nowledge readers will know the Regeneration Plans being developed for the Knowle West area include: • New and improved housing • Employment opportunities • Better transport links • New shops and supermarket • Improved parks and play space • Better community facilities • Sustainability and improved environment. We consulted on the emerging regeneration plans at the end of last year. We found that having a new shopping centre and supermarket was a top priority for local people.
When we asked where people wanted the shopping centre, at Jarmans or Filwood Broadway, you clearly said Filwood Broadway (65% of respondents). Following discussions with supermarket operators, we now believe that we can attract a national supermarket chain to invest in Filwood Broadway. This is a major step in delivering the regeneration improvements that local people have been asking for. Local people will again be consulted upon detailed plans for Knowle West later in the year.
Community Payback: Update

he Community Payback Team continue to work across the estate on various sites identified as ‘eye-sores’. These sites include the black path at Inns Court, the back of Eagle House on Newquay Road, the playing fields, the lane running between Hartcliffe Road and Barnstaple Road behind Filwood Broadway, and Filwood Community Centre. n Saturday 2nd July, South Bristol Sports Centre will be hosting a men’s Summer 7-aside football tournament. There will be £1,000 worth of football kit for the winners, as well as trophies, prizes and drinks to be won. ‘Grease’ is the one that you want free film screening!
S
pend a summer night reliving the fun and drama of one of the most popular films of all time: Filwood Community Centre will be holding a free outdoor film screening of the hit musical “Grease” on Friday 27th May, 7.30pm. The bar will be open and a BBQ will be available. Set in 1950s America, “Grease” tells the story of popular Danny, shy Sandy and their friends, in their last days of High School. The film was suggested by local residents and is being hosted by the Community Centre in partnership with Knowle West Media Centre and the Haiti Kids Kino Project, who are a group of volunteers who travel to Haiti to show films to children affected by the 2010 earthquake. rom football practice on Saturday mornings and raising funds for our first kit, to entering the league in 2009-2010, Broadwalk Under-10s had an amazing first season, finishing runners up and showing good team spirit, skill and determination. This season, 2010-2011, the team has been unstoppable, storming the league to become undefeated champions, scoring just under 300 league and cup goals and winning the cup with a 9-3 victory. They only conceded 17 goals. This is a fantasic achievement by Broadwalk, along with the huge
support of family and friends and the hard work and dedication of their Manager, Antony, Emma and Taff. It’s been a privilege to watch them play and I am looking forward to another fantastic season. All the kids that play for Broadwalk Under-10s are Knowle West born and bred and go to local schools within the area. We think they have done the area proud and deserve recognition for their fantastic achievements. Thank you to Tara’s Sandwich Bar and Jack’s Barber Shop for their sponsorship this season.
Filwood Photographic Darkroom & Community Café Words by Heather Vernon he only community art café and darkoom in South Bristol will soon be available! It will operate out of Filwood Community Centre in a newly refurbished room that has previously been used as a darkroom. During the Easter break a small group of volunteers helped to clear the old space in preparation for the summer and the opening of the facility. The darkroom will be fully accessible and available to anyone interested in

learning about traditional darkroom techniques, photography and more! This project will be run on behalf of the community by a steering group and we are currently looking for local people to join this group. Volunteers are taught gardening skills by re:work and Buried Treasure and digital media skills by Knowle West Media Centre. Green Gym on the Bommie words by julia tutton reen Gym is a unique scheme operated by British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) to help people to become physically and mentally healthier by taking part in a variety of nature conservation activities. A local group operates on the Bommie, getting involved in clearance work, woodland management, improving paths, creating steps, and habitat management.

It’s a great way to relieve stress: getting outdoors and in contact with nature for a few hours, meeting different people and feeling refreshed, whilst working at your own pace and capability. It’s a good feeling looking back and realising that what we are doing makes such a difference in our own community. Already a large area looks better and it’s so much easier to get around the site too!

esidents in Filwood have come to their Neighbourhood Forum meeting to tell us that they are sick and tired of the dog mess that they see all over the streets in Filwood and especially in children’s play areas and football fields. Your Neighbourhood Team has listened and are currently planning a week-long campaign that will run over the summer to raise awareness of the issue and target owners who don’t pick up after their dog. • If you are a dog owner please ensure you clear up your dog’s poo. You can put it in any rubbish bin, not just dog litter bins. • If you see someone not clearing up after their dog, report them! It’s an offence for a dog owner not to clear up if their dog has fouled in any open area in Bristol and they can receive an £80 on the spot fine. A
group of young photographers based in Knowle West had their work displayed at four venues across Bristol this Spring. The ‘Body Image’ exhibition by Nlarge Photography, commissioned by the National Osteoporosis Society, explored common attitudes to body image, from happiness to reflection, and some of the difficulties

we can face, such as eating disorders. The exhibition toured to College Green, KWMC, Stokes Croft and the University of the West of England. Nlarge are aged 11-18 and meet every Tuesday from 6-8pm at KWMC, on Leinster Avenue. They are keen to welcome new members. Contact Chloe on 0117 903 0444.

Island survival! words by tony monks, youth moves
A
group of young men from Youth Moves have successfully completed a three-day survival course on Flat Holm Island. The idea came about when the young men were discussing what they could do for a team-building residential. The group are fairly new and wanted to feel more of a group. Youth Moves linked up with “Into the Wild”, an organisation that delivers survival skills and training. The group were responsible for building their own shelters, creating fire, preparing and cooking food, and safely using a knife whilst learning to live with basic tools and limited equipment. We started at 5am and set off for Cardiff where we boarded a speedboat designed to rescue unfortunates who had been stranded in the English Channel. This was a
great experience and was a great start to the trip. Once on land, the whole group worked as a team to find an appropriate place to set up camp. Once settled, shelters were made from branches and whatever could be found in the sparse environment. We then walked along the coast and looked for limpets on the rocks and crabs. Some of the young men set up crab lines in hope they would catch a meal for the group. This then led to setting up traps and snares. The group thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Simon Smith took part: “I really enjoyed the trip and would like to do something similar in the future. I have learnt new skills and most of all I have learnt I must keep re-hydrated: I forgot to drink for a whole day!” For more information please call 0117 903 9796.
Spring clean your smoke alarm Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is reminding people who are carrying out spring cleaning to check that their smoke alarms are working. Last year there were 614 fires across the AF&RS area. Of those 57% (349) either had no smoke alarm or a smoke alarm that didn’t work. Smoke alarms can only save lives if they’re working. If you already have smoke detectors in your home, check them once a week to ensure they are working as part of your weekly housework routine. Public art: what, where?
Whose Data? is also the name of an arts project based at KWMC. In March, a group of local residents helped to choose four artists who will return to Knowle West this summer to develop new ways of representing “live data”, such as metre readings, to help us make more sense of it. Thank you to the residents who took part. We’re also delighted to announce that KWMC has been awarded three years’ funding from Arts Council England, beginning in April 2012. Knowle dge Learning Centre Did you know that Bristol City Council have provided a new multi-million, state of the art Leisure and Learning facility in your area? Knowle DGE Learning Centre! As well as serving students, the Learning Centre wishes to be a hub for the entire community. A new building gives the opportunity to include valuable community facilities. The aim is for local residents to be able to access family activities, evening courses opportunities, a learning resource centre, sports facilities and out-of-hours youth activities. Some of the facilities available are:
