Thanks to everyone who filled out a Knowledge survey. The results and winner of our prize draw are on page 9. It was good to see 78% of respondees said the Knowledge made them feel part of the community – and no-one said it didn’t. With this in mind – it’s even more important to us to keep your newsletter going to help serve the local area. Our funding from Bristol City Council has been cut from March 2017 - but we are working on a business plan to make sure The Knowledge will continue to be an important part of Knowle West. We’ve reduced to four issues this financial year– so the next newsletter will be out at the beginning of February. There’s plenty happening in this edition with plans submitted by Bristol Grammar School for a new school in Knowle and a petition for a supermarket in Knowle West p 3. It was good to see so many people in the community coming together at Knowle West Fest p 6 and there are plenty of local achievements to celebrate – from the recent Sound of Music production featured on the front cover - to the Our Time group becoming Health Champions p 11. Wishing everyone a very happy festive season and we’ll see you in the New Year.

City of Bristol College closes Filwood site City of Bristol College closed its site on Filwood Broadway at the end of September. The site had provided support for adults in the community – with the emphasis on getting people into work or further study. A spokesperson for City of Bristol College said the decision had been “based on our future curriculum plans and the strategic direction of the college.” She said: “We continuously review our curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of our local communities and with our South Bristol Skills Academy located on the doorstep of the Filwood Broadway Centre, it was decided to focus on the curriculum delivery at this centre…” www.knowlewest.co.uk
Mental health service
celebrates first anniversary By Community Reporter Kerrie Nicholson A service which works to improve mental health celebrated its first anniversary in Filwood in September with a barbecue. Bristol Mental Health’s Assertive Contact and Engagement Service (ACE) moved its South Bristol hub to Filwood Community Centre last year – where its users are “people “not already engaged in services who struggle to get the support they need.” The service also provides training for organisations and groups to raise awareness on how to support people experiencing poor mental health. ACE Engagement Worker Ben Cheney says: “The barbecue was to

celebrate the achievements of our clients over the past year and to thank all those local people who have extended the hand of friendship to us since we opened our offices in Filwood…It’s been fantastic and we have found Knowle to be a friendly area with a strong identity and sense of community… “We want our hub at Filwood Community Centre to be a beacon of hope to those people who are struggling on their own with mental health issues.” For more information about ACE call 0117 239 8969, from 8am – 8pm Monday to Friday or drop into Filwood Community Centre in Barnstaple Road on Wednesdays, 2 – 4pm. www.knowlewest.co.uk

Knowle DGE recognised for supporting learning through Nurture. Knowle DGE Learning Centre has been presented with a national award by the Lord Mayor of Bristol for its use of nurture to support children. The school, that educates pupils from across the city aged five to 18 with social, emotional and complex needs, developed its own nurture room to help children who found being in the classroom challenging at times. It aims to overcome barriers to learning, which some children experience in a formal classroom, by recreating a welcoming home environment. Knowle DGE is the only special school in the South West to receive the Marjorie Boxall Quality Mark Award from the Nurture Group Network. Cllr Jeff Lovell, Bristol’s Lord Mayor, said: “…I’d like to congratulate all the teachers and developers who helped to make this happen and hope that children will continue to learn and develop in this facility for years to come.” www.knowlewest.co.uk Staff and pupils at Knowle DGE with their award

