised marble slabs and brasses were taken by ship in boxes from Bruges to Lübeck or King’s Lynn as ballast – and no other English east coast port in the 14th century imported more of these remarkable brasses. There were at least four Tournai KLmagazine November 2018

History brasses in Lynn by the 1370s, but two disappeared in the 18th century – those depicting Robert Attelathe and his wife Joan (originally in the Minster) and the one featuring William Bitering and his wife Julianna (originally in St Nicholas Chapel) are now lost to us. Braunche, Walsoken, Attelathe and Bitering all knew one another; they were members of the Great Guild, the town council and they were mayors. Adam Walsoken died first in 1349, and Braunche, Attelathe and Bitering were undoubtedly impressed when they saw his magnificent Flemish brass – inspiring them to commission similar memorials for themselves. When complete, the marble slabs with their brasses were usually laid flat on the floor in the chancel to avoid disrupting church ceremonies. The Braunche brass in the Minster is the best known because it portrays the ‘Peacock Feast’ – supposedly a record of the grand event in 1349 when this Lynn merchant was mayor and entertained Edward III in the town. However, since the king came to Lynn in 1349 and Braunche didn’t become mayor until 1350, and the men depicted appear to be wearing armour, this can’t be a civic occasion. There are nine men and three women at the table, with a crowned figure in the middle, and the scene includes various musicians and servants. It seems likely the ‘Peacock Feast’ shown on the brass was mythological and never actually happened. Nevertheless, Lynn’s great merchants were certainly associates of Edward III as royal officials and bankers, and they played a part in the return of the Crown Jewels to England. Edward III had pawned them to foreigners to help fund his fight against the French, and from 1339 the ‘magna corona’ was in Trier (near Cologne) in the hands of Archbishop Baldwin – before being passed to Hanseatic merchants in 1343. Tidemann Lemberg from Dortmund and other German bankers took over the loan, and they received Edward III’s crown as security which was probably being stored in Bruges. It wasn’t until June 1345 that the Crown Jewels were finally returned to Edward III in London – but how far he’d settled his huge debt is unclear. Merchants from King’s Lynn were certainly involved in the transaction – William Melchbourne was given an annual pension by the King in 1347 for his services in “redeeming” the Crown Jewels. Robert Braunche (who died in 1364) and his two wives are the principal subjects of the ‘Peacock’ brass.

He was twice mayor of the town and is dressed as a merchant of the time, wearing a long close coat slit from the waist downwards with tight sleeves. Braunche’s hair is worn long and flowing, and his pointed shoes are fastened on the instep with a latchet and he treads on a dragon representing the evil conquered by the prayer in which Braunche is engaged. On either side are his wives Letitia and Margaret, both clothed in the high fashion of women in the reign of Edward III. Both Flemish brasses in the Minster are valuable cultural artefacts, highlighting the faith and fashion of the governing body of Bishop’s Lynn in the 14th century. Its wealthy merchants were clearly ‘Hanse-minded,’ following German practice in having these very expensive memorials manufactured abroad. Such brasses were intended to enhance their civic status and motivate the pious to pray on behalf of the deceased in Purgatory, where their shriven souls might be purged of any remaining sins. They were also family memorials which would have had a much more profound impact on the viewer in the 14th century than today. The wide engraved lines were emphasised in black wax, and the brasses were lavishly gilded to make them even more magnificent. That Braunche’s brass carries the royal coat of arms of Edward III suggests that Lynn’s merchant rulers aspired to become aristocrats or knights – and they owned suits of armour inherited by their sons.

Lynn’s 14th century merchant rulers were wealthy and influential men who owned ships engaged in international trade in corn, fish, salt, wool and wine. Their commercial world embraced Bruges, where they became acquainted with Hanseatic merchants, and it’s probable it was they who acquired Lynn’s exquisite and famous ‘King John Cup’ in that city of wool, luxury trades and bankers. It’s the oldest and finest specimen of English secular medieval cups, although there’s no evidence to suggest it has anything to do with King’s Lynn.

