NEWS FROM THE POLICE

I want to write about an evaluation report by Dr. Roz Hall December 07. It was an excellent piece of work full of very positive feedback about the newsletter. As a local resident and someone who likes to help out with the newsletter, I would like to address some of the negative comments and to hopefully explain why things have to be the way they are. Q1.It seems to be media centre run not local community It’s very much local, Makala and Tanya edit and design the newsletter from the media centre without whom there would not be a newsletter. The rest of us are local people, anyone in the community can submit articles.
Q2.More in depth news items. We can only put in what we are given by the community. Q3.To have it monthly not quarterly. Due to costs from design & printing to distribution we can only fund a quarterly newsletter. Q4.More news less pictures. It’s more personal to see people you know. It also encourages people to read. If they see the pictures they want to know what the article is about. Q5.Less adverts more articles. We need the adverts to keep the newsletter in colour and to keep it running. It’s also advertising for local business. When it’s in colour it makes it more interesting. So well done to Makala and Tanya and the rest of the newsletter team for giving Knowle West and the surrounding areas a voice.
A KNOWLE WEST CHILDHOOD Julie Ackerman local resident and
winner of the Amazing Archive Knowle West Childhood competition “I grew up with my younger brother and sister in a semi-detached council house which my parents later bought. Despite the financial struggle in the beginning Dad knew it would save money in the long term. My younger siblings and I played in and around the house. I remember trying to sell some old toys to passers-by, we arranged a jumble sale out on the front gate. We often enjoyed spending the money on a mix-up of penny sweets from Jarmon's. Roller skating with the boy across the road, I always enjoyed that. Building dens in the garden and then eating bread and jam inside what we'd made. I also liked walking up and down the street with my mum's high heels on, pushing my doll in a pram. I remember once when mum made me a creped paper dress. I felt like a princess.” Pippa Robinson Amazing Archive ‘Creating a community archive for Knowle West’

Green is the new black Coordinator / resident March, be it early or late Spring, is the best time to plant. Soft fruit bushes can go in now, and many of the usual crops - like summer flowers. Read your seed packets carefully for the best timing and positions for growing. For example, if the weather is cold and wet, leave sowing for a week or two - or sow seeds indoors or under cover. Warm and mild? Sow directly into your garden or containers. Early sowings might include tomatoes, broad beans, salads and hardy flowers (e.g. winter pansies); seed potatoes go in during April, followed by cabbages and root vegetables. Peas, beans and flowers can be sown late April or May, depending on weather conditions. Happy sowing!

Money saving, no cost or low cost ideas to help you cut your environmental impacts. *Save energy wherever possible, saving money, cutting carbon emissions that cause global warming. *Turn down your thermostat by one degree, saving up to 10% on your heating bill. *Insulate your loft with at least 150mm (or even better 250mm) of insulation, saving around 20% on your bill. *Replace light bulbs that blow with energy-efficient ones - they use about a quarter of the electricity and last around eight times as long! *Turn things off when not used don't leave on standby. http://vowlesthegreen.blogspot.com

With the Carbon Makeover project now underway lots of Knowle West homes have started to work to reduce their environmental impact. We have a few places left so if you'd like to be involved and join this movement please contact Misty 9030444 / misty@kwmc.org.uk One of the themes of the Carbon Makeover is looking at ways to reduce our energy use. Two local residents have written about their experiences of home grown power. Ray Hart saved thousands of pounds by installing his own solar photo-voltaic (PV) panels to generate electricity. The Photo Voltaic panels convert daylight, especially sunshine, into electricity, which can be used and stored for later. “We have put separate wires into our house to bring in the electricity from the panels and use it in addition to the electricity mains. When Photo Voltaic is used correctly it saves lots of money; it's reduced our electricity bills by about 50%. “ “It can power radios, laptop computers, portable DVD players, computer accessories, answer phone, and some low power lights and mobile phones.”
“Our eight-year-old daughter finds it fun and it helps to save the environment.” To find out more go to: www.sunshineenergy.co.uk/classadv Dave Wherrett had solar heating installed by a professional national supplier. “Solar Heating works on a relatively simple heat transfer system using both natural sunlight and heat to produce the hot water. Heat is gathered and transferred, from roof mounted solar panels, to the linked hot water tank.” “We believe generating heat from solar energy is effective for us and our planet. As a family of five, we were not disappointed; our gas heating was off from March to September. Our gas bills show a reduction of about 55% or £245.00p (approx).” To find out more or to view this system contact Dave on 0117 972 1209. The Carbon Makeover team hope to run a workshop where local people can come and find out more about installing their own Solar Photo Voltaic panels. NEWS PULL-OUT
Environment Agency news WASTE - OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW ...BUT WHAT HAPPENS TO THE OLD?
It’s that time of year again Christmas has come and gone, spring cleaning is just around the corner and the January sales mean bargains all round. What will you be throwing away and where will you be taking it to? The Environment Agency is raising awareness of how to dispose of your waste properly. Fly-tipping in Bristol every year costs the tax payer - that's you and me £250,000 a year to clear up. I don't know about you but I can think of better ways of spending £250,000!! At last years Bristol Harbour Festival the Environment Agency were out and about talking to the general public, whilst the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts put on a specially designed performance about Fly-tipping. There were opportunities to join in the performance and join the puppet making workshop as well as the odd freebie to pick up here and there!
Environment Agency
If you are employing a tradesman to work on your home, it is your responsibility to make sure that they or the skip company are Registered Waste Carriers. Insist on seeing their Environment Agency licence. If you have any doubts call us on 08708 506 506 or check for registered carriers in your area on our website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk You can find useful information by clicking on waste and then household. Anyone who takes waste away from your home or business (apart from the local authority), be it an old boiler, window frame or wallpaper, has to be a registered waste carrier. If your rubbish is found fly-tipped and traced back to you, you will be prosecuted.
If you have unwanted items to get rid of or if you want to report fly-tipping or litter in your area call Bristol City Council tel: 0117 922 3838
TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD DON'T SLIP UP! DON'T GIVE YOUR WASTE TO A WASTER!
Behind all of the banging of drums and the shouting and cheering - a serious message was going out to householders about making sure your waste goes to the right place instead of ending up fly-tipped around our neighbourhoods. Everyone has a responsibility to make sure their waste is disposed of properly. Do you hate seeing rubbish tipped down alleyways and in rivers? You can help - make sure your waste is going to the right place.

