ART CITY KNOKKE-HEIST 24 A R T W ORK S IN VA RIOUS LOC ATIONS IN THE CIT Y

KNOKKE-HEIST, AN ART CITY. Knokke-Heist has always had a penchant for beauty. A beautifully dressed plate in a Michelin-starred restaurant, a stylish window display in the flagship store of a famous fashion brand, a lovely exotic long drink on the beach, Flanagan’s leaping ‘hare’ at sunset or a glass of champagne during the open house of the galleries/Art Knokke-Heist. ARTWORKS. ART BRANDS. This brochure tells art aficionados where they can find all the art in public spaces in Knokke-Heist. Visual art, in traditional materials such as granite and bronze as well as man-made materials including artificial resin or mirrored stainless steel. Not just sculptures, but cityscapes as Knokke-Heist’s art heritage also includes several squares, where the layout is the outcome of an inspiring collaboration between the architect and a visual artist. The artworks are the property of the municipality of Knokke-Heist or have been loaned to the municipality by the owner. In other instances, the artworks are installed on private land, but can be seen from the street. Discovering these unique artworks is just another fun way of exploring the art city of Knokke-Heist at your own pace.

NEST

(2003)

CLAIRE TODD (KINGSTON-ON-THAMES (UK)1971) Todd trained at various British and European academies. She graduated from the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 1999. This versatile artist excels in various disciplines including sculpture, film direction, costume design, drawing and printing. She lives and works in Dundee, Scotland. Todd’s works have been exhibited in various galleries in recent years, including at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, Kaapeli Helsinki and the Film Museum in Amsterdam. In April 2003, the artwork Nest was inaugurated after the redevelopment of the square in Bakkerstraat. Todd has installed a basin with a fountain in this intimate setting. The artwork itself is made of colourful ceramics, and represents a tree trunk with a bird’s nest, with a few young birds in it, with their beaks wide open. The artist imagined that the neighbourhood children would be able to frolic in the basin.

STANDING FIGURE AND TORSO (1999)

PHILIP VAN ISACKER (MECHELEN, 1949) Philip Van Isacker (the son of the author Frans Van Isacker) studied law and art history at the University of Ghent. He only became a sculptor, painter and conceptual artist after his studies. Van Isacker only really emerged as an artist in 1986 however when he participated in Chambres d’amis, Jan Hoet’s internationally-acclaimed exhibition project. He uses materials with a very low resistance, letting simple shapes and materials engage in a unique dialogue with their surroundings. He is one of the few contemporary artists to start from traditional sculpture. Instead of finishing the human figures he creates, he purposefully limits himself to some body parts instead or merely showcases the torso of a human figure. These two male figures and meditative sculptures have been sculpted with great care, as if with a caress and seem a little lost in nature.

A FISHERMAN’S FRIEND (2009)

PETER ROGIERS (ANTWERP, 1967) ‘I’ve always liked to draw, since I was a child but my family was not that art-minded. I only had comic strips. I learnt about all the rest at the academy. I enrolled in graphic design, which in turn inspired me to create sculptures over time.’ Excerpt from: ‘Hilde vraagt, 85 interviews met Belgische kunstenaars’ www.hildevraagt.be Rogiers is a Flemish sculptor and installation artist, who is inspired by artists such as Francis Bacon and Franz West. In his work he refers to Pablo Picasso’s iconography. But comic strips, underground culture such as B films or cult comics also influence him. Rogiers’s sculptures clearly try to capture movement in their slightly hunched, distorted and lively poses. For Beaufort03 (2009) Rogiers created a tortuous aluminium sculpture. The figure seems to emerge from the dark water of a swamp, covered in mud, or seaweed perhaps. The title refers to the famous brand of British throat lozenges.

SOCIAL SOFA

(2010)

PROJECT FROM TILBURG (NL) Social Sofa creates mosaic products, offering artists and people with a disadvantage in the labour market a new opportunity and a career. The first sofas were installed in Ravenna, Barcelona, Knokke and Munich. The 15 artistic mosaic benches are centrally located, in the garden of the Scharpoord cultural centre. Every ‘sofa’ took 600 hours on average to complete, with a team of 15 artists. Social Sofa’s mosaic benches are concrete outdoor benches, with different designs. The team prefers to work with mosaics as the sun’s UV rays do not damage the colours of the glass.