Are you ready for Making Tax Digital? It’s only a few months until a key part of the government’s tax reforms is finally introduced, affecting millions of people and their businesses. Sean Page ACA of Stephenson Smart explains what it will mean for you... he government first announced its preliminary plans to push for digital tax reform in the March 2015 Budget – but after lengthy consultations it was decided to postpone the launch as it was realised that the idea of the appropriate systems being in place within the required timeframe were somewhat unrealistic. That doesn’t mean Making Tax Digital has been consigned to the past, however. In fact, far from it – the initiative is now set to relaunch as of 1st April 2019, requiring VAT registered businesses with taxable turnover above the VAT registration threshold (currently £85,000) to keep records in digital form and file their VAT Returns using computer software. It’s increasingly common for business records and accounts to be kept digitally in a software program – whether on a computer, tablet, or smartphone application, or maintained through such a device and stored using a cloud-based application. The difference Making Tax Digital will make is that the software a business uses must be capable of keeping and maintaining the records specified in the regulations, preparing

their VAT Returns using the information maintained in those digital records and communicating with HMRC digitally via an Application Programming Interface (API) platform. If your digital records are up to date, the software will be able to collate and prepare your return for you. You’ll be able to check the completed return, declare it’s correct and conﬁrm that you want to submit it to HMRC. Once you’ve submitted your return you’ll receive conﬁrmation through your software that it’s been received. Although it may sound complex, the initiative should make all our lives easier, but it also recognises that many businesses operate

outside the digital world. Exemptions from Making Tax Digital can be requested if it’s not reasonably practicable for your business to use digital tools to keep records or submit your returns – for reasons of age, disability, remoteness of location, or any number of other reasons. Although many businesses already use cloud-based accounting software packages such as Xero or Quickbooks it’s not essential to go down this route in order to be compliant with the Making Tax Digital regulations. However, doing so may bring other efficiencies to the management of your business finances. You’ll find software linkages available to give those of you who use a spreadsheet for record keeping help in complying with the new digital requirements. The exact nature of the software will be announced in the coming months. It’s estimated that around 25% of businesses are still unclear on the changes and what it means for them. “We’re concerned that far too many firms still aren’t clear on what Making Tax Digital is, or what it means for their operations,” said the British Chambers of Commerce director of economics and research Mike Spicer recently. “With just months to go before the deadline, these knowledge gaps could make the timeline for change unworkable for many firms.” At Stephenson Smart, we’re determined to make all those likely to be affected by the upcoming reforms fully aware of what the requirements are – and how they and their business can be proactive in preparing for the digital future. An enduring story of faith, fishing and friendship It’s one of the region’s oldest professions, but it’s also one of the least understood. Maxine Thorne looks at the work of the Fishermen’s Mission charity and how it supports local fishermen

argely due to its geographical position, Norfolk has a long and proud tradition of ﬁshing, and thanks to the wonders of television, the realities of the industry are perhaps better understood now than ever before. We often see news items featuring the political pressures the modern ﬁshing industry is subject to, and many of us are fascinated by series which give us a small taste of what life at sea really

means. Who can fail to admire the people who brave everything the sea and weather can throw at them so we can enjoy a fresh fish supper? One organisation that serves individual fishermen – and this remains a largely male industry – is the Fishermen’s Mission; an organisation founded way back in 1881 but which still plays an active role within the fishing communities around the coast of the UK.

Sadly, the realities of life for the fishermen who risk life and limb to bring us the sea’s bounty are perhaps less well known. They include problems surrounding retirement, issues of poverty and isolation, and dealing with the (happily infrequent) loss of fleet colleagues. As in the past, the risks are significant, but the rewards today can be considerably less so. The Fishermen’s Mission main office for our region is in Lowestoft, but the KLmagazine November 2018

