Brockville General Hospital News - April - May 2013

Time-Honoured BGH Volunteer Tradition is All Sewn Up Brockville: In the deep, dark hallways of lower Brockville General Hospital Charles Street Site, there is a room filled with sun, sewing and sisterly conversation-a room that has, in one form or another, operated at BGH since 1889. The Joy Short Sewing Room, once a central gathering place for female volunteers, now seems one of the hospital’s best-kept secrets despite the impressive longevity.

My mom, Penny Looby, is the best mom. I was diagnosed with a hearing loss when I was 4, and there was no one else around in Mallorytown at the time who had a hearing loss, so my parents were pretty much pioneers in raising a hearing impaired girl. She would fight for me to get everything I needed to learn in school, she fought for me to get speech therapy. She would take time out of her day and do speech with me. All while she worked full time. First at P&G, then at Multi Laser in Gananoque. My dad was working seasonally on a golf course. But Mom was always the one who would make sure I was able to participate in anything. I played baseball from the time I was 4 until I was 14. At first, both my parents coached, and mom taught me how to read my dad’s lips to tell me to steal second or third or to stop. She helped me learn how to, basically survive in a “hearing world”. Thanks to her, I have no problem going up to people and asking them to repeat or to slow down so I can understand them. I have no problem asking if there is captioning or subtitles on something. Thanks to my mom advocating for me, I can now advocate for myself.

Twenty-eight Local Babies Participated in Guinness World Record Attempt. [Brockville, Ont.] April 22, 2013 - Last Saturday, 28 babies participated in The Great Cloth Diaper Change at the Thousand Islands Mall in Brockville in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the number of babies changed into a cloth diaper within a 24 hour time period. It’ll be a few days before the unofficial worldwide total is announced and a few months before the official Guinness total is verified and announced. In Brockville we had more babies turn out than ever before – and this is our first year to qualify for the official Guinness total (a minimum of 25 babies is required to be counted towards the Guinness record). Last year, The Great Cloth Diaper Change broke the Guinness World Record for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously with 8251 participants at

The Zoomer Health & Lifestyle Expo

189 locations in 11 countries. This year, there were 285 locations in 17 countries. So far, the unofficial total is 6,509 participants (including the 28 in Brockville): 131 locations still have to report their totals. It is expected that the Guinness World Record will be broken again this year as more and more families are choosing to use cloth diapers. According to the Real Diaper Industry Association, in recent years, cloth diaper sales have grown by over 30 percent in the USA. Cloth diapers have come a long way in the past several years and this event is designed to be an eye-opener and an inspiration for expecting and new parents to use cloth diapers, a more planet- and wallet-friendly alternative to disposable diapers. Families can save an average of $2,000 by choosing cloth diapers, according to the Real Diaper Association – and more when the diapers are used for more than one child.