TĂŠTE

(2001)

JEAN-MICHEL FOLON (UCCLE, 1934 – MONACO, 2005) Over the years, Jean-Michel Folon has become the figurehead of the contemporary generation of watercolour artists and sculptors, influencing the profile and evolution of European art of the 20th and 21st century, because of his amazing artistic versatility. Folon has collaborated on a dazzling array of projects. He designed theatre sets and produced animated films and short films. He created the emblem for the 200th anniversary festivities of the French Revolution and illustrated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Amnesty International Belgium. Folon also designed stained glass windows and murals. The man with the hat has taken on iconic status and even was one of the key figures in the famous credits of French TV broadcaster Antenne 2 from 1975 until 1983.

REDDERSSTOEL

(2003)

KRIS MARTIN (KORTRIJK, 1972) Kris Martin (Kortrijk, 1972) is a conceptual artist, who originally trained as an architect. He likes to use different materials, including ceramics, stone and metal as well as found objects. He likes to use time and man’s fate as the leitmotivs for his works, which are mainly conceptual in nature. ‘An artwork is like lasagne: nobody will want to cut into it and peel back the deeper layers if the crust looks dull and grey.’ Martin in Schamper, the student magazine of Ghent University. A simple lifeguard chair, in stainless steel, polished to a high gloss, near the water line, which has been turned round to face the land. The sculpture is supposed to make us think: ‘To continuously question ourselves in a constantly hanging world; to gaze at an endless distance and to look back critically at the same time. There’s nobody in the chair, nobody can save us. Only we can save ourselves, once we come to this realisation.’ Martin’s work has been exhibited among others at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the White Cube in London. EVA

(1974)

EUGÈNE DODEIGNE (SPRIMONT, 1923) The sculptor and draughtman Eugène Dodeigne trained with his father, a French stonemason. Dodeigne moved to France studying in Tourcoing and Paris. His earlier works had less erratic shapes. Around 1955, the sculptor discovered the quarry of Soignies in the south of Belgium. In the Sixties his works became more expressive and rougher as he discovered the work of such artists as Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier. From the Seventies onwards, many of his monumental sculptures were installed in the public space of several cities. One of Dodeigne’s better-known works is the monument on the site of the former Neuengamme concentration camp near Hanover, which was inaugurated in 1989. Dodeigne’s work Eva, which is made of Burgundian stone, was installed in front of the Casino as a tribute to Gustave Nellens (1907-1971), the casino’s owner and a promotor of Knokke-Heist.

INTERIOR LIGHTING

(2003)

INGO MAURER (REICHENAU (D), 1932) Ingo Maurer studied typography but soon started to focus on the design of light sources. He moved to Munich in 1966 where he designed his first luminaires. He started experimenting with LED technology early on. To date, he has created over 120 different luminaires and lighting systems, which are all in production. ‘As a child I was already fascinated by the incandescent light bulb. I think it is the perfect embodiment of the fusion between industry and poetry...’ One of Maurer’s best known and most iconic designs is the Bulb table lamp. You can find Maurer’s designs in various museums including the MoMa in New York. The ceiling lights in the Scharpoord Cultural Centre are made of 5 braided mats, of 4 x 4 neon tube lights each, in various, bold colour combinations.

NEON ARTWORK ‘UNTITLED’ (1999)

NARCISSE TORDOIR (MECHELEN, 1954) Narcisse Tordoir is an influential artist who emerged in the Eighties when he pushed back boundaries among others in the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, with art that was based on a clear, transparent, plastic language, that was indebted to the art of René Magritte. In the past five years, Tordoir has attempted ‘to reinvent painting’. Using Photoshop, he creates digital collages of his own versions of famous works of painters like the Venetian rococo painter Tiepolo. He then prints the result on canvas, and then sets to work with oils or acrylics. The outcome is a recognisable representation, which is inspired by a historical work. In his neon artwork ‘Untitled’, Tordoir wants the spectator to give his imagination free rein. His work inspires a sense of mystery: while you can understand the figures, you are unable to explain them. A harmonious interaction between reason and emotion.

