KnowBrockville - Brockville’s only 100% Locally Owned Newspaper! Cellulite Most women dread bathing suit season. With summer fast approaching Cellulite becomes one of the biggest and most talked about concerns. Cellulite can be caused by hormonal changes, heredity, poor circulation, lifestyle choices or many other factors. Cellulite can begin after puberty regardless of weight or how active you are. Cellulite refers to the dimpled appearance of skin that usually appears on the hips, thighs or buttocks. Fat deposits push and distort the connective tissues beneath the skin, leading to characteristic changes in the appearance of the skin. Weight loss does not always improve the appearance of cellulite. In fact in certain individuals it can worsen the appearance. With this being said… proper nutrition, drinking lots of water and exercise is best done in combination with any topical treatment. There are many topical treatments available. Caffeine and Theophyilline are present in many Cellulite creams and are promoted for their ability to break down fat stores. Biotherm’s new Body Sculpter addresses these problems with its unique formula, which combines red algae extract and pure caffeine that targets those concerns to give you a much smoother shape . In clinical studies women stared to see visible change after 7 days of use, witnessing a significant decrease in the appearance of cellulite around the thighs. This new and innovative product can be paired with Biotherm’s Celluli Eraser for a complete and even more effective treatment. Body Sculpter has also been designed to please all the senses. A lightweight emulsion gel feels ultra fresh upon application, so take your time while you massage it into your skin and enjoy the truly sweet and clean smell from this beautiful product.

KnowBrockville helps out with McHappy Day!

My PDF File created on Tuesday, May 13 2014 10:29:54 PM

KnowBrockville’s owner/publisher Tim Sharpe was invited to help out at McHappy Day at both locations of McDonald’s in Brockville. The Parkedale McDonald’s location raised a little over $4,000 that will go towards Ronald McDonald House as well as other local children’s charities. 1st Annual KnowBrockville’s Maw4Paws Walk!

KnowBrockville organized its 1st Annual Maw4Paws Walkathon on Saturday May 10th, 40 walkers and their dogs showed up and with the walker pledges, bbq fundraising and the sponsors an amazing $2600 was raised by this great event with funds going to I Am Alive Dog Rescue.

Our team of Community Event Photographers is Growing!

FROM THE PUBLISHER Welcome to the May/June edition of your KnowBrockville. The great weather is upon us and that means there are many great events happening Page 3 in our area. KnowBrockvillehas added a total of 3 photographers to our team so we will be out covering many more events this summer and it looks like it is going to be an exciting summer for KnowBrockville! I am very proud to announce that KnowBrockville has been asked to be the local print/online media sponsor of the 1000 Islands Regatta that is being held in Brockville June 27, 28 and 29th. These hydroplane races attract large crowds as well as tourists to the Brockville area. Their committee has a huge weekend planned with live music and great food choices all weekend. It was a proud moment when my 100% locally owned small business was asked to be the sponsor. I have personally worked hard mainly on my own building my business to the point where it is today. It is typical that most people do not see the hard work that local small businesses put behind their business. My business is not a franchise and therefore does not have the franchise corporation behind it. In my eyes this is a good thing as this means my small business is 100% locally owned and controlled. Each month I sit behind my computer and design this great publication whereas other publications have their design work done in a big city corporate office. This is what running a local small business is all about do the hard work ourselves and personally I would not have it any other way! Stay tuned as KnowBrockville will be out in our community this summer, so if you see myself or one of my staff helping in the community then why not come up to us and say hi. We have become a go to place for local Brockville news, sports, weather, events and so much more and I would like to thank all of our readers, advertisers and supporters for your support. When I first started KnowBrockville I looked for a local group that I could support, and along came I Am Alive Dog Rescue. I have known this great group of people now for almost 2 years and even now I am amazed on a daily basis about the work they do and the dedication they have to saving dogs in need.

I Am Alive Dog Rescue Spaghetti Dinner

These individuals will go beyond the edge of the earth to save a dog, whether it is driving to transport a dog across the border or running online auctions to help pay for vet bills these individuals truly have unconditional love for the dogs they save. On Sunday May 4th KnowBrockville was invited to the I Am Alive Dog Rescue Spaghetti Dinner at the MERC Hall in Maitland and My PDF Filesay created on Tuesday, May 13 2014 10:29:54 PM although I never eat spaghetti I must Mika and her mother made a delicious spaghetti dinner. Even in the food would have not been as delicious as it was the company around us that night were well worth the cost of the dinner.

