GRIGGS AMERICAN
HIGH SCHOOL
2018 ANNUAL REPORT
At the end of the day, as an SDA institution, committed to the mission of the church, what gives us the greatest joy and satisfaction is that the GIA High School program has proven to be an evangelistic tool in groups that are hard to reach. There are families who will not send their child to a regular Adventist school, but choose to do so because of the High School program! And that is when we have the opportunity to share not only a great academic program, but also our Christian faith.

Community Service As a faith - affirming Christian institution, UNASP provides plenty of opportunities for our students to develop a richer perspective of the world they live in by engaging in various forms of Community Service. Students grow in their understanding of what it means to be disciples of Christ by working in nursing homes, orphanages, health fairs, and lending a hand to the needy. Several of our students participate in our life-changing, 2 week-long mission trips to the Amazon and other places, where they help build schools, aid in medical assistance, and teach children. We’ve found that students benefit greatly—both academically and emotionally—from volunteering their time to make the community and world a better place. When students get involved in community service, they not only help others — they expand their worldview, develop empathy and leadership skills, and realize how their actions can have a positive impact. They also return to the classroom realizing how what they’re learning applies to the real world, which reinvigorates their passion for learning.

Intensives Eligible students are able to get ahead in the program by enrolling in one of our Winter or Summer Intensives. These take place either abroad (in the US or England), or at one of our SDA school campuses in Brazil. Students work hard to complete the required 120-hour requisite to earn a High School credit, while still enjoying some time to get to know each other, and have fun as they learn. We have successfully completed 5 different Intensive Courses with a high rate of satisfaction among students, their families and host schools.

Yearbook Clearly, a yearbook captures memories that are the essence of High School life. However, considering yearbooks are not known in Brazilian culture, as partial requirement for their Computer class, our students had to learn that a yearbook is more than a publication that reflects the events and lives of people involved with a school during that given year. They had to learn how to produce it. In these ways, the yearbook still fulfills some standard roles: it is a memory book, a history book, a record book, and/or a reference book. We also believe that it is a public relations tool for our school. While a yearbook should be all of the above, we would like to add three adjectives to the list of things a yearbook should be: honest, thorough and accurate. We had the joy to have our first yearbook completely produced by students.

UN Model During the American Government course, students participate in a United Nations model with emphasis on the role of the General Assembly or on the dynamics of its Security Council.
