Metal music has been my go to since I was a teenager. It’s help me shape my style and personality, the logo designs for some of the bands I listen to perfectly reflect the type of design that I am drawn to.
Rock music is also my favorite, I see myself drawn to both genre’s from classic to new age.

One of my favorite bands that I’ve loved these past few years is In This Moment. I wanted to see if I could bring my art style and colors to one of their album covers. Specifically the album titled ‘Ritual’ which goes into the realm of religion and the concept of being involved with heaven and hell at the same time.

The original album that was created has a very old timey look. Using a lot of sepia tone and dirty textures to give an unsettling vibe. The image of the lead singer Maria Brink floating off the ground gives the impression of demon possession and how she is being used for a ritual.

When I listened to the songs from the album there is a lot of themes related to being referenced as religious figures and being considered part of heaven and part of hell. This started giving me ideas on how the idea of being one of heaven and hell can translate using different colors and images.

While the original album is very monochrome with different shades of brown. I started thinking of ideas to possibly split the color pallet so the idea of good and evil is more of a main theme.

I like to associate good or heaven with the color blue; seeing how heaven is up in the clouds and the sky is obviously light blue.
While evil and hell being represented with red, which is a very strong and powerful color that if used incorrectly can be overwhelming. This is when I started to experiment with different color variations to make the album stand out in my vision.

I started gathering images from the music videos and promotional art made around the time the album was created.
The visuals made the theme of heaven and hell very easy to spot with the contrasting white and black, day and night shots, and many more. I was able to mesh the images together to create the difference between heaven and hell.

These are examples of the process with the colors. When making the album cover I used images from the music videos and albums that were already made.

And here’s the final result! It was mainly a lot of blending and meshing of the images to create this design.

This album is one of my favorites, I loved how I was able to bring my visual style with this band to create a unique take on the themes of the music.