Laura Parrott, Alexandra Belanger, Emma Mayer and Lily Mayer participated on Saturday April 20th in an attempt to break a world’s record during the Great Cloth Diaper Change that was held at the 1000 Islands Mall. Details if the record was broken will come soon! Consistency is the key In the world of health and fitness consistency is the key, consistency with nutrition, exercise and rest. I truly believe that all three of these components are important to a healthy balanced lifestyle. I hear so many people say I eat healthy and exercise but I still feel drained or can’t get my extra weight off. Sometimes the one thing they are missing is adequate rest. As adults we need a minimum of 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night to be rested. As far as nutrition goes the important thing to remember is to eat for fuel and well being. I preach eating clean and a proper balance of protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates (healthy complex carbs). Eating clean means to eat foods that are not processed, organic when possible, fresh, local and real (has a mother or grown from the earth). If you are to eat a packed food make sure there is less than 5 ingredients and that you know what the ingredients are. If you don’t know what the ingredient is don’t eat it, I call those anti-foods. It’s important to have 5 to six small meals a day and do this 7 days a week. I hear so many people say that they eat well Monday-Friday and then eat whatever they want over the weekends (junk food etc…) If you think of it doing this adds up to eating unhealthy for over 1/3 of your entire year. No wonder you are not reaching your results or optimal body composition. Consistency is the Key. That being said we are all human and we need to treat ourselves once and a while. That is why I allow my clients and myself to have a treat meal once a week. Now with fitness its more than proven that exercise has thousands of benefits. Benefits anywhere from looking great, feeling great, getting sick less often, living longer and in better health, I could honestly go on forever with why consistent excise is important. But it’s important to stay consistent with your exercise and healthy lifestyle. I highly recommend at least 3 sessions for strength training a week of 30 to 45 minutes and a minimum of 4 sessions of 30-60 minutes for cardiovascular exercise. Cardio can be anything from a brisk walk, a bike ride, a local group fitness class, sprints, swimming etc… I hear so many people say well I don’t have time for all of that. But if you don’t make time now for health and exercise you will have to make time for illness now and in later life. Which would you prefer? Staying consistent with your exercise will also become a habit. Once the habit is formed its part of your lifestyle and once you have a healthy consistent balanced lifestyle you will feel better then you EVER have! What are you waiting for, instead of saying you will start tomorrow, start today! Get a trainer, join a gym, get outside with the family, go to the farmers market and local grocery store and get to bed at a decent time. Your body will thank you and so will your mind. Three UCDSB Students Named Winners of UCTV Logo Design Contest (Brockville) - Three students from across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) have been named the winners of the UCTV Logo Design Contest, hosted by the UCDSB Communications and Relationship Management department. Almonte and District High School grade 12 student Fenton Isaacs, Rideau District High School grade 12 student Kyla Doornbos, and Thousand Islands Secondary School grade 11 student Paige VanDrunen will receive a $100 gift card to the store of their choice, as well as a plaque recognizing their creativity and hard work. The contest, which ran from mid-January until March 1, was open to students in grades 9-12. Their challenge was to come up with the look of UCTV, the board’s brand new online streaming channel. Although the initial contest rules stated that there would be one overall winner, judges decided that there were aspects of each of the three logo designs that were crucial. These aspects will be incorporated into a final design which will be completed by a professional graphic designer. The final logo will be featured in an animation at the beginning of each UCTV broadcast, and potentially be used for future promotional materials. “UCTV is a live broadcasting channel for UCDSB students, so it only makes sense to have our students design the look of it,” said David K. Thomas, Director of Education. “Students can then use their designs for their own portfolios.” VanDrunen participated in the logo contest because her communications technology class took it on as an assignment. “I just looked on the board website and Google,” she said. “From that, I just came up with my own idea.” “I’m not really an artist,” she laughed. Isaacs said he participated in the contest because he likes graphic design, and he thought it would be a fun challenge. “I like the fact that it would be used throughout the board,” he said. Isaacs said he came up with the concept after taking some time to brainstorm. “I wanted it to be simple and clean,” he said. “I started with the TV, and then incorporated the text. I added the leaf after looking at the UCDSB logo.” Doornbos tried her hand at the contest after some encouragement from her mom and communications technology teacher. “I really like art,” she said. “So, I just wanted to try it and see what would happen.” “I’ve seen a lot of logos online with the cartoon TV,” she added. “I also watch TSN a lot, and that’s how I came up with the idea to write a tagline.” Doornbos said that her father is a landscaper, and he’s asked her many times to draw designs for him. “I don’t do a lot of art publicly - this is really it!” she said.

Brockville’s Best Mom!

Penny Leslie, she’s 52 and has a heart of gold. She’s the best mother I know, and I’m not just saying that because she’s mine. Since she was 10 she helped raise her baby brother, her other siblings children, children in children’s aid services (because her parents were foster parents and her sister is a worker) and several people who have been living on the street.

Right now my mother is housing myself and my best friend, and never treats Megan any differently, in fact she treats Megan like she’s her biological daughter & I know the love between them is true and strong. My momma will do anything for us, she bends over backwards and works hard to provide for us. She’s a loving wife, mother, sister and daughter. A few years back she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and earlier this year with angina which took her mother 18 years ago at the tender age of 55. I just want her to know that she is loved by all of us in this home and that we appreciate all the hard work she does both in the home (we moved to Brockville in 2012 after 12 years in a house she strives to make a home) and in her job as a waitress for Wok House in Prescott where she’s been for 27 years, first as Seaway Restaurant and now as Wok. Momma, you are by far the BEST mom in the world Submitted By Samantha.

