RESPECT IN OUR COMMUNITY Anita Pearce and Margaret Rawlins were both recognised for the work they do in our community, at the RESPECT Communities event held at Westminster, London 20/6/07. FLORENCE BROWN FIX-UP
The Florence Brown Community School in Leinster Avenue is proud to show off its improved school entrance to the community.
This is thanks to the Prince's Trust XL Club at the school. They successfully bid for a National Lottery Big Boost Grant. This money enabled them to create a mosaic sign (pictured left) with Mosaic Madness. Then they painted tired woodwork and planted some shrubs. Students, staff and visitors now experience a much brighter entrance as they enter the school!

Community news YOUR LETTERS Every time I go to the shops in Marshall Walk or to the Mede Centre all you can see is groups of youths hanging around waiting for their drug delivery. This is no fun for people like me; I am disabled and find it very difficult at times to get around them all. Not only that but the Inns Court Residents Association (ICRA) cleaned up the area and had a seat installed along with railings for people to sit and meet up with others. This has become a meeting place for a lot of youths who leave it littered with rubbish. Yes there are CCTV cameras around but this does not deter them. At the last ICRA meeting we spoke to the council about this area but so far nothing has been done. The police are not able to do much, but move them on to another area to cause problems. Something must be done about this for the sake of the local residents and their children. Inns Court resident (name and address supplied)
PCSO Siful Ullah, and resident Ann Smith keep a check on all the fun!
The other day I was walking up Connaught Road, when I looked down Padstow Road and saw the Salvation Army. In all the 50 years I’ve lived here I’d never once been inside…so I went in. They were just finishing their coffee morning as I went in. Someone came straight over to me and welcomed me. I thought, “What a nice place, friendly warm and clean.” They were busy cooking dinner, and there were a lot of people there, men, women, and children of all ages. They help everyone, no-one’s turned away. I was surprised at all the things they have going on. I was given a leaflet. I should just like to say thank you to them for all they do and keep up the good work!
Traders at Leinster Ave (“Jarmans” as we call it) have had enough. It seems that daytime drunken behavior is proving damaging to their businesses. I am even told of elderly shoppers being harassed. Of course Broadbury Rd Police station is not exactly miles away! But I am sure that a lot of antisocial behavior is not reported for fear of recriminations or the waste of valuable Police time. I think the increase in anti-social behaviour at Jarmans could have something to do with the installation of cameras at Filwood Broadway. Perhaps then, trouble is moving to areas with less surveillance. Maybe another camera might be the answer?

A family fun day was held at Filwood Community Centre in June. We had a variety of activities. Everyone had an enjoyable day. There was designing plant pots, cooking in the kitchen, arts and crafts, penalty shoot out, face painting, smoking advice and tea and cakes. There was some amazing singing and dancing. I hope this becomes a tradition in Knowle West!

A FUN DAY AT FILWOOD
Another problem: Being a busy shopping precinct, why are there no litter bins outside Jarmans shops for litter? An issue that was raised before, over a year ago, but the traders say they are still waiting for bins to materialise. Hopefully I will have brought your attention to these local problems: raising awareness about the changes we are going through in Knowle West. WORDS Andrea Rea
Year 5 pupils from eight schools in Knowle & Hengrove made their way to The Park to take part in a careers conference this June, designed to raise aspirations and awareness of a range of different professions. Armed with a digital camera the children met professionals from health, police, education, media and Blue Watch Bedminster Fire Service and had a look around a fire engine. In the afternoon children downloaded the photographs they had taken, and made them into postcards to be displayed in their schools. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the day and the pupils who participated and provided feedback to make next year’s event even bigger and better. tel: 0117 377 2667 email: andrea.rea@bristol.gov.uk

