Free yourself of cold and flu this season As temperatures start to dip lower and lower, many Canadians are seeking refuge indoors. And with this yearly trend of cold weather escapism beginning, it’s no surprise cold and flu are becoming more prominent. Besides the discomfort and inconvenience of being sick, for some, suffering from a cold or the flu can lead to more serious complications. The risks for complications, including pneumonia or even death, increase for individuals who already suffer from respiratory illnesses like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, causes symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing up phlegm. If you are suffering from these symptoms, speak to your physician about a COPD assessment and finding the right treatment options for you. Regardless of whether you are at risk of complications from a cold or flu, there are steps you can take to help reduce your chance of getting sick in the first place. Here are three easy tips: 1. Get the flu shot. This sounds like obvious advice, but only two of every five Canadians get the flu shot.1 The flu vaccine is designed to fight against this year’s most common strains of the virus. You can get a flu shot at your doctor’s office, and even local pharmacies offer flu immunization in many provinces. 2. Keep a clean house. Not only is washing your hands important, but also make sure you clean and disinfect high-traffic surfaces in your home, like faucets and door knobs, to help prevent the spread of germs. 3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. It’s much easier to get sick when our bodies aren’t in top shape. Living a healthy lifestyle gives you a stronger immune system to help fight off disease. For people with respiratory illnesses, like COPD, getting a cold or the flu makes it even harder to breathe and be active. Not only that, but suffering from a cold or flu also increases the chances of getting a more serious respiratory tract infection. Be sure to eat right, sleep well and stay active.
Fall Color Trends While you may not be excited for summer to officially end, the good news is that a new season means new eye shadow and lipstick colors. This fall is the ultimate lipstick season when it comes to darker, striking hues and deeper pigments. Colors like wine and berry are taking center stage, alongside strong brown and beige tones. For red lipstick lovers, this season has plenty of bright red shades to choose from. For those that tend to shy away from a strong lip, there are great options for you too—from refreshing nudes to pinky-beige colors. Bold lips are here to stay, and there are several ways to wear this trend with plenty of other hues than red. Berry, pinks and crimson, are all great choices and a way to brighten the skin quickly! Apply bold lip colors as a sheer stain, by using your finger to lightly tap the lipstick onto your lips. You can also add shine and moisture by applying a little lip gloss in the center of the lips and blending outward. One of the most important features on the face is perfect brows! While you might not have the best shape to begin with, there are always ways to manipulate your eyebrows adding emphasis on the arch is a great way to enhance your eyebrows without looking like you stenciled them on. Using brow gel will keep your brows looking natural and intact. Metallic eye shadows are big this year adding highlights to colored eyes and graphic eye liner. From hints of metallic to splashes of electric hues and perfectly flawless skin, you’ll want to wear everyone of this seasons newest makeup trends, these fall 2014 colors are breathtaking! KnowBrockville was proud to present the Student Advisory Council at St. Lawrence College with 2 cheques, one for $100 from Quesada Brockville and the second for $100 from the KnowBrockville Team.

Welcome to the October issue of your KnowBrockville, Brockville’s only locally owned newspaper. October has been a busy and exciting month for the entire KnowBrockville team. We have been able to attend all community events in our great city and bring them to our readers and October also sees our family growing. We are pleased to say that the 1st edition of our second newspaper “Know The Rideau” is being distributed throughout Smiths Falls, Perth and Merrickville. In a time when larger newspapers and even franchised newspapers are closing down it is a great feeling knowing that our successful business model has allowed this expansion. And we are pleased by the huge great response we have already had with Know The Rideau! You may have noticed all of the pink in this month’s issue, we have gone pink in October in recognition that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Our entire team supports the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and this gesture is the least that we could do to show our support. Until next month have a great October and Happy Halloween. Tim
What does it mean to be a 100% locally owned business? KnowBrockville has been in business for more than 2 years now and we are 100% locally owned and operated and in fact the only newspaper in Brockville that is 100% locally owned. So what does it mean to be 100% locally owned? As a locally owned business your based in your community, your employees are in your community and 100% of your revenues remain in your community!
In last month’s issue of KnowBrockville we featured Dustin Crowder in a story about this young man making bracelets and selling them to help raise funds for MS Research, well thanks to KnowBrockville Dustin received congratulations from MP Gord Brown for Dustin being in our great newspaper. We are all proud of your Dustin.
I could call myself 1000% locally owned but I do have a conscience and some integrity. Calling myself 1000% locally owned would be lying to my readers and advertisers and I personally would not feel right doing this. My readers and advertisers have come to respect the honesty that KnowBrockville brings to them each month and we would never go against that. For a business to call themselves 1000% locally owned only shows the responsibility and integrity that business does not have. In reality 1000% does not exist nor does a business that calls itself 1000% locally owned. We are not in grade school are we? Well actually grade school students even know there is no such thing as 1000% of this or that. So if someone attempts to tell you or your business that they are 1000% locally owned they are simply lying to you and do not believe them! In reality a business grows faster than others for a number of factors and these include better pricing, more options and a better overall product and not grade school games.
During the recent JRFM Food Bank fill up event at Brett’s Valumart in Brockville, KnowBrockville owner Tim Sharpe purchased 10 bags filled with food and donated them as well as a cheque for $50 we give back to our community!
So I will end this by thanking the thousands of readers that pick up a copy of KnowBrockville each and every month, the over 14,700 followers that we have on Facebook as well as the many advertisers that also support what we stand for “supporting local”! Tim Owner/Publisher

