A word from your Editor Rachel Clarke Summer is upon us and, as ever, it brings lots to look forward to: from imminent exam results and holidays to the redevelopment of certain areas of our community (p.2) and a new play park for our children (p.3). As I write we’re fresh from Andy Murray’s Wimbledon victory and on the way to seeing another British winner of the Tour de France, the famous cycling race and the highlight of my summer! As our cover story - ‘Building a better community’ suggests, it’s important to look to the future - to aspire to make things better by working together and working hard. However, I also think it’s important to make the most of the here and now, and I hope our articles detailing local campaigns and celebrating your successes do just that (p.5&6). As always, you can send your articles and letters to me by e-mail (rachel.clarke@kwmc.org.uk) or by calling 0117 903 0444. Contact Sue Mackinnon if you’re interested in becoming a community reporter and writing about the things - big or small - that affect your community. We look forward to hearing from you!
Last month hundreds of tributes covered the pavements and hedgerows of a Knowle West street following the tragic death of teenager Jake Milton, who was stabbed on 14 June. Bunches of flowers, candles and football shirts were left on the corner of Newquay Road and Cossington Road. In the weeks following seventeen-year-old Jake’s death, a walk around Knowle West was also organised in his memory. His parents Nicholas Milton and Tracey Grant issued a statement through the Avon and Somerset Constabulary, part of which is reproduced here: “To lose a child in any circumstances is too much to bear. To lose a child in these circumstances makes it even more difficult. Jake was on the threshold with the whole of his adult life to look forward to … All of those close to Jake are grateful for the support and encouragement that has been shown by all those that knew him, and indeed the wider community.” Two men – aged 18 and 19 – were arrested on suspicion of murder and have appeared before Bristol Crown Court. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
Corrections Last issue we made two errors in listing telephone numbers. On page 12 we listed the Friendship Club: Bingo, refreshments and company for over 40s (Tuesdays 10.30am-12 noon, Filwood Community Centre). Their telephone number should’ve read 0117 963 9569. The telephone number for Knowle West Children’s Centre was missed off their advert. Their contact details are Knowle West Children’s Centre, Leinster Avenue, Bristol, BS4 1NN. Telephone: 0117 903 0214.

Health Park becomes Living Wage Employer
Redevelopment of the Kingswear, Torpoint and Haldon Close area By Stride Treglown Ltd.
Bristol City Council and Knightstone Housing are working together on plans to improve public open space and provide a new residential development within the Kingswear Road, Torpoint Road and Haldon Close areas. Public consultation events were held earlier this year to get the community’s views on proposals. The project team would like to thank everybody who attended and provided comments. The feedback received has been very helpful in developing the plans in more detail. A planning application will be submitted in summer 2013. This will seek full planning permission for 71 new homes at Torpoint Road, to be built by Knightstone Housing, as well as permission for improvements to the central public open space, to be carried out by Bristol City Council. Plans for the public open space include new areas of play for children, seating, an accessible picnic area, new and improved pathways, and a general tidy of the flora and fauna, with new wildflower planting and fruit trees. Outline planning permission will also be sought for 50-60 new homes split between land to the west of Haldon Close and land uphill of Kingswear Road. You can find out more about the proposals by visiting www. bristol.gov.uk/kingswearandtorpoint or calling 0117 974 3271.
The Knowle West Health Park Company (KWHPC) recently announced its new status as a Living Wage employer, one of only two Bristol-based organisations to belong to the scheme. The Living Wage is an hourly rate that is set independently and updated annually, based on the cost of living and working in the UK. Vicki Morris, Chief Executive of KWHPC said: “I’m thrilled that we have become an initiator of what is a immensely important issue and to hopefully lead the way in many more Bristol companies signing up to the Living Wage scheme.” To learn more contact Vicki on 0117 377 2255.

News CSV Play Rangers Project gets Lottery boost CSV Play Rangers has been delivering outdoor play and learning across Bristol for six years and they’ve just received a £250,000 boost from the Big Lottery Fund for the next three years. This new funding will allow them to continue the activity sessions and improve access to outdoor play in areas including Knowle West, Hartcliffe and Withywood. The grant will fund four play sessions a week, as well as bringing together local children, young volunteers and adult volunteers to form a project steering group. Nicky Jones, CSV Play Manager in Bristol said: “CSV is delighted to have received this funding from the Big Lottery to continue working outdoors in the heart of the community with the children that really need interesting and challenging play opportunities.” During term time CSV Play Rangers are at Newquay Road park on Mondays and at the Knowle West Health Park Pod on Wednesdays, 3.15-5.30pm. In the summer holidays they will be offering Playdays every Thursday afternoon at Knowle West Health Park Pod.