Green is the new Black SUMMER GARDENING
CARBON MAKEOVER
WORDS Lesley Belgium local resident High summer, or it should be by now! Your flower garden, pots and hanging-baskets should be a sweet- smelling riot of colour; but don’t forget to water and remove dead blooms to encourage new flowers. How about your vegetables? If you started early, many of your crops will soon be ready to harvest (later sowings will ripen in September/ October). Early peas, new potatoes and baby carrots will be jostling with spring onions, beetroot and other salads for space on your dinner-plate. All home-grown, lovely! But don’t think that the best is over - or still growing in your plot - how about sowing for Autumn and beyond? Early peas, spinach and carrots can be sown now to harvest from October. Courgettes, butternut squash and pumpkins can be grown from young plants (ready now in Garden Centres) and many salads can be grown from seed in just six or eight weeks. How about planting some cabbage to provide you with lovely spring greens? It’s also time to think about what spring bulbs to grow, and plan where, or even to plant pots of hyacinths to be ready for Christmas Happy Harvesting!

WORDS Environmental programmes,
KW Media Centre
We’ve just received some funding to develop a project to help tackle climate change across the community, from this August until December 2008. We will support 100 homes in Knowle West to reduce the carbon emissions coming from everyday activities. We will work on six different themes; energy reduction, waste reduction, healthy living, local food, travelling smarter and getting more enjoyment out of local open spaces and wildlife. We are looking for households to take part across the 6 zones of the new “Community In Partnership.” So do you want to be part of this project? You will be supported by a project leader and local champions to take up the challenge and you will be given help to get started and have access to on-line information as well as a carbon passbook to record your activities.
We will also be holding local events and campaigns that everyone can get involved in. We are currently seeking ten people with an interest in environmental issues to run campaigns during the project. So have you got an idea that could help Knowle West to go green? Let us know about it. The FREE Knowle West Food Festival will take place on Saturday 29th September from 10am to 4pm on Filwood Broadway. There will be a village show where you can enter your produce and crafts, an entertainment area, cooking and growing demonstrations and lots of information about what's going on around food in Knowle West. So come along and have some fun! If you want to get involved in either of these projects contact Emily Nicholson: tel: 0 1 1 7 9 0 3 0 4 4 4 email: e m i l y @ k w m c . c o . u k
RAIN WATER HARVESTING WORDS Peter Hamar DCF
The Disabled Christian Fellowship (DCF) Adult Day Centre on Ruthven Road has installed a number of water butts to collect rainwater from their roof to water their new gardens and allotments. Altogether they will be able to store over 2,500 litres of water at any one time and keep replenishing it during the summer.
4
As rainfall becomes less easy to determine, storing water is one way to keep ahead of the game and become more self-sufficient. It also helps to save water and contributes to saving carbon dioxide emissions at the same time (processing water to make it-clean enough to drink uses lots of energy). And they will have saved £3 on their water bills for each replenishment!

