local resident (and a very proud parent!)
On the 17th August my family and me went to Newquay Road Park playing fields to watch a friendly football match between Eagle House Juniors and Brislington. What a brilliant day, the field was jam packed with parents and children who are normally playing in the street. My son has joined the training and he loves it. The atmosphere was fantastic and when the players ran down to the pitch with their kits on all looking the same, they looked so smart it brought tears to your eyes and lumps to your throats, they made us feel so proud to be in this community. Well done to the coaches, you
must be really proud for what you have achieved with these children. We can’t wait to come and watch many more.

editor’s Welcome
Street Parties
Your letters over 50’s Club trips I have been on several trips this year with the Over 50’s Club who meet Tuesdays at Filwood Community Centre and the Over 60’s Club who meet Fridays at the Novers Club.
The committee organised a street party in Novers Park Rd/ Drive on 19th July. This was a day for the streets to get together and celebrate. There were many events which included, bouncy castle, face painting, BBQ, games, fancy dress competition, horse and cart rides, puppet show, raffles, bottle stall, Epic Photography and the Tree of Life. The local police and Media Centre attended.
It was a fantastic day with a great turnout. The children had a brilliant time receiving chocolate, sweets and prizes all day long. Even the adults joined in the games. A very special thank you goes out to all the people who helped, attended and organised the day and a big thank you to Jarmans shops, Carmel Café and everyone who donated and brought raffle tickets to help make this a FREE day for all. Another successful event!

By now, Autumn will be well and truly established: the days are noticeably shorter and much cooler. Time to prepare your garden for 2009! As you harvest each crop, take out the remaining debris and dig over the ground (or refresh compost of crops grown in containers). Over the winter, the weather will get into the soil and break it down for you. Then you will easily be able to make new seed beds and add fertiliser where needed (for hungry crops like potatoes). Once you have cleared and prepared your ground, why not cover it with black plastic or horticultural fleece? This will warm the soil up and allow you to sow seeds up to a month earlier in spring (depending on the weather). Now sit down with a hot drink on those chilly evenings and have a good look through the seed catalogues. Why not try something completely new for 2009? Go on - you know you want to! Happy Gardening!

Ideas to save money, live more healthily and go green! • Consider creating a natural garden, or small areas within your garden – to attract wildlife. • Avoid expensive and polluting artificial fertilisers and pesticides – try natural alternatives/methods. • Avoid garden products made from tropical hardwoods and consider softwoods, or hardwoods such as beech and oak, instead – a Forestry
Stewardship Council (FSC) symbol means good sustainable management.
• Choose non-peat composts at the garden centre as a lot of peat comes from areas rich in wildlife.

MUD PIES ANYONE? Misty Tunks resident/KWMC employee Photo: Jaz outs the final touches on the cob oven, provided by MIsty Tunks.

When it comes down to it most people are big kids! This was never more evident than when the Carbon Makeover participants set about building an outdoor earth oven from clay & mud at Knowle West Media Centre in early September. For those that aren’t familiar with an earth oven, it is one of the most simple and longused cooking structures. It costs next to nothing to make, as it is simply a chamber made out of one of the best building materials on the planet; the earth from under our feet! The skills needed to make it are just the ones we were born with! The process was long and slow but the end result was worth it! The earth oven is the Carbon Makeover’s contribution to KW’s Arts Trail on 13th Sept, but its magic moment came on 14th Sept at the Carbon Makeover Food Fayre. When it was fired up we made pizza’s in it! Yum Yum! In the last newsletter we told you about the brilliant work of Team FAB (fight the bag) who are working round the clock to make Knowle West plastic bag free! Well since then they have been running a workshop with toddlers from local nursery, Footprints. They wanted to teach the kids, whilst they are still very young, about recycling and the how bad plastic bags are for the environment. The Nursery is making every effort to use less plastic and from now on they will be using compostable nappy bags. They will also be
encouraging parents not to bring any plastic into the nursery. On top of this, whilst the Team FAB grown-ups have been busy making cloth bags out of recycled materials the Team FAB teenagers have been busy making a short film. The film is about why we in KW should be saying ‘no’ to plastic bags and how bad they are for the environment.

Bristol’s answer to the Credit Crunch has arrived, a new website where you can exchange goods and services, save money and help promote sustainable living and positive change. The site, Barter Buddies, was launched this summer, and is the brainchild of two local businessmen (BS4 brothers - they call themselves). Walt Tarrant said: “The idea was brewing for over a year. Me and my brother Ian took early retirement and put some of the money into our idea. I feel a mixture of excitement and nerves...it’s now a reality which we’re both very pleased with.” The website was developed with GWS media, and you can sign-up for a free trial membership at: www.barterbuddies.co.uk

Healthplexwill provide some ofthe best leisure facilities in uk
People across Knowle could soon be able to enjoy one of the best new leisure facilities in the UK - thanks to the council-led regeneration scheme that’s now taking shape at nearby Hengrove Park. Work has just got underway on building the roads and installing some of the services that will open up the site and enable the ‘healthplex’ leisure centre and other facilities to be accessed and linked to gas, electricity and other services.
Bristol Active, the organisation selected by the council to build and operate the £30 million leisure facility, have published some of their designs for the centre (see pictures above) - and are currently applying for planning permission. If it gets the final go ahead, the complex will provide more than two and half times the swimming capacity of South Bristol’s existing, outdated facilities and would double the number of people taking up swimming in our city. The new‘healthplex’would link up with the new hospital to promote healthy lifestyles and help people in areas like Knowle to manage their health needs. Subject to final planning approvals, work on the leisure complex will start in the spring of 2009 and it could open its doors to customers in autumn 2010. For more about the regeneration scheme at Hengrove go online to www.hengrovepark.com

whatthe designswill deliver
The content of this page is the editorial control of Bristol City Council Images provided by BCC.: View from parkland, Pool Hall, Foyer & reception.
In addition to the leisure complex, the first stage of the scheme will deliver a new community hospital, a skills academy and a new business HQ for a major South Bristol company.
Bristol Active’s designs for the complex show how it would deliver: • Eight-lane 50-metre main swimming pool designed so it can be split into two smaller pools - enabling serious fitness and family fun activities to be run at the same time. • Learner pool • Health spa • Climbing wall • Creche • Moveable floors in both pools, making them accessible for disabled customers and able to accommodate swimming lessons and different age groups. • 150 station fitness suite • Healthy Living Zone • Three aerobics, fitness and dance studios • Sports hall for team games and athletics training • Café set in a ‘winter garden’, connecting the centre to surrounding parkland. • Modern and attractive changing facilities and meeting rooms. • Environmentally-friendly Biomass boiler for ‘green’ power and low carbon footprint