Mayor visits Filwood By Kurt James, Area Coordinator
T
he Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson, visited Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill in April. Although the itinerary for his visit was packed, it did start and finish on time without missing anything out. Highlights of his visit included unveiling the plaque awarding the title of Centre of Excellence to Knowle West Children’s Centre, being asked questions by pupils of Christ the King Primary School, opening the new garden at Ilminster Avenue Specialist Nursery School and Children’s Centre, visiting the site proposed for the new primary school on Marksbury Road, visiting Victoria Park in Windmill Hill, and seeing the improvements to Redcatch Park in Knowle.

Dog fouling is still a problem in the area. Irresponsible dog owners who don’t clean up after their dogs leave a mess on the street and a health risk for everyone. If you spot someone not clearing up after their dog please report it to the Dog Warden Service on 0117 922 2500 or email dog.warden@bristol.gov.uk Make sure you have a description of the owner and the dog, as well as where and when you saw them. If you spot dog mess that has not been cleared up please report it by calling 0117 922 2100. The more pressure put on irresponsible dog owners the better. A
s the temperature rises firefighters from Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) are urging people to enjoy the weather safely. As hundreds of families plan outdoor activities, crews are asking them to make sure their barbecues are safe and happy events. Safety tips: • Keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby. • Follow the safety instructions provided with disposable barbecues. • Never use a barbecue indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Make sure your barbecue is well away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs or garden waste. • Use enough charcoal to cover the base of the barbecue, but not more (normally around 5cm or 2 inches). • Keep children, pets and garden games away from the cooking area. • After cooking, make sure the barbecue is cool before moving it. • Empty ashes onto bare garden soil, not into dustbins or wheelie bins. If they’re hot, they can melt the plastic and cause a fire. • Enjoy yourself, but don’t drink too much alcohol if you are in charge of the barbecue.
No drinking zone update – working with you By Lloyd Allen
Share your views on council tax support National council tax benefit ended this year and has been replaced by local council tax reduction. This gives low-income households support with their council tax payments. Bristol’s council tax reduction scheme may be changing and some low-income households may have to pay more. Have your say at www.bristol.gov.uk/ counciltaxreduction or pick up a copy of the information booklet and questionnaire at your local library or customer service point. The consultation runs until 28th September.

Thank you to all who have reported street drinking since the no public drinking zone went live on 1st April. In the first three months drinkers have been stopped about 70 times by your the local Police. This means that the chances of alcohol-related anti-social behaviour happening have been reduced.
• Never use petrol or paraffin to start or revive your barbecue; use only recognised lighters or starter fuels. Gas barbecues: • Never store gas cylinders in the home. Store them outside, away from direct sunlight and frost. • Take care when turning bottled gas barbecues on and off. • Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder. • After cooking, turn the gas supply off first and then the barbecue control. This will stop any gas from leaking. • If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas cylinder and try brushing soapy water around all joints, watching for bubbles. • Make sure all joints are tightened, safe and secure. • Change gas cylinders outdoors in a well-ventilated area. AF&RS Station Manager for Community Safety, John Rides, said: “If you do have a barbecue which gets out of control, don’t try to tackle it yourself as you risk getting burnt or scalded. Dial 999 and ask for the fire service. We have the right equipment and training to deal with emergencies of this kind.”
If you see someone drinking in public in the zone call your local Police on 101 as soon as you see it happening so that something can be done about it. The Police need to have a description of the drinker, as well as where and when. For further information on the zone go to www.bristol.gov.uk/filwoodnpdz
Thank you to those of you who responded to the last issue of the Knowledge and got in touch to say you would like to put stickers on lampposts in your street to reinforce the zone. We are now planning where they will go. If you didn’t get in touch before but would like to, please call me on 0117 914 2205 / 07825 315628 or e-mail Lloyd.allen@ bristol.gov.uk @SuMountstevens: Off to the Park in Knowle West to meet young people from Youth Moves Important to hear their voices after last week’s tragedy

Popular librarian retires after 30 years By Community Reporter Rebeca Castineira
Popular librarian Pat O’Hara stamped her last book at Filwood Library in April – retiring after 30 years serving the community. Pat has spent most of her career in Filwood and in the past four years has also been a familiar face at Knowle Library. Although she doesn’t live in the area, after such a long time working here she feels like ‘just one more neighbour’. She says: “I’ve loved working here. I’ve got a lovely team and we are more like a family. That’s why I feel both happy and sad about retiring.” For Pat, the best part of her job has been meeting people in the community and getting to know them. She explains: “They come when they are babies, and you see them growing up…I feel very happy when they come back after a few years and still recognise me.” When she looks back, she feels especially proud about all the activities they have arranged for local children in the holidays and after school. She says one of the most satisfying things about working in the library is ‘keeping the kids together, enjoying their free time and learning’. Pat has seen a lot of changes in the past 30 years - with the Ebook, Internet and videogames stealing the space that belonged to the traditional book. She says: “Although I think that people read less now than some years ago, I’m sure that there will always be a place for the book.”