organisation’s work spreads around the whole east coast and the rest of the UK. Senior Superintendent Tim Jenkins is well known to fishermen based in King’s Lynn, and talking with him is a lesson in the caring, sharing and proactive support the charity provides to people in one of the most demanding jobs that exists today. “We provide a lifeline of welfare and support to fishermen and their families, even though many things have changed in the 130-years plus since the Mission began its work,” he says. “Modern factors such as encouraging fishermen to take better care of their health is really important, as is our ability to provide financial assistance for rent, food, school uniforms and so on when times are hard.” The Fishermen’s Mission is the only national charity working directly and solely with fishermen and their families. It has no government or Lottery grants available to it, so fundraising is incredibly important, the money raised enabling the charity to offer support to fishermen and their families – and also encouraging involvement in health initiatives such as the Cardiovascular Screening with the Public Health Norfolk programme. “Nowadays, once a fisherman has retired, the camaraderie of the quayside and crew can be lost and is certainly missed,” says Tim, “so the Fishermen’s Mission provides a listening ear for current and former fishermen as well as their families or widows. It’s not just the day-to-day practical things we help with. We also provide emotional

encourages the use of personal flotation devices and distributes them to active fishermen for a modest cost. With fundraising such an essential part of the Fishermen’s Mission’s work, donations can be made via the website or by sponsoring the Rusty Wrecks Rally – an event which involves cars costing no more than £500 undertaking a 2,500km round-trip rally through France, Switzerland and Italy. The Fishermen’s Mission is always looking for any fundraising ideas and suggestions from the public, and volunteers wishing to help the charity are warmly welcomed. There’s no doubt that the fishing heritage of King’s Lynn is still alive and well, and with the support of the services of the Fishermen’s Mission it’s certain that the right support will be at hand whenever and wherever it’s needed.

support for as long as people need us.” Tim was asked about his role as Senior Superintendent, and his visits to King’s Lynn. “The fishermen recognise me by my uniform and they all know what the Fishermen’s Mission can do to help them when they need us,” he says. “The number of boats that have King’s Lynn as their home port is over 40, so the fleet remains vital and productive today, catching cockles, mussels and shrimp. They’re keeping the industry alive.” So, what attracted Tim to take up his role three years ago? “Ours is a Christian faith organisation and as a Christian this is a marvellous job for me,” he says. “What I do is fantastically interesting. I’ve been alongside men at the worst times when a life has been lost, either at sea or due to illness, but also at the very best of times, such as when I read a blessing at a fisherman’s wedding. It’s sweet and it’s sour, but it’s a massive privilege to do it. When I started I was struck by the amount of need in the community of retired fishermen and how well-thought of the charity is by current and former boatmen. The generosity of local fishermen when it comes to information and insights has been invaluable.” In addition to its support work, the Fishermen’s Mission has an educational role, and works proactively to promote safety at sea. Fishermen are, according to the charity’s website, an astonishing 115 times more likely to suffer a fatal accident than the workforce in general. As part of an initiative by the Fishing Industry Safety Group, the Fishermen’s Mission raises awareness and

he brand new £5m arts, heritage and community hub of Wells Maltings on Staithe Street in Wells-nextthe-Sea has enjoyed a fabulous ﬁrst few months, with the new centre hosting a wealth of events and activities. Housing the fascinating Wells Heritage Centre, which focuses on the history of sea and shore, the

contemporary new building has presented concerts and comedy, art exhibitions, drama, talks, charity and community events – and many more are planned for the future. The Countess of Leicester Polly Coke from neighbouring Holkham Hall is Wells Maltings’ patron, and was invited to cut the ribbon in front of a packed auditorium at the oﬃcial opening event back in September, which was held to

thank all funders, staff, volunteers and other key people who’ve helped bring this far-reaching project to fruition. The new complex has a small core team and relies on volunteers for many roles including stewarding, art invigilation and assistance in the Visitor Information Centre. Visitors are also encouraged to sign up to be Friends of Wells Maltings with the Friends scheme, which offers a host of benefits in return

