– Special Thanks – The Know Your Rights Camp "Chi Town Resource Map" would not have been possible without the efforts of Elgin Bokari, Christopher Petrella, Mo Beats, DKeo, Eliza Solowiej, Mathilda de Dios, Jacob Hollis, First Defense Legal Aid, and Free Write Arts & Literacy. Words cannot express our deep gratitude.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
During police encounters it is important to do your best to stay calm and to understand that you have legal rights. Our hope is that this card not only provides you with knowledge of your rights but also the resources to make it home alive to your family and friends. Call 1.800.LAW.REP4 as soon as you or someone you know is arrested by the Chicago police. First Defense Legal Aid is open 24/7/365 and offers free legal aid while in Chicago police custody. www.first-defense.org • If you are stopped or questioned for any reason, then you have the right to know your rights. • You have the legal right not to speak and you have the legal right to a lawyer. To invoke these rights simply say: “I will not talk; I want my lawyer.” • Do not say anything other than your name, date of birth, address and phone number to reach a parent/guardian to a police officer without first speaking to your lawyer.
