From Our Editor Welcome to the March edition of KnowBrockville. Well we are turning the corner headed for spring and if you are anything like me I cannot wait for spring. Nothing beats the fresh smells of spring and even though I have asthma and these spring smells can be harsh on me I still love them. With the arrival of spring it will mean more events will be happening in and around the Brockville area. This year KnowBrockville will have more photographers out there covering the events that will be happening in our great city. In this issue we have covered the 30 Hour Telethon Palliative Care, what an amazing community fundraising event raising a record amount over $260,000 this year. The hard work of the volunteers and the organizers certainly paid off! Recent I was approached by our newest contributor Jennifer Harvey asking if we would be interested in having her submit a regular article and of course I said yes. Jennifer Harvey has been in the floral industry for 12 years, Jennifer has actually been invited to speak at the Canada Bloom how in Toronto which is amazing and I am so proud to have her join the KnowBrockville team. Until next month please get out and enjoy our great city as much as you can this month. Hope you all have a great March and thanks for supporting my locally owned business as you do. May Court Supports MacLean Maternal Child Unit

Admiring the new sleepers are (l – r) May Court members Lynn Hanley (Communications), Margaret Lauridsen (President), BGVA volunteer Carole Crump, MacLean Unit Director Jennifer Torode, BGVA President David Bessant, and BGH Registered Nurse Stacey Feig. The MacLean Maternal Child Unit at Brockville General Hospital (BGH) recently received a large donation of infant sleepers from the May Court Club of Brockville. “We collected 85 sleeper sets in a donation drive from before Christmas and into January of this year,” explains Margaret Lauridsen, President of the May Court Club. “We donated sleepers last year as well, and the hospital used them all. We felt this was a worthy cause to support again this year.” The sleepers will be included in the “We Care” baskets created by the Brockville General Volunteer Association (BGVA). These baskets go to young families in need who have given birth at BGH.

“We have been very appreciative of our partnership with the May Court Club and their generosity in supporting the infant sleeper drive two years running,” says Jennifer Torode, Director of the McLean Maternal-Child Unit at BGH. “It has given us the opportunity to be a conduit for giving back to our community to some of the most needy and vulnerable population out there. Together we are doing great work!” she adds. (Submitted)

St. Lawrence College receives major gift from RBC Foundation to support new academic programs. RBC Foundation is investing $50,000 through the Difference We Make campaign at St. Lawrence College. The gift will advance the college’s efforts to support the growing supply chain and logistics sector in the region. RBC Royal Bank presented the gift during a special reception for leaders of the supply chain sector held at the College on Tuesday, February 18. “RBC believes strongly in the education of Canada’s next generation of entreprenurial business leaders, and our donation today is a real testament to our confidence in the new Centre for Supply Chain Studies and their innovative program that nurtures, develops and accelerates the careers of students in Eastern Ontario,” said Johanne Delves, regional vice president, Eastern Ontario, RBC. “This support further underscores not only the bank’s focus on helping our kids reach their true potential in life, but RBC’s ongoing comittment to this community.” Among the many initiatives the College has undertaken is a new Supply Chain and Logistics Management one-year graduate certificate program. This program was created in response to the needs of employers in the supply chain sector, warehousing and distribution, transportation or the manufacturing/retail areas. Cornwall has become a major centre for the distribution of goods and materials across Canada with several companies establishing regional distribution centres in the city, according to Glenn Vollebregt, President and CEO of St. Lawrence College. “This significant gift will help the College grow the academic programs and services we are developing and will provide employers in our communities with much needed skilled professionals in order to build the strength of the region, something we’re known to do in all sectors of the economy.”

