The Life of A Small Business Owner Hello and welcome to the June edition of Brockville’s only 100% locally owned newspaper. Since launching KnowBrockville on May 1, 2012 I have seen my small business grow. First it was the huge response we have had on our Facebook page and now it is the great comments and response we are receiving after launching in full newspaper format! There are some downs about owning your own business but for me personally, these few downs are always erased by the many good things that come each day by owning my own business. Whether it is helping to support or highlight a community group, or featuring a local small business, these are the gratifying factors to owning your own business. This season myself and KnowBrockville have had the proud honor to partner with the Brockville Farmers’ Market. I am proud to highlight and partner with a fine group of local producers and craft vendors and help promote Buying Local as Buying Local is best and helps the local producers supply us with locally produced products!

Recently I had the great pleasure of taking a short vacation. We rented a car and traveled for five days throughout Southern Ontario. And by the way if you are looking for a rental car, Enterprise includes unlimited kilometers if you stay in the same province. Before the vacation I have been debating to expand into other cities and had the opportunity to meet a young girl in Brantford, Ontario, Now we are planning to publish a monthly newspaper in Brantford launching on July 2nd, and Jennifer Bell from Brantford is our local representative. These are exciting and stressful times with an planned expansion but I know it will be rewarding. So what are you up to this summer? Leeds/Grenville: A good reason to smile-the “Show You Care - Bid on a Chair” fundraiser for the Brockville Cardiovascular Program (BCP) held May 30th at Maplehurst Manor in Maitland raised over $58,000 in support. The 27 Adirondack chairs put up for bids were locally crafted, individually decorated by local artists, and sponsored by businesses in this community. As part of the total funds raised, the chair auction brought in $16,800. Motor Coils Manufacturing Ltd. also generously supported this event by donating $10,000. The event was fully community-supported through participation of the volunteer committee, local restaurants and breweries, volunteer assistants and-of course-the bidders! All funds raised will support the BCP based at Brockville General Hospital-a program that offers former cardiac and vascular patients information, support and guided exercise programs while transitioning into their post-treatment lives. The program is locally created and supported, receiving no government funding. The kids love this frozen treat option and they love to get involved in making their very own. We knew there had to – Dipped in vanilla yoghurt sprinkled with rolled be a better alternative to beat the summer heat. oats As I thought back on my childhood, I remembered one of my favourite treats growing up - I was in love with frozen bananas. Actually, that was the only way my parents could get me to eat bananas and still to this day I can only manage to eat them in frozen form. Then it dawned on me: frozen bananas are the perfect alternative to sugary frozen treats. Bananas are a great source of fibre, low in calories, and offer a boost of energy. There were no excuses why we could not provide this alternative to our children as you just peel a banana, stick it on a Popscile stick and throw them in the freezer. We soon started experimenting with different combinations and realized we could dress them up for those days that called for a special treat.
As a mother of two and a daycare provider, I know how hard it can be to find nutritious snacks that are quick and easy to make. This frozen treat has been a winner not only for the kids but adults love them too. Developmental Services of Leeds and Grenville held their 4th Annual Plant & Pottery Sale on June 1st at Hilltop Studio. They also had unique pieces of pottery on sale as well. The majority of the plants were grown and donated by staff members and pottery pieces were created by Krista Cameron. The 1000 Islands Top Deli held a soft Grand Opening on June 5th. The Deli has a great selection of sandwiches, wraps, burgers, daily hot lunch specials and even a breakfast menu. The Deli is located in the food court of the 1000 Islands Mall. Public Information Part of BGH Palliative Care Week Brockville: As part of events marking National Hospice Palliative Care Week at Brockville General Hospital (BGH), the Brockville and District Hospice Palliative Care Service hosted a public information display at the Charles Street Site. The Brockville and District Hospice Palliative Care Service (BDHPCS), based at the BGH Garden Street Site, is a community-based hospice palliative care support service for patients and families dealing with life-limiting illness. The service is a pioneer in the field, started over 30 years ago with the former St. Vincent de Paul Hospital. BGH Hosts Ontario Bioethics Research Chair for AGM June 17 Brockville General Hospital (BGH) will host Udo Schuklenk, PhD, the Ontario Research Chair for Bioethics as the guest speaker for the hospital’s 128th Annual General Meeting June 17th. Schuklenk will present “Why Canada Should Decriminalize Assisted Suicide and Voluntary Euthanasia.” Dr. Schuklenk is Professor of Philosophy at Queen’s University in Kingston, and joined Queen’s as the Ontario Research Chair in Bioethics and Public Policy in 2007. He held academic appointments in Australia, England, South Africa and Scotland prior to coming to Canada, and still holds an honorary professorship in bioethics, health and human rights at Witwatersrand University in South Africa. Schuklenk is an author or editor of six books, and over 160 journal articles and book chapters. He also edits a major international bioethics journal, Bioethics, the official publication of the International Association of Bioethics. On behalf of the Royal Society of Canada, Dr. Schuklenk chaired an international expert panel drafting a report on end-oflife decision-making in Canada which was released in late 2011.

