11th Annual

Selling 80+ Bulls and Females March 6th in Pawnee Rock, KS. All bulls have GrowSafe Feed Efficiency data and genomic-enhanced EPDs.

Now on

Fellow Cattlemen, While reflecting on the many changes and uncertainties of the past year, we continue to hope and pray for some normalcy in the future. As we assemble what we think is our best collection of bulls and females in this catalog, one thing we know is that the investment in our genetics and the outcome from those decisions remain constant. If we make progress and continue to pursue our goals, the outcome of this will not go unnoticed. The collection of genetics doesn’t differ much from the past few sales, but the quality runs deeper than it ever has. We were blessed with a larger than average bull crop in both the fall and spring groups leading to a larger number of bulls to select from. We think, top to bottom, we have never assembled a group that is better than this. We were recently asked our opinion of which bulls we thought were the top standouts. We could honestly respond, “What exactly are you looking for?”. The selection is deep enough that there are top quality bulls in every class: heifer bulls, performance bulls, feed efficiency and carcass bulls. The greatest joy, though, is there are many that do all of these things. Not only do they do them, but they excel to the top level of the breed. When we look at some of our promotional items and see that 85% of the offering is in the breed’s elite for BW EPD while performing at the same level for $BMI and $F, it confirms that we are sending out the highest level of genetics. Feed efficiency continues to be a top priority for us at the present time without single trait selecting. This is exciting as it is the evolution of producing cattle that can grow at a more profitable level. We take a lot of pride in the fact the we are one of a very small number of operations where one can go and not only purchase known feed efficiency genetics, but in the near future, purchase the second and third generations of these genetics. We have made some upgrades to our sale facility to hopefully alleviate any worries regarding the current health concern. We hope that you will be willing to join us in person on March 6th. Plan to be with us on Friday night to view the cattle, enjoy supper, and take some time to visit about our program. We will be broadcasting the sale live at a new site, CCI.live. We have the utmost confidence in their system. Please set up your login with them in advance and register to bid prior to the sale. As always, we have provided a list of phone numbers available to you for everything from evaluation to bidding. We hope you will utilize these gentlemen in any capacity that you need. On behalf of the Loving family, we would like to thank you for taking the time to look through the offering. We believe that you will find genetics that will compliment your operation.

Trait Indicators

Look for these trait indicators next to each animal.

Calving Ease Expert

Individuals that are strong on actual performance and EPDs for birthweight and calving ease.

Efficiency Experts

Individuals that lead their contemporary groups in feed efficency.

Performance Experts

High growth individuals having an advantage on performance indicator EPDs and actual performance.

Premium Experts

Individuals that excel on premium based carcass traits and $F.

Overview of EPDs

Carcass Weight (CW): expressed in pounds as a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Calving Ease Direct (CED): The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers. This value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; the more positive a number is the more desirable.

Ribeye Area (REA): REA measures the difference in ribeye area of a bull’s progeny. REA is measured in square inches. A higher REA EPD is indicative of expected larger ribeyes.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters who calve unassisted. The value is expressed as a percentage of unassisted births, with a more positive number being more desirable. Birth Weight (BW): An indicator of birth weight and calving ease. Larger BW EPDs typically, but not always indicate more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight (WW): Weaning weight measures the differences in weight of calves at weaning, and is also reported in pounds. A higher WW EPD indicates an expected higher weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Like other weight traits, YW measure the differences in weight of animals at yearling, and is also expressed in pounds. Higher YW EPDs indicate a higher expected yearling weight. Milk (MK): the expected differences in a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning weight due to their milking ability. Milk is looking at how well daughters milk and how that translates to the weaning weights of their calves. A higher MK EPD indicates a higher weaning weight due to the bull’s daughters’ milking ability. Total Maternal (TM): TM predicts the total difference in weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves at weaning. A portion of this difference in weight comes from the milking ability of the bull’s daughters (MK EPD), and a portion comes from the genes for growth passed from the bull to his daughters and then on to their calves. The TM EPD is calculated by taking ½ of a bull’s WW EPD + his MK EPD. Stayability (ST): The newest addition to the Shorthorn EPD lineup, Stayability is a measure of the percentage of a bull’s daughters that will still be in the herd at six years old. Like CED and CEM, Stayability is expressed as a percentage. A higher ST EPD indicates a higher percentage of daughters staying in the herd.

1. ASA Registration Number 2. Date of Birth 4. PACER Performance/Pacesetter

Calving Ease Direct ($CEZ): This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. British Maternal Index ($BMI): This multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Feedlot ($F): $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F.

1

It is extremely rare when you find those genetics that can tie the entire package together. 9744 has no chinks in the armor. This Optimus son has it all; an extremely stout, masculine phenotype, top tier EPD profile, top shelf feed efficiency numbers, and off the charts IMF to go with a breed leading Marbling EPD. If that wasn’t enough, his pedigree is stacked with two Pacer Performance dams and a Pacesetter sire. You will drive a lot of miles to find the stack of genetic potential that this young sire possesses.

2

There is probably not a better compliment to share the first page with Lot 1 than his 1/2 brother out of the powerful Okie cow family. The Okies have been well-documented as producing the top bulls of our program and 9745 is no exception. He is powerfully featured in nearly every dimension and is near the top in all phases of production from calving ease to performance and feed efficiency. He is also one of the top carcass bulls with a 115 ratio for IMF and a $F in the top 5% of the breed.

A slightly more moderate Answer son that excels in balance. Top 10% CED and BW EPDs to go with well-above breed average growth numbers and displays that balance, as he is one of a handful of bulls that excel in all 3 $indexes. Couple that extraordinary balance with outstanding feed conversion on Growsafe and you have the sire that can do it all, pasture to feedlot.

