So much to share with you! You know how you can spend months working on the little details of a project and then suddenly it all comes together into something extraordinary? Well, we have been working on several treats for you and they are now ready to share! Simply Cotton™ is our new line of 100% organic cotton. Who knew that natural cotton could be found in such lovely, subtle colors? We chose sport and worsted weights as the most versatile for baby clothes as well as super soft adult sweaters. And since Simply Cotton™ is unmercerized, I am going to use it for washcloths and dishtowels. As you plan your summer knitting, check out the new colors in Shine™, Comfy™, Crayon™ and Cotlin™. My Classic Lines Cardigan knit-a-long is a wonderful way to explore the new colors we have in each of our lace weight yarn lines—Shimmer™, Gloss™, Alpaca Cloud™, Shadow™ and our newest offering Shadow™ Kettle-Dyed. Getting Ready to Cast On?
There are many different ways to cast on for your knitted project. Using different techniques achieves different effects. Some create a stretchy, flexible edge, and others make a firm foundation. We offer these four less-common cast ons to add to your repertoire.
The Knitted Cast On
The knitted cast on is easy to do, especially if you already know how to make a knit stitch. This is a good all-purpose cast on and creates a stretchy edge to your work. (1) Start with a slip knot on the needle in your left hand. Use your fingers to hold the yarn tail out of the way. (2) Insert the right needle into the slip knot and work a knit stitch, but do NOT slip it off of the left needle. (3) Tilt the right needle to the right and insert the left needle into the loop you’ve pulled up. You are now in position to complete another knit stitch. Repeat the instructions, as you did when you worked into the slip knot above. Tip: If you are having a hard time working your left needle tip into the loop on the right needle, try pulling up a larger loop when you work the knit stitch.
2
3

The Cabled Cast On
This cast on creates a solid edge. It is quite similar to the Knitted Cast On. The difference is in where you insert your needle and draw the loop through. In the Knitted Cast On, you are drawing it from the previous stitch. Here, we draw it from between the two previous stitches. (1) Make a slip knot and slide it onto one needle. Create a second stitch by using the Knitted Cast On method. (2) Insert the tip of your right needle between the two stitches in your left needle. (3) Wrap the yarn around and draw a loop through. (4) Insert your left needle tip into this loop from right to left and remove your right needle from the stitch. (5) Repeat steps 2-4 to create the appropriate number of cast on stitches, lightly tightening the stitches as you go along.
The Tubular Cast On
1 2 3 4 5
This cast on leaves a nice, stretchy edge. It is specific to k1, p1 ribbing. (1) Begin with a length of waste yarn. Cast on half of the total number of stitches you need. (If you need an odd number of stitches, cast on half + 1 stitch.) Cut the waste yarn, leaving a 6" tail. (2) Change to the working yarn and complete the first row as follows: *K1, YO. Repeat from * to last stitch. K1. (3) Complete the second row as follows: *yarn forward, slip one stitch purlwise, yarn back, K1. Repeat from * and slip the final stitch. (4) Complete the third row as follows: *K1, yarn forward, slip one stitch purlwise, yarn back. Repeat from * and K1. Repeat the second and third rows. Change to K1, P1 ribbing. On your first row you will begin with a purl stitch. (5) Once you have worked several more rows of ribbing, you can carefully snip the waste yarn and extract it from the cast on edge. (6) You will be left with a stretchy edge that is well suited to your ribbing.

The Crocheted Provisional Cast On
This method allows you to remove the cast on row in order to pick up and use the live stitches at a later time. It is particularly handy for adding a decorative border or for increasing the length of a sweater that is knit from the bottom up. You will need a crochet hook and a length of yarn in a contrasting color for this technique. (1) Begin by placing a slip knot on the crochet hook in the contrasting yarn. (2) Wrap the yarn around the back of the crochet hook and across the front. (3) Use the hook to draw a loop through the original slip knot. You have now made one chain. (4) Continue to repeat this motion until you have made as many chains as you need in your cast on row. You may want to make a few extra, just in case. (5) When you are done making your chains, cut your yarn and draw it loosely through the loop that was on your crochet hook. If you hold the chain in your hands, you will see a ridge of bumps running along one side. These bumps are what you will use to pick up your first row of knit stitches. (6) Insert your knitting needle tip into the first bump. (7) Wrap your yarn around the needle and pull up a loop to pick up one stitch. (8) Continue to insert your tip into the bumps along the crochet chain and pick up stitches until you have picked up the number of stitches you need in your cast on row. (9) When you are ready you can return to the cast on edge and remove your crochet chain. Undo the threaded end of the contrasting yarn to prepare for the chain removal. Gently pull the contrasting yarn to remove the crocheted chain. This will reveal a set of live knit stitches. Insert your needle into these stitches and you are ready to begin knitting downward.

