Show your muscles a little extra love after your next sweat session. Consuming a combination of proteins instead of just one can help you build more lean muscle mass and recover faster after a hard workout, according to research. “Proteins are absorbed at different rates; eating more than one kind extends the period of time your muscles have to heal and grow,” says lead study author Greg Paul, Ph.D., global director of sports nutrition at Solae, a soy-ingredient supplier. Whey, a protein found in dairy, is digested and absorbed by your body rapidly, followed by soy protein and casein, a milk protein. When reading nutrition labels, check for the words protein blend, or look for the names of the proteins on the ingredients list. Kellogg’s Special K Protein Snack bars and Luna Protein Bars contain soy and whey. You can also create your own energy snack: Pair a Soy Joy bar with a half cup of skim milk or just drink the milk (chocolate works, too) by itself. —Jacqueline Monti