HEADS / LEMURS

(2004)

FRANZ WEST (WENEN, 1947 – 2012) Franz West is one of the most prominent contemporary Austrian artists. He initially used papier-maché for his artworks, subsequently switching to polyester and even aluminium in the Eighties. He has represented Austria at various iterations of the Biennale di Venezia. In 2004, Rubensplein was redeveloped in collaboration with the architect’s firm Robbrecht & Daem (Concertgebouw Bruges) and the Austrian painter Franz West. The Lemurs on their pedestals, combined with the special design and the unique tiling, combine to create a very interesting artwork. These extremely plastic heads, the shapes of which have been kneaded from a primary mass, are almost carnivalesque. They are executed in an artificial resin that can withstand the rugged sea climate, the storms, the erosion by sand and the bright light. In 2011, West received the Leone d’Oro at the Biennale di Venezia for his career as an artist.

TWO LARGE AVL MEN

(2000)

JOEP VAN LIESHOUT (RAVENSTEIN (NL), 1963) Van Lieshout and his studio represent the ‘new artist’, the so-called hybrid artist. These artists combines an artistic practice with a professional organisation, presenting their work in very different ways: as art, design, architecture, an individual or a company. Since 1995, he has been working under the name Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL). Van Lieshout is mainly famous for his polyester structures (3 to 9 metres tall). This super-individualist, as he likes to call himself, has already won several awards, including the 1992 Prix de Rome. The two large AVL men greet each other in the square, which has an obvious symbolic value as a crossroads for incoming, outgoing and through traffic. The men have since gone on to become a landmark in Knokke-Heist, because of their colour and monumental scale.

LICHTTORENPLEIN (2007)

GERT VERHOEVEN (LEUVEN, 1964) The artist Gert Verhoeven and the architect’s firm E&L were asked to develop a concept for the square, transforming it into a nice public space, with a fountain, benches and a replica of a nineteenth-century lighthouse on the north side of the square, to be used as the new tourist office. The square is all about colour, with tiles in different hues, a pink fountain, steps and sitting elements in polished monoblocks. The tourist office moved into its new building in Lichttorenplein along Knokke-Heist’s Zeedijk in October 2007. The old lighthouse from 1872 was demolished in 1954 but revived as part of the design for the main building. While it no longer has a function as such, it has become a symbolic beacon for the tens of thousands of tourists who require information about our seaside resort.

IJZERPARK ALDRIK HEIRMAN (GHENT, 1966) JAN VERCRUYSSE (OSTEND, 1948) Aldrik Heirman (Gent, 1966) is a Belgian landscape architect and tree grower. Everything he designs must first and foremost be viable: his designs are inspired by the experience. Heirman is a firm believer in spontaneous growth instead of forced selections. Jan Vercruysse (Ostend, 1948) is one of the most influential Belgian artists and an established name in the visual arts of the past decades. Vercruysse’s plastic work mainly refers to architecture and the theatre. In a sense, IJzerpark is like a green lung in Knokke-Heist, near Dumortierlaan. The landscape architect Aldrik Heirman has transformed it into an undulating dune landscape. Paths with cosy corners to sit wind their way through the sandy park. You can also visit the ‘Garden of Pleasure’, a maze that was created by the artist Jan Vercruysse.

ROSE DES VENTS II

(1995)

WIM DELVOYE (WERVIK, 1965) Delvoye takes a keen interest in artisan craftsmanship and production processes. His work is often very ironic. He likes to provoke and confront. At the same time, his art is extremely serious and his creations often fuel discussions. He likes subtle meanings and associations. The pig, for example, is a creature that used to live in the wild and is quite intelligent. But nowadays it has become an industrial product, a pale pink counterpart of the naked, white human, the proverbial example of stupidity. The ‘pissing angel’ in patinated polyester, which has been repudiated as blasphemous and welcomed by locals and tourists alike is both a compass and a fountain. Here again Delvoye confronts religious kitsch with popular obscenity. Wim Delvoye: ‘The more people speak ill of my angel, the better. At least this means they are looking at it. People find it dirty while excretions are actually very hygienic. I can’t stand filth.’

