Brockville Farmers’ Market Celebrates 180th Anniversary The Brockville Farmers’ Market invites you to the market on Saturday, August 24th for their 180 Year Celebration for the Brockville Farmers Market

The Brockville Farmers’ Market would like to extend an invitation to their customers and the citizens of Brockville and area to celebrate their 180th Anniversary. Join the vendors on Saturday, August 24 at 11:00 am to help celebrate. Even after 180 Years, the Brockville Farmers Market remains a central part of the Downtown Brockville community. They are also one of the oldest markets in Ontario. This year, the market is stronger than ever with over 60 vendors taking up all of Market St. W. and the adjacent sidewalk to offer you fresh local produce and high quality products. They flourish thanks to the commitment of the producers, many of whom have been a part of the Market for decades. There are also some who have just joined them this year. Everything that is offered is homegrown, homemade or handcrafted by the vendors themselves. The Farmers’ Market says “thank you” for your patronage and hope that you will come celebrate with them. The vendors will be serving free sweet corn from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with a special presentation at 11:00 am. A number of City officials will be in attendance along with Lawrence Levere the Town Crier, to cut a very special cake prepared by our own bakers. This is a celebration that you don’t want to miss!

I recently received an email from a competitor stating that they were closing their business, and although they were a competitor I never like seeing a business close. I know that for some business owners it is tough to say enough is enough, however there comes a time when there is no other choice. See I am a reasonable person and I wish all media businesses to cooperate with each other to make our businesses stronger rather than create battle plans to destroy one another. Our fine city benefits greatly when a business is a success and especially if that business is 100% locally owned like mine which means all revenues stay in our city.

Photographer Don Corneill

So although they were a competitor it is a loss for the City of Brockville. I wish all business owners great success even the media businesses that are similar to mine.

Fall is coming...so here are six back to school skin care tips for teens and parents. Put your best face forward when you start the new school year! Skin Care Tips for Teens 1. If you’ve neglected your skin all summer and you want to be looking your best for the first day of school, start today! Changes to the skin don’t happen overnight, no matter what the advertisers tell you. 2. Make sure to use a cleanser that both cleanses and exfoliates without stripping or irritating the skin. If you’re not allergic, cleansers containing alpha-hydroxy acids or fruit enzymes are the best for exfoliation. (Products with rough granules are not appropriate for anyone’s face.) Why exfoliate? Hormonal fluctuations and rapid cell turnover cause dead skin cells to accumulate on the skin, trapping dirt and bacteria. You need to gently remove this layer to ensure the brightest, healthiest skin possible. 3. Try to stay away from products that contain harmful and irritating chemicals, such as formaldehyde & alcohol. For girls, this includes your makeup. A good mineral makeup that does not contain fillers, parabens, or fragrance is the best. Plus, there are great skincare products out there that don’t contain harmful chemicals, so why buy the ones that do? 4. DO use products that contain skin-strengthening antioxidants like vitamin c, grapeseed extracts, vitamin e and more. Many people consider these to be anti-aging, but they are also useful for sensitive teenage skin that needs an extra boost due to stress and environmental factors. 5. If you suffer from persistent acne, over-washing and using strong chemicals on your skin will probably do more harm than good. Irritating acne-prone skin just promotes an environment that allows bacteria to enter into the pore, starting the cycle all over again. Make sure your anti-acne regimen includes products that calm, soothe and moisturize as well as treat! 6. If you’re unsure about what’s best for your or your teen’s skin, come on by and see us at Sears Brocville. All teens receive back-to-school skin care tips, including a FREE consultation about what’s right for them!! Please Note: Opinions expressed in Beauty Basics are that only opinions and should never be considered advice to use or purchase a product. If a reader chooses to use a product mentioned in Beauty Basics and there are side effects, Sears Canada, Sears Brockville, Stepheny Rocks, KnowBrockville and Just One Man Media cannot be held liable for these side effects.