News New school planned for Knowle Plans for a new free school in Knowle have been put forward by Bristol Grammar School. The proposed school would offer education for over 1,000 children aged four -16 and provide a non-selective community school for Knowle by September 2019. Headmaster of the independent Bristol Grammar School (BGS), Rod MacKinnon, confirmed an application was submitted to the Department for Education on 28 September and they would learn if it had been successful in Spring 2017. At a meeting at Redcatch Community Centre on 23 September, Mr MacKinnon spoke to around 80 attendees about the plans. Most were in favour – and learned no site had been identified and admissions would
Bus 51 will continue despite attacks A local bus service saved after a public campaign was temporarily taken off the road recently after a series of attacks. But Wessex bus company which took over the 51 on September 4 after it was axed by First says it will continue to run the service. There was an outcry when First announced at the beginning of August it was withdrawing the service which provides a link between the city centre and Hengrove via Broadwalk as it was “loss making” and there “were ongoing issues with the punctuality and reliability of buses.” The company said it was revising the 50 route to compensate.
The latest attack as the bus drove through Knowle on September 20 saw the windscreen being smashed by a catapult. A spokesperson for Wessex told the Knowledge: “We occasionally experience anti-social behavior and where appropriate we suspend services tem-
be for those closest to the school. There would be two forms of entry in the primary school – around 60 places - and six in the secondary school – around 180 places. If the application is successful, the new school will be Government-funded and run separately from BGS. But the fee-paying school will work in partnership with it “sharing new innovations and ideas.” BGS Headmaster Rod MacKinnon told The Knowledge these were “exciting times for those working in education in Bristol.” He said: “One thing that has become clear over my years of professional experience is that when people work collaboratively everyone benefits and we can achieve great things. “If everyone, state and independent, works in partnership to raise standards for all, it will be a powerful engine for continued improvement here in Bristol.” Bristol South MP Karin Smyth said the news of the new school had come as a shock to many people. porarily while we work with local police to resolve the situation. We take the safety of our passengers as a priority as we do the needs of our travelling public and have no plans to withdraw services.” www.knowlewest.co.uk
Petition for supermarket in Knowle West Local people are being urged to sign a petition to encourage a supermarket to move into Knowle West. The petition has been started by a group of local residents and organisations wanting to see positive change to the area. Helen Bailey from Knowle West Future said: “With more homes going to be built in our area – Knowle West Future wants to make sure that there are sufficient shops to support existing residents and the additional people. A supermarket would add to the range of shops already in our area.” The group needs over 1,000 signatures and is urging residents to give their support - so any potential supermarket and the council will “see how important local people think this is”. A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “In response to requests from members of the public, the council identified a potential site for a supermarket in Filwood Broadway. “Work was then carried out with a specialist consultancy firm to target potential operators to build and run the

In a statement she said: “…In my view any plan to change local schooling provision must place at its heart the involvement of the affected communities and their representatives… any large scale educational development should be part of wider regeneration plans for the area. “So these decisions should not be rushed, especially as in this case it is far from clear exactly where this proposed new school might be located.” To be kept up-to-date about the progress of the plans email newschoolforknowle@bgs.bristol.sch.uk Full story: www.knowlewest.co.uk

What is the local Neighbourhood Partnership?
The Neighbourhood Partnership (NP) for Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill is a local decision-making group that delivers positive activities for the Partnership area. These activities are written into a local Neighbourhood Partnership plan agreed by local residents, Bristol City Council and other agencies such as the police. The NP also manages a small grants fund to support the work of local community groups and agencies delivering services across the Partnership area. Wellbeing Fund
At the September meeting of the NP, 19 projects received funding. The projects ranged from a community festival in Windmill Hill, a Redcatch Park project in Knowle and financial support for the new café in Filwood Community Centre. The next round of wellbeing funding closes on Friday 11 November. For more details go to: www.bristol.gov.uk/ npwellbeinggrants
Front gardens tidy up
As a result of concerns from local residents - council officers have been busy carrying out enforcement action against householders who have allowed waste to build up in their front gardens. The worst properties have been targeted in Ilminster Avenue and Newquay Road. A number of other roads have been highlighted for future action, thanks to the feedback from residents at local community meetings such as the Neighbourhood Forum. For more information on the next meetings go to: www.bristol.gov.uk/ neighbourhoodpartnerships. If you are aware of gardens that have a large build-up of rubbish, or know of other waste problems in the area, please report it directly on the council website: www.bristol.gov.uk
Over the past few months the Partnership has been talking to local people and working with agencies such as Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI) about the victims of recent race hate crimes. Through these conversations, a lot of different ideas have been put forward around ways of promoting Knowle West as a neighbourhood that welcomes people from different backgrounds, whether those differences are based on race, disability status, sexual orientation etc. Suggestions across the NP include more street parties and neighbours welcoming new people moving to the area – as well as more information in schools and across the neighbourhood about the impact of hate crimes on families and individuals. If anyone has any ideas about what more we can do together to promote neighbourliness, or if you wish to be put in touch with other local people taking these suggestions forward, please contact Andrew on 0117 922 4446 or email andrew.mclean@ bristol.gov.uk