Aquala Day Spa “Heart Happy” Baskets Raise over $1200 for Brockville Cardio Program New “Heart Happy” gift baskets sold over the Christmas season by the Aquala Day Spa have raised $1285.00 in support of the Brockville Cardiovascular Program (BCP). “We got the idea last November,” says Sabby Duthie, owner of the Wedgewood Retirement Resort where the Aquala Day Spa is located. “We wanted to promote heart health to our clients as it is so important, while raising funds and awareness for the BCP. Our community is lucky to have this healthcare service right here in Brockville.” The BCP is a local rehabilitation service for people recovering from cardiac surgery, cardiac angioplasty or stenting. Opened in 2009 and based in Brockville General Hospital, the BCP is free for patients referred to the program and offers six- and twelveweek programs designed to assist with the post-operative journey to full recovery. The program has served over 400 graduates to date. The BCP receives no government funding, and is entirely supported by generous individuals, groups, and businesses such as the Aquala Day Spa. Based on the original volunteer program for teens that ran from 1990 to 2005, the new Volunteen program will give area youth the chance to volunteer in many areas within the hospital, allowing them to experience the working hospital setting first hand. The Volunteen program is once again hosted by the Brockville General Volunteer Association (BGVA) in partnership with St. Lawrence College’s Child and Youth Worker program. “Brockville General Hospital and our Volunteer Association have many learning experiences to offer the youth of our community who are interested in the various aspects of healthcare,” says Cheryl Marshall, Manager of Volunteers for the BGVA. “We look forward to working with the young people of the community, ages 13 to 18, which will bring a new vitality and younger component to our Volunteer Association.”

Be a Volunteen and make a difference! The BGVA marks 125 years of service to Brockville General Hospital and the community in 2014.

PDCI Blue Devils Burn BCI to Take Upper Canada Cup Junior Girls Volleyball Championships It was an impressive, undefeated repeat. The Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI) Blue Devils were the victors for the second year in a row Thursday at the Upper Canada Cup Junior Girls Volleyball Championships, defeating the Brockville Collegiate Institute Red Rams in straight sets. Led by the power hitting of Mikaela Congreves, Alex Roberts and Abigail Brandon, the Devils handed the Red Rams a convincing 25-16, 25-19 defeat during the tournament final, held at Tagwi Secondary School. “They’re my three big hitters,” said Coach Leanne Watt of the trio. “They really attacked the net. The other teams just didn’t have an answer for their power.” Watt said her team gelled on the court, overwhelming their opponents as they went undefeated throughout the tournament. “They came together as a unit and communicated very well on the court and they never gave up on a ball.” The team got to the final by defeating the Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) Pirates 25-20 and 25-10 in semifinal action. The Devils also bested TISS in their first match of the tournament, before defeating Seaway District High School to qualify for the semis. In senior action February 25, Seaway District High School took the Upper Canada Cup Senior Girls Volleyball Championships after defeating Russell High School during tournament play at Gananoque Secondary School. The Upper Canada Cup Championships are special athletic events organized by the Upper Can-

ada District School Board to give its students greater athletic opportunities. This year Upper Canada Cup junior and senior events were held in boys and girls basketball and volleyball.

TISS Edges Out BCI for Upper Canada Cup Jr. Boys Basketball Title It was a Brockville rivalry on the hard court Thursday afternoon as the Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) Pirates edged out the Brockville Collegiate Institute (BCI) Red Rams to take the 2nd annual Upper Canada Cup Junior Boys Basketball Championships at North Grenville District High School. The TISS team battled back from a seven-point deficit at halftime to take the game 41-38, after BCI forward Jack Wilson missed a three-pointer two seconds before the buzzer that could have tied the game. For TISS, it was a particularly sweet victory, said Head Coach Jason Crotty. “We’ve been in four tournaments this year and even though we’ve made the finals we haven’t been able to pull it (a championship) off,” said Crotty. “It was nice to be able to pull one out and get one against a good team.” A key difference in the game was the play of centres Austin Allingham, A.J. Barton, and Lucas Morrison who played great both offensively and defensively to contain BCI stars such as point guard Jackson Bayles and centre Cole Wallace. The TISS team’s depth on the bench also helped the Pirates, as the flu and injuries had an impact on BCI’s effectiveness in the final. The match-up was the fourth of the year between the two evenly matched squads, with each team taking two victories, said BCI Head Coach Tom Bell. Other teams to compete in this year’s tournament included Rockland District High School, Rideau District High School, St. Lawrence Secondary School and Perth and District Collegiate Institute. Since I was a child, I have always wanted to go to Wrestlemania. Known in the pro wrestling world as “the showcase of the immortals”, World Wrestling Entertainment’s best will come out to fight at the annual April pay per view extravaganza, and I have always had a dream of being there to catch the moments in living colour. This year, Wrestlemania turns thirty, which means according to Canadian psychological indexes, if it were a person it would no longer be a youth. Wrestling can be brash, barbaric, over the top, downright cooky, and an overall unreal experience for many. Yet, for me, it’s poetry in motion. Athleticism that is unmatched, vibrant colours, memorable theme songs, and the ever-evolving saga of good versus evil. Pro wrestling explores a young boy’s primal instincts for action, excitement, and every other type of aggressive stimulation, while also reminding us not to try it at home, and to “be a star” not a bully. Professional wrestling rewards us when we least expect it, by finally recognizing the underdog’s true potential, and allowing their hard work to shine in front of a captive audience of cheers and boos. I am a 26 year old author, columnist, television personality, event coordinator, and city councilor, and I can say with sincerity that the WWE taught me to read. My desire to get in on the action while my family struggled to pay for television (let alone pay per views, or tickets for live events) led me to purchasing monthly magazines like WWE Raw, Pro Wrestling Illustrated, and The Wrestler. The colourful pictures were fun and provocative at first, but it was my complete passion for the product itself that finally put my eyes to the text.