Page 7

Seventy tickets were sold raising approximately $1400, there were also door prizes as well as silent auction items with all the funds going towards I Am Alive Dog Rescue. The walk saw 40 walkers come out with their dog(s) and walk the pathway by Hardy Park, although the weather forecast looked bleak it ended up being a gorgeous day. The 40 walkers raised an amazing $1,737 in pledges and then with the fundraising BBQ and the sponsors an amazing final total of $2,600 was raised which is amazing for the first edition of this event that KnowBrockville plans to repeat on a yearly basis. When I first had the idea for the walkathon I thought maybe we would get 20 walkers but once again our great followers came out to support a local group that KnowBrockville supports. It gives me great pleasure knowing that my business can help such a great group. Gallery ‘Inspired’ by Local Artist By Christina Chrysler The Marianne van Silfhout Gallery will be honouring outstanding contribution to the visual arts in its first ever Art Draw and Gala event, “Inspired: A Celebration of Visual Art”, Saturday May 31st, 2014. The evening event will honour area artist Henry Vyfvinkel as the first inductee into the gallery’s Visual Arts Hall of Fame, as well as provide premium ticket holders an opportunity to leave with original art through the art draw portion of the event. ‘Inspired’ is set to begin with cocktails at 7pm, with the award and art draw following at 8pm. On display will be original art produced by Mr. Vyfvinkel as well as a number of his former students and colleagues. Henry Vyfvinkel is well known through out the region for his exceptional talent as well as his willingness to share his gift with aspiring artists. Over the course of his career, Henry has taught hundreds of students and is particularly well known for his role in the development of the Summer School of the Arts at St. Lawrence College. Teaching wasn’t limited to the classroom however; his groups of students were typically found on the islands surrounding Brockville, in Kemptville, and on the streets of Lynn. Henry also took his lessons abroad, imparting knowledge, encouraging, and inspiring his students every step of the way. In addition, Henry has been an active member of numerous art groups within the region, and a strong advocate for the arts within our community. My PDF File created on Tuesday, May 13 2014 10:29:54 PM Art for ‘Inspired’ has been generously donated to the gallery by regional artists.”The best thing about being honoured, as far as I am concerned, is sharing the spotlight with my fellow artists”, says Vyfvinkel. “As we seek greater public support of the Gallery, the task becomes easier when our area artists have already shown their support”..

Page 9

Those attending ‘Inspired’ have the option of purchasing premium tickets to the event which guarantee the ticket holder will leave with an original work of art. Ticket numbers will be drawn at random, providing each premium ticket holder a time limited opportunity to select their favourite work of art. It is sure to be an exciting, and perhaps competitive, evening. Funds raised through the event will go toward the Marianne van Silfhout Community Programming Fund. This fund is designed to assist in bringing the visual arts to our community by providing learning opportunities for area schools, supporting our SLC student community, hosting public events and artist discussions, and many other outreach and collaborative projects. As the region’s only public art gallery, The Marianne van Silfhout Gallery, located on the Brockville Campus of St. Lawrence College, provides the public with free access to the visual arts, and aims to continue to provide the community with exceptional exhibitions from artists at the local, regional, national and international level. Raising a family

