BFrank graduated from Santa Fe University of Art and Design with a BFA in Graphic Design and his sanity intact. He worked quickly to lose the latter. Now he lives in St. Louis, MO where he films stuff, makes stuff, gets paid for stuff, buys stuff, eats stuff, and sometimes even goes places. Things are happening.

andreas lie

Andreas Lie is an engineering student from Haugesund, now living in Bergen, Norway. He’s 24 and has found an international audience with his work, most notably with the series “Norwegian Wood” that merges portraits of Norwegian animals with the landscapes in which they live. The use of digital double exposure provides a unique and wonderful expression, and by using a simple idea in a new way he’s quickly become a recognizable artist. www.andreaslie.com www.society6.com/andreaslie

June uses photography for both self-expression and so that others may express themselves. Her satisfaction comes not from the internal or external validation of her work, but from evoking energy and joy in her subjects. June is moved to experience and live in the stories that unfold around her, and she most values capturing what she sees as genuine. For June, the viewfinder slows time and provides a new and valuable perspective. I am enamored with facial expressions. Eyes, lips, nose, cheeks, all that turns everyone into someone, an emotional being, is fascinating to me. But body language can be just as expressive, if not more so, than facial expressions. Inspired by Rieke Dijkstra, whom I consider a master at capturing the emotional essence of body language, I have begun taking full body portraits. These photographs are the result...

At an early age someone told me I’d make a great artist, and I’ve worked every day to prove them wrong. My cows are still purple, my Santas are still blue, and flying ‘M’s still line the horizon on my drawings. Try and stop me. Once I figure out what I do least terribly, I’m sure I’ll try to stick with that. But for now, I’ll continue to make videos for a company you’ve never heard of, to support taking photos of people you’ll never meet, to support painting random things you threw away, to support designing graphics no one will ever buy. However, McDonalds is about to start serving breakfast ALL DAY, so what is there to worry about?

Lie’s images reflect a deep appreciation for nature and the wildlife that inhabits the wilderness near his home. He is fortunate to live in a place surrounded by majestic mountains and wild spaces, which are undoubtedly an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him in his work. His unique images typically feature a single animal, set in sharp contrast to the negative space that surrounds it, and filled with images of their natural habitats. Contained within the stark shape of the animal you’ll find forest scenes, mountains, water, and other scenic vistas that are then blended seamlessly with the texture of the animal’s fur or feathers. The work of Andreas Lie is truly extraordinary in its subtlety. His images speak volumes about the interconnectedness of nature and the creatures that inhabit this planet alongside us.

KNACK seeks writing of all kinds. We will even consider recipes, reviews, and essays (although we do not prefer anything that is academic). We seek writers whose work has a distinct voice, is character driven, and is subversive but tasteful. We are not interested in fantasy or genre fiction. You may submit up to 25,000 words and as little as one. We accept simultaneous submissions. No cover letter necessary. All submissions must be 12pt, Times New Roman, double-spaced with page numbers and include your name, e-mail, phone number, and genre.

PDF TIFF JPEG

all submissions KNACK encourages all submitters to include an artist statement with their submission. We believe that your perspective of your work and process is as lucrative as the work itself. This may range from your upbringing and/or education as an artist, what type of work you produce, inspirations, etc. If there are specifications or preferences concerning the way in which an image is displayed please include them. A brief biography including your name, age, current location, and portrait of the artist is also encouraged (no more than 700 words).

missed a submission deadline?

do not fear!

KNACK operates on a rolling submission system. This means that we will consider work from any artist at any time. Our “deadlines merely serve as a cutoff for each issue of the magazine. Any and all work sent to knackmagazine1@gmail.com will be considered for submission as long as it follows submission guidelines. The day work is sent merely reflects the issue it will be considered for. Have questions or suggestions? E-mail us. We want to hear your thoughts, comments, and concerns. Sincerely, Ariana Lombardi, Executive Editor

KNACK is requesting material to be reviewed. Reviews extend to any culture-related event that may be happening in the community in which you live. Do you know of an exciting show or exhibition opening? Is there an art collective in your city that deserves some press? Are you a musician, have a band, or are a filmmaker? Send us your CD, movie, or titles of upcoming releases which you’d like to see reviewed in KNACK. We believe that reviews are essential to creating a dialogue about the arts. If something thrills you, we want to know about it and share it with the KNACK community—no matter if you live in the New York or Los Angeles, Montreal or Mexico.

All review material can be sent to knackmagazine1@gmail.com. Please send a copy of CDs and films to 4319 North Greenview Ave, Chicago, IL 60613. If you would like review material returned to you include return postage and packaging. Entries should contain pertinent details such as name, year, release date, websites and links (if applicable). For community events we ask that information be sent up to two months in advance to allow proper time for assignment and review.

We look forward to seeing and hearing your work.
