Born in the Southwestern United States, Stephanie Clark has lived nomadically for the majority of her life. She currently resides and works in Minneapolis, MN. Clark earned a Post-Baccalaureate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts (2011), and a BFA with cum laude honors from The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota (2010). She has been invited to and attended several residency programs including Norðanbál Gamli Skóli, Hrísey, Iceland; Gullkistan, Laugarvatn, Iceland; Artscape Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts, Toronto Island, Toronto, ON, Canada (2014); Vermont Studio Center Residency, Johnson, Vermont (2014); Grin City Collective, Grinnell, Iowa (2013); Contemporary Artists Center at Woodside Residency, Troy, New York (2013); and The Homestead, Willow, Alaska (2012). Throughout the winter and early spring of 2015, she will be migrating through Iceland while residing and working in Reykjavík, Eyvindartunga, Laugarvatn, and Hrísey, Iceland. In early 2015, her work will be featured on the front cover and back cover of the Chicago Review, Issue 59:1.

Brad Trone is finishing his last year at Santa Fe University of Art and Design where he is pursuing a BFA in Photography. Brad’s work is a contemporary blend of documentary and fine art photography which focuses mostly on portraiture. Currently, Brad is traveling around New Mexico photographing people, found still-life’s, and landscapes for his thesis project.

stephanie clark STUDIO ART

Considering concepts relating to my immediate physical immersion in place, my work explores the relationship between environment and perception. My most recent bodies of work are Woolly Islands and Salt Flats | Salt Nights. Both are series born from my interest in understanding the ambiguity and specificity found in how one views landscape. Exploring ideas concerning the sublime and abstraction, I paint small, wood panel paintings that represent moments collected within a particular place and time, but are not beholden to the traditional narrative structures of art historical landscape painting. These paintings are created with concern to one’s physicality in locale and environment. While residing in different communities over time, my work has become oracular: each painting revealing itself through my time spent within a particular landscape or place. The resulting body of work explores nature, ritual and migration. Rejecting the idea of the artist as despot, conqueror, or passive observer, I exist within the landscape, physically experiencing a location in a particular time and space. My work is always grounded in place. These small paintings over time have allowed me to increase self-knowledge and furnish content by exploring landscape through painterly concerns. I reveal intimacy and meaning through mark making and a keen focus on events, organisms, and time spent in the natural world. Each painting expresses disharmony and accord. By effect, these dualities are married to create a body of work that is manifested through my focus on environment, awareness, and the human condition.

I met Ashli and Tyler last summer while they were working at the Farmer’s Market in Santa Fe. They are best friends and seasonal workers at a small farm in Dixon, NM who hailed from Tulsa, OK. I got Ashli’s information because I wanted to try and photograph them at the farm. A couple of months later we finally aligned our schedules and I drove up to meet up with them. They allowed me to follow them around over the course of two days to photograph their daily life. I helped with their chores and went with them into town to shop for clothing and food at Wal-Mart. That night they drank a liter of moonshine and we played cards until midnight. We planned on getting together again before they left town but it never happened. Last I heard they were going back to Tulsa then heading separate ways, Tyler to Washington and Ashli to Colorado.

I put my soul i I put my soul into what I do Last night I drew a funny man With dog eyes and a hanging tongue (Fever Ray – “When I Grow Up”) Do you ever do painting? I have such a beautiful feeling when I’m painting. I’m a self-studied artist. Also I’m left-handed. I tried a lot - music-making and composing (including guitars, keys, vocals, electronics), studying and teaching English, programming, analog and digital photography, web-design, marketing - but now I’m here again to make art as I did when I was a child. I met enough artists, illustrators and tattoo-masters (these guys totally inspired me). The same effect I had after watching some full biographic videos about Andy Warhol. Making art for me is just a way to meditate, to poweroff my brain and ego. When you’re drawing you’re in meditation, you’re in concentration on the process – on something blurred and abstract, – all of your thoughts are a background layer inside of you. I rarely think about the idea of what I’ll paint on any particular day. Everything comes naturally, from unconsciousness. Sometimes I draw a blurred, coloured spot and then this spot leads me to idea of what it may become. It’s wonderful.
