informal luxury Finding new ways to express what is simple, elegant and practical are key to Jo Sharp’s approach to knitwear design. The Dolman sweater in this collection is made with her New Era Merino DK Superwash or Alpaca Kid Lustre yarn, and is a perfect example of her design ethos in action. It’s a lightweight garment that is both flattering in fit and comfortable to wear. Informal luxury and relaxed style are familiar hallmarks of the Jo Sharp brand, and this collection is no exception, with the inclusion of comfortable, sensual garments that are ideal for weekends out and about, or to cosy up with at home. Jo has worked with two yarns together on the needles in a number of projects in this book, to create fabrics that will captivate the imagination, with subtle changes in texture and hue. Alternative shade options are provided alongside each design to enable knitters to interact with the palette and generate new colour combinations of their own. Luxuriously lightweight garments also feature, with larger than usual needles used to create open fabrics that are quick to knit. Most of the projects are suitable for the beginner or average skilled knitter. This book offers a contemporary collection of timeless designs for knitters to make items that are both worthwhile and lasting. In contrast with today’s world of fast fashion, where last season’s wardrobe is hastily cast aside, these lovingly, hand crafted pieces make a welcome change.

General pattern information TENSION At the start of each pattern, the required tension is given. Before beginning, it is most important to check your tension by knitting a tension square. Using the yarn, needle size and stitch pattern specified, cast on 40 sts and work approximately 40 rows. Lay work flat and without stretching, measure 10cm both vertically and horizontally. Mark with pins. Count the stitches and rows between the pins, these should match the required tension. If not, try changing up or down a needle size. If your tension is too loose (too few stitches and rows), try smaller needles. If it is too tight (too many stitches and rows), try larger needles. Incorrect tension will result in a mis-shapen piece.

YARN QUANTITIES Yarn quantities given are approximate estimations based on average requirements using specified tension and Jo Sharp yarn.

COLOUR REPRODUCTION Inaccuracies of some illustrated yarn shades in this book are caused by photographic and printing reproduction processes that are unavoidable.

CARING FOR YOUR HAND KNITS Hand Washing For best results, gently hand wash knitted items in lukewarm water, using a wool detergent. Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water. Rinse again in cold water. DRYING To remove excess moisture after washing, roll garment inside a large towel and gently squeeze. Alternatively, spin dry inside a pillow case. Never tumble dry. Place on a flat surface in the shade to dry, coaxing back into shape whilst damp. Drying flat is recommended. Do not dry directly in front of an open or artificial fire. DRY CLEANING Generally is not recommended as residual dry cleaning chemicals tend to harden hand knitted fabric.