Police crack down on drug dealing in South Bristol Police have been working across South Bristol to crack down on drug dealing. A police spokesperson said five people were arrested, four cars known to be used to deal drugs taken off the streets and suspected stolen property, cocaine and cannabis as well as several weapons seized - as part of work to “reduce the harm caused by drugs”. In Filwood, following a warrant at a house on Bantry Road, cannabis with a street value of around £1,000 was seized as well as hundreds of pounds worth of property, including expensive coats believed to have been taken as part of a recent burglary at a garden centre. Also found at the house were a knuckle duster, taser and crossbow as well as throwing knives.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs and burglary. Neighbourhood beat manager for Hartcliffe PC Richard Jeffery said: “…Please keep the information coming so we can take action like this to reduce the harm these people are causing to our communities.”
Anyone with information about people they believe to be dealing drugs should report their suspicions to the police at https:// www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/ contact-us/tell-us-something/ or on the non-emergency number 101. Knowle West Fest – community comes together
By Community Reporter Rianna Newman
R
ain didn’t dampen spirits – as the community came together to celebrate the second annual Knowle West Fest at the end of the summer. Local people flocked to Filwood Community Centre for an afternoon of fun, ranging from musical performances and health demonstrations to a variety of stalls. Run by Knowle West Together, a group of local organisations working with residents to improve the area the festival is a celebration of different ages, cultures and talents across the area. Chief executive of re:work, Vicky Beckwith, who coordinated the event, says: “There were a lot of different positives; being able to show solidarity in the face of the recent hate crimes was a big one, but also showcasing local talent from tap dancing to musicians…and just being able to enjoy time with friends and neighbours!”
A popular part of the day was the release of 200 biodegradeable balloons by Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees - to launch the Knowle West Against Racism campaign in support of local victims and their families. Mr Rees said: “It’s amazing for people to come out and make a statement. People have come together today and enjoyed themselves, and you can’t put a value on that...” He also added his handprint to the mural set up by Avon and Somerset Police to represent a community united against hate crime. A ‘health zone’ included quizzes, free pedometers and health checks as well as a planting station run by Knowle West Children’s Centre (KWCC) to encourage children to
6
grow their own food - alongside a recently published healthy cook book. A large board covered in postit notes gave people the chance to write about things they had done to improve their health. The theme continued across the whole event with a bike-powered fruit smoothie machine run by re:work in the main hall. Performances by young people from XLR at Knowle West Media Centre alongside other local talent took place on an outdoor stage and inside the hall throughout the day, ending with the Knowle West Arts Promotion Group. Stalls sold home made cakes, produce and crafts and there were also a range of local groups showcasing their activities – from fishing to history as well as health and support services. Another attraction for families was the animal handling area with the Wriggly Roadshow - where people could hold different creatures including a snake, blue-tongued skink and
baby hedgehogs. Hotly anticipated was the announcement of the six winners of the Knowle West Front Gardens Competition - from over 100 nominations. They received either a £50 voucher or time from re:work spent on their garden. (See Page 5 for a list of competition winners).
Lee Clarke (33) from Inns Court said of the day: “It’s been brilliant, there’s something for everyone... I’ve enjoyed everything, music, the café, the stage talent and all the different things that are happening in the area - and most of all the little children performing.” And Lisa Herbert (44) from Filwood who came with her son and grandson to the event. said: “They definitely need more things like this – something fun for the children and to get people to get to know each other...”

ormer boxer Bob Fisher returned from two weeks in Brazil this September - presenting medals to winning athletes in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. As a member of the Paralympic Order, Bob (69), was invited to hand out medals in eight ceremonies, including the Women’s 100m, table tennis and football.
The lifelong Knowle West resident says he felt “privileged” to have the chance to take part. “To go to the opening and closing ceremonies and actually be involved is superb. I feel very honoured and grateful the opportunity was there.”
Local coach recognised for disability football achievements By Community Reporter Helen Prince While the UK has shone at the Paralympics – a Knowle West football coach has been awarded Somerset FA Disability Coach of the Year. Daniel Kingdon (31), who has lived in Filwood all his life, has also been chosen to be the new Chairman of the Somerset FA Ability Counts League. When Daniel started coaching disabled adults in 2012 there were only up to five players at The Park Knowle FC – now with his involvement there are over 40. And the club’s teams have also done well this year – with leagues 1 and 4 coming top, league 3 runner up and league 2 finishing third. Daniel says: “The reason I enjoy coaching disability football is the energy and enthusiasm every player shows when training. They listen to what instructions you give them …

