From the Houston Livestock Show to today, so much has changed. I use the Houston show as a reference because we can all remember where we were and what we were doing when the show decided to close its doors for 2020, changing everything we know as “normal”.

Through it all, however, we have continued to work diligently as producers in our industry. Cattle people don’t quit. It is our job to persevere and roll with the changes. I am proud to stand with you and call you all my colleagues and friends. The 2020 South Texas Heritage Sale will continue to grow and bring you some of the best genetics from around the country. We have made a few subtle changes to our sale in light of the current situation but nevertheless, the sale is definitely on course with a terrific set of cattle coming.

We are extremely excited with this year’s lineup of functional, quality Santa Gertrudis and Star 5 Santa Gertrudis females. This year’s sale is sizing up to be a most memorable one. Everyone involved has been working very hard, from taking consignments to data collection, photographs, videos, and advertising. All have done their part and I am grateful for all the hard work. Melanie Brewer, our Sale Secretary has worked tirelessly to get all the consignments in order. She’s fired off emails and text messages, keeping all of us on our toes, making sure nothing is forgotten. Melanie, a big, hearty THANK YOU for all your hard work. The Sale Committee has also included two new committee members, Mr. Scott Reese from Reese Ranches in Encinal, Texas and Mr. John Hall, Korban Cattle, McAllen, Texas. SGBI Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences, EPDs, are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the SGBI database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) for each trait being evaluated and are calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. SGBI is a leader in the adoption and implementation of cutting-edge genetic technology. In 2013, SGBI released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus-influenced cattle. The inclusion of DNA into the breed’s EPD calculations (GEEPDs) has resulted in information that is more accurate and predicable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone. Currently, the association’s database contains more than 8,000 performance verifying DNA samples. In addition, to being the first Bos indicus-influenced breed to offer GEEPDs, SGBI was the first beef breed to implement single-step methodology for the incorporation of genetic information into the genetic evaluation. This approach maximizes use of data reported on all animals throughout the pedigree and greatly improves the EPD accuracy. SGBI Indices Due to the amount of performance data submitted over the last 5- year period, the SGBI Board of Directors approved a recalibration of the breed’s genetic evaluation and the development of new selection indices to replace the association’s original selection indices. The Performance Committee ratified the recalibration and indices last month and the January EPD download utilizes the updated configuration. As expected, there was some movement, however, the recalibrated information presents a more accurate picture of an animal’s genetic merit. SGBI Balanced Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It further assumes that producers are either 1) marketing carcasses on the grid or 2) that buyers of their feeder calves base pricing on feedlot and carcass performance. SGBI Cow/Calf Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. However, it assumes all calves are marketed at weaning or soon thereafter. It further assumes that feeder calf buyers don’t base decisions on feedlot or carcass performance, making these traits less relevant to profitability. SGBI Terminal Index: This index assumes that producers are not keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It assumes that producers are marketing carcasses on the grid, making carcass traits relevant to their business. Selection indices will be reported as a percentile ranking (top 1% - bottom 99%) and will replace $ Growth and Carcass Rank, on pedigrees.

A year ago on the day of this very sale, Double G Farms lost its patriarch and father, Gilbert Garza. It was at this sale that our good friend and someone we consider family, Mr. Victor Guerra, created the Gilbert Garza Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Guerra has been a ring man for the South Texas Heritage Sale for some years now. He graciously donated his fee for his duties that day plus another $100.00 to create this honor for our daddy. When we combined him with Schuster’s 701/1, we were able to create something we feel is really special. In our opinion, Miss Dbl.G 907 combines carcass with phenotype, doing extremely well in the show-ring, as well as a REA of 12.7 and IMF of 4.9. She sells bred to LJV 6/165 a paternal brother to the great LJV Mason, owned by Strait Ranches. LJV 6/165 bridges the gap, combining genetics from SR 710 and Mr. Winrock N127, while her dam brings AJH 126/0 to the equation. Miss Dbl. G 907 is halter broke and still show eligible.