arlier this month, Kwads, Knowle West’s community-based drug and alcohol family support charity, heard that its government funding via Safer Bristol will not be renewed. Unless the charity can find alternative funding they may not be able to continue their work beyond the end of the year. “We know that this is a story that the people of Knowle West may feel they’ve heard before,” says Carolyn Purcell, current Chief Executive Officer of Kwads. “The sad truth is that the organisation has had to mobilise support on a number of occasions to fight for its survival, and the community has rallied round.” The organisation started back in 1994 as Knowle West Alcohol and Drugs Service - set up by a group of mothers campaigning to get help for their drugaddicted children, and for the families trying to care for them. Over the years, many local people have given their time and energy to support the organisation. Kwads still works out of the same offices but it now supports clients all across Bristol, specialising in providing support services to the families and carers of drug and alcohol users. “It would be an incredible waste to lose Kwads’ 19 years’ experience as a grass-roots organisation,” says Carolyn Purcell. If you can help Kwads in any way, please contact them on 0117 953 3870 or via www.kwads.org.uk

as being ‘just as much hers’ and says although she is not here to share it, ‘it is part of her too.’ And he says of his achievement: “Looks like it’s not only the Queen who’ll be celebrating her 60 years of activity this year!”
Local hero Graham Blacker has been presented with the Lord Mayor’s Medal for his 60 years of voluntary work across Knowle West. Mr Blacker (77) has been Secretary of Knowle West Baptist Church for over 40 years as well as governor of two schools. He is also a trustee of Filwood Hope and Community in Partnership Knowle West - and was nominated for his work as a director of Knowle West Health Association. But after receiving a nomination letter in April this year, he had no idea he would be successful, explaining: “Lots of people get a nomination but only 13 or so actually win it.” The award was presented to Mr Blacker and 14 others in May by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Peter Main. Broad Plain House football club have been trying for many years to progress into the Somerset County League - and this was finally achieved by the first team this year! It was made possible with the help of the Filwood Playing Fields Trust and a grant from the Filwood, Knowle and Windmill Hill Neighbourhood Partnership Grants Fund so we could improve our facilities to the necessary standard to meet the league requirements. The team is managed by local entrepreneur Jimmy White, who inspired the team to win their last thirteen games. Our first team player of the year Aaron Selby scored an amazing forty three goals this season. Our reserves team player of the year was Brandon Marshall (18), and Neal Thomas (45) took the award for the A team, thus illustrating the diverse range of players our club consists of! It would be nice to see more local support for the club as we try to improve the standard of football in the area. We encourage local people to come along to Filwood Playing Fields. For more details and our fixtures contact me on 07910 868963.

Knowle West fitness enthusiast has raised over £3,000 for charity this year after taking part in two major runs. Chris Copeland (53) recently completed the London Marathon followed by the Bristol 10k in May – and now plans to run the Bristol Half Marathon in September. He says: “Running is a passion and keeps me fit and slim… I don’t want to sit and watch TV”. That’s why he has been training up to five days a week since 2006, when he ran his first Half Marathon in Bristol. Since then he has never looked back – running to work at Asda in Bedminster in only 15 minutes – and then training for a further hour every night. His training has paid off and he ran the London Marathon in 3 hours, 37 minutes and 52 seconds – coming 5,975th out of 35,000 participants. Chris says he ‘feels proud’ he can use his hobby to help others – raising sponsorship for charity since he started and for Breast Cancer since
2012. He explains: “After work I spend two hours at Asda collecting money for the charity.” He intends to keep running and says his regime includes pasta before a race and a bowl of cereal every night. “I watch what I eat, I never drink or smoke and don’t have a car so walk everywhere. I would say to others wanting to do it to train gradually and run with somebody else – or with me if you could keep up with me!”