3

The highest performance Answer son to come to market to date, evidenced by his actual growth performance ratios: 120 for weaning and 111 for yearling and yet right at average for his contemporary group for birthweight. He has the EPD profile to match, as 9759 is at the top of the breed in every measurable category. He is as massive and stout in the pen as he is on paper. He is backed by a breed leading Pacer Performance and Pacesetter family in his pedigree. He defines proven performance.

With nearly identical birth, weaning, and yearling numbers, 9799 is a pea in the pod with Lot 7. He gave up just a little on ADG, but more than made up for it with a drop in feed intake to come out with the low RFI value. If there was a situation where you needed half-brothers, this is your pair.

Stout doesn’t even begin to describe the depth and power this bull possesses. His Leader mother lends a moderate and low birthweight component from the cow side, suggesting he will produce high value replacement females with his massive depth and volume.

Lightest actual birthweight and BW EPD of the black bulls, 9703 also has impressive growth also, as he indexed 110 for weaning.

Sell Shorthorn-Influenced Calves for a Premium Let us partner with you!

Marketing at Weaning If your operation typically sells at weaning, we have buyers ready to purchase Shorthorn influenced calves without your typical market distortion (sorts on color, size, etc.). This eliminates yardage, sale expense, and essentially cuts out the middleman. Partial Ownership to Finish If your desire is to market the cattle to finish weight and maybe your cash flow doesn’t allow for it, we have feeding partners willing to own a percentage of the feeding group. This allows the owner a cash flow up front and still be able to participate in the profitability of finish cattle marketing as well as have the option to achieve any grid based premiums. Feed will be financed to finishing date and settlement will be made at close out. This is a nice option for the producer who has been a typical market at weaning operation that wants to transition. Retained Ownership Finishing The feed, yardage, and expenses are carried for the length of the feeding period and settled at close out. You are paid on the net of sale minus expenses. Our feeding partners have been exceptional in terms of rate of gain as well as feed conversion. They also have delivery rights for USPB and other grid based marketing opportunities. We have maintained a relationship with our feedlot partners for over 20 years and they have fed thousands of head of Shorthorn-influenced cattle. They are very much in tune with the ability of Shorthorn influenced cattle’s ability to gain and convert in the top tier of everything they feed. Allow us the opportunity to help you maximize the full value of Shorthorn genetics.

It is hard to find those bulls that do everything well, but 0260 doesn’t have many flaws. His 20 CED and top 5% BW EPD make him heifer safe. He indexed 104 and 102 for weaning and yearling, and his 4.34 F:G conversion was the lowest in the group. When you put these impressive figures with the fact that he is in the breed’s elite in all 3 $indexes, 0260 is nearly in a class of his own.

A very similar Answer son in his kind to Lot 33, only out of a smaller framed, more moderate cow family. He ratioed 103 for weaning in a contemporary group of 42 head and then excelled on Growsafe to have one of the top ADG values and had a F:G that was two pounds under the average.

Extremely impressive performance out of a first calf heifer in terms of his growth and performance. Right on the average for birth, but ratios 113 for weaning and 110 for yearling with below the group average for feed conversion.

Why

Invests in Feed Efficiency Testing

The simple answer, because feed is the number one controllable

expense in beef production. That’s right, controllable. High feed efficiency can save huge dollars no matter which sector we are talking about; cow/calf, stocker, feedlot. Loving Farms genetics have a track record nearly two decades long of low feed conversion in their feeding environments. We have sought ways to quantify this back to the individual level, but it requires a substantial investment in time and facilities OR a feeding partner that is trying to make the cattle they feed better as well. This is the evolution for us and our feeding partners at HyPlains Feedyard.

“I’ve been feeding Marty Loving’s calves for more than 20 years. We have 20 years worth of data and his calves convert in the top 10% of the cattle we feed, and we feed some pretty good ones. His investment in the GrowSafe program shows his commitment to his customers and their end product.” - Tom Jones, Hy-Plains Feedyard

What should we expect? The first thing is to realize that the bull is only half the equation. Secondly, the females that these sires are mated to will vary as widely as the bulls in this offering. The take away is that this will be a multigenerational process. There will be some successes seen very quickly, others will take longer. Since it isn’t feasible to test every female, the progressive cattleman will select better than average bulls for the components of feed efficiency from now on and the result will be a positive increase in efficiency. How does feed efficiency impact my operation? Here are a couple of scenarios to help quantify what a shift in feed efficiency will mean to you. For both scenarios, assume a 20% increase in feed efficiency. Stocker/Feedlot:

Steers/heifers are placed in the feedlot for an average of 240 days on feed. Assume Dry Matter Intake (DMI) decreases by 20% (50#/hd to 40#/hd) and feed is costing $.049/lb. 240 days x 10% less days = 24 days 24 days x $0.40 yardage = $ 9.60/hd 216 days x 10#/day x $.049/lb. = $105.84/hd $115.44/hd x 40 hd Total savings of 40 head calf crop: $4,617.60

Cow/calf:

Spring calving cows are fed for 120 days from January 1 to May 1. Assuming forage hay cost is $70/ton and 24% protein at $500/ton. A 1300 lb. cow eating 2% of her body weight would consume 26# of dry hay and another 3.5# of protein to meet her requirements. 120 days x 5#/day of hay x $.0375/lb. = $22.50/hd 120 days x .7#/day of protein x $.25/ lb. = $21.00/hd $43.50/hd x 100 cows Total savings in a 120 day period: $4,350.00

Repeat these savings over a 5 year life span of that one bull and no other trait has that return on investment. *LF genetics for low feed conversion average a 8-10% increase in ADG meaning they reach goal weight faster.