The Future Looks Brighter With Drake Like many city residents, Cec Drake believes Brockville is in dire need of a change, but unlike most, he’s prepared to do something about it. The seasoned business man is running for mayor in Brockville’s October 27th municipal election, and few candidates have the vested interest in halting the city’s decline that Drake does.
Having chosen to relocate to Brockville from Mississauga in 2007, Mr.Drake and his wife Mary viewed the city as a beautiful, vibrant place where they could enjoy their future retirement to the fullest. Under the current administration however, Drake has watched the once thriving city crumble around him, and his vision of a retirement Mecca become murky. Just how much Brockville has deteriorated recently became evident to Drake when he assessed the city’s “performance” and issued a “report card”. What he found was disturbing: high police, fire, and city operations costs; deteriorating infrastructure; decay and garbage in the downtown core; little economic development or city growth; and many missed opportunities to turn things around because of city council’s inability to make decisions. For a man who has held senior management positions at large companies such as Kellogg’s, RJR Nabisco, Wing’s Foods and most recently, Burnbrae farms, Drake views this picture as unacceptable, and has developed an economic recovery plan he is confident will breathe life back into Brockville. The details of Mr.Drake’s recovery plan include: reduce city spending; lower policing costs, while retaining Brockville Police Services as the city’s policing force; expand economic development by focusing on manufacturing, distribution and commercial enterprises; revitalize the downtown core with an aim of increasing tourism; engage city youth through job and training opportunities; expand the city’s cultural experience; construct a sports and recreation centre, providing a hub for sporting events for all ages; and complete the Brock Trail, a venture which has been incomplete for far too long. While Drake’s plan may seem ambitious, his experience growing large business has equipped him with the specific management skills needed for its successful implementation. This experience is what sets Drake apart from his contenders, and makes him the ideal candidate to save Brockville from its own demise. For a man whose future intentions include retirement in a flourishing community where he can enjoy visits from his three children and six grandchildren, restoring Brockville’s prosperity is vital. It is this honest desire to restore the city’s vitality and ensure a bright future that Drake hopes voters will relate to and, by electing him as mayor, enable him to begin the economic overhaul the city desperately needs. For further information on Cec Drake’s mayoral campaign, visit www.cecdrake.ca. Story written by KnowBrockville Journalist Laura MacPhee

Health Unit Encourages You to Rethink Your Drinking
For the first time ever, Canada has one national set of low-risk alcohol drinking guidelines. These guidelines, intended for Canadians of legal drinking age who choose to drink alcohol, aim to provide consistent information across the country to help Canadians moderate their alcohol consumption and make informed choices. The new guidelines outline standard drinks sizes, limits for men and women, discuss when the limit is zero, and provide healthy alternatives and tips to decrease health risks.
On October 9th members of the Brockville Busines Network https://www.facebook.com/BrockvilleBusinessNetwork presented Making Play Possible with a cheque in the amount of $500. Making Play Possible helps children that normally would not be able to participate in local sports because of financial issues still be able to participate. New Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Brockville General Hospital It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Cathy Cassidy-Gifford to Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Brockville General Hospital. Cathy is currently a clinical director at BGH with responsibility for our critical care areas, but the depth of her experience cuts much deeper than that, including leadership roles in continuous improvement, quality, and performance. As you would expect, Cathy is a Registered Nurse. That’s the foundation of the role she’s moving into, but her growth through the healthcare system at such places as the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Perth and Smiths Falls Hospital, and of course Brockville General Hospital, has prepared her well for the senior leadership part of the role. “I am very proud of Cathy’s accomplishment. She successfully navigated a rigorous and competitive process, which required her to attend multiple levels of interviews with a diverse group of people – including a patient and family representative” says Tony Weeks BGH’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are all very pleased that we have found a candidate that understands the importance of local healthcare needs, balanced with the need to think as a broader system” says Weeks. Cathy will begin her new role the week of October 6, 2014. (Submitted)