Community rallies round local family
A pupil from Christ the King Primary School has been awarded a bursary to the Bristol Old Vic Company - after being talent-spotted by representatives. Ten-year-old Ellie Lovell from Knowle West was the only pupil to be invited to the theatre, after doing a presentation with class members for the Company project, which works with local schools. After being told that she ‘had something that stood out’ by the Old Vic drama teachers, the year 6 pupil was offered a two month bursary to cover drama lesson costs. Ellie says: “I’ve always been a bit of a show-off and loved performing ever since I was four.” She has been involved in numerous performance classes - from street dance to musical theatre. But she always knew ‘it was acting she wanted to carry on’ after playing the part of Grandpa Joe in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at her school. Ellie is currently preparing herself for her upcoming theatre performance: “Playtime” at the Bristol Old Vic.

The event in memory of Julie Hodge was held at Filwood Community Centre to show the community’s affection for the family – and also give some economical help. Around 200 people came and raised £4,200 to support Julie’s children Candice (18) and Levi (16). Nicola Penny, one of Julie’s best friends, organised the charity auction and reggae night in May, with the help of some friends. She explains: “Julie was loved and really well-known in the area…The family had a lot to deal with in the last two years and I thought this event could be a good idea to help them… I didn’t expect to get that much money. All the hard work has paid off.”

e think that lively, profitable communities are created when people make a living by doing what they love. As part of a new business programme, funded by the ERDF, we’re growing businesses by introducing new ideas to enterprising people.
What has Bristol been eating? Last month we spent ten days at the Parlour Showrooms on College Green with the Foodscapes exhibition. There was plenty of baking, chickenplucking, planting, talking and sharing: almost 900 people came through the space and talked to us about their experiences with food. We also baked bread with over 60 people and discovered what Bristol had been eating during Big Green Week – ranging from pasta, chips and toast to cherries, salad and ice cream! The partnership exhibition aimed to explore how using arts and performance in local food production initiatives can help to address challenges including food poverty and sustainability. For more information visit foodscapesbristol.wordpress.com or contact Melissa: melissa.mean@kwmc.org.uk
The programme makes the most of new ‘green’ and digital technologies and aims to create jobs for the community. Would YOU like to make a living doing something you love? Would you like to run or be part of a business that makes a difference to your community and beyond? A great way to start is to come to the Knowle West Maker Fayre on Saturday 21st September: meet designers and other entrepreneurs and get some hands-on experience at making things. If you’d like to be part of a new kind of business or you have an idea for one that needs developing we’d love to hear from you. We can offer mentoring and support, introduce you to experts, match you with potential partners and help you research your market. PCC meets with local young people Youth Opinions hosted a visit from Sue Mountstevens, Police and Crime Commissioner, at Youth Moves office on 20th June. Young people from the young mums group, detached, Parkour and other projects talked about the groups they attend and their relationships with the police in the local area. Tilly, from Youth Opinions, said: “It was very positive that Sue was really interested in the views of young people, and was committed to listening to young people. Sue showed, from attending the meeting and her comments and talks with young people, that she is committed to involving young people, which is great for us.”
Youth Opinions seeks new members Youth Opinions has been running in South Bristol for almost six years, and during that time they’ve been involved in getting young people’s voices heard at all levels of decision-making. Youth Opinions are

now looking for new young people to get involved in their activities, which include: • Monitoring Youth Provision - going to different youth projects in South Bristol, interviewing staff and young people and observing the projects. You’ll give feedback to the projects about the positives and things that could be improved – a bit like a mini OFSTED inspection ;) • Training adults to enable them to listen to young people and get them involved in their projects. • Consultations - using social media, interviewing and doing surveys with young people about a range of issues. If you’re interested in getting involved you need only commit to meeting twice a month. Support and training will be available for all new members. This is a great thing to have on your CV and we will also get all involvement accredited. You don’t need any specific qualities: we want to represent ALL young people. If you’re 13 – 19 and want to get involved contact Denise: denise. clifford@youthmoves.org.uk or 0117 903 9796. Message us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/YouthOpinions
A Ride in The Park – Cycle Challenge Do you need help finding the answer to a difficult problem, or maybe you just need a person who will listen to you?
Two of The Park’s tutors, John Bennett and Steve Winstanely, have taken up the daunting task of cycling from Land’s End to John O Groats. They ride off in August and are raising money to purchase inclusive bikes for a new cycle project they are launching later in the year. Any support for this great effort is appreciated: you can donate by visiting www.justgiving.com and searching “A Ride in The Park”. Also, working with Lifecycle UK, The Park is hosting a Family Fun Cycling Day on Wednesday 31st July between 11am and 3pm. The day will consist of bike demos, Dr Bike, bike swaps and more. Call Karen on 07734 335878 for details.
Whatever the issue, we are here to help. We will work with you to resolve your problem or refer you to where you can receive the correct advice. We are open every weekday morning from 9.30am – 1pm plus some afternoons, check our display boards or give us a call for more information.