My name is Mary Lynn Villeneuve (McLaughlin) I actually lived in Prescott and Cardinal back in the late 70’s and early 80’s so coming back to Brockville is coming home for me. My mom was born and raised here so I have been coming here all my life. I recently moved from Norwood Ontario which is near Peterborough. I have owned my own TravelOnly franchise going on 7 years now. Before that I worked in the trucking industry both as a long haul driver and then in the office/sales side of it. I am married to my husband Richard and we have an 8 year old son Jackson. Travel has always been my passion and 7 years ago I decided to finally take the plunge and purchase my own travel franchise. It was the best decision I ever made. I can honestly say I Love What I Do. TravelOnly is a family owned and operated Canadian Company with 38 years of experience. We are a licensed wholesale/retail travel agency from coast to coast. TravelOnly is governed by T.I.C.O in Ontario and the B.P.C.P.A in British Columbia and O.P.C in Québec. We adhere to all of their requirements and regulations. Travelonly is also an accredited I.A.T.A. appointed agency and a member of C.L.I.A, B.B.B and A.C.T.A. So why use a travel agent? As an agent I am here to work for you. I am a professional with extensive training. I can help you research a destination, make recommendations based on experience, arrange all of your reservations and ticketing and even help you fulfill special requests. As an agent we have enormous buying power with many of our preferred suppliers. Perhaps you want a special request for a hotel. As an agent I may send hundreds of clients to that hotel over the year. This may give me an edge over the individual going there for the first time asking for something special. With Travelonly being TICO registered that means you have myself and our company to stand behind you and work for you should problems arise. If you make the booking yourself such as online.. You only have yourself to fight to resolve issues. Should you still choose to book yourself online my only advice to you is to be very careful. Please ensure who you are dealing with is a legitimate and secure company. Most important though is to ensure they are TICO registered for your own protection. Most suppliers endorse and encourage you to book with a travel agent! It is important for you to understand the prices you see on legitimate online sites all agents have access to the same pricing. New regulations have been implemented in this industry to prevent discounting. If you ever want to check any destination, availability and pricing please do not hesitate to contact me. You just have to take the initiative to make a change in your life, stand up for yourself, build some self confidence and take control of YOU. Seek the help of others. MISCONCEPTIONS OF SELF DEFENSE What is Self Defense? I have asked myself many times and have come to the conclusion that it is an art in which one would preserve one’s well being or simply defending yourself against any harm. Then why does it seem so difficult at times to protect yourself and others against physical or mental harm. That brings up another question. Is Self Defense ALL physical? Well it is debatable right? I believe Self Defense is 90% Mental and 10% physical and some may definitely argue with that. Think about it……. Why resort to physical when you can defend yourself or defeat your opponent with your mind, sounds tricky. Well, if you can not be in a situation where you would need to defend yourself then that is half the battle. That’s right. Self Defense can be controlled by the proper prevention methods. Know the dangers and work to prevent yourself from being in the area or situation in the first place. If you can defend yourself with the mental then you don’t need the physical, very easy…..wrong. You cannot just wave a wand and say “From this day forward I will defend myself and others with my mind”. It doesn’t work that way, it takes some work and effort to achieve anything so why not Self Defense. First of all, if you find yourself in a situation where you need Self Defense then step back and look at how that came about in the first place. Did you allow yourself to be a target or have someone control your life? If so, and you want your life back then do something about it. Now people have many excuses why they should not learn to defend themselves and we can touch on just a few. For example: “Oh, I’m too old” “Look at me, who would bother me anyways” “I’m not strong enough” “ I don’t go out at night” “I have no time” “It costs too much” I could go on and on. There are many excuses. Well let me see if I can dispel some of these for you. You’re never too old, too young, ugly, good looking, weak or strong, financially strapped etc.etc. Now you don’t even have to go out at night because they will come to you anytime of the day or night and not surprisingly, they may even be living with you now. I tried to find some stats for our area but no one really takes the time to track much of this but trust me, from what I’ve been told there is a lot of domestic violence, sexual assaults, home invasions and more, in our own little area that we live in. Yes, it’s true but you never hear about them that much for the simple reason it is to protect the victims which makes a lot of sense to me. So to sum it up if you don’t hear about it then I guess it doesn’t happen here…. WRONG !! Don’t be afraid to seek out the help of others to help you achieve peace of mind. Learn the little things like avoidance, how to build self confidence, self esteem. You have choices, first is AVOID, second should be ESCAPE and your last choice should be ATTACK. When you attack then fight back with everything you have. By practicing simple physical techniques it will make these techniques more effective, especially when you are under stress. Let your instincts be your guide. If you can build your mental then you will find that people will not take advantage of you so often or so easily. You have to learn to build your inner self with lots of confidence and self esteem without these you will allow yourself to be a victim or be controlled in all aspects of your life. Learn to break free and be an individual, be yourself, the person God intended for you to be. Sometimes we just need a little help especially when things get all messed up. People sometimes think if they take a course to learn how to defend or protect themselves then they are weak. Not at all, it means you are stronger because you have taken the first step to be YOU again. <<<