NORTHERN SLOPES IMPROVEMENT PROJECT ECO-BUILD UPDATE WORDS Miles Ford KWMC
WORDS Oliver Roberts, Bristol Parks
Glyn Vale and Wedmore Vale (the Bommie) commonly termed as the Northern Slopes, are due for some improvement works as part of the Neighbourhood Renewal funded Parks Improvement Programme. The project has been working with a group of local residents called the Northern Slopes Initiative to develop a design based on two previous local consultations. The completed design will outline a long-term vision for the Slopes. Prioritised works to improve access and increase seating opportunities are programmed to start this autumn. The project is combining forces with the Allotment Investment Programme to also include
improvement works on four adjoining allotment sites. Nature in the City, has been organising community nature based outreach activities and recently, with Living Rivers and Avon Wildlife Trust, took Connaught Primary School pupils onto the Slopes. They followed an ancient pipe route from the Northern Slopes to Victoria Park and took part in bug hunting, tree identification and looking at the colours of nature. The next free event is “Bats on the Bommie” on Thursday 6th Sept, meeting at 7:30pm by St Barnabas Church on Daventry Rd. POEM
Progress on the new Knowle West Media Centre eco build is going well. On Monday June 25th, the first straw panels were fixed to the building, forming the outer walls. 43 straw bale panels have been built on a farm in Failand. Local sponsors such as Bristol City Council, Aardman and Avon Fire & Rescue have built panels along with local community groups and staff of KWMC. The concrete core of the building has been completed and the finish is excellent. Over the next few weeks, we will see the outer walls completed and the windows and roof go on. All exciting stuff!
SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF KNOWLE WEST POEM Mark le Leivre local resident The boys are hanging round the shops, I think the neighbours might call the cops, The girls chew their fingertips and talk about hair, And a mother shouts at her kids and starts to swear. The collerless black dog crosses the road, The pigeons peck at the crust like it was gold, A cars tyres screech and there‘s the sound of a siren, The rubbish goes nowhere and it’s still piling. It’s school closing time and there’s the sound of laughter, There’s a party to go to and then after, Homework and playstation in that order, ‘Cause tommorrow’s a school day and I’ll be a bit older. A really hot day and the pigeons are flying, Haven’t seen the black dog I guess that he’s hiding, The streets are quite empty the football is on, The boys and the girls are having some fun.

We have lift off! COMMUNITY IN PARTNERSHIP WORDS

Mandy Shute NM
The elections for the Zone Reps was held on the week of 14th May. We had just under 300 people vote in the election and we were very pleased with this, but hope to build on this in future elections. The first thing that has now been decided (by vote) is our official name: Community In Partnership. Zone Representatives are: Ann Smith, Rose Manning, Margaret Rawlins, Denise Britt. We have 2 vacancies that we hope to fill once the partnership is up and running, and we have had a lot more interest in the last 3 weeks. The first meeting of the partnership took place on 4th June, and was for residents only, to discuss what responsibilities they will have and which statutory and voluntary bodies we will be inviting to sit on the board. There will then be an official launch in September. There will be a monthly meeting of the board and members will need to decide which task groups they would like to attend. The task groups currently are: Community Safety, Local Governance Group for Education, Health & Well-being, Economy (which is run jointly with Hartcliffe and Withywood) Liveability and the Housing and Built Environment Group. For a full report of the election, and meeting timetables and minutes (available from July) you can find it on www.knowlewest.co.uk