Emblazoned with a memorable image of Michaels wearing his new prize or leather and gold, I remember the awe I felt, even now. I also remember the frustration I felt that I couldn’t order Wrestlemania XII, and that I was being left behind by my peers, and this was my only way into their world. I remember staying up late sounding out words and stringing phrases together about ‘snapmeres,’ ‘toe-holds’, ‘super-kicks’, ‘sharpshooters’, and a barrage of other names for wrestling moves that I began practicing on my plush toy.

On March 31st, 1996 Shawn “Heartbreak Kid” Michaels accomplished his “boyhood dream” of becoming the world heavyweight champion in a grueling 63 minute “Iron Man” match against Canadian icon, Bret “Hitman” Hart at the Arrowhead Pond in Anahiem, California.

Fast forward just two years, and I had probably read about more bouts than I had ever seen on television, and I could sit back and appreciate the art of the story arch with so much more authority. The beautiful symmetry of the performance. Combat ballet between two live action superheroes, flying through the air to capture the hearts and minds of all that raphy, the physical discipline, and the fact that each night these performers took each other’s lives in their hands to create a memory for another child like me. I am no longer a little boy, staring at a magazine on a rack, wishing so desperately to read it and comprehend through described visualization, a match in a world I could not be a part of. Instead now,

My literacy was late developing, and my interest in books was limited, but my sheer obsession with the unreal world of professional wrestling led me to crave more information than basic cable could produce. It pushed me to scrape together my first five dollars, visit my local convenience store and slap down my coins to purchase the next edition of their monthly magazine.

stood before them. I could better appreciate the choreogI am a young person who has pushed his way in as part of their universe, many times borrowing their swagger, their attitudes and their confidence when delivering my own monologues. The WWE has become a part of my story. My illusion of disbelief has helped my imagination to develop, and helped my character to respond to adversity. And you can bet there are many more like me, who take comfort in knowing that at the end of a hard day’s work, these men and women lick their wounds, remove their costumes, and lie in bed dreaming about their Wrestlemania moment, hoping that they too can capture that feeling of awe, that inspiring second of poetic triumph, and the heart of a little boy or girl like I was, who just wanted to share in their journey, and watch their favourite hero fly. I still get chills sometimes, and I am sure I always will. I am still mesmerized by the moments of intestinal fortitude, where “the irresistible force meets the immovable object,” and one day I hope that my dream of sitting up close at the “grand-daddy of them all” comes true. Not just for me, but for the little boy who wanted to see this so bad that he learned all the words he could, just to imagine it right. And also for the little boy or girl who grows into the superstar who puts their careers on the line every night, so that we can all take part in the moments that define their lives.

Local 9 year old boy is making waves with his homemade doggie treats Many people wonder if they could ever run their own business and do not and then there are those with the true Entrepreneur spirit inside of them. This could be no more true than for Sebastian Ferguson, Sebastian is just 9 years old but operates his own business already! Sebastian is the owner/operator of Bailey’s Biscuits which produces homemade doggie treats. Sebastian is currently selling his doggie treats in the 1000 Islands Mall at the “Ours About 2B Yours” craft store. However, during the summer season you can find Sebastian selling his doggie treats at the Brockville Farmers Market as well as various festivals around the area. Sebastian already has a strong following in the summer at the Farmers’ Market with regular customers coming on a weekly basis to buy his doggie treats. In an age when most children are stuck in front of some type of screen it is exciting to see a 9 year old running a business like this. I strongly recommend that you purchase some of his treats as your dog will love them. I also invite you to LIKE his Facebook page located at https:// www.facebook.com/baileysbuscuits