TOMORROW MAN MADE BY THE SEA (2009)

UCCLE?

CATHERINE FRANÇOIS (UKKEL, 1963) François studied communication sciences, but was also interested in various art disciplines, including portraits, paintings and sculpture. Since 1996, she has worked as a sculptor. She mainly uses the lost wax process, but also likes to experiment with such materials as foam plastic, wood, textile or glass. Many of her sculptures feature cavities or holes, with which she wants to capture a destructive energy. The artist tries to reconcile extremes in her works. She wants to demonstrate that birth and destruction are inextricably linked because everything is in a state of constant flux. François also tries to incorporate nature in her sculptures. The idea is that Tomorrow man, which has been installed on a breaker, erodes and changes colour. The sculpture is literally exposed to the elements, at low and high tide, to the sun, the wind and the rain. The 2-metre tall hunched over figure, which weighs 400 kilos, bravely faces the oncoming waves. And that is the symbolic meaning that François wants to convey in her sculpture: man’s struggle against nature.

DE ZEE, DIE GROTE BEELDHOUWER

(1989)

UCCLE?

JEAN-MICHEL FOLON (UKKEL, 1934 – MONACO, 2005) Folon has always had a soft spot for Knokke-Heist, where he used to spend the summer during his childhood. He was inspired by René Magritte’s work for the sculpture on the breaker. The man with the hat also resembles Inspector Maigret of Georges Simenon’s eponymous crime novels. The work’s name was inspired by Marguerite Yourcenar’s essay on art, ‘Time, that mighty sculptor’. In a sense, ‘La Mer, ce grand sculpteur’, is modelled twice a day because of its position on a breaker. The Folon Foundation (2000), in the Solvay Estate in La Hulpe, has a collection of 500 works by the artist.

ANOTHER TIME XVI (2/5) (1995)

ANTONY GORMLEY (HAMPSTEAD (UK) 1950) Gormley studied archaeology, anthropology and art history. He perfected his sculpture skills at various renowned British institutions. He has received several awards and prizes, including the 1994 Turner Prize. Another Time is a multiple, made using one of the moulds of the ‘Another Place’ sculpture group (2007), a permanent installation on Crosby Beach near the mouth of the River Mersey in Liverpool. The multiples pop up in some of the most unexpected places around the world This is Gormley’s favourite theme, an isolated human body against the vast expanse of space in which it is installed. The sculpture represents a 1.91-metre tall stylised human figure. It is made of cast iron and weighs 630 kilos.

THE POET

(1956)

OSSIP ZADKINE (SMOLENSK (BELARUS), 1890 - PARIS (F), 1967) Ossip Zadkine, a French visual artist of Belarussian origin, is mainly known for his sculptures but he also created a huge number of lithographs and gouaches. His work is clearly influenced by cubism, surrealism and African primitive art. His early creations have more hermetic shapes, with a cubist structure. Over time, his sculptures became freer, because of the more harmonious connection between volumes and cavities. ‘The Poet’ is a bronze figure on square stone pedestals and represents ‘the freedom singer’. The town of Knokke-Heist acquired the sculpture after the Zadkine exhibition in 1963 in the Casino of Knokke. The sensitive poet clutches Orpheus’s lyre against his chest. It is an ‘unfinished’ sculpture of a man, which sprung forth from a knotted branch, featuring hieroglyphs/fragments from Paul Eluard’s poem ‘Liberté’.

SOCORRISTAS DE BIARRITZ X-X AURORA CAÑERO (MADRID (E), 1940) Aurora Cañero has been working in bronze for over thirty years. She is an internationally-acclaimed and respected artist, who creates poetic and unique figures, that make the spectator dream away. Her sculptures exude tranquillity, silence, love, meditation and humour. The art critic José Marín-Medina: ‘Cañero’s work surprises, conquers and seduces the spectator. When you look at her sculptures, you soon realise there is a link with our culture’s visual and historic memory. At the same time, they inspire an emotional process, drawing upon our sensibilities.’

