THE BALANCE OF OPPOSITES VOLUME 02 | CHAPTER 03 EWOK AND DMOTE IN PUERTO RICO A quick trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico with two artists out to paint the town red. EWOK and DMOTE got themselves into a good situation, let loose in a town full of beautiful women and plenty of walls to paint. San Juan is known as La Ciudad Amurallada, the walled city—music to any graffiti writer’s ears.

BRKN HOME

WORDS: KARL FUHRE PHOTOGRAPHY: ANDRE PINCES

Brknhome, once dubbed every t-shirt line’s favorite t-shit line, has been in the business of creating bold, thought provoking and artistic street wear since 2001. Goggle it! Comments like “immaculately produced tee’s”, “cleverly thought out designs”, “bold graphics with messages”, “the industry’s cleverest and most artistic designs” and “never failing to impress” are abundant. With all this hype, it’s not surprising they have a cult following. When it comes to the independent t-shirt game, Brknhome is definitely on top. Toronto natives Kenta Goto and Josh Pong currently reside in Vancouver, where they met roughly ten years ago, later launching Brknhome with a limited run of hand screened t-shirts. Kenta elaborates, “Our first piece was a hand screened t-shirt with a semi-automatic rifle on the back. We started off wanting to create an army of Brknhome supporters. We have soldiers all around the world now.” Both working in creative fields, Kenta as a designer and Josh as an illustrator they started Brknhome as an outlet where they’d have full control, a place their ideas wouldn’t be filtered. Drawing inspiration from everything from current affairs, news, pop culture, music to their environment the duo say, “anything worth discussing can turn into a graphic”. With super tight distribution channels, getting your hands on actual Brknhome goods is more difficult then reading positive reviews about their latest collection. The Brknhome team handpicks every store their brand is shipped to, limiting it to one store per major city. Kenta explains, “We keep it pretty tight when it comes to a shop list. We want to keep our product something you still have to hunt for. We work with shops that want that type of product and understand that it’s not always about quantity.” www.brknhome.com

PAUL 107

This is my favorite picture all time. That doesn’t really mean anything though because I speak in superlatives all day. I have a new favorite everything, every five minutes. Talk music or cinema with me some time,it’s a trip. Moving right along, this photo isn’t my Illmatic or even my The War Report, It’s an album cut a mistake that happened in the lab, so to speak. I chose it because it’s a few years old, and every few months I see it and I’m like “Ohh that’s one’s good the colors are nice and that twig is really in focus. The picture is a portrait I took of myself for my second book. Everything about it is wrong; its completely out of focus, and the diamond shaped tile on the wall behind me looks like a messed up photoshop filter. So wack.

DYLAN DOUBT

So this one time, I was in Phoenix with the RDS team, and we’d just gotten rained out of a pretty epic spot. We were driving away and after about five minutes, I spotted an incredible double rainbow. “Wow! That’s a really fucking amazing rainbow!” I exclaimed to the crowded van. The 45 seconds of awkward silence that ensued was immediately followed by hysterical laughter, finger pointing and taunting. Despite this, we pulled over and everyone got out to admire one of god’s prettier little illusions. “Yeah, double rainbows are kinda cool,” someone sheepishly remarked, and someone else shared a story about another epic rainbow experience they’d had. In the end we all held hands, took off our clothes and danced in the mud for a while. Ok. We didn’t dance, but there were some shirts off and we did return to the van feeling a little better about the world around us. This isn’t that rainbow, but another one, not quite its equal, but pretty good, right?

SHANE HUTTTON

When asked to pick my favorite photo for this magazine, many came to mind. Most of them had better compositions, better lighting and a select few could even classify as art-fag material. At the end though, I picked an old photo of even older friends. I have to remind myself every now and then why I still skateboard at 31. Photos like this make it easy. You will probably never hear about Gary but he is one of my favorite skateboarders - look at the style on that kickflip! Gary McHugh kickflips and Pierre-Yves Gauthier waits for his turn, while Jeff Falconer and Chris Connolly amuse themselves like the children they are.

SETHFLUKER

This photo of Ryan Smith was taken six years ago in Barcelona, Spain. He had just rolled his ankle while trying to switch frontside heelflip the big four at MACBA. At the time, I had no idea that this moment would play such a significant role in the following six years of my life.