Get the bikes out and bike down the water front trails, they are gorgeous and go all along the water front and through town. The best thing about all this fun outdoor activity is having a delicious nutritious picnics with the family and friends. It’s easy to grab no prep foods that are healthy not junk. Some great ideas for snacks for on the go are hummus and fresh cut veggies, fruit of all kinds, cubed light cheese, all natural sliced meat to wrap the cheese makes a great little wrap. You can bring premixed salads and dressing, air popped plain popcorn, yogurt and the list goes on and on. Don’t forget the most important WATER so everyone stays hydrated and feeling great. Clinton, NJ (May 16, 2013) – Sisters Under Sail, a non-profit organization that runs leadership programs for teen girls aboard a tall ship, will be sailing into Brockville with 5 teenage daughters of military families on June 15th for the Tall Ships Brockville festivities. Coming from military stations across the continent – including the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, New York, Wisconsin and Colorado – these teens represent 5 branches of the North American military: Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, United States Marine Corps and United States Army. 12 military teens in total will sail – under full scholarship – for two weeks each aboard the Unicorn, while the ship travels throughout the Great Lakes, participating in events commemorating the War of 1812 this summer. Sisters Under Sail is doing her part by raising the scholarship funds to honor the strength of these courageous teens as well as their shared experiences across national borders. Sisters Under Sail is the only sail training organization to specifically target teen daughters from Canadian and United States military families for leadership development. After Brockville, the teens will sail onto Toronto for another tall ship festival celebration. “Sisters Under Sail is an exemplary program for young women at a formative time in the lives. It is a unique experience that builds character and confidence through teamwork and skills learning,” says Krista Slack, Co-Producer, Redpath Waterfront Festival Toronto, about the initiative. “I applaud the organization for recognizing the special contribution that our military families make to our countries by giving back to their daughters. Since inception, Sisters Under Sail has put aboard over 500 teenage girls and 300 women, and 62% of those teenage girls have shipped aboard the Unicorn via sponsorship dollars. The Unicorn is Sisters Under Sail’s “experiential learning lab” for her leadership programming. The pilot program for Daughters of Military Families was launched from West Point, NY in 2012. 16 teen girls from the United States participated in the scholarship-funded program last summer. This summer, 12 more are slated to participate, including 4 girls from Canada. There are teens whose mothers or fathers deploy year after year to serve and protect the freedom of the United States and Canada. There are teens who have spent their childhoods moving across the country – or across the world – to make it in a new place, at a new school, in support of their family’s military responsibility. These teens, like their parents, are courageous. They are resilient, committed and proud. Brockville is filled with many talented people and Sam Crosby’s Bread of Life Dance Theatre (BOLDT) team members are many of these talented people. I was graced with the pleasure of speaking to one of Sam’s many talented dancers. Liam Kendel recently competed in a number of dance competitions including the Shine Dance competition that was recently held in Kingston as well as the Believe Dance competition that was recently held at the Brockville Arts Centre. At the Shine Dance competition Liam placed second in the solo dance category and event won the title “Mr. Shine Dance”. Another award that Liam was proud of was a special award for Crazy Content. You may ask what is “crazy content”? Crazy Content is a dancers ability to use as many elements as they can fit into one dance. Liam is also proud of the fact that he has won partial scholarships to two programs. The first program is a week long program at the National Ballet School in Toronto. Liam auditioned for this program in Montreal and was one of a select few chosen for the week long program. Liam has also won a partial scholarship to a Be Discovered Winter Intensive program in New York City, unfortunately Liam mother states he will not be attending this one, but Liam is attending the program at the National Ballet School in Toronto. After talking with Liam I can tell he puts a lot of pride and honor in what he does as well as his accomplishments. I know Liam spends hours practicing and fine tuning his routines, dedication is the secret to Liam’s early success. For anyone that has not witnessed the talent of any of the BOLDT Dancers, it is no wonder that Liam is such a success early in his life. I guarantee that with his dedication and hard work that there is a great future in dance for Liam. Although Liam is dedicated to training and hard work, behind any great dancer is a great instructor. Sam Crosby is a great and motivational instructor for any of her class participants. Sam’s mission is to provide excellence in dance and performance training, preparing future dancers for the “real world” of dance performance with high quality, cutting-edge programming and enriching workshops with some of the industry’s finest instructors, while providing a means to instill a “give back” to various organizations in the Brockville and surrounding community. BOLDT offers a variety of dance genres including Ballet, Tap, Pointe Ballet, Modern Technique, Musical Theatre, Jazz Technique, Hip Hop and even Middle Eastern Dance. We create jewellery for wedding parties and work with the customer to establish a design that is perfect for them. We go out of our way to visit our many suppliers to find flawless colour, style, size and design to create something beyond their expectations.

A family doctor or speech-language pathologist should be contacted if a child is not reaching some of the milestones at or below their age.
