URBAN DESIGN

URBAN ECO-TOURISM GOSFORD, NEW SOUTH WALES_AUSTRALIA

PROJECT DETAILS: Spring 2013 Faculty: Catherine Evans Teamwork: Chloe Bristow, Briggita Schyns, Bhavna Arumugam Program(s): AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign Gosford is a transportation hub located two hours north of Sydney, Australia. I collaborated with Australian students in conceptualizing a city attracted by its ecological features and waterfront landscape to reconstruct the built and natural framework of Gosford. This city’s vision is centered around the free-flowing forms and intricacy of an ‘emerald necklace.’

THE URBAN DELTA BALTIMORE, MARYLAND_USA Inner Harbor

Middle Branch

PROJECT DETAILS: Spring 2014 - Current Project Faculty: Barry Kew Teamwork: Tyler Cromleigh, Jennie Ryan, Danielle Sette Program(s): AutoCAD, Photoshop, Rhino, InDesign, Illustrator The city of Baltimore compiled a masterplan for the Middle Branch Watershed and its surrounding areas nearly one decade ago, including the addition of the city’s first casino that is now in its construction phase. With guidance from the Baltimore Ecological Study (BES), including world-renowned scientists, this conceptual masterplan is currently in its second phase of detailed site design.

PROPOSEDCONDITIONS

_This masterplan proposes greater benefits for the Middle Branch watershed and Chesapeake Bay through several design methods shown here.

PIER HEIGHT: 5’0” ABOVE WATER

PROPOSED RECREATION OBSERVATION SPACE PROMENADE CIVIC

AQUATIC GWYNNS FALLS TRAIL EXTENSION

.5 MI

A fixed pier design allows for minimal damage to the terrestrial landscape and river bottom. This permits additional habitats along pilings and recreational activity for public use.

FLOATING DOCKS

These installations will cleanse further contamination into the watershed, absord nutrients, and provide habitat for species both above and below the water’s surface.

FIXED PIER

A variety of rock size and planned placement along the site’s edge will create greater erosion control and provide additional habitat for potential native and new species.

FLOATING WETLANDS

The coastal edge is bordered by native vegetation to enhance the aesthetic and an extension of stormwater filtration from the adajcent parking garage’s green infrastructure.

RIPRAP REVETMENT

The existing Gwynn Falls Trail is extended along the coastal edge to acquire an additional scenic route along the Patapsco River watershed and Middle Branch Greenway.

BIO-SWALE EDGES

GWYNN FALLS TRAIL EXTENSION

PIER LENGTH: VARIES 200-300’

WATER DEPTH: VARIES 2-6’ ALONG COASTAL EDGE SHOWN: 2’0”

The floating design eliminates environmental harm, while creating an interactive experience with the site’s ecological features and provide access to aquatic recreation.

URBAN DESIGN

GROSSMARKTHALLE COLOGNE_GERMANY

_Concept: Using lines of urban identity to establish a gradiant geometry, balancing the built form and green infrastructure.

PROJECT DETAILS: Fall 2013 Faculty: Thomas Knüvener, Johannes Böttger Teamwork: Rachael Stewart, Kyle Harris Program(s): AutoCAD, Photoshop, Sketchup, Illustrator The Grossmarkthalle is an existing wholesale market for commercial services, located at the end of the Roman cardo-maximus. A masterplan for this area was created several years ago, but lacks historic character and an urban identity. This project analyzed the adjacent areas and building architecture to blend its built form and future recreational space in order to encourage growth into the city’s green link, which is in its final phase of completion.

PARTICIPATORY DESIGN

THE BRIGHTON HUB PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA_USA IN COLLABORATION WITH:

Existing Atmosphere - Unmaintained Vacancies

PROJECT DETAILS: Fall 2012 Faculty: Ken Tamminga Program(s): AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop, InDesign The site within Northside, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA, acts as a gateway into the community and consequently holds an important aesthetic appeal for visitors and residents. I worked directly with members of the community in establishing a design and method in reviving community safety, respect and worth. This project was a staple in producing a $50,000 grant for implementation of recreational, urban and ecological spaces within the Northside community. Since then part of this project was maintained and named Sprout Park by the non-profit organization, the Sprout Fund, to enhance the gateway’s aesthetic.
