Dear Neighbour, Your health is our priority. That is why we have introduced a home health care section located at the mall entrance. We now offer Sigvaris compression socks, Airway health supports and an assortment of bathroom safety products among our many items to assist you in your daily needs. One of the more successful products that we carry is the Revitive Circulation Booster. The Circulation Booster has been designed to support and improve blood circulation and reduce swelling and discomfort in the lower legs and feet, which is caused by inactivity or a sedentary lifestyle. Working against gravity, your leg muscles act like a “second heart” to continually pump blood up through your feet and legs back to your heart. When you sit or stand for prolonged periods the feet and leg muscles are inactive and blood flow may reduce significantly and cause swelling. The Circulation Booster uses electrical muscle stimulation to work the muscles in your feet and lower legs to help counteract stasis and maintain healthy legs. Use the Circulation Booster for 30 minutes a day in the comfort of your home and see how it could: 1) Improve leg circulation 2) Reduce swollen feet and ankles 3) Alleviate tired and aching legs. We also offer the Circulation Booster with Isorocker. The Isorocker is designed to gently and involuntarily create ankle joint movement. The device will automatically tilt back and forth as the muscles in your feet and legs relax and contract. We have a display of the Circulation Booster set up in the Pharmacy waiting area and our staff would be more than happy to help show you how the Booster works. Be sure to check out our Home Health Care section when you visit our store to see the Circulation booster and the many more items that we have to offer. And remember, every Thursday is Seniors day at Shoppers Drug Mart where Seniors get 20% off our regularly priced items. We are always looking for ways to make it easier to manage your health, and Live Life Well. Sincerely Mark Leslie Pharmacist/Owner

The Maycourt Club of Brockville was recognized today for all the great work that they do in the community. Local dignitaries including MP Gord Brown and MPP Steve Clark were on hand as Gord Brown presented the Maycourt Club of Brockville with the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award. This is the second year that the award has been handed out. The awards recognize individuals or groups of volunteers, businesses and not-for-profit organizations in five regions across Canada, and include two national awards, one for lifelong achievement and one for new volunteers. The Maycourt Club of Brockville has been contributing to the community for 55 years. It has many volunteers and they donate 100% of all funds that their second hand thrift store earns back to the community. The award that the Maycourt Club was presented with was the Social Innovator (Ontario).

As part of Clara’s Big Ride, Clara Hughes will cover 12,000 km and visit 95 communities along the way. Clara’s Big Ride will help grow awareness, acceptance, and action to create a stigma-free Canada.

About The Maycourt Club The May Court Club of Brockville is a small service organization of about 150 women who are committed to enriching their community by providing financial and volunteer support to individuals and organizations. In so doing, they enhance the lives of members of their community. Funds are raised through the operation of the organization’s Thrift Shop by member volunteers and students, and through regular fundraising events aided by donations from area businesses and individuals to provide this support to those within the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. May Court has made a huge long-term impact by partnering with the City and Brockville Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee, and contributing more than $60,000 towards the acquisition and completion of a barrier-free playground structure and gazebo family leisure area.

Eye On Politics with Leigh Bursey not on the campaign trail for the Leeds and Grenville federal Liberal nomination. Kyle has been heavily involved in previous election campaigns in the area, and recently proposed to his partner Katherine.

“So you’ve decided to run for

When asked why someone of his age would step forward in a strongly Conservative riding like Leeds and Grenville, Kyle was fairly straight-forward with his opinions, when he said “I’m particularly interested in the flight of jobs from the riding. I, like most people, have seen too many friends and family have to leave in search of employment. Bringing jobs back will take hard work, new ideas and an ability to bring various organizations and levels of government together at the same table. I believe I have the skills-set to accomplish this and it’s going to be my main priority as the candidate and as the potential Member of Parliament.”

Brockville has always been known for its willingness to give a young nobody an opportunity to become a lifelong somebody, and that has made us a refreshing destination for a lot of thoughtful political commentary over the last thirty plus years. Our member of Provincial Parliament for Leeds and Grenville, Steve Clark, was a trailblazer for young political minds all over Canada, when he was elected Canada’s youngest mayor at only 22. Our Chamber of Commerce has implemented a Young Professionals program, which nurtures youthful ambition in our local business world, and our local student parliaments and student administrative councils have been involved in some notable local events that have captured their share of headlines. This year alone, we have seen three twenty-somethings join our local municipal election race, each campaigning on a core set of values that encourages more young people to take leadership roles in their communities. This month, I’ve decided to focus on someone else’s efforts though, as sometimes politics is larger than just one city. 28 year old Kyle Johnston has put his name forward to seek the federal Liberal nomination for 2015’s general election. Kyle has been working hard as of late, getting out to community events, working each room, and getting to know the needs of his community members. Born and raised in Brockville, Kyle can be found working in Ottawa for Senator Grant Mitchell, or working on his hobby farm in Spencerville when