JUST THE TICKET Stuck at home with a small amount of cash, like to go somewhere different for a change instead of just staying in? Well then the Mede Sprint could be the answer, with cheap affordable away days to various locations in the Bristol area as well as the usual trips and journeys within the Knowle boundary. Started back in 2003 with money from the Urban Challenge (which runs out in March 2008) the Mede Sprint is still going strong.
So successful, a second bus was needed to meet demand, the buses are totally reliant upon you! More young people are the target for the company, three local schools have used the buses recently to go on a trip to Clifton Zoo. The myth that the Mede Sprint buses are just for the elderly is wrong. So what are you waiting for, give them a call on the number below to find out where they could be taking you and your family this summer. Don’t forget there is wheelchair access. Action Indoor Sports (previously Whitchurch Sports Centre) would like to congratulate the Dark Angels on their success in the recent Hip Hop World Championship. Action Indoor Sports Foundation, which is the charity side of Action Indoor Sports, were pleased to be able to help the Dark Angels when they asked for help with sponsorship. We were able to supply the training shoes and track suits they required. In the future, Action Indoor Sports Foundation will be looking for other projects to support in the local community. Action Indoor Sports is a £75 million per annum business that has been successful on 3 continents over the last 22 years. We have now opened our first UK site at Whitchurch in Bristol. The arena offers a unique opportunity to Bristol and the whole UK to play Action Cricket, Soccer, Netball and Beach Volleyball. In addition to these sports Action Sports also has badminton courts, bowling, and a gym with a newly constructed free weights room. We run soft play each weekday, soccer schools, and fun days in the school holidays.
You can even have parties there for you or your children. You can also take time to relax in the Interaction Bar and try a bite to eat from the Action Restaurant. The best thing of all is that you can play your favourite sport any day regardless of the weather as everything is INDOORS! The Whitchurch arena is the first Action Sports Arena in the UK and is something the communities of South Bristol should be proud of. It will certainly put South Bristol on the map this September when the 2007 Indoor Cricket World Cup will be held at the arena, with 375 players and supporters from 12 countries. Action Indoor Sports Cricket, Netball and Soccer Teams will have the fantastic opportunity to wear the England shirt in toplevel amateur competition against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, with tours taking place at home or abroad on an annual basis. ANONYMOUSLY REPORT CRIMES & ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Residents throughout South Bristol are being encouraged to report crime anonymously through the reporting box scheme. In partnership with Safer Bristol Knowle Safe and The Police, the Reporting Box Scheme, originally in Knowle West, has been expanded to take in Bedminster, Knowle (Broadwalk), Knowle Park and Southville. The scheme is designed to allow residents to report crime and Anti Social Behaviour to the Police without fear of reprisals. The Boxes are located in the following areas and locations; Knowle West including Knowle Safe in Filwood Broadway, The Mede Centre, Inns Court Post Office, The Walk-In Centre, Salcombe Road Area Housing, Melvin Square Post Office; Knowle inc Knowle Park Post Office, Knowle Post Office on Wells Road; Bedminster Road Convenience Store, Victoria Park Post Office and The Southville Centre.
There are forms available at all locations for people to complete and post in the boxes. Police Community Support Officers open the boxes regularly and information is fed back to the police. Good information is needed for police to take forward the reports examples of good information will include, names and addresses of perpetrators, registration number of any vehicle involved, date and time of event and a description of what took place. Residents reporting through the reporting box scheme must bear in mind that if they are reporting the offence anonymously, the police will be unable to feed back any actions taken as a result of the report. COMMUNITY JUSTICE Filwood Community Justice plans to tackle nuisance behaviour Do you see youngsters getting up to mischief and getting away with it? Do you think anti social behaviour is out of hand and nothing appears to be done? The grim reality is that these problems go on all around the country. The Police and Housing deal with the worst cases, but many residents simply don’t bother reporting problems we define as “nuisance” or “harassment”, and in Filwood most of this is caused by youngsters. As a parent of a teenager, I know that they need freedom, they want to hang out and be with their friends. Parents may not see their kids for hours at a time and can be unaware of the havoc they are creating for someone else. Parents can just be at the end of their tether trying to keep control of kids, always telling them “stay out of trouble”.
This is where Community Justice fits in. It works like this: Step 1) A youngster causes upset or distress to someone – perhaps by damaging their property or playing football against their house. Step 2) The victim recognises the child and reports the problem to the community justice circle. Step 3) A circle volunteer visits the parent, explains what has happened and requests a meeting between the parent, child and victim. Step 4) If everyone agrees to meet, the community volunteer guides them through a discussion – why did the child do the asb? How did it make the victim feel? What can be done to repair the harm? This gives the child a chance to THINK about what they do, and the victim the relief of speaking out about what has upset them. Step 5) The child feels embarassed, ashamed, surprised and many other emotions. The victim often feels a connection with the child who has been brave enough to come and speak.
Step 6) Often the meeting results in an agreement that the child will repair something or do something to help the victim. If the child is very young, they apologise. We hope residents will not feel this is a cop out – it’s really hard to face someone you have harmed. With trained volunteers from the estate, we want to respond quickly and efficiently to anti-social behaviour incidents when they occur. We want residents to reclaim dealing with the problems in Filwood, not wait for a policeman who can’t be everywhere at once. VOLUNTEERS WANTED: PEOPLE WITH LOTS OF GOOD SENSE & KIND HEART If you are interested in helping us try something that no one has tried yet in the UK, please call Kathe Jacob on 908 4221
NOVERS PARK LANES GO RUBBISH FREE!! about what should be done and are currently installing 5 gates. This will prevent the easy access of vehicles which drop rubbish at all hours and motorbike nuisance.
BEFORE
With a huge effort and lots of fundraising, the lanes behind Novers Park Road are about to become officially Rubbish Free. After months of discussion with residents we have a consensus
The Police, City Council Housing, Knowle Safe and the Safer Bristol Partnership have all contributed funds in a collective effort to improve life. Neighbourhood Renewal has paid for the cost of removing a mountain of debris that has built up over years.
Residents are delighted and are planning a clean up and street party in August to celebrate. Resident Chad at 127 said ”I’m ecstatic, and I don’t mind keeping the gate painted”.