4 MONOLITHS

(1991)

ULRICH RÜCKRIEM (DÜSSELDORF, 1938) Rückriem started out his career as a stonemason, working on the restoration of Cologne’s cathedral among others. From 1962 onwards, he started to create abstract sculptures, in wood, steel and finally solely in stone. Rückriem is more of a minimalist, choosing to concentrate on the essential characteristics of sculpture, i.e., size, volume, material, processes, space and location. The artist lives and works in Clonegal, County Carlow, Ireland. Rückriem often cuts and cleaves the stone along straight lines. These fault lines are a typical characteristic of Rückriem’s Minimal Art. The four colossal blocks of Austrian granite weigh 48 tons. The visible cavities and fault lines are the normal traces of the sculptural process. The proportions are in accordance with mathematical principles and are in harmony with the location in spite of their monumental size. This four-piece puzzle can be assembled into one whole.

HOSPITALITY

(1990)

BARRY FLANAGAN (PRESTATYN (UK) 1941 – IBIZA, 2009) Flanagan is one of the most prominent figures in post-war sculpture and a member of the rare group of artists whose work appeals to large cross-sections of the population. His majestic bronze hares, that are installed in public spaces across the world, are world-famous. His sculptures have become landmarks, not just in the dunes of the Zwin Plain, but along New York’s Park Avenue and in Grant Park in Chicago. The creature embodies a spirit of freedom, independence, dynamism, fertility, power and individuality. A hare and not a rabbit, which one would expect to find in this habitat, is easily integrated in our dunes. ‘Hospitality’ symbolises the warm reception that awaits you in our seaside resort. The locals call it the ‘keuning van ’t Zwin’, ‘Bugs Bunny’ or ‘’t keun’.

WESTERN

(2009)

DIRK ZOETE (ROESELARE, 1969) Zoete’s work mainly consists of drawings, scale models and installations. The scale models often examine how we approach architecture and the basic elements of living and housing. Energy (warmth, light, water), space and the landscape are studied in less obvious ways and sometimes used in an absurd fashion. The tower is a monumental intervention in the flat polder landscape. It is made of 25-cm long ceramic tubes, with a diameter of 25 cm, like the old sewage pipes. The idea is that this monolith is slowly incorporated in the landscape and the town in spite of or because of its dimension (10 metres tall, with a diameter of 6 metres). The artwork’s name ‘Western’ is a play of words on tower in the west, or an amalgam of Westkapelle and tower or ‘torre’.

30 WINDSOCKS (SINCE 2000)

GRIET DOBBELS (ROESELARE, 1964) G. Dobbels graduated from the Sint-Lucas School of Arts in Ghent with a Master in the visual arts. Two years later, she obtained a Master’s Degree from the Royal College of Art in London. She also lived in Kyoto, Japan for three months as an exchange student. Dobbels designed windsocks for our 9-kilometre long seawall, like the ones you often see at airfields. Instead of sticking to the traditional red and white colour scheme, she has devised original and varying forms and colours. Although the windsocks are made of weatherproof fabrics, they are regularly replaced by a specialised firm, which produces new designs by Dobbels. Location: the installations are in place from the Easter holiday until after the autumn holiday, in 10 locations (3 windsocks per locations) along our seaside resort’s esplanade.

BEACH CASTLE

(2018)

JEAN-FRANÇOIS FOURTOU (FRANCE, 1964) When entering Knokke-Heist by car, you are greeted by a tower created by Jean-François Fourtou as part of the Beaufort exhibition 2018. The formation appears to be haphazard. It looks as if a tremendous gust of wind has lifted the cabins into the air and tossed them down again, stacking them in random order and leaving them there. Fourtou has been fascinated by architecture for many years. In previous works, he has used houses and interiors reminiscent of his childhood. He faithfully recreated them with surrealistic dimensions or turned them upside down. With their distinctive architecture and history, it is not surprising that the beach cabins attracted Fourtou’s attention. Beach cabins are as old as Belgian tourism itself and were originally used as changing rooms for women. Nowadays, the dimensions and shapes are regulated by each coastal community. Most of the cabins you see along the Belgian coast can be seen in Fourtou’s sculpture. His work has been erected in a prominent location in the municipality, giving it the allure of a totem or emblem of this coastal community. Since totems originally represented people from the community, the structure can be considered a monument to beach culture, a symbol of the unity of the beach culture along the entire coastline.