The games in Rio de Janeiro saw 159 countries and over 4,000 athletes competing in 22 sports - the second most attended Paralympics in history. Bob says his highlight was “presenting the gold medal to Britain’s Georgina Hermitage” - who set a world record by winning the Women’s T37 100m in 13.3 seconds. He was made a recipient of the Paralympic Order in 2008 after spending over 30 years volunteering as an official at the games. He was also a member of the coaching team for Great Britain at the Paralympics in New York in 1984 and Seoul in 1988. Bob’s involvement in sport began at Connaught Road School where he took up boxing, later competing professionally. He became a manager of Whitchurch Sports Centre where he first started coaching disabled sports. His work promoting football saw him become Chairperson for the Football 7-a-Side Committee of the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA). He says: “I’ve always appreciated the ability of people with disabilities. That’s why I’ve been involved over the years. and try their very best, no matter how hard it is to execute…” And he thinks the increased participation is down to word of mouth from team members. As Chairman, Daniel keeps the Somerset FA Ability Counts League running, as well as arranging fixtures and tournaments. He also hopes to expand the club further. “I would also like to add a women’s disability league and youth would be great as everyone has the right to play, no matter what ability.” The Park Knowle FC Disability Team meets Fridays, 5 – 6pm and plays in monthly tournaments. There is an extra session on Saturdays from 10.30am – 12 noon. Meet the Green Business Park’s new Enterprise Support Officer By Community Reporter Helen Prince Filwood Green Business Park has recently welcomed Sarah Classick as its new Enterprise Support Officer – following the departure of Business Manager Iwona Tempowski in June. Opened in 2015, the award-winning business park provides workshop and office space for small to medium businesses with an environmental ethos.
Sarah runs the front of house operations and is the first point of contact with tenants if they have any issues with the building. She says: “I’ve really enjoyed working here so far, it’s been great working with tenants like Knowle West Media Centre (The Factory) …and I’m really looking forward to the future.” With already 65% occupancy, Sarah works closely with the tenants – from viewing potential occupants, to setting up their furniture and internet when they have moved in. She plans to further market the business park - so it becomes a wellknown environmental hub of Knowle West. She says: “We still get people who are in the area but they drive past it every day and never actually realise its there. So I’d really like this place to be a point where people everywhere know where it is, and what facilities we have…” Full story: www.knowlewest.co.uk

Herbs meet history – two Local Stories Leaflets >> Newsletters >> Brochures Mailing >> Folders >> Books new >> gardens at The Park
Story and picture by Community Reporter Helen Prince
www.knowlewest.co.uk
A local group has created two historic gardens - right in the heart of Knowle West. Members of Filwood Chase History Society are developing two plots at The Park in Daventry Road. Their ‘Dig for Victory Garden’ is inspired by vegetable patches grown in the Second World War to help food supplies – and a herb garden reminiscent of ancient medicinal healing. Local resident and History Society member Jim Smith explains: “We do still remember the war, but we forget the privation people went through and having this Dig for Victory garden, and explaining why it’s here will remind people of the hardship others in the past went through.” The garden includes cabbages, potatoes and mint as well as tomatoes and rhubarb – and Jim hopes to introduce leeks and turnips later in the year. Anyone is welcome to the produce - with surplus food sold at reception and all proceeds going back into The Park.
The medicinal herb garden is to highlight ancient practices. Plants so far include hypericum, which can be used for depression, angelica a remedy for coughs and colds and rosemary which can help relieve anxiety and boost the immune system. Once the garden is finished, the History Society plans to open the patch to any local people who wish to learn about the herbs, including groups and schools. Chair Ivor Grimsted says: “We want to show the plants used… from way back in Roman times for cooking and medication which links to our research. We will be putting display boards around the walls to describe what they were used for.” For more information or to join Filwood Chase History Society contact Ivor on 0785 676 9285 or email fiwoodchase@gmail.com Full story: www.knowlewest.co.uk