Binding Off
You’ve finished knitting and now it’s time to bind off the final edge! There are many different techniques for binding off. Choose the bind off technique that fits your preferences for how stretchy (or firm) you’d like your finished edge to be. Here are two alternatives to the standard bind off.
I-Cord Bind Off
This bind off method leaves a clean, corded edging on your knitting, adding a subtle yet decorative air. Try it on sweater bottoms, purses, or felting. (1) To begin, cast on 3 extra stitches at the beginning of the row you’re going to bind off. (2)*Next, knit two stitches and slip the third stitch knitwise. (3) Knit one more stitch. You will now have 4 stitches on your right needle. (4) Use your left needle tip to pass the slipped stitch over the last knitted stitch. This will leave you with three stitches on your right needle. (5) Slip these three stitches back onto the left needle tip, purlwise. Tug on the working yarn to tighten up the stitches. (6) Repeat these steps from * until only three stitches remain. Cut the yarn and draw through the remaining stitches.
1 2 3 4 5
Sewn Bind Off
The sewn bind off is a great match for most cast ons. It works quite well with garter stitch fabric and can be made looser or tighter based on your sewing tension. (1) Begin by cutting the working yarn to about twice as long as your finished piece of knitting. Thread that yarn onto a needle. (2) *Pass the yarn needle through the first two stitches from right to left. (3) Pass the yarn needle through the first stitch on the knitting needle from left to right. (4) Drop the first stitch off of the knitting needle. (5) Repeat from * until one stitch remains. Sew through this last stitch from right to left. You will be left with a flexible edged bind off.

4 4) Locking Stitch Markers These locking stitch markers were designed to hook into the knitted stitch within a row and will not slip out while you continue working. Use them to mark increases or decreases in your pattern... or use them to mark a mistake that you need to rip back to or catch that dropped stitch before it runs down through what you have already knitted. 20 markers that will slide easily on needles up to US size 8 in a convenient storage pouch. 80592
Your Cost $1.99
5) Split Ring Stitch Markers These split ring markers allow you to use them on your needle to mark stitches, or to hang on your knitting to mark rows, decreases, increases or even mistakes. They are easy to slip onto a needle in the middle of you work. 24 markers that will fit up to US size 8 in a convenient storage pouch. 80584

12) Knitting Yarn Ball Winder Transform hanks or skeins into compact center-pull balls that sit nicely while you knit. As with our Options needles, we interviewed knitters to find out what they would like best in a ball winder—what we found is that everyone is different. Some knitters prefer to hold their ball winder while some prefer to clamp it to a table, so we created a ball winder that could do both. Use the clamp for tables or connect the ergonomic handle to use when you want to hold it. Best when used in tandem with the Yarn Swift (Item #80083). 80583
Your Cost $19.99
13) Cable Knitting Needles The technique for creating cabled sweaters is to move a set of stitches behind or in front of others to twist them around each other. These metal cable needles are designed to securely hold stitches out of the way while you move other stitches around them. The regular needle (A-80579) hangs down taking up less room when you are working on socks or sleeves. The bulky needle (B-80578) is perfect for the chunky yarns that are so popular. If you are using traditionally sized yarn, the center scoop needle (C-80580) works well.

15) Sock Knitting Needle Holders If you have ever been impaled by a sharp double-pointed needle, then you can appreciate the need for keeping yourself and your projects protected while they are still attached to the needles. These ingenious little coated paper board tubes will protect your DPNs and your project while still in progress. They extend to hold both the shortest and longest needles, completely encasing the needles to protect their tips as well. Protect your investment in DPNs with this clever device. Blocking Pins
The double pins can quickly pierce and firmly hold knit items while blocking. The grip of the double pin is bent for ease in handling. Packaged in a sturdy plastic case with slide out drawer. 35 pins per package. 80590
Lace Blocking Wires
Simply slip the wire through the edges of your lace project and place pins along the inside of the wires to hold them in place while the lace dries. If you have scalloped edges you will want to slip the wire through the outer edges of your scallops to emphasize them. Set comes with 15 (32½" long) straight wires, 20 nickelplated T-pins and blocking instructions. All wires are stainless steel and rust-proof. The first time you use your blocking wires, wipe them with a soft cloth to remove manufacturing residue. 80589