for a small fee. “What a great day for Wells and North Norfolk this is,” Chairman of the Wells Maltings Board of Trustees Sir Tim Lankeste at the launch event. “This magnificent new multi-arts and community centre will have a really positive impact on the lives of the local community and the cultural offering of the whole area.” It was a sentiment echoed by Simon Daykin, Director of Wells Maltings. “Many people ask me why a small town like Wells-next-the-Sea should deserve to have such a world class centre as this, and my response is – why shouldn’t it?” he said. “Wells and North Norfolk deserve it, so let’s celebrate this new centre and what it can bring to the many people who live, work and visit here – connecting people to the arts, to heritage and to each other.” After many years of planning, development, fundraising and community input, the former Maltings building on Staithe Street has been totally transformed, with the prestigious project supported by a host of organisations including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Coastal Communities Fund, North Norfolk District Council, the International Fund for Arts and Culture, Business Rates Pool Fund, Clore Duffield Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Foyle Foundation, FLAG fund and many others – as well as a large number of generous private donors. The striking brick and flint building was constructed in the mid-19th century when Wells was a major exporter of malt, and is now one of the last remaining malt houses in the town. Until 2016, the Maltings hosted a huge range of community events from team meetings, dance classes, birthday parties, craft fairs and wedding receptions, as well as offering spaces for community activities such as Poetry-next-the-Sea. initial preview season in July. The following months were used to feature a select few activities to help the team test the new building and its facilities, and an Autumn Season programme is now in full swing. Wells Maltings is now fully open and the Grade II-listed building comprises a fascinating Heritage Centre, state-ofthe-art theatre/cinema, a welcoming Visitor Information Centre, an attractive contemporary café/bar, a number of galleries and community spaces, and a small retail area. Wells Maltings is also involved in a number of activities with local schools and elsewhere in the local community. Thousands of people have already visited this wonderful new facility, whether following the Wells Heritage Art Trail (which took place in the summer), visiting the art exhibitions, coming along to community classes such as yoga or Pilates, or taking in a show. In fact, there’s always something going on at this landmark cultural centre, from music, film, drama, dance, comedy, art, poetry, heritage, family activities and much more. This month, for example, events include World War One Remembered, a drama and film presentation by Wells Maltings in association with The Creakes Drama Group on Friday 9th November and Marnie, which will be

screened live by satellite from The Metropolitan Opera in New York on Saturday 10th. The late Sir John Hurt moved to North Norfolk in 2009 and was a passionate supporter of the county’s arts and culture scene, and a double bill featuring the actor in The Naked Civil Servant and An Englishman in New York will be presented by Screen-next-theSea on Monday 12th – and that will be followed by the comedy/drama Enter The Dragons on Wednesday 14th and a talk on Working the Sea: The Glaven Ports the following day. The Madness of King George III is being screened live by satellite from the National Theatre on Tuesday 20th, while the live comedy Stand Up Wells will be presented by Wells Maltings and Makin Projects on Thursday 22nd. The drama about The Railway Children’s author Edith Nesbit and her dark domestic life features in Edith In The Dark, being presented by the Baroque Theatre Co on Friday 23rd, and activities for Wells Christmas Tide will be taking place on Saturday 24th. And that’s just November! Next month, Wells Maltings will host all sorts of festive events, including an exciting new free-to-enter Winter Market on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th December. To prepare for the Auditorium within the building, To a large amount of strip out works had to be completed along with structural strengthening works prior to installing the finishes. The first floor was removed, the roof was stripped, new ffeelt, battens and tiles were installed along with insulation. The roof trusses were strengthened and a steel frame was installed to allow for the balcony to be constructed.

The existing Maltings building had been missing its windcatchers for many years so new bespoke operational windcatchers were installed to the building. The existing building also received full external redecoration.

Once the steel frame was installed a precast concrete plank floor was craned in along with a precast concrete staircase. Steel studwork was then fitted to the frame to ffoorm the walls. This was clad with cement board and insulation before the external cladding panels were installed.

While the extension was going up works continued in the existing building. Structural repairs continued to the rooff,, roof windows were installed, new doorways were formed and old openings were infilled as necessary to suit the proposed layout. All of the historic timberwork was cleaned down and coated with oil and the interior was redecorated throughout.

The extension has been built on the old carpark which was at a much higher level than the existing Maltings building. This meant that a lot of excavation work had to be carried out. Following this a fully tanked reinffoorced concrete retaining wall was built with large concrete pad foundations ffoor the new steel frame to sit on.