How to survive mosquito season Some tips to protect skin and prevent bites (NC)—With the hot, humid, and dry summer months ahead, we can finally look forward to being outdoors and enjoying all the fun activities summer has to offer. However, summer is also a time where mosquitoes and deer ticks like to roam and make our lives miserable and uncomfortable. Here are some tips and recommendations to make sure you make it through mosquito season: • Wear light-coloured, loose clothes and avoid scented products when outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn, which is the peak feeding time for mosquitoes. • Remove areas of standing water near your house as they can be breeding areas for mosquitoes. • Clean Gutters: Gutters clogged with debris allow stagnant water to form perfect landing zones for mosquito eggs. • Wear closed shoes and a hat to avoid deer ticks. Tuck pants into socks. • Inspect your clothing and body after exploring wooded or grassy areas.

Zeidenberg explains that the best thing homeowners can do to protect themselves is to be prepared for those conversations. Homeowners should also be on the lookout for potential warning signs, especially if the salesperson says anything like: • “We’re from your current water heater provider, utility or local municipality.” • “Government regulations say your plastic venting system for your water heater needs to be replaced due to safety reasons.” • “Our water heaters are more efficient than the one you have in your home.” • “We can replace your old water heater free of charge.” • “We need to see your current bill.” Water heater fraud got your blood boiling? Some door-to-door water heater sales tactics have become a growing nuisance for consumers and is nearing the top of homeowner complaints. Many consumers are unaware that organizations such as Enbridge, Direct Energy and other government agencies do not promote the exchange of water heaters door-to-door, and as a result, are entering into contracts with salespeople claiming to be from such organizations. If someone does come to your door to service your water heater without an appointment, they very likely are not from your current water heater provider and are there to try to get you to sign a new contract. “Water heater fraud can happen at any time to anyone,” said Barry Zeidenberg, Director of Marketing with EnerCare Inc., a leading provider of energy efficient products and water heater rentals. “When speaking to a salesperson at your door, there can be much confusion about what they are actually offering you and what you are getting yourself locked into by signing a contract.”

EnerCare urges homeowners who hear any of these lines to be wary of entering into any agreement with the individual. If you are still unsure about whether the person you are dealing with is trustworthy, be sure to ask them for identification and don’t be afraid to call your current provider for a second opinion. For more information about aggressive door-to-door water heater sales tactics and additional ways to protect yourself, visit www. EnerCare.ca/KnowYourRights.