Summer Fitness Summer is almost over but that doesn’t mean that doing your workouts outside is over. Here is a work out you can do outdoors or even indoors without any equipment, all you need is your own body weight. Start with a 5 minute warm up of walking and or dynamic stretching. After your warm up the workout begins. Jog on the spot for 1 minute Plank for 1 minute 20 jumping jacks high knees for 1 minute Kick butts on the spot for 1 minute 20 push ups 10 burpees 15 lying leg lowers 20 lying hip thrusts 1 minute of squats nice and low 20 walking lunges 10 push ups 1 minute skipping rope (or pretending) then a 5 minute jog to cool down Doesn’t seem like much but you will for sure get your heart rate up, burn some calories and build some lean muscle with your own body weight, for free in the comfort of your own home, back yard or anywhere. For an extra challenge complete this circuit 2-3 times. Make sure to stay well hydrated and take water breaks when you need them! Safety first! If you are not sure of your form with exercises always look it up first to prevent injury.

Your growing belly, Your newborn’s tiny toes, your toddler’s silly smile, your child’s toothless grin, Your moments as a family... these are moments you’ll want to remember forever. I pride myself in capturing what it is you see when you look at your child - their quirks, their little personalities and their tiny toes curled up. One day, when they are all grown up, you’ll want to remember how small they were and what your family looked like when you were all first getting to know each other. It’s a beautiful and wonderful time and I am thrilled to document it and tell your story. My approach will capture your family as they are today so they can be treasured for generations to come. Heartbeats & Beyond Photography specializes in Maternity, Newborn, Infant and Baby Portraiture as well as Birth photography in the Leeds Grenville area. Who is HeartBeats & Beyond Photography? Loving, Emotional, Nurturing, Artistic those are the words that I think best describe me. My name is Lisa. I am mom to four amazing and beautiful children. I feel that pregnancy, childbirth and the newborn period are all very sacred. I love the idea of capturing the joy, the introspection, the serenity and the love that surround them. I endeavor to do this artistically and beautifully, and am overjoyed to have the privilege of capturing the memories of this period for families. I enjoy all types of photography, but creating newborn, birth and maternity photos is what I am most passionate about! I feel so honored to participate in capturing those precious and fleeting newborn moments in timeless style and uniqueness. I want to capture these moments in a way that they stand out forever. On top of that, consider me a student of photography. I practice my art every day. I consider myself a completely self-taught photographer, who believes that whatever strengths I may have achieved in my skill, there will always be room to grow and learn to be better. I don’t limit myself to shooting in a studio, (which is located in my Brockville home) but enjoy taking it outdoors as well. I love the interaction with my clients, and capturing what inspires them. Here is few recent feedbacks from clients: We have just received our maternity picture back from Lisa, and I couldn’t be any more impressed with the amazing job she did! From keeping me posted on my pictures to the warm heartfelt welcome when we arrived in her home. It was overall definitely a great experience. && we can’t wait for our wee one to get here to do it all over again:) Lisa thank you for the wonderful photos you have taken of my daughter. I will cherish these pictures forever. You have such a talent and take so much care when capturing her. I feel at ease and always excited to look at your photographs. Thank you. Opened in 2009 and based in Brockville General Hospital, the BCP is free for patients referred to the program and offers six- and twelve-week programs designed to assist with the post-operative journey to full recovery. There was a total of $980 raised for I Am Alive Dog Rescue. I Am Alive Dog Rescue is a no kill rescue that rescues dogs for situations of abuse and many times saving dogs from high kill pounds, and puppy mills. As a last resort we can take in owner surrenders IF an appropriate foster home can be found. We are a foster-based rescue. We rely mainly on the generosity of the public to help us by fostering dogs until their adoptive family is found.