The walls of the building were clad with brass sheets and roofs have standing seam zinc applied over insulated panels. The extension has large roof lanterns and modern windcatchers that are used to ventilate the building. A glazed atrium links the old and new buildings, with full height curtain wall glazing front and rear plus a large roof lantern is installed over a stainless steel and glass staircase.

Bringing a 400 year old barn into the 21st century Another example of the superb quality building of RGR Developments hen Ryan Rix and Gary New of RGR Developments were asked to convert a 400-yearold barn near Dereham to provide an annexe for guest accommodation, it was a considerable test of their high levels of craftsmanship, exacting standards of build quality, and accurately-detailed costings. “The barn had been used for storage for many years and was in a pretty terrible state when we ﬁrst arrived,” says Ryan. “Despite that, this was exactly the type of project we relish – converting a disued or abandoned space into something that’s both attractive and functional.” But it was quite a challenging task, involving the removal of 30 tons of soil and rubble to remodel the exterior, the total reinstatement of an entire ﬂoor, the installation of an external staircase to maximise the internal accommodation, and the creation of a new roof built around the barn’s original oak trusses.

“That was probably the most complicated part of the whole build,” says Gary. “Thanks to the uneven walls, curved timbers and different heights we eventually had to hand-cut the entire roof to ensure a straight line through the structure. It was an impressive feat of engineering and the amazing thing is that it now actually looks original!” The barn has been carefully finished in a traditional lime render to allow the building to breathe, and RGR Developments installed a new fully-glazed gable and a number of Velux windows to bring light into what’s now become a truly versatile space. For the perfect finishing touch, Ryan and Gary installed a full bathroom suite

and custom-made kitchen featuring different colours and textures, and even created a dedicated heating system using the owners’ own domestic energy supply. Supporting local families when they need it most... For families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH oﬀers a lifeline at an unimaginably diﬃcult time. Now in its 20th year, the local charity is building a new hospice in Norfolk.

ow in its 20th year, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) cares for children and young people with lifethreatening conditions across Norfolk and supports their families. EACH keeps the needs of the family at the heart of everything it does, offering specialist nursing care, short breaks, wellbeing activities, counselling and art and music therapies – and all support is tailored to meet the individual needs of the whole family. The charity has three hospices 110

across East Anglia – Milton in Cambridge, Quidenham in Norfolk and The Treehouse in Ipswich – although EACH offers care and support in the family home and community in addition to the hospice, depending on the wishes of the family. EACH was formed back in 1998 when the hospices at Milton and Quidenham merged. HRH The Duchess of Cambridge became Royal Patron in 2012 and formally opened The Treehouse in Ipswich the same year. Today, the Duchess plays an active role in the charity and her

support helps increase the awareness of the services EACH offers, celebrating the amazing work being done by all children’s hospices across the UK. Last year 1,141 children, young people and family members received care from EACH across East Anglia, 292 of these living in Norfolk. EACH rely on voluntary donations for the majority of its income. Every year it needs to raise more than £6 million from fundraising and over £4 million from its shops across the region. KLmagazine November 2018

A NEW CHILDREN’S HOSPICE FOR NORFOLK Building work is well underway at the charity’s new Norfolk hospice The Nook, which will replace Quidenham. A state-of-the-art hospice based to the south of Norwich, The Nook will serve families across the whole county, allowing EACH to offer even better care to local families. “The new hospice isn’t simply about in-house care, bedrooms and play,” says Jane Campbell, EACH Service Manager at Quidenham. “We’ll be able to offer families improved facilities including purpose-built therapeutic facilities for music, art, hydro and talking therapies. We currently deliver more than 50% of our care in the community, particularly in family homes, and The Nook will provide us with the necessary hub to deliver these vital services.” That’s not to say that EACH is resting on its laurels – the charity actually needs to raise a further £1.7 million to reach its £10 million appeal target. “This may be a very exciting time, but we still have an enormous amount of work to do,” says Jane. “People should continue supporting our appeal so we can provide the purpose-built children's hospice and the services that families in Norfolk need.” THE DIFFERENCE EACH MAKES Noah Bueno was just four years old when he was diagnosed with a brain

