Hackerspace • Wikipedia: A hackerspace (also referred to as a hacklab, makerspace, or hackspace) is a community-operated workspace where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialize and/or collaborate.

Foundations • c-base (1995) from Berlin is recognized as one of the first independent, standalone hackerspaces in the world, not affiliated with a school, university, or company. Wired writes that "European groups, particularly in Germany, have a long tradition of this kind of activity". • Metalab, founded in 2006, is generally considered to have pioneered the funding principles that enabled rapid spread of the concept.
