What Is Retinol?

This is one of my most asked questions about anti – ageing ingredients. Retinol is the #1 dermatologist-recommended agefighting ingredient. A derivative of vitamin A, retinol reduces the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles to improve the look of collagen-depleted skin and helps with cell renewal. RoC® skincare has been developing innovative antiaging formulas for over 50 years and was the first to patent a retinol formula in the U.S. The RoC® brand continues its dedication to providing expert skincare with advanced moisturizers, serums and treatments to help diminish visible signs of aging, so women can be their most beautiful every day As you age, your skin’s ability to renew itself gradually slows down. Skin loses its elasticity and wrinkles become more evident. RoC®Retinol formula works deep within the skin’s surface to reduce the visible signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol A also helps to even out skin tones from sun damage. This said Retinol A can also make you more photo sensitive so you must wear a good sunscreen. FROM OUR PUBLISHER

Welcome to the August edition of YOUR KnowBrockville, Brockville’s only locally owned newspaper! This month KnowBrockville had the opportunity to celebrate our 2nd anniversary and we want to thank the 300 plus readers that showed up for our anniversary party. We wouldalso ike to send a hhuge THANK YOU to Troy and the entire team at Eastside Mario’s Brockville first for allowing us to use their parking lot, second for helping out and third for being our great friends. If you have a chance to visit Eastside Mario’s please help us show our appreciation to Troy and his staff. In an industry it is hard for businesses to survive and this is no more true than in the media industry. The media market in the Brockville has multiple players which makes the road a little more bumpier but we would like to thank our readers who pick up our newspapers each and every month and our great advertisers that support our great 100% locally owned and operated newspaper. We are proud to be 100% locally owned. What does it mean to be locally owned, it means that you employ locally, 100% of your revenues stay in the local economy and you spend these revenues in our city and we are proud to state we do all of these. So no matter who says they are locally owned we all must question them if they do not employ all of their employees locally. For Brockville to have a surviving and vibrant economy we must support our locally owned businesses first. Tim Sharpe Owner/Publisher contact@knowbrockville.com (613)803-08222

Each time our community loses a young person to tragedy, all of us suffer. We miss out on his contributions to his community, the indelible impact that his life would have continued to have on those around him. And in this case, his artwork also. Jesse Major was a gifted songwriter, and a veteran hip hop performer, with high ambitions. I shared the stage with him more times than I can count, and was always impressed by his wit, his courage, and his natural abilities to tell a story. His warm personality, thoughtful commentary, and insatiable desire to provide a better life for his daughter make this tragedy monumental, even if it isn’t a rare occurrence in our community anymore. We have lost too many young lives in this community, and each time we do, a piece of our city bleeds out, leaving holes and damage to the arteries that make this place vibrant. Jesse, a.k.a. Natural Selection (his hip hop stage name) faced down roadblocks, demons, and challenges every day, and what makes this circumstance so heart-breaking is that had Nat Select been able to break the glass ceiling as an independent, budding musician, many of the challenges he faced could have been more easily mitigated. Everyone is famous in a small town, and his humorous musical bars of subtle discretion are what I will remember most of all. As we mourn this loss like so many others in our city, let`s also vow to honour these memories for the light that they offered, and do our best to showcase that light any way we can, including encouraging more of our youth to follow their dreams. Jesse was a proud ambassador of the 613 area-code, and a talent unparalleled by many of his colleagues. Jesse was not always the number one local face for hip hop, but when he was on mark and onstage, he was untouchable. On Friday, August 29th, join Concrete Angel Promotions and Motormouth Entertainment as we pay tribute to Jesse at a special Natural Selection Tribute Concert, taking place at the Brockville Memorial Centre between 6pm and 11pm. Donations will be collected at the door, and throughout the evening. All money raised will benefit his daughter Jada, and will be put towards an education fund. Jesse was my friend. Despite any obstacles or shortcomings, he is and always will be irreplaceable, and is just one more gigantic example of talent worth celebrating.

SMALL BUSINESS FEATURE - CAPTAIN GEORGE’S

Today we have many choices for dining and many different cuisines; one of my favorite meals when I eat out is fish and chips. Now there are many different versions of fish and each restaurant you visit has their own version. As a true fish and chip connoisseur I know good fish and chips and my selection in Brockville is a new restaurant that just opened. Captain George’s Fish & Chips located at 241 Park Street (Inside Cowan’s Dairy building) serves up original English style fish & chips and take my word for it when I say they are to die for! Recently, I had the opportunity to meet George the founder of Captain George’s and he told me some of his story. George talked about serving on the cruise ship Laconia during World War 2. The Laconia was carrying some 2,732 crew, passengers, soldiers and POWs, was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-156 off the coast of West Africa. George was one of the survivors however, there were 115 individuals lost in the sinking. George recalled eating true Fish & Chips in Britain and he knew he wanted to bring this great fish & chip taste to Canada.

So in 1991 the first Captain George’s opened in Oshawa. Captain George’s currently has 26 locations throughout Ontario including the newest opened in Brockville opened in Brockville by owners, Surinder and Kuljit Gill. Captain George’s specializes in authentic English style fish & chips, including: halibut, cod, and haddock. You can also have your fish grilled if that’s how you prefer it. In addition to their award winning fish & chips, they also offer a wide variety of freshly prepared items such as hamburgers made from a special beef grind by the Cutting Edge Meat Shop, souvlaki, gyros, soups, salads, shrimp, clams, scallops and more. Captain George’s prides itself on providing the absolute best value and quality of food and service. As a local small business owner I like to support our advertisers and we had the chance to eat at Captain George’s and it was delicious. The restaurant opens daily at 11am which makes it great to grab your lunch and you will not be disappointed.
