Simon’s cycling to Land’s End for charity
Local resident Simon Foster will be setting off on a gruelling bike ride from Filwood Community Centre to Land’s End in June – to raise money for Cancer Research.
He will be cycling 235 miles in eight days on his own - pulling a bike trailer containing his tent, sleeping bag and bike kit as well as food and essential supplies.
The father of seven decided to take up the challenge after “seeing a lot of family members and friends diagnosed with or dying from cancer”.
Simon (37) completed the 200 mile September Challenge for Cancer Research last year - and shaved his head for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2017.
He has been preparing for this year’s fundraiser by “going to the gym and taking long bike rides through the countryside”. He says: “The difficulty depends on the wind direction and the heat – if you get a hot June it can be a very long day as there are a lot of hills and no support team. "A worse scenario is a very wet day and you have to keep riding.”
The first thing he will do when he reaches his destination is “call my seven kids and then friends and family and tell them that I have completed my challenge”.
“I will feel a sense of achievement at the end – and I just want to raise as much money as I can.”
Simon will be leaving Filwood Community Centre on 6 June at 10am and hopes to arrive at Land’s End at 10am on 13 June. To sponsor him visit: https://fun draise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/ simons-giving-page-495
A young Knowle West couple have launched a new karate and kickboxing club at Inns Court – to “give something back to the community.”
Les Downs (18) and his girlfriend Lauren Parry (20) are both blackbelts
and have won dozens of medals over the years, including a number of golds at the World Championships and British Open.
They started the Bristol Sport Karate and Kickboxing Club (BSKC) at Inns Court Community and Family Centre in January – running twice-weekly sessions for children and adults.
Les first took up karate at the age of 11 - scooping gold in his first competition - followed by kickboxing a year later.
He explains: “My parents thought it would be a good idea to take up a sport, I was small and skinny – so they thought it would be good for me to learn self defence…”
Lauren started kickboxing at 13 as “both her brothers had done it when they were younger” and karate at 16. The pair are eager to promote the benefits of the martial arts – from discipline and self control to improving mental and physical health.
Les says: “…We wanted to start the club to give something back to the community - to make everyone happier and give a place for children to meet.”
BSKC runs at Inns Court Centre Monday and Thursday evenings, with three one-hour sessions from 6-9pm for adults and children aged four upwards. For more information call 0792 390 7686. Demand for services at our surgeries is very high again this winter, the same as the hospitals, and we also suffer the same level of sickness as the general population. Please be patient when trying to access our services.
We are talking to the Patient Group and our telecoms provider to introduce a new cloud-based telephone system which will be better for patients and make it easier for us to cope with staff sickness.
A new GP started with us at the end of January at our Malago site. We are also currently recruiting additional GPs and nurses along with receptionists to work at our various sites. Carers’ Assessments Carers Support Centre is offering assessments which look at the impact caring has on people’s life and health. This often leads to a small one-off payment, to give carers the chance to take a short break or do something for their own wellbeing.
To find out more ring CarersLine: 0117 965 2200, on Monday to Thursday 10am–1pm and Mondays 2–4pm or email carersline@carerssupportcentre. org.uk Visit www.carerssupportcentre.org.uk Could you be an ACE Neighbour? Seeking older people for the ACE Neighbours project in Filwood!
We hold regular education afternoons for all our staff every six weeks. To facilitate this training we close our doors for a few hours but keep our phones on. Bringing our teams together really helps us share learning which benefits our patients.
We are currently helping the university train medical students and we rely on patient’s goodwill when doing this work. Thank you.

Become a Friend of Filwood Community Centre
By Suzie Davison, Friends of Filwood Officer
“Hi, I’m Suzie and I’m the new Friends of Filwood Officer at Filwood Community Centre – and it’s my job to get members for the place. Members get free access all year round to our Friends of Filwood games sessions in our sports hall – where we have ping pong, pool and table football tables as well as board games for people to play with. The sessions take place on Mondays (3.30 to 6.30pm), Thursdays (3.30 to 6.30pm) and Saturdays (9.30am to 1pm) – and are a great way of keeping the kids (and yourselves) entertained.
In the summer we will also be getting crazy golf in our courtyard – which our members will get to enjoy free of cost. They will also get invited to our yearly membersonly party – the first one of which takes place later in the year and will be a great way to get involved with your community centre while getting to know new people. A bit about me:
I grew up in London, then went to university in Wales where I studied Documentary Photography, and now I live in Bristol. I love photography, and so am keen to make the darkroom at the community centre a thriving space once again. My passion for working in the community, meanwhile, stems from my voluntary work with a charity called See It From Her – where I worked with vulnerable self-identifying women, exploring the use of photography as a tool of empowerment.”

Imagination Funding
Community In Partnership Knowle West, the group which runs Filwood Community Centre, has received £40,000 in Imagination Funding from Bristol City Council. The funding, which will be spent over the next two years, will see a makeover of the community centre reception, a walk of fame on Filwood Broadway as well as the return of the Knowle West Carnival. Springboard springs into action
Springboard has just got funding from Bristol City Council’s Bristol Impact Fund – meaning it can continue for at least another two years.
The personal development programme, which helps people with their wellbeing and IT skills, takes place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (12.30 - 4.30pm) in the community centre’s IT suite.
It’s run by Katie Bruce. She said: “This is a much-needed provision in the area, and I’m delighted that it’s not stopping any time soon.” Email Katie: katie.bruce@ filwoodcentre.org.uk or call her 07582040535 to get involved.

Youth Moves shortlisted for Bristol Young Heroes Awards
Youth Moves are delighted to announce several nominations for the Bristol Young Heroes Awards. The prestigious annual event celebrates the success of young people and youth projects across the city. Now entering its seventh year, the awards see an array of famous faces in the city such as Good Morning Britain's weatherman Alex Beresford, Broadchurch actor Joe Sims, and BBC Radio Bristol's Emma Britton presenting awards throughout the evening. To see a local Knowle-based project in the running is impressive.
Denise Clifford (Youth Moves Lead Youth Worker) said: "We love the Bristol Young Heroes Awards, and have attended every year since it started. To see more of our young people put forward this year is great.
“We have four 16-year-olds being recognised; Elliot Carr shortlisted for the Super Hero award, and Franklyn Bateman, Rowena Brown, and Shae-Ann Hudson for the Learning Hero award.
“We are particularly proud to be shortlisted as Team of the Year. Being rewarded for all the hard work the staff do throughout the year across South Bristol is very satisfying. We have won two High Sheriff awards before, so if we can add this to title to that it will
be brilliant. But to be honest we are just pleased to receive the nomination, and happy that people value what we do." The Bristol Young Heroes had a Nominee's Reception at City Hall on 3 Feb, and each nominee receives free bus travel, a Cabot Circus shopping voucher, free suit hire and hair styling, as well as a goodie bag full of epic gifts on the night.
