MAKING A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER Matthew Symonds Voscur

Every month residents from each of the Neighbourhood Renewal (NR) areas come together to talk about local community issues that impact on people’s quality of life. It’s a chance to hear about what projects are happening in other NR areas, share good ideas and decide how they can influence decisions made through the Bristol Partnership (a partnership between all different organisations in the city). The NR Residents Forum also act as the link between their communities and the Bristol Partnership (the people that make decisions). NR Residents Forum meet once a month at the Council House, on College Green between 1-3pm. To find out more tel: 0117 909 9949

Positive Futures is an extremely pro-active youth organisation based in the Bristol area. Working directly with youngsters between the ages of 10 and 18 they have had a lot of success recently with project based around Anti- Racism and School truancy. James Edwards hosted an evening of talks, films and presentations at The Park, Daventry Rd back in July. Football was the medium used to reach two groups of young lads (one from Knowle West and the other from St Paul’s) who both set up a successful tournament to promote anti-racism. Four short films were screened charting the development of the projects and the young men concerned which helped to create a great deal of enjoyment and understanding of the great achievements the young men had made, to an audience of over 150 residents and parents. There was an awards presentation for both the exceptionally hardworking young people from Positive Futures, and the young people from Christ the King who won the local schools football tournament. Margaret Rawlins is a well-known Knowle West resident who is always busy helping in the community, from being a street rep to working at Eagle House youth club. Recently Illminster Avenue Nursery School surprised her in an assembly when they showed their appreciation to her for standing up to a street robbery which happened on Newquay Road. The children sang songs to her, followed by a round of applause and loud cheering. Inspector Foreman from Broadbury police station presented Margaret with a certificate from the police force for her courage and bravery when she

helped the young man who was attacked. Margaret spoke to the children about what she did and said: “I don’t expect anyone to do what I did…. I knew the people involved and knew what they were doing wasn’t right.” She later told the children: “ All you have to do is be good and stay in school.” We are all very proud of what Margaret does in the community and she is motivating others to respect the estate where they live.

Harvest what you have worked hard all year to grow! Sow over-wintering crops - spring cabbage, perpetual spinach, etc. Replant your pots and hanging baskets with winter and spring flowering (and foliage) plants, like winter pansies and ivy. Plant spring bulbs in the garden. Plant prepared hyacinths indoors for Christmas flowers.Prune your hardy perennial shrubs and herbs – move the half-hardies undercover until spring. After harvest, clear your plots and dig over to let the winter weather into the soil. Plant, or sow, native plants – primroses, red campion, etc. Collect fallen leaves to add to your compost bin. Last, but not least, sit down for a well-earned rest with a drink and start planning for next year… Happy Harvesting!

The Knowle West Carbon Makeover Project, an initiative to help support local households to reduce their bills and carbon emissions, has two new staff based at the Knowle West Media Centre, Misty Tunks as the Project Coordinator and Maddie Stanley as the Community Campaigns Worker. Misty said: “I feel very lucky that I got the job as the Carbon Makeover Coordinator and even luckier that, as a local resident, I get to involve my house hold in this project. Many local people are already doing really positive things to reduce their emissions, e.g. Recycling. We want to take it a little furtherwe want residents to think about how they can reduce the amount of rubbish they produce in the first place. It is an exciting time for KW and I want to scream it from the roof top!” As a part of the project, ten local people will have their say on

different environmental issues through media campaigns. So far two local residents have come forward with ideas who hope to get £1,000 funding through the Unltd awards, www.unltd.org.uk. Firstly Lesley Belgium who wants to sell more fruit and veg in Inns Court, and Mill Lusk who wants to get more people growing their own by buying plant plugs. If you want to start a carbon busting campaign or want to sign up as a household to this project please contact either Misty or Maddie at KWMC on 0117 9030444

Green Scene Money saving, no cost or low cost ideas to help you cut your environmental impacts. This Issue the topic is transport. 1 Keep your car well tuned and serviced – cut fuel use and costs by 5%. 2 Drive a bit slower (70mph uses 25% more fuel than 50mph), braking and accelerating more smoothly – save fuel, save money. 3 Take turns to car share if you can, for work or shopping…you might halve your costs and impacts 4 Try leaving the car at home for short trips, 46% of all car journeys are less than 2 miles 5 Walk, cycle (or take the bus or train more) – get fitter and support public transport.

Environmental education e-petition I have an e-petition on the city council website. Full details at: (www.bristol.gov.uk/item/epetition view.html?PetitionID=191). It is about enhancing environmental education and awareness through school/college environmental charters. Schools and colleges need a focus for their environmental education work - adopting an environmental charter can provide this focus. It would also take forward the Bristol ‘Green Capital’ idea. The council would send a strong signal by circulating a ‘model’ environmental charter to all its schools/colleges. The petition, and full discussion is on my blog vowlesthegreen.blogspot.com Contact me on facebook: www.facebook.com/profile.php? id=611181973

News THE NEW KNOWLE WEST MEDIA CENTRE UPDATE!

