Bone Densitometry Using DEXA KMH Radiology offers accurate assessments of bone health and overall body composition with our GE Lunar Prodigy Advance using DEXA. The GE Lunar Prodigy uses breakthrough direct digital technology that has been proven to be an extremely precise method for bone density testing and for detecting osteoporosis; a disease characterized by low bone mass and increased risk of fracture. Greater accuracy Since bone mineral density (BMD) can change very slowly, it is important to precisely measure BMD using the shortest interval possible. The Lunar Prodigy Advance uses a direct digital detector, delivering rapid x-ray imaging in only a few seconds. But the best part is, the Prodigy Advance does this using only a fraction of the radiation used in other models. "We are proud of our technology's role in the important fight against osteoporosis," says Dr. Kathleen Gordon, KMH Radiology. "In a single five minute exam, clinicians can access critical information that will allow them to detect issues earlier, diagnose more precisely and provide information that will allow physicians to make better treatment decisions." Once thought to be a normal part of aging, it is now known that osteoporosis can be slowed and fractures avoided with early detection and treatment. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, Osteoporosis is a major public health threat for an estimated 44 million Americans, or 55 percent of the people 50 years of age and older. In the U.S. today, 10 million individuals are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more are estimated to have low bone density, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis and broken bones. While osteoporosis is often thought of as an older person's disease, it can strike at any age.
The Lunar Prodigy Advance uses a direct digital detector, delivering rapid x-ray imaging in only a few seconds. Prodigy Advance does this using only a fraction of the radiation used in other models.
Diagnosis Specialized bone density tests can measure bone density in various sites of the body. Experts recommend a type of bone density test using a central DEXA (which stands for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry). A bone density test performed by a central DEXA can: Tell if a person has low bone density before a fracture occurs Tell if a person’s bones are losing bone density or staying the same when
the test is repeated at intervals of one year or more
Predict the chances that a person will have a fracture in the future Help a person and his or her healthcare provider decide if treatment is needed
Medicare reimburses for bone density testing every two years. An increase in bone density testing and osteoporosis treatment was associated with a decrease in hip fracture incidence. Low bone density, in a person with no symptoms, predicts future fracture risk as well as high cholesterol or high blood pressure predicts the risk of heart disease or stroke.