STORIES FROM THE STACKS BROCKVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY BY: KATHY COLWELL October 2014
While I am writing this we are basking in the warmth of our fall reprieve at the end of September. At these temperatures my mind tends to drift toward kayaking, rather than canning or Christmas gift making---the focus of this column. Before we know it, however, we will be wishing we had preserved some of the flavours of summer or started planning, and actually making, gifts for those special people on our gift list. I hope the following titles will inspire you to do at least a little of each. Happy fall and happy reading! Capture the taste of summer for yourself, or as gift giving possibilities, with the help of these titles: PRESERVING BY THE PINT: quick seasonal canning for small spaces, by Marisa McClellan, is perfect for empty-nesters, small households or those just wanting to try a new recipe without committing to a mammoth sized batch. It covers some of the basics of canning and includes a very wide range of recipes, chutneys, sauces, jams, pickles and salsas, to name a few. There are also recipes thrown in to incorporate some of the preserves in main dishes. PUT ‘EM UP! : a comprehensive home preserving guide for the creative cook: from drying and freezing to canning and pickling, is a great resource by Sherri Brooks Vinton. It includes line drawings and step by step guidance for most stages of each technique, describes the equipment required and what you might already own that could be used as a substitution. Each recipe is also clearly crossed referenced with the processes involved and the page where you can find in-depth explanation. There is no need to feel intimidated about preserving with Sherri by your side in the kitchen! Other go-to titles: All about Canning & Preserving, by Irma Rombauer from the Joy of Cooking “All About” series. Canning and Preserving for Beginners, an ebook by Rockridge Press Can it! Start Canning and Preserving at Home Today, an ebook by Jackie Parente Now on to non-edible gift making ideas….. The child on your Christmas list may just love the adorable designs in AMIGURAMI KNITS, by Hansi Singh or AMIGURUMI SUPER HAPPY CROCHET CUTE, by Elisabeth A. Doherty. These are not your typical cutesy stuffed toys but quite detailed, yet doable, sea creatures, insects, food and anime style creatures. I may have to knit up the praying mantis or hermit crab just for the fun of it! Quilters, even beginners, will enjoy the 111+ designs included in TWO HOUR MINI QUILT PROJECTS by McKenzie Kate. There are patterns for all seasons and occasions and could be easily adapted to projects not shown in the book. Think raw edge appliqued wall-hangings or table runners. The possibilities are endless in one of my favourite go-to idea books. ONE SKEIN WONDERS: 101 PROJECTS FROM CROCHETERS AROUND THE WORLD, by Judy Durant is full of great gift ideas ranging from jewelry and other accessories to baby blankets, a yoga mat bag and pillows to name a few. Without having to make a big commitment of time or money you can give a custom made gift to those special people on your list! More titles that caught my eye: Teeny Tiny Crochet, an ebook by Catherine Hirst Jewelry to Crochet, an ebook by Susan Lowman 100 Snowflakes to Crochet: Make your own snowdrift to give or to keep, by Caitlin Sainio Tatted Snowflakes, an ebook by Vida Sunderman

Quality Creations in the 1000 Islands Mall
Quality Creations - Brockville is a locally operated artisan co-op shop which was “born” in May 2014. We are conveniently located just inside the west entrance of the 1000 Islands Mall, beside The Royal Bank. As a coop, we have no owner, but members who each pay a portion of the rent and no staff as we are operated by our vendors who take turns minding the shop. All of our vendors live in Brockville and area and we are very diverse. We are a group of multi-talented, multi-generational and multi-cultural backgrounds who have chosen this space to highlight our unique products, services and businesses. The shop supports youth entrepreneurs who have opened their own craft businesses, as well as artisans who have left a career or retired to pursue their talent as their livelihood. A trip through our doors provides a showcase of original art, wood carvings, photography, custom décor items for the home and cottage, handcrafted jewellery, scarves and clothing, crocheted designs, unique refurbished and repurposed furniture, custom children’s creations, pottery, stained glass art, therapy products for dogs, a professional hemming service and endless gift ideas for the upcoming holiday season. Come in and check us out!
