Revised Map of Option 2 of the Knowle West Regeneration Plan. Supplied by KWRPG.

Knowle West Regeneration Plan: What’s Happening words by knowle west residents’ planning group

R

egeneration plans being developed for the Knowle West area include: • New and improved housing • Employment and training opportunities • Better transport links • New shops and supermarket • Improved parks and play space • Better community facilities • Sustainability and improved environment Following public consultations, the Knowle West Residents’ Planning Group has produced a revised version of its Option 2 involving very little demolition. The group is working with the Council to test whether this will work and attract the developers. The plan involves major change but to be accepted as the agreed plan for Knowle West it would need to be able to deliver the significant improvements to the area that many local residents have been asking for. The Council thinks that an ambitious plan of change is

necessary to attract the substantial private investment needed to bring major improvements to the area. Although there was community support for some of the bigger change ideas in the other options consulted upon, there was not enough support to move forward with them at this stage. The Residents’ Group have developed an ambitious plan and are confident it has the best chance of attracting private funding and developer support. As further work is needed, no decision on a plan for Knowle West has been reached. However, we hope to have an agreed regeneration plan for Knowle West in the near future. For details of updates from the Residents’ Planning Group, the results of consultations and other useful information, visit www. knowlewest.co.uk/regeneration/ kwrpg. For information and details provided by the Council go to www.bristol.gov.uk/KWRF.

News & Events Community Payback words by Anita pearce

A

von & Somerset Probation Service Community Payback Team, Bristol City Council and Clean & Green have been working at various sites across the estate improving the environment and helping to make it cleaner and safer for everyone. Community Payback is a tough and visible consequence for offenders who have committed a crime. Whilst working, offenders are required to wear high-visibility jackets to make sure the public are aware of the work they are doing. All offenders doing Community Payback are screened to assess the risk they may pose to the public and are closely supervised by professional staff at all times.

Offenders can receive up to 300 hours. Work can involve cutting back dense undergrowth, litter-picking, clearing fly-tipped rubbish or scrubbing graffiti from walls. They do not undertake work in private gardens or homes. Filwood Park - on the cover of this issue - is one of the locations they have been working at. Residents have commented on how it’s looking much better and feels safer than it did a few weeks ago. Over 90,000 hours of Community Payback are carried out by offenders in Avon & Somerset each year. More information can be found at www.avonandsomersetprobation. org.uk/main/index.asp

On the ball...

Football leagues in your area words by james edwards, somerset F.A. e have had a massive uptake of schools wanting to get involved in the new interschools football tournaments being held at South Bristol Sports Centre. There are 3 new competitions all being run over the next 3 months. One of the leagues will see the top teams going on to play in the finals at Ashton Gate, home of Bristol City, against the winners of the North/Central tournament. The second is an “Interschools Girls League” and the third is a league for the 6 schools in/near Knowle. This league is used as a reward for the students, as players are chosen on behaviour at school rather than footballing ability. The results of this league are not recorded as it is about encouraging young people to play football rather than the importance of winning. A lot of these young people may have never played in a team before and we want them to enjoy their experience and not be put off for life by over-competitive parents or teachers. All three leagues are officiated by local guys who were referred to the Positive Futures programme over five years ago and all are now in paid employment and key role models in the area. They are James Maby (Positive Futures), Billy Downes and Sam Downes (Bristol City In The Community). If you have any questions regarding football in this area please get in touch, email: james.edwards@somersetfa.com

Mrs Ball, smiling at age 104. Interview & photo by Sue Mackinnon.

he secret to a long and happy life is knowing how to care for yourself and not to give up – according to Jessie Ball, Knowle West’s oldest resident. Mrs Ball (104) has lived in the area since 1940 when she moved from Bedminster with her late husband Edward and two daughters, Irene, who has since passed away, and Clarice (now 74).

“We had an Anderson shelter in 1940, but more often than not it was flooded - so we turned the settee upside down and sheltered under that!”