tumour, and he and his family were cared for by EACH at Quidenham during his illness. Sadly he died in May 2016, and his family continues to receive bereavement support. “The support we received from EACH was a huge help,” says Noah’s mother Lanie Bueno. “Being able to stay at the hospice helped lessen the pain and meant we were able to spend precious time with Noah. very year, the Yeomen of the Guard (which is the oldest British military corps still in existence, by the way) carefully searches the Houses of Parliament shortly before its official state opening. Their mission is to ensure there are no would-be conspirators hiding in the cellars with well-trimmed goatees and a load of explosives planning on literally bringing down the government. Since they’ve been searching the cellars for over 400 years now without incident, it’s become more of a tradition than a serious anti-terrorist precaution – although it’s worth remembering that the reason it all started in the first place was a very real threat to the government and monarchy of the day. But as always, traditions only bear a passing resemblance to historical truth. We’ve been celebrating Guy Fawkes Night and asking for a ‘penny for the guy’ for centuries, but few people are aware that the ‘guy’ in question wasn’t acting alone – and he wasn’t the mastermind of the Gunpowder Plot either. Guy Fawkes was only one member of a conspiracy involving 13 people, and the ringleader was a charismatic firebrand called Robert Catesby – fans of Game of Thrones will be interested to learn that actor Kit Harington is a distant relative. The reason we don't ‘celebrate’ Robert Catesby Night or pester passers-by for a ‘penny for the Robert’ is that Guy Fawkes drew the short straw in the plot, being chosen to sneak into the cellar under the House of Lords and ignite 36 barrels of gunpowder with the intention of killing King James I and as many MPs as possible. In fact, enough gunpowder had been hidden in the cellar to bring the entire building to the ground and damage most of the neighbouring properties – 114

although modern scholars have now argued convincingly that the gunpowder had degraded and would have done little damage to Parliament even had Guy Fawkes not been discovered. With the customary speed of the British government, it took another 200 years for a lowly clerk to accidentally achieve what a major religious/political conspiracy had failed at. In 1834, an official at the Houses of Parliament thought it would be a good idea to dispose of two cartloads of old wood by burning it in the very same cellar where Guy Fawkes had been discovered. Inevitably, the considerable heat from the raging fire caused the ceiling above the cellar to overheat, and clouds of smoke started seeping through the floors. Regardless, the workmen went home at 5pm, and in the next few hours both houses of Parliament were destroyed along with most of the other buildings on the site – Westminster Hall was only saved by a change in the wind direction. Returning to Guy Fawkes, his fate was never in doubt and he was duly sentenced to be publicly hung, drawn and quartered. It was a particularly inventive and grisly fate (trust me, you don’t want the details) and Guy didn’t fancy the prospect. On his way to the gallows, he literally jumped at his chance, fatally breaking his neck. Undeterred, the authorities decided to draw and quarter his body anyway and send the various pieces to the four corners of the kingdom. Perhaps the most enigmatic legacy of the man lies across the Atlantic and on the other side of South America, some 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Here you’ll find (if you look closely enough) the Galapagos Islands, which contain two uninhabited crescent-shaped islands and two small rocks known

collectively as Guy Fawkes Island. Discovered by the Bishop of Panama by accident when his ship got lost 35 years before Guy Fawkes was born, no one’s entirely sure when or why the place got its name. Back home, it didn’t take long for the would-be revolutionary to become something of a national treasure. Within 24 hours of the capture of Guy Fawkes, Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King’s escape from assassination by lighting bonﬁres – provided “this testemonye of joy be carefull done without any danger or disorder.” Even the law was changed, an Act of Parliament designating November 5th as a day of thanksgiving for “the joyful day of deliverance” – and it remained in force until 1859. As time went by, Guy Fawkes gradually evolved from villain to hero – to the point when he was named as the 30th greatest Briton in a BBC poll, ahead of Henry VIII, Charles Dickens, Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Walter Raleigh. In fact, James Sharpe, professor of history at the University of York once described Guy Fawkes as “the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions” – although that’s a can of worms I’m certainly not about to open.
