KNACK seeks writing of all kinds. We will even consider recipes, reviews, and essays (although we do not prefer anything that is academic). We seek writers whose work has a distinct voice, is character driven, and is subversive but tasteful. We are not interested in fantasy or genre fiction. You may submit up to 25,000 words and as little as one. We accept simultaneous submissions. No cover letter necessary. All submissions must be 12pt, Times New Roman, double-spaced with page numbers and include your name, e-mail, phone number, and genre.

KNACK encourages all submitters to include an artist statement with their submission. We believe that your perspective of your work and process is as lucrative as the work itself. A brief biography including your name, age, current location, and portrait of the artist is also encouraged (no more than 700 words).

Kim Schneider grew up in the desert of Albuquerque, New Mexico and has developed a strong focus on graphic design and printmaking. After studying at UMPRUM (The Academy of Art, Architecture & Design) in Prague, Czech Republic for a year, her thematic focus on whimsy, regaining comfort in new living spaces, recalling current experiences, and staying playful throughout one’s worries has expanded and transcended into mediums such as small-scale found object sculptures, varying forms of printmaking, and other digital works. She is currently preparing to move to Berlin with her calico Inka. She holds a BFA in Studio Art, BA in Strategic Communication, and has won the Western Regional Honors Council Award in Open Media for Wino.

My name is Joana Duarte and I am from Portugal. At 22 years old, I am a graduate from Coimbra’s University, Portugal, with a degree in Design & Multimedia.
As a green writer not being signed on the dotted line, Skylar Fray is not a afraid to test the waters on anything. Born and raised in White Plains, New York and the Hudson Valley area, she always knew that she had voice. Throughout her elementary and secondary years, Fray was always involved in her community through the arts. Theatre, singing, visual art, public speaking, and leadership: you name, it she’s done it. Furthering herself, she went to do her schooling in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Santa Fe University of Art and Design. She is currently living, developing, and honing her crafts back in White Plains, New York.

I am a self-taught photographer, born in Berlin and residing in Copenhagen. I am co-founder of the visual arts collective Copenhagen Format, a group of international photographers who collaborate on various art projects and who support emerging artists. I prefer order and symmetry and I usually have a rather minimalistic approach to my work. In the recent years, my focus has shifted more and more towards architecture and the sociological aspects behind it.

The collection of works shown—though they range from t y pe design, to posters, to a bit of sculpture—each piece contains as much whimsy as I could possibly f it into it, and each piece was brought about via my childhood: in the mountains, among the snow, with books, with quirky say ings and stories by the wood burning stove, with ly ing in the grass and learning about predators of prey and work ing as best as I could to soak up nature in general. I think one of the funniest, most awe-inspiring emotions to capture and tr y to encapsulate is “whimsy,” and my art has seemed to shif t to this fun respect in recent years.

Who Cares, Right?... Exactly You know what I’ve realized about human beings? They don’t care unless it’s personal. It’s like, in the movies, you watch this all-around-great person, and everything is going well, until it gets personal. School does not prepare you for, as I call it, the personal shit storm that eventually comes your way in life. Why is this? Because school is just the precursor to life, without the long-term consequences. With school you can go back the next day and try again. Now, I am going to break down my description of two different types of people (of the same species). Within each of these people’s lives, at some point, it gets personal. And they endure their darkest hour. Our first individual follows the rules. They do as they’re told; they like order, symmetry, a plan. They get hit with a shit storm when they stop caring about their life. The minute this happens, whether they’re post-university with no connections, or having a mid-life crisis, life for them is put on hold. It’s a sad reality, and it can happen to anybody. It is only when this first type of person awakens, becomes conscious of how much they needed a wake-up call, that they can get on with the business of living. But they never would have had this realization if things hadn’t gotten personal. Our second type is a horse of a different color. This sort is a rebel: they break the rules and make up their own; they live fast, with sex, drugs, and crime fueling their soul; they fight over petty, meaningless things. They often become parents early and aren’t prepared for the repercussions of parenthood. I dislike this sort. Once this second type encounters their shit storm, they have two paths ahead of them, The first path is the Path of Redemption. So they’ve frivolously wasted their time as an adolescent or twenty-something instead of preparing for life. Redemption comes when they come to terms with this reality and they invest in themselves. Not only for the betterment of their future, but their entire existence. The second path is the Path of Perpetual Deterioration, in which our rebel continues their reality of constant bad habits. This path eventually leads to a dead end if they don’t

reroute their journey. What’s unfortunate is, when our John or Jane Smith is on their deathbed, they are greeted by the ghosts of their missed dreams and opportunities. Rather than having stepped out of themselves to make a change, they are haunted by regret. Pardon my blunt morbidity. But again, people (all-around-great or maverick) don’t care until it happens to them. Notion to critical notion, this idea can easily be won or lost in heated conversation. Regardless, though, life is short and then we die. You can either get caught in your personal shit storm and continue the pity party, or you can predict showers of lemon drops and do something about your current situation. So whether you’re individual 1 or 2, it doesn’t matter; we as humans are given the choice to care or not. In all sincerity, I do.

Stacked is an attempt to highlight the architectural structure of Berlin’s post-war housing estates rather than focus on their social context. By comparing buildings, I noticed that they all have something in common but the architects still maintained small individual features. For me they are not ugly lef tovers from past decades in a city’s skyline; I f ind they tell a stor y which is still relevant today, namely the tension between engineering and the human element. Initially these buildings meant a vast improvement of life for the middle class in Berlin. They provided more inhabitable space, did not cost much in construction, and were built quick ly. With time, however, these buildings proved unnecessar y, and they quick ly became a burden for the cit y as the urban lifestyle of its citizens changed.