The New Knowle Wst Media Centre is on schedule! Due to finish by Christmas and open early 2008

ARTISTS COMMISSIONS

TOPPING OUT CELEBRATIONS! Join us for an open house event taking place on Thurs 4th Oct from 3pm at Novers Park Social Club, to celebrate the roof going on the new Knowle West Media Centre at Leinster Avenue.

WORK TO DATE

THE BUILDING

The old William Budd Health Centre was demolished in February of this year and work started on site in March 2007. Since then, the foundations have gone in, concrete work for the main studio space has gone up, the straw panels have been installed and windows fitted, the roof has gone on and the internal walls erected. Plumbing and wiring are going in before the decorators arrive to finish it all off before Christmas. Deon Rossouw from E.R. Hemmings is the Site Manager in charge of day to day work on site and is

Young people from the Archimedia project determined early on that the building should be:

This was taken on by the architect, who suggested we use building methods such as straw bale construction, solar power, rainwater harvesting and a woodchip boiler system. As a result we will build one of the most eco-friendly buildings in Bristol and the South West of England.

Already we are being seen as an example of how to build ecocommunity centres. Inside will be offices, a 70 seater cinema / studio space, training rooms, meeting rooms, edit and production suites, as well as incubation space and managed workspace available for rent.

STRAW BUILD The building is built from 43 straw bale panels that form the outer walls. Local people, staff of KWMC and a series of sponsors went to Manor Farm in Failand to build the panels, which were then delivered to site by tractor. They were then craned into place and formed the outer walls.

People who came out to the farm enjoyed a day of instruction on straw bale building, lunch provided by the Better Food Co. and a chance to build one of the panels that are now in the building.

Work on the new Knowle West Media Centre is progressing well. Archimedia, which is the name of the project run by KWMC to redevelop the Old William Budd Health Centre, has been going since 2003. Since then, a group of local young people have come together to help fundraise, design and generally be at the centre of all decisions relating to the development. A total of £3.5 million pounds has been raised in order to rebuild Leinster House and provide a new home for the Knowle West Media Centre and provide space for other media related community organisations. Capital money to support the project has come from Bristol City Council, Urban 2, Objective 2, the South West RDA, Neighbourhood Renewal and Arts Council England. Designed by local architect White Design and built by Yate based contractor ER Hemmings, the building will be completed by Christmas 2007 and open for business by April 2008.

• Fit for the purpose of a media centre • Fully accessible to all members of the community • Secure by design • Young people ‘friendly’ • Have a low environmental impact

always around to ensure that everything goes according to plan. Community meetings are held monthly at the Novers Park Social Club and are open to anyone who wants to find out more information about what is going on. It’s also an opportunity for anyone to discuss anything that is of concern. Miles Ford, Archimedia Project Manger and Sandra Manson, Youth Media Worker both from KWMC also attend to make sure any questions can be answered. For more details call Sandra or Miles on 0117 377 3161

As part of the internal fit out that will happen after the main contract is finished, we have raised money from Arts Council England to commission 8 artists to put in pieces of work that reflect the work of the media centre and its role within the city and the community. Currently over 90 artists have applied and working with artist in residence, Simon Poulter (who did the ‘Knowle West Has Some Interesting People campaign’) we hope to bring on some amazing pieces of work. Ideas include signage, reception desks, conference tables and studio doors.

Over the summer holidays, the Archimedia Project ran the Archimedia Summer School in conjunction with the Bristol Architecture Centre and the University of the First Age. 18 young people from the 6 local primary schools spent a week considering the internal look of

the building and putting forward their ideas. During the week they looked at IT specification, colour palates, layout and ambience. The Archimedia Core group acted as peer mentors to the young people and supported them throughout the week.

Residents in Novers Park are on cloud nine after a fabulous street party success on one of this summer’s rare sunny days. After a decision to use a local green space instead of the street, residents got fully behind the party idea and helped the main organiser April get everything done. Events included a dressing up competition, face painting, bouncy castle and lots of laughter, food and chatting.

We are celebrating a successful Knowle Safe bid of £8705 to develop a fully operational garden tools scheme for the area. The idea is that we spread small “toolbanks” around the estate which people can borrow with a little deposit.