It was a fantastic sing song which involved adults and children of all ages. Many who joined in said it marked the start of Christmas for them. One resident commented: “What a lovely time...the little ones were really enthusiastic...it warmed the cockles of my heart. Here’s to next years gathering!” Knowle Safe would like to say a big thankyou to all those who helped especially: - Avon Fire and Rescue Services for donating the tree and the decorations - Neighbourhood Management for the drink and mince pies - Restore for all their help - Martin Turnbull for his piano playing - Richard Pearce for leading the singing.
But the biggest thanks goes to everybody who came along on a cold wintry evening and sang so beautifully and made the evening such a special and memorable start to Christmas. Photo below: Filwood Broadway Carol Service, provided by James from Avon Fire and Rescue Services

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
A GUIDE TO TACKLING NOISE POLLUTION
It was a double celebration for the birthday girls on 8th January at the Tuesday Lunch Club at the Salvation Army Community Church, on Padstow Road in Knowle West.
Noise and its effect on us can be difficult to pinpoint - one person's favourite music is another person's racket. For one resident, just having a few friends round can cause a major upset to the neighbours. There are actually no legal noise levels. However, there are limits to what is “reasonable”. All the following are sources of noise which you can complain about.: • barking dogs • alarms, including vehicle alarms • construction and demolition sites • deliveries, or refuse/recycling collections at commercial premises • noisy neighbours especially loud music • pubs and clubs • roadworks The basic approach to tackling a noise problem is the same whatever the source: 1st - If possible, approach the people who are causing the noise, and do this when you are not stressed or angry. Remember they may not realise they are causing a problem. 2nd - If the problem continues, take details down on paper: when and where it occurs, how often, are other people affected and how. Talk to the neighbours and gather evidence as proof that the problem is serious. 3rd - Contact the Noise Pollution Team of the Council on 922 3810 who have a legal duty to investigate complaints and take appropriate action. Their first step will be to send a letter to the party causing the noise. It is enshrined in the law that one “can’t cause unreasonable disturbance to the neighbours”.
Resident Jessie Ball will become 101 this week, and Salvation Army Captain Deborah Oughton, has nearly reached half her age, becoming 50 in the same week. Jessie moved up to Knowle West in 1940, she has enjoyed coming to the Lunch Club for four years, she has also enjoyed receiving the Knowle West newsletter.

A WINTER SOLSTICE On a very dark evening of the 21st December 2007 (Winter Solstice); approx. 30 past and present workers, volunteers, supporters and children of KWMC gathered in a field on Dundry Hill overlooking Bristol. The atmosphere was shrouded by mist, making the whole event very intimate. A large crowd gathered around a large bonfire where a couple played haunting music that echoed across the field. Mulled wine, barbecued sweetcorn and roasted marshmallows were welcome treats. A special talking stick was passed around enabling the person holding it to share their experiences of the Media Centre. The stick, the stories shared and recorded along with other valuable items is captured as a wonderful memory and will be incorporated into the
very large meeting room table which Olli designed and has been commissioned to make for the new Media Centre. A big thank you goes to both, Olli, Jai and his team at The Ultimate Holding Company for their support. The evening ended when a rocket was sent up and lighting up the mist, it was a fitting end to a fabulous evening.
GREEN GINGER The stage was set, the lights were dimmed, the puppets were out....Green Ginger performed their last performance of RUST at Filwood Community Centre last December. Brought to Knowle West by Knowle West Media Centre and Theatre Bristol, local people had the chance to experience live theatre at its best. Grotesque puppets, animated sets and shiploads of absurd humour made for a memorable evening. Lighting the Touchpaper is part of an 18-month project to bring professional arts events to 6 key areas in South Bristol, KWMC will be bringing a further 2 shows to Knowle West in the coming months. For more information on Lighting the Touchpaper please contact me - Katie 0117 903 0444 Katie Taylor, local resident.
FILWOOD CAROLS On Dec 12th we went to a carol concert on Filwood Green. It was very chilly but dry evening. There was a really good turnout of families and people of all ages, who enjoyed singing carols around the tree. There was chocolate and juice for the children and mince pies and mulled wine for the adults. A good time was had by all. Here’s to the next one!

(Edited by Denise Britt, resident) After a tragic motorcycle accident in November 2007, Dave Howe former Project Manager for the KWDT's Youth Forum, lost his life. He will be missed by colleagues and friends and the young people Dave worked with in Knowle West. He did so much good work for the young people of Knowle West, influencing others to do the same and become a voice in our community. He always had a drive and passion for young people he worked with always supporting me to achieve anything I wanted to do. He opened my eyes to so many other things I would not have imagined. It is
not just me, there are many of us in Knowle West that know him, he would make time for young people who needed his help even if it meant staying hours after The Greenhouse on Filwood Broadway would be closed for the night. One of my favourite memories of Dave is when he took a group of young people on a canal boat trip, he always said it was about experiencing the unusual because that would make it memorable. I hope he knows how many people will remember him and how many people will miss him. It is such a shock that he is gone but we are proof that the work he did here made a difference. We all miss you Dave Howe.
