What is the 7th Grade TIP? • • • •
The TIP is a Talent Identification Program. It started in 1972. The goal is to identify gifted youth and provide them with advanced academic opportunities. To qualify, students must excel on either the SAT or the ACT as 7th graders.
What are the benefits of participating in the TIP Program?
• Recognition as a TIP Scholar! • A well-established and widely-recognized honor • Invitations to participate in advanced academic programs • Attention from recruiters at top universities • A jump start on preparation for the SAT & ACT!
• Take the SAT. • Both exams test math, reading, & vocabulary. • The sections on the ACT are longer and more dense. • Plus, the ACT tests material that the students have not yet seen (imaginary numbers, trig concepts, matrices, logs, etc.). • The SAT has shorter sections, is less densely packed, & tests more general thinking skills.
Which SAT should I take?
• Take the January SAT, if possible, or the SAT that comes right after the course ends. • The January SAT gives the student more maturity going into the exam. • The January SAT allows for more individual preparation over the holiday break.
• Accelerate content knowledge in math, reading, and grammar. • Learn strategies and methods for timed tests. • Improve communication with SAT Vocabulary. • Get a jump start on “real” SAT preparation • Enhanced performance in math and language arts classes
(Data from 2011-2012 7th Grade TIP) SAT (one of the following): o 520 in Math o 510 in Critical Reading o 500 in Writing
• ACT (one of the following): o 20 in Math o 20 in English o 21 in Reading o 21 in Science
