Staff Spotlight Welcome to our new Employee Interview Section! We wanted to share some of our behind-the-scenes happenings with our customers. In this edition, we are interviewing Patrice, Senior Textile Designer. Patrice is a leader in our design department and is responsible for many of the beautiful fabric designs you love.
HOW HAS YOUR LIFE/UPBRINGING INFLUENCED YOUR WORK?
My mom sewed clothes and costumes for me and my siblings when we were young. I can remember going to the fabric store with her to pick out the patterns and the fabrics. That was my favorite part. I always loved fashion and began sewing at a pretty young age. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST?
I never really knew I could be an artist. Growing up, even though I enjoyed art and making things, I wanted to be a doctor. When I got to college, I moved past the idea of being a doctor and decided that I actually wanted to be a dentist. I majored in biology and ran for office in the pre-dental society. I even worked for a dental lab post college. I realized that this career path wasn't for me when I was unable to achieve the grades I needed to get accepted into dental school. So I changed my major midway through to Fine Art. This led me to discover that a career in textiles was possible, and I ended up going to grad school for my MFA in Fashion Textiles.
That is how I became the textile artist I am today. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK AS A TEXTILE DESIGNER?
Getting to create my own designs and being able to see them on products that people can use/wear.

HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED?
Creative burnout is a real thing and having to be creatively “on” all the time can be a challenge. Visiting museums, taking a trip, or even just sitting at a café to people-watch are some ways I get rejuvenated creatively. I also do a lot of research on current trends in design.
DO YOU STILL SEW? IS THERE A FAVORITE PROJECT YOU LIKE TO WORK ON?
Yes, I sew. There are many projects that I have worked on, from clothes to quilts, but my favorite projects are the ones I make as gifts for loved ones. To me, sewing is not fun when it’s done production style, so when I have time to work on a project that comes from the heart, I enjoy that the most. IS THERE A COLLECTION THAT YOU HAVE DESIGNED THAT IS MEANINGFUL FOR YOU?
Each collection I work on is meaningful in it’s own way. I’m constantly learning as I go, and I find that in each collection I develop, there is a lesson to be learned somehow. WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS CT APART IN THE TEXTILE DESIGN WORLD?
All of our collections are one-of-a-kind and are not sold anywhere else. Our small but mighty in-house design team (me and one other designer) works around the clock to design and produce top quality quilting fabrics that our customers love.