Pressure stations set up around the city in September included Badham Pharmacy on Filwood Broadway – which is continuing to provide blood pressure checks for residents. In South Bristol around 20,489 people are living with high blood pressure - one of the main risk factors for premature death, kidney disease and dementia - and a leading cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) including coronary heart disease and stroke. Local statistics from Badham Pharmacy during the campaign showed 80% of those checked had high readings and 75% of those were male. Some 50% of those tested with high readings were aged 16-44 and 37% aged 45-74. No-one knew their readings before being tested. Advanced Health Improvement Practitioner – Adults (Lifestyle) for Public Health Bristol, Jess Waithe, says every adult should “know their numbers” and have their blood pressure checked at least every five years. She explains: “…High blood pressure has no symptoms, those who may be at risk may not know… and the only way to know is to have it checked…”
Mums at local support group become Health Champions Picture and story by Community Reporter Rianna Newman Members of a Knowle West support group have officially been declared Health Champions. Our Time, which meets weekly at Ilminster Avenue Specialist Nursery School, started as a domestic violence support group and is now open for parents to meet and socialise with their children. It is run by two local mums, friends Becky Lane (34) and Keisha Cooper (29) - who say the group was inspired to take the qualification to “help people to make small changes which, in the long run, will improve their health.” Our Time members began a fiveweek course in the summer learning about public health and have now passed the Level 2 qualification, which included an exam. Health Champions are volunteers who, with training and support, help transform health and wellbeing in their communities. Becky explains: “We will be the first (point of) contact for people to
express their health issues so we can then try and signpost them to the right kind of help. As a group we aim to get involved in local health campaigns to promote healthy living too.” The course was led by Carl Morrison, Advanced Health Improvement Practitioner for Bristol City Council. He says: “… Our Health Champions provide valuable help by supporting Public Health priorities, including smoking, alcohol, exercise, mental health, dementia, NHS health checks and raising cancer awareness.” Our Time meets every Wednesday during term time at Ilminster Avenue Specialist Nursery School and Children’s Centre, from 9-11am. Making changes for health By Health Improvements Project Manager Gill Brookman I bumped into Jane the other day, I hadn’t seen her for a few months and was amazed at how well she was looking... this is her story. Jane and Rich’s Story: “Rich and I both had health warnings, his blood pressure was very high and I was on the borderline of having type two diabetes. “We decided we needed to do something. The main things we changed were to have smaller meals, to have meals at regular times, and to stop snacking, which was made much easier when I stopped doing night shifts! “ I use the traffic light labelling on foods, so for example we looked at two different types of ham and chose the one that had the fewest red lights. We eat lots more vegetables and less meat… “We’re also more active, walking and doing the garden, I’m planning to get my bike out to cycle to work when the weather is better. “We do sometimes have ‘piggy weekends’ but try to make sure the burgers and chips are treats not everyday food. “The result is …I’ve lost a stone! I feel much better, I’m not bloated, I’ve got more energy and I’m less tired, Rich has also lost weight and his blood pressure is down.” For help with lifestyle changes contact Health Improvement Advisor Shaun Hawkins on 0787 681 4597. NCS
This summer Youth Moves took 94 Young People from all over south Bristol on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. These young people gave up four weeks of their summer and delivered over 3,000 hours of volunteering and managed to raise over £2,000 for local charities. NCS is broken down into three phases: Phase 1 - Activity Residential, Phase 2 - Local Residential, Phase 3 - Social Action. Phase 1 consists of teamwork, communication and building confidence, while staying away in Bridgewater doing different activities such as mountain biking, high ropes and kayaking. Phase 2 is more about independence and learning about the community. We stay away at University of the West of England (UWE) and young people learn about independent living, budgeting and loads of different workshops trying to breakdown stereotypes. Phase 3 is all about social action. Social action is all about working alongside a charity and their users to help that charity how the charity wishes. We celebrated all of the young people’s achievements at an event held at Ashton Gate Stadium and attended by over 250 people - including our MP Karin Smyth and The Lord Mayor of Bristol. If you are 15-17 years old then NCS is for you - find out more at www.ncswest.co.uk