The best way to reduce bites is to use an insect repellent when spending time outdoors in mosquito-infested areas. Unfortunately not everyone takes these precautions. According to a survey conducted by Harvard University for the Harvard School of Public Health Project on the Public and Biological Security, 45 percent of adults in the United States did not take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. Some theorize that it’s because some older repellents with DEET are greasy and have an unpleasant odour, so people don’t like to use them. Many people don’t realize there are new odourless and non-greasy products on the market today that make taking precautions against bug bites much easier. In fact, Avon, the creators of the iconic Skin So Soft product line, launched a new bug repellent in Canada last year – Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Icaridin – that provides strong and dependable repellency against mosquitoes for up to five hours and deer ticks for up to seven hours. Its key repelling agent, Icaridin, is an effective alternative ingredient to DEET. It has a pleasant scent, is non-greasy and has a light, clean feel when applied. Icaridin has been used worldwide since 1998, and is one of the best selling active ingredients contained in insect repellent products in Europe. In the U.S., Icardian is known as Picaridin. The Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Picaridin has offered protection in the U.S. for those wanting to enjoy outdoor activities without the nuisance and concerns of bug bites since 2006. It is now available in Canada through Avon Independent Sales Representatives. More information can be found at www. avon.ca.

Admire and save the honey bee (NC)—”If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live,” said Albert Einstein. Did the physicist predict all those years ago the precarious situation we are potentially facing in years to come? With the exception of butterflies (admired for their pretty wings), most of us simply shoo away bees and flies. But the truth is that these pollinators are the unsung heroes in native ecosystems and agricultural production, says Sheila Colla of the non-profit organization Pollinator Partnership Canada (PPC). “But in recent years, steep declines of these creatures in Canada is of concern since bees pollinate one-third of the food we eat.” For those wondering what can be done before these declines impact our food supply, we can look to programs developed to preserve bee health. Last year, the “Wild for Bees” program—a partnership between natural personal care company Burt’s Bees and PPC— raised more than $22,000 for bee conservation. Now in its second year, Wild for Bees has once again enlisted Canadian designer Jenny Bird to create a limited-edition jewelry collection.

Available starting May 2013, the “Wild for Bees” jewelry ($24.99 each) will be sold in stores including The Bay and online at www.jennybird. shopify.com and www.burtsbees.ca, with all of the proceeds going to PPC. This year, the collection consists of a bee-charm friendship bracelet and bee stud earrings. Bird used black and gold (a classic combination for the designer) and for the bracelet, she incorporated cobalt blue by braiding it into the gold-plated chain.

Start a vegetable garden. You help the honey bee while also benefiting from fresh produce for yourself.

“We plan to surpass last year both in terms of funds raised and awareness,” says Sarah Au of Burt’s Bees of the “Wild for Bees” program. “Bees aren’t just part of our name, they’re a part of the company’s history, culture and all of our futures, too, and together with Bird, we hope to spark some change.” That change she refers to includes growing PPC’s nationwide at-risk pollinator recovery initiatives with Wildlife Preservation Canada, and increasing public awareness to the plight of pollinators. “Also, the money raised will go directly to help save bees, such as the fuzzy Rusty-patched Bumblebee, from extinction,” says Colla.

Embrace bees and give them a “home.” Keen and have some outdoor space? Consider putting up a bee condo or other nesting material for these pollinators.

And the time to act is now. “The decline we’re experiencing in pollinators has already had an impact on all of our lives: Have a look the next time you’re at the grocery store and you may notice that the price of honey has risen. In addition, the price for growers to rent honey bees to pollinate food crops has also risen,” says Colla. Furthermore, “many wildflowers in nature have been found to be pollen-limited,” she says. “This means they have not received enough pollen to produce enough seeds to ensure the next generation.” A study published in journalTK in yearTK has found that spring wildflowers in particular are at risk—they’re showing decreasing in pollination over time. What you can do to help the honey bee Grow flowers in your outdoor space, whether it’s in your garden or in containers on a balcony.

Limit your pesticide use. The excessive use of chemicals is one of the factors contributing to the decline in bee populations. Support organic agriculture. Shop at farmers markets to support local growers.

Spread the word about the plight of the bee. Wear your limited-edition Jenny Bird “Wild for Bees” jewelry and help raise awareness about bees and the crucial role they play in our lives. Stacked onto your wrist with the rest of your arm party, perhaps the jewelry can act as a reminder to not fear the next bee you see collecting pollen from a summer blossom. “Instead, remember that without them life as we know it would be very different,” says Sheila Colla of Pollinator Partnership Canada.