She recalls: “I was pleased to have a house and garden for the children to play in. I had come to the area when I was a child and was friendly with the girls at Inns Court Farm. There was pasture and barley, wheat and oats and that’s why we still get wild oats in our gardens.” In 1942 she had another daughter, Christine, and all three girls attended Connaught school. The war years are still very vivid in her mind and she remembers May 11th, 1940 when bombs were dropped on the area. “We had an Anderson shelter but more often than

not it was flooded - so we turned the settee upside down and sheltered under that! A bomber was firing at the houses and if you look at some of them in Donegal Road, you can see where they pockmarked them.” Mrs Ball was an active member of St Barnabas Church and helped at the youth club. She remembers: “In the war years there were 100 members. We wanted to keep them off the streets and gave them cocoa, beans on toast and corn beef sandwiches. I still get some of them visiting me now.” A keen gardener until well into her 90s, Mrs Ball planted three apple trees from seed and grew her own vegetables. There are two things she always wanted to do in life – to become a nurse and to sing – but her family could not afford nursing training. However, Mrs Ball is still partial to breaking into song and sings a hearty rendition of “When You’re Smiling”. Mrs Ball says her happiness comes from her family and weekly visits to the Salvation Army lunch club where she is overwhelmed by the friendliness there. One of her fondest memories is her 100th birthday party with over 100 people attending and the telegram from the Queen. She laughs: “I’m looking forward to getting another telegram on my 105th birthday!”

Green & Gardening Gas metering comes to Knowle West

Ten lucky residents will now be able to view their gas consumption online - as part of an energy project being run by Knowle West Media Centre.

Advertorial

T

he Digital Environment Home Energy Management System (DEHEMS) project currently has 50 Knowle West homes involved – viewing their electricity usage online. The project has been running since 2009 and has helped residents to cut costs and help the environment at the same time. Bristol is one of only three UK cities taking part in the project – along with Birmingham and Manchester. Now for the first time, 10 residents will also be able to see their home gas usage for the next three months.

Lee Townsend, who has been involved in DEHEMS since it began, says: “I am very excited about being part of the new gas project. I took part because I wanted more knowledge on energy consumption and for financial and environmental reasons. Having the gas monitoring will help to identify when I am using my gas and see how beneficial my solar panels are.” To find out more about DEHEMS log onto www.dehems.org or contact KWMC on 0117 903 0444. Concerned about energy use: Lee Townsend and one-year-old son Eli.

your spring garden words by lesley belgium, columnist

T

ake a deep breath and get ready to roll: the 2011 growing season has officially begun. Never mind what the weather is doing this month, it’s time to sow your seeds. Have a look at those seed packets and divide them into an easy-to-manage sowing scheme - March/April, May/June and July/ August. That way you can spread

the hard work out across a few months instead of trying to cram it into a few short weeks. Crops like early peas and carrots could be grown twice in the same year; maybe you can sow them now and again in mid-summer. Salad crops, like radish, can be sown every 3-4 weeks and harvested right up until September.

www.knowlewest.co.uk for more news and info

You can also start your bedding plants off from seed: sow now for carpets of colourful (and scented) flowers - at a fraction of the cost!

Happy gardening!

What are your ingredients for happiness? What really matters, keeps you going and gives you purpose? During March, Happy City, a small Bristol based charity, are working in partnership with some of the incredible people and projects around here, to get people thinking and talking about happiness and spotlighting and celebrating what’s working so we can do more of it. Together we’re hoping to challenge negative perceptions of Knowle, Knowle West and Filwood and to help tell the other side of this community’s story - the masses of things going on across the area increase happiness and provide solutions. Overall, there are loads of lessons others can learn from what’s working here. Of course, people have always searched for more happiness. Recently, everyone seems to be talking about it, even the government are starting to see that just focusing on money, growth and owning more and more stuff isn’t making people happier. This month, let’s celebrate Knowle and lead the way, by not just talking about it but showing others how to do it! Come along to one of the many events or activities happening this March. You’ll find more details in community buildings across the area. For more information go to www. happycity.org.uk or email info@ happycity.org.uk. Thanks to everyone in the area who’s been helping us make this happen.