Eye on Politics - A Shimmy to the Left Progress is not always achieved overnight. Matter of fact, for those on the left of the political spectrum in Canada, progress has taken ovet fifty years of party in-fighting and rebranding, arguements over nationalism and federalism, and many popular opinion polls that represent a positive respect for political idealism. All of this despite those polls not always translating into voter support. Recently, the late Jack Layton has been a topic of some thought-provoking local conversation, as Jack’s former national campaign director and war room strategist visited Brockville to discuss his new book “Building the Orange Wave” as my guest at the Brockville Public Library. The book (available at Leeds County Books) highlights in great detail that many times in modern history, the status quo has been mistaken for progress, and there is no substitute for hard work. There are no overnight successes in public life, and the book’s author, Brad Lavigne articulated with great substance and humourous detail how Jack and his federal counterparts built a very successful campaign by appealing to everyday Canadians who were tired of the same old politics as usual. In this retrospective, Brad was at some times very critical of his own party’s

Page 6

mistakes, and that only added flavour and honesty to a sometimes dry discussion. Recently, many of Brad’s colleagues at the Broadbent Insititute brought the grander discussion of prosperity to a national stage, at the first annual Progress Summit (the left wing think tank’s answer to the recognizable Manning Institute Networking Conference). With thought-provoking conversations on everything from environmentalism to guaranteed annual incomes, growing financial inquality and feminism, this conference was jam-packed with so much social value that it was hard to keep up. Panelist Gabriel Bran Lopez of non profit organization Youth Fusion, highlighted in a session entitled “A New Deal For Young People” that 52 percent of high school drop outs don’t vote, versus an 84 percent turnout for college and university graduates. A valid arguement could be made that educational deficits in our youth have staggered the progressive movement on the left from dictating the public agenda. On one stage we have Broadbent leadership fellow Alex Himelfarb highlighting in great detail that “a significant amount of our austerity is self induced,” acknowledging that this approach to government actually creates new barriers for entering the labour force, while in another session we have former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard speaking about how misinformation on climate change led many to ignore the problem and pass it off as fear mongering. What is so painfully obvious to me and many others are the answers to our plights. Enhanced political engagement by our most vulnerable populations will lead to structural shifts in policy. No major societal changes were ever accomplished by complacency. As one spectactor eloquently stated from the floor, he has “great difficulties acepting the excuses for youth not voting,” even recognizing and acknowledging systemic issues and misinformation. Progress starts with each of us. If you don’t believe there is an alternative worth voting for, than you have the choice to become one yourself. Separate any party rhetoric from the discussion, and what you have is an ever evolving dialogue on humanity. Jack Layton put it best when he said “there is always hope,” and how “poverty should never be an accepted part of life.” Neither should apathy, but as I said in the beginning, progress doesn’t always happen over night. But how do you make sure he or she will make the right educational choices – and is it better to select a school near home or farther away?

• If your child agrees, select a school near home. The living and travel expenses will be significantly less than if your student lives away from home – and you will be there to provide moral and living support. To help your child make the decision about whether to stay or go, ask them for honest answers questions like these: - Do you feel comfortable looking after yourself – including doing laundry and grocery shopping? - Will you become homesick? - How often will you want to come home and what will it cost? - Do you have the discipline to resist getting overly involved in social life? - Will your new independence enhance your personal growth? - Is there a program offered away from home that you cannot get here? - Perhaps it would be better to obtain you first degree/diploma where you can be sure of support and your second degree/diploma away?

