Not many stitchers carry a hammer in their sewing kit, but we’re working on changing that. At Klum House, we build bags that are as strong and resilient as the people making them. Working with classic, natural materials like waxed canvas, leather, and metal, my mission is to teach stitchers how to harness the full power of their home sewing machine and create rugged, stylish bags that are built to last. The Woodland Dopp Kit is a spacious, durable, zipper pouch that’s perfect for travel. This project is a great introduction to working with heavy duty materials on a home sewing machine. Small in size, and quick to make, the Dopp Kit makes a great gift and a useful carrier for all your small things! You’ll master the tricky process of sewing zippers with our step by step instructions designed to break down the most fiddly of techniques! The process then describes how the layers of lining and waxed canvas will be sewn and turned out to form the structure. Then, ‘boxing the corners’ is a method that can be applied to many projects requiring a 3D volume and shape. Finally, the Dopp Kit is a great intro to working with leather and hardware. I want makers to enjoy the process and get lost in the flow of making. The Woodland Dopp kit is designed to build skills and confidence and above all, surprise makers with what they are capable of!

Bag making can seem intimidating to many makers, and even experienced stitchers. The perception is that durable bags are made in materials that require industrial level machinery. My background in factory production gave me a deep knowledge of materials, tools and process. As I made a shift into teaching I realized that home stitchers could apply this knowledge to their own creative ideas and fully harness the power of their home sewing machine. With quality materials and a little ‘know how,’ anyone with a home sewing machine can make a bag to a professional standard, that wouldn’t be out of place in a shop window! That’s why I love working with waxed canvas, the original waterproof fabric which comes in many natural colors and feels high quality to the touch. It is a fabric that shows its story when worked - wrinkles and creases build up, leaving a weathered patina that only gets better with time. The embedded wax creates a grip that makes it easy to sew, and leaves its evidence on your hands. Functionally, it is a tough fabric, ideal for bag structure and durable enough to withstand with heavy use. Sometimes when making, that means not being afraid to put some muscle into manipulating it - “Boss your fabric!” The result gives me total confidence that whatever I throw into it, it will hold! To the waxed canvas, I add rich, buttery leather details like handles, straps and tabs. When students walk into my workshop, the first comment is always that the space smells wonderful from all the leather. I love seeing their eyes light up when they see open marble and wood work surfaces, plus all the tools arranged and waiting for them. The final materials are metal hardware - zippers, rivets, snaps, buckles, O-rings, these metal bits are like the icing on the cake, adding weight, strength, and just a touch of sparkle to your finished bag. The sound of the hammers confidently setting their final rivets is like music to my ears!