Brockville Community Changer - Sam Crosby Sam Crosby is a community changer par excellence. When not working full time at Thousand Islands Secondary School or dancing or teaching at Bread of Life Dance Theatre (BOLDT), where she is the founder and artistic director, Sam is always actively involved in trying to make Brockville an ever better place for all its citizens. Most recently, Sam was an integral part of the Brockville Pride week committee. As part of the committee, she organized both an open mic night and the city-wide flash mob and walked in the Pride parade as one its Grand Marshals. Anyone who had the opportunity to watch the Flash Mob at the Thousand Islands Mall would know just how infectious Sam’s enthusiasm for both dance and our city youth, truly is. At Thousand Islands Secondary School, Sam is an advisor for the TISS Queer Ally Alliance and Student Council. She has also helped to spearhead campaigns that raise awareness about mental illness, bullying, equity and inclusion, and violence against women, to name but a few of the campaigns she has been involved in. Sam’s commitment to raise awareness about issues important to our community was distinctly evident in the fundraiser she organized for Leeds and Grenville Interval House in February. Sam brought together a fabulous group of performers for a night of fantastic entertainment. If that was not enough, Sam awarded each one of the presenters with a medallion encouraging each and every one of them to celebrate and enjoy their individual life journeys. Sam Crosby is a breath of fresh air and a dynamic citizen whose smile and enthusiasm touches and changes lives. Thank you Sam Crosby for all you do!!! HAPPY, HAPPY TAILS - RIP AND BILL RIP( RIPPER) WAS LEFT IN A SHELTER BY HIS OWNERS. HE WAS BROUGHT TO US TO FIND HIS NEW HOME AND GET A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE. HE DID NOT HAVE TO WAIT VERY LONG. BILL FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS BOY AND SO DID RIP... FALL IN LOVE WITH BILL WHEN THEY MET FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT IS AMAZING TO SEE HOW MAN AND A DOG HAVE THIS SPECIAL CONECTION AT FISRT SIGHT. HERE IS MESSAGE FROM Bill Lindy, RIP’S DAD. Bill Lindy I adopted Rip the first week of July 2012. I fully intended introducing him to Disc dog play but thought it would be a few days as I was going to allow him time to settle in with my 3 other rescues and myself. Rip had other ideas. After about 3 hours and his second tour of the yard he found a disc at brought it over to me to throw. We started off with a few rollers and then about 10 days later Rip played in his first tournament in Barrie. He had 2 fourth place finishes in Advanced toss and fetch and 2 second place finishes in extreme distance. Jump up only 2 weeks and now he has learned a few trick catches and moves so it is off to Ottawa where we put our new moves into our very first freestyle trial and win a first place finish in Novice and a first in Pro toss and fetch. Rip is not going to settle for disc alone and has already tried his paw at dock diving. There are many other dog sports that we will check out as well and who knows where we will end up. I knew from the first time I saw his pictures on the I Am Alive Dog Rescue page he was a very special dog and would make a great friend to some lucky person. I am very thankful to the I Am Alive group for saving this boy and for allowing me the opportunity to have him join my family of rescues. Rip now has a home with Chevy, Cord, Cutter and myself for a very long time. Thanks again to all involved in saving Rip and all the other dogs as well as finding them new homes to live out their new lives. Regards Bill

Off to college – get the most from that RESP

It’s just around the corner – the big day when your child or grandchild heads off to college or university for year one of their next great educational adventure. You’ve prudently planned for this day by regularly contributing to investments held within a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) – and now it’s time to get the most out of it with the right withdrawal strategies that will minimize your student’s taxes and get the full benefit of the Educational Assistance Payments (EAPs) for qualifying educational programs. EAPs consist of the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) and the income or growth earned from the money you’ve invested in the RESP. Withdraw EAPs before withdrawing contributions. As the subscriber of your student’s plan, you can elect to withdraw the income, grant, and bonds as EAPs, which will be taxable in the hands of your student whose low income, and personal credits and deductions (including the tuition credit, education credit, moving expenses deduction, and so on) should offset some or all of the income inclusion of the EAP. Withdraw contributions after your student starts school. Early withdrawal will trigger a CESG repayment. Spread out the EAPs over the length of your student’s educational program. Taking a lump sum in the first year may burden your student with a high taxable income. Spreading out the EAPs over a number of years takes advantage of your student’s (usually) lower marginal tax rates. Avoid potential CESG clawbacks by withdrawing EAPs when you can. If there is any CESG or CLB remaining in your investments held within a RESP after your student completes(or leaves) their post-secondary program, you may be required to refund this “excess” CESG grant money. Get proof of enrolment right away so you’ll have money when you need it. Before releasing an EAP, your RESP carrier will require proof of enrollment. Use leftovers wisely. Any contributions remaining in the plan after your student finishes college or university are yours to use as you wish – transfer them to another child’s plan or withdraw them for personal use. When you started that RESP many years ago, you probably wondered if it was a good investment strategy. Now you know that it was – especially today, with a post-secondary education so costly and so necessary. Talk to your professional advisor about other good strategies for achieving a debt-free education for your children or grandchildren and financial stability for your family. The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) and the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) are provided by the Government of Canada. CLB eligibility depends on family income levels. Some provinces make education savings grants available to their residents. This column, written and published by Investors Group Financial Services Inc.