WALK FOR PEACE
email: childprotection@bristol.gov.uk www.bristol.gov.uk/privatefostering
This month I walked from Hartcliffe to Westminster, to call on Gordon Brown to find peaceful solutions to the world’s problems. I was shocked by the recent UN report that life in Iraq has become unbearable. I wanted to know if Gordon Brown would stick to the pledge made by the government to rebuild Iraq with well-targeted financial help. I am calling for a debate about how peaceful solutions can be found for other conflict. I want to promote justice and cooperation. Dr. Diana Warner tel: 0117 942 6303

CHILDCARE CONFERENCE
WORDS Maria von Hildebrand
The Bristol Childminding Association held their annual conference at the Mede Community Centre on April 26th. The conference was opened by nationally famed speaker, Ros Bayley, who wowed the audience with her rhythm and rhymes providing an informative and entertaining session. The theme of the conference was ‘Inclusion is Fun’ and included workshops covering; autism, epilepsy, speech development, visual impairment and asthma. The conference attracted 60 childminders from all over Bristol to the Mede, which proved to be an excellent venue where everyone had a fun and interesting day that has given childminders the knowledge and ability to enhance the high quality care they give to children.
If this arrangement is for more than 28 days, it may be what’s known as ‘private fostering’. The law says you need to tell the council about it so we can ensure the children involved are well cared for and safe. For more info please contact the Children and Young People’s Services office for the home area of the child: tel: 0117 3532200

ANIMAL WORD SEARCH By Jazmine Manson local resident (age 11 )
Can you find the words?
CAN’T BEAT FOOTBALL ON THE STREETS? WORDS
Jack Perrett local resident (aged 14)
I myself would rather go to a good field to play football but some kids don’t. One young resident I spoke to said: “I have had people come up to me and my mates and moan at us about playing on the streets. But they probably did it when they were little.’ Another resident I spoke to said: “A lot of the kids don’t seem to have enough road sense. They walk right in front of me when I’m driving. It’s very frustrating. If they paid more attention to the cars, then maybe it wouldn’t be such a problem.” I think playing in the streets starts when you are young because you’re not allowed very far. If you want to have a game of football with your mates, there’s a tournament this summer…see the events pages 8-10.

BRAND NEW SOFT PLAY FOR KNOWLE TINY TEARAWAYZ RUN BY PARENTS FOR PARENTS WORDS
Makala Cheung Editor
Children are soon to get an exciting new adventure play area located in the heart of Knowle at Broadwalk shopping centre, in the former job shop. It will be a family run business venture, owned by a local couple, Kathleen and Daniel, who as parents themselves wanted to provide a fun and safe environement for children aged 0-9, to play and learn, as well as somewhere for parents to meet! Wanting to be involved in the local community has been a major factor in the location of the business. Kathleen and Daniel felt that the area needed an action packed indoor
Printed on recycled paper
play centre for local kids and a high quality cafe, with reasonable prices and a good menu selection. They aim to offer a low cost solution to parties, without comprimising quality: taking the strain and the mess out of throwing a party at home for the kids. Due to start mid August, they will be open 7 days a week! To find out more, and follow the progression of the work on this exciting new development