Since Darin was young, he had a passion to not only cook but also for Barbeque. He would watch the Food Network and various Barbeque shows royally, read book upon book on BBQ, and also try out recipes. He decided to take his BBQ passion to the next level. Darin joined 2 major Barbequing associations in Canada and the United States, most commonly known as CSBBQA (Canadian Southern Barbeque Association) and the KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society). Right shortly after that, he “mentored” with the team The Black Pig, from London, ON and from there won the 2011 CSBBQA amateur BBQ series. The Black Pig graciously invited Darin to accompany them to several BBQ competitions where they successfully won several competitions including the “world series of BBQ” at the Jack Daniels World Invitational in Tennessee, the MIM (Memphis in May) and The Pork in The Park in Maryland. Today, you can find Darin competing in BBQ competitions with his family including his spouse Courtney, and his 11 year old daughter, Myia and their young son, Jayden on their family run team River Rat BBQ. He is currently working towards his business “River Rat BBQ” to travel throughout Eastern Ontario for caterings, attend farmer’s markets and also reaching out to communities in need, and doing fundraisers for various organizations. What will his food consist of? Southern BBQ Cuisine. River Rat BBQ provides delicious, southern smoked food, cooked “low and slow” using only the finest freshest ingredients so that all customers are satisfied. River Rat BBQ will target young to middle aged families looking to do private caterings for weddings, parties and family events, to business outings or just simply looking for a nice meal to eat at the park. Private caterers are always in high demand but the young to middle aged families will truly appreciate the southern cooked meals that River Rat BBQ has to offer. Their unique menu will differentiate them from other competitors and will be sought after by this group due to their healthy options, large variety of choices, and especially southern cooking. River Rat BBQ can cater to any party from 10 to 300 people. Food will be catered buffet style and will include both hot and cold meals and a full dessert selection.

Darin Evans has always had a passion to cook. Cooking feels like it’s in his blood and it just comes naturally. He was born and raised in Brockville, Ontario. Darin was a middle child out of 3 brothers. He completed high school in 1996 and attended St. Lawrence College in 2003 where he graduated with a Cook & Chef Apprentice Diploma. Shortly after receiving his diploma, he worked in various local restaurants and hotel kitchens for the next 5 years. In 2006, Darin decided to expand on his knowledge and take it a step further. TAKE TIME TO EXPLORE MOTHERHOOD-- WARTS AND ALL The day to celebrate MOTHERS is fast approaching! Whether you are the mother or the mothered, over a lifetime the idea of “mother” tends to be a complicated one. I know, from raising our five children, that some days the joys of cuddling your precious newborn can be quickly overshadowed by colic and fatigue and the pride at seeing your child off to their first year of university can be, almost, forgotten in the midst of an outburst of their teenaged moodiness. Among the following titles you will find tips for dealing with some of those trying situations; fictional relationships that may give you a different perspective; books to share with your young children and some that are simply good reads. PHILOMENA by Martin Sixsmith, tells the true, heartbreaking story of a young, Irish Catholic girl who finds herself pregnant and unmarried in 1952. Forced to live at a convent, out of the public eye, Philomena was allowed to raise her son for three years. At this time he was taken from her and given to an American couple in exchange for a “generous donation”. This story recounts how, over the next 50 years, a mother refused to forget her son. (Also available on DVD.) IN MY MOTHER’S KITCHEN BY Trish Magwood, is a wonderful and varied collection of recipes gleaned, over the years, from friends and family. Virtually every page presents a hint or variation making it easy to adapt recipes to ingredients on hand, accommodate tastes or ensure success with a new technique. Whether you are a novice in the kitchen or a seasoned pro you are sure to find inspiration in this book! ( Mock Butter Chicken is on our menu tomorrow night!)

Page 12

Any mother reading SAVE ME by Lisa Scottoline will ponder the moral dilemma of being responsible for a group of children in a life-threatening situation. The problems arise when one of those children is your own and another one who frequently bullies your child. As the title suggests, INCONTINENT ON THE CONTINENT: My Mother, Her Walker, and Our Grand Tour of Italy by Jane Christmas, is a frequently amusing tale. In an attempt to resolve many years of mother-daughter conflict, the author decides to take her elderly mother on a month long journey. As you can imagine, all is not blissful and Jane frankly shares her insights and criticism of herself and others. (This book is available as an electronic download or by Interlibrary Loan.) SECRET DAUGHTER by Shilpi Somaya STATE OF WONDER by Ann Patchett BOSSYPANTS by Tina Fey LOVE YOU FOREVER by Robert Munsch TRAVELLING WITH POMEGRANATES by Sue Monk Kidd THE WINTER PEOPLE by Jennifer McMahon ROAD MAP TO HOLLAND BY Jennifer Graf Groneberg WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING by Heidi Murkoff. These titles are all available at the Brockville Public Library. HAPPY READING! BROCKVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY WRITTEN BY: KATHY COLWELL

LIFE ON THE REFRIGERATOR DOOR by Alice Kuipers gives the reader an in depth look at the relationship between a mother and her daughter who rarely spend time together but communicate mainly through notes. As they are forced to deal with a crisis in their lives, the notes between the two shift from the mundane to much more meaningful and poignant. A moving story.