FILWOOD BROADWAY CCTV UPDATE Why do we need the CCTV system on Filwood Broadway? The CCTV system is used by the police as a tool to pick up incidents quickly and gather evidence about them. Remember that CCTV is only as good as the police response that comes with it. Between the period March – May 07, we saw a decline in troublesome activity on the Broadway which was noticed and welcomed by us all. Even so, the incidents included a headbutt

attack and a bus stop being vandalised, as well as an attempted suicide and youths fighting. Knowle Safe collates the recorded logs from the monitoring centre and you can see opposite the pattern of incidents that has gone on in the months up to May. If you have a query about CCTV please contact Knowle Safe - we can call the monitoring centre and enquire on your behalf. tel: 0117 9084221

They came from St Phillips, St Judes and “The Dings” To a house with a garden, a playground with swings. The fields down at Filwood and all that fresh air, Our School with a nit nurse that looked through your hair. The dinner halls at Creswicke, the custard with lumps, A bread roll from Price’s, some chips and some scrumps. Our “Head” Mr Russett, followed on by Mr Hughes, If you played up Roy Brimble, you’d go home with a bruise! Mr North used the cane, Mr Stuckey the dap, Then there’s the “Old boys” who put the school on the map. Gordy Parr, Alfie Briggs and some boxers as well, Geoff Wilson, Bobby Fisher they all beat “the bell”! Malcolm Jones, Barry Doyle they all had their wins Don’t forget Matthew Copeland and those Davis twins! Saturdays up the “Bug House”, the old thrupenny rush Mrs Pearce with her shop bike…those black jeans were lush! Got your coal down the coalyard in an old beat up pram Took your rags down “Bobby Bennetts” for a treat of bread and jam. And those characters…do you remember? “Stan the Man” And outside the “Venture”, Jack sold cockles from a van. Get your hair cut from Sid Elvins, he’d have you in tears For all he would use was a basin and shears! Saturday nights down the “Venture”, Henry and Louis on the mic Harry Andow asking for credit, Idwal saying “On yer Bike”! Playing skittles for money, a chance you might earn, Never play Roy Morgan, just watch, listen and learn! Have a bet with the Hickorys or ole Mark Coyne, And there’s always the youth clubs that you could join Broad Plain, Eagle House the Saturday dance Filwood Lads, Corner Cottage ( a chance of romance). The leaders, Vic Martin, Trevor Morgan we all knew, Bert Abrams, Miss Bazeley to name just a few. The early morning specials that left Melvin Square, They were packed to the rafters and a “bob” was the fare. One went to Keynsham where they made all the chocs, The other all smoke filled went to Avonmouth Docks. Bought your paper at Woodalls, remember the “hard times” A box of Englands Glory and those five Woodbines. With Brothers and sisters there’s one thing I dread It’s waking in the morning with the one who wets the bed! In my opinion for all that it’s worth The people of Knowle West are the salt of the earth.

On Thursday 29th August I went to the Cube cinema on Dove Street South, to support a local photographer, my friend Cheryl Martin (pic right) in a Bristol based documentary investigating the works of six local artists. It was fantastic, just like going underground. A small shady lit bar area, seating inside and out. The cinema was small but comfortable. The documentary followed the artist named gHOSTboy illicitly installing Street Art . Lady Lucy an artist with a child-like charm. Chris Fordwoh speed painting for eBay and an interview with NayanKulkarni a public artist, on how he came to design the glass roof for the new CABOT CIRCUS. We also had a peek into the intimate Spike Island Studio of Chris Barr, but my favourite was Cheryl’s photos and interview, the music was by Minotaur Shock. I didn’t understand some of it, but I’m glad I went. I will be on the lookout for gHOSTboy’s works and I can’t wait to see the glass roof in place. The film was directed and produced by Phillippa Daniels, a very talented and lovely lady. Well done to everyone involved!!

The Children and Young People's Information Service (CYPIS) has a database of registered & unregistered childcare in Bristol. It also has an online service directory of services and organisations which can offer support to families. The CYPIS produce information

sheets of activities and places to go for children and young people 0-19 years. In order that the list sent to enquirers is as comprehensive as possible it is imperative that organisations supply CYPIS with their information. It is sometimes

difficult to maintain groups when attendee numbers drop, so if you have a group running or know of an activity in your area for anyone 0-19 and would like us to raise awareness of it and what is on offer, please contact CYPIS tel: 0845 129 7217

By the Project X and Surestart offices at The Park, there is a courtyard which was all overgrown and no one could use it. Some young people from Knowle West, along with staff from Project X decided to make the space somewhere that could be used by young people visiting the offices. We decided to make it more interesting and colourful. In the first week of the summer holidays approximately 30 young people came to the Park to help Project X staff, The Park Staff and Buried Treasure to clear and decorate the courtyard. Some of the activities we enjoyed were - painting pots, making

The children at Knowle West Early Years Centre and Florence Brown have worked hard to plan and develop our allotment. We are proud to say that over the past year the children have grown parsnips, potatoes, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, pumpkins, lettuce and lots of other vegetables. We have had help from some parents and would love to have more parental involvement in the future.

PEEP (Peers Early Education Partnership) gives children a flying start and is for all parents and carers and their children aged 0-4 years. Research tells us that parents and carers can make a real difference to how children learn, especially if they get involved from very early in a child’s life. PEEP supports parents and carers as their child’s first and most important educators. It offers information, ideas and activities based on the PEEP Learning Together materials to support children’s learning in early day situations. For days & times of groups see below.