With the scent of Mother’s Day bouquets still lingering, it’s an appropriate time to reflect on family – and the considerable financial expenditure it takes to support your children’s well-being. Your financial needs are bound to be many – from providing for your children day-to-day to their recreational and future educational needs, to protecting and providing for them should you become ill, incapacitated or die, and ultimately, to ensure your heirs will receive the legacy you wish to leave them. Do your homework • Know the ins and outs of maternity and parental leave Federal employment insurance (EI) does not fully cover the income lost by the spouse taking leave. Taxes deducted at source from the leave benefits may not cover your total personal income tax liability at the end of your leave. There may be income restrictions requiring you to pay back EI benefits depending on your year-end income. Self- employed individuals and those who do not pay into EI do not have leave benefits. My PDF File created on Tuesday, May 13 2014 10:29:54 PM • Know about child care costs and tax breaks Child care expenses are tax deductible must be claimed by the spouse with the lower income and the deductions are limited and vary by the child’s age. • Build a safety net for your family Protect your family with life and disability insurance in the event an accident or illness prevents you from providing for them. Look into the future • Education – especially post-secondary education – is expensive. Start early with a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) that takes full advantage of federal and provincial programs (such as the Canadian Education Savings Grant – CESG*) that provide additional funds. When they are ready to begin a post-secondary education, check out available bursaries and scholarships to offset costs. • Begin an investment portfolio designed to save for university or college. Consider establishing a trust for your children that will provide them with income and provide you with tax benefits from income-splitting. • Take full advantage of all post-secondary tax credits. Will and estate planning • When you have children, revise your will to include trustees and/ or guardians for your minor children. • Review your estate plan regularly and as your personal financial situations changes. Develop your estate plan in consultation with your accountant, lawyer and other professional advisors. Children are wonderful – but they do bring with them many new needs to be met and goals to fulfill. Talk to your legal and professional advisors to get the right plan for you and yours. *The Canada Education Savings Grant and Canada Learning Bond (CLB) are provided by the Government of Canada. CLB eligibility depends on family income levels. Some provinces make education savings grants available to their residents. My Lunch With the Mayor of Toronto I have been asked to share some political perspectives with the readers of KnowBrockville as we began the countdown to what may end up being a very big election year on multiple levels, but I don’t want to just use this forum to push my opinions and platforms around. This column is worth more than a candidate clamouring for support, so I’ve decided to focus on more than just our local government, and look outside our own hometown and focus instead on some of the hot button issues facing the public. What better place to start than with the number one political juggernaut dominating our online news-feeds...Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. Now in fairness, this article’s title is a touch misleading. I didn’t sit down at the same table as Ford when I had the unique opportunity to watch him speak at a recent Economic Club of Canada meeting in Toronto at the Hilton Hotel. No, actually, I was there as a spectator. If anything, I was hoping I would steal his attention just long enough to bend his ear on affordable housing and how he could champion the business case for housing investment, being that there are area’s in his city where families have been on the affordable housing waiting list for over ten years. I would soon learn that any suggestions I might have, as a neighbouring politician or activist or onlooker, would be secondary to the media circus that followed him wherever he goes. Many of you may have read about this event in MacLean’s magazine or the Toronto Star, or watched disenfranchised luncheon attendees storm out of the banquet room on CP24 and CityTV, and who could blame them? After all, this is the infamous meeting where Mayor Ford was over an hour late...to a luncheon...in his honour...on a work day. I can’t say as though I didn’t empathise with someone having to leave to return for work, demanding a refund. This is not what the 300+ people who had paid a pretty penny to be there had coughed up their coins for. They had come to be informed. Some maybe even to show support for the controversial mayor. Mayor Ford’s addiction issues have been well documented, and remarked upon many times over his term in office. Rob exhumes a larger than life public profile, which more often than not distracts the general public from his sometimes questionable public policy decisions. The truth is, what someone does in their basement or living room is probably none of our business. However, those rules are suspended in public life. This is an adjustment that all of us must make, and all of us must worry about. Sadly, what I don’t seem to hear enough of recently is how sad addiction can be and how instead of demeaning perceived buffoonery, we should be encouraging rehabilitation.

My PDF File created on Tuesday, May

I could easily make the argument that Rob is actually the victim of an elaborate media campaign. Doolittle’s investigation has led to some important findings, and I won’t for a second dis13Robyn 2014 10:29:54 PM Page 13 credit the wrong-doings of Toronto’s elected figurehead. Still what I witnessed on this cold January day, was sad. I saw an embarrassed man who was out of breath, in poor physical health and sweating through his business suit, attempting to condense his speech to just a mere few minutes in an effort to get everyone’s schedules back on track. What I saw was more reporters than paying customers, each searching for the next big story...lurking with their cameras ready, microphones pointed outward aggressively, anxiously anticipating a misstep by the mayor. Rob Ford has become the Robert Downey Jr. of political life. What many saw as a sloppy mayor who can’t keep his schedule together, delivering a poorly constructed speech, I witnessed differently. I visualized a man, who was exhausted from ducking reporters who had chased him all over a building. This same man had no choice but to come up with excuses for his tardiness, and a reporter’s self-fulfilling prophecy came true. What makes all of this worse is now you have divisiveness in Canada’s largest urban centre. Those that see the mayor as an albatross because of his addictions versus those that see the mayor as a victim of his addictions who can more easily identify with him. What few seem to be talking about are the issues. This many times, includes Rob himself. His speech consisted of the same name-calling style of politics that many of us have become used to. Lambasting his colleagues as spend-thrifts who “tax, tax, tax, and spend, spend, spend,” without ever really addressing the same working class citizens who support him, and the issues that complicate their lives. We all started to wonder why we were there. A rubber chicken hardly makes up for a sour taste in your mouth. I felt sympathy for the organizers who ended up refunding everyone’s admission charges, and taking a loss on the event. I felt sympathy for the supporters who continue to find it hard to support someone they admire or respect. I found it tragic that this vulture-like type of media coverage did very little to even make for a meaningful story at the cost of so much time and energy. I felt sadness for a mayor who on a personal level was engaging and polite to speak to, even if I don’t personally agree with his opinions most of the time. Mostly, I felt sadness for those marginalized citizens of Toronto, who’s issues aren’t what is being talked about in the media.
