THE HUMANPOWERED GUIDE TO AFFORDING KNOX

WAYS TO THINK ABOUT THE VALUE OF A KNOX EDUCATION 1. IT’S AN EDUCATION THAT’S INFINITELY ADAPTABLE We’re one of the most diverse, international colleges in the country. Our professors and programs are intentionally collaborative, crossdisciplinary, and rooted in experience. So our students know how to engage with different cultures, how to adapt to new information, and how to find proactive, pragmatic solutions to global problems. In other words: They know how to be an effective member of the 21st century.

2. IT’S AN EDUCATION THAT WORKS We apply our knowledge in organizations and businesses and communities around the world, through research, internships, study abroad, service, and leadership. Experiential learning is a required part of our curriculum. The result is a diploma that stands for something and a resume packed with tangible experience.

3. IT’S AN EDUCATION WITH POWER Our alumni include the chairman and CEO of Ford Motor China; the cocreator of BASIC, the foundational language of computing; Emmy Award–winning broadcasters and Pulitzer Prize–winning reporters; a presidential chief of staff and a president of the United Nations General Assembly. We’re a top producer of Fulbright winners, Peace Corps workers, and successful Ph.D. candidates. Knox graduates are open-minded, kindhearted people who happen to be pioneers. They’re an essential part of our human-powered community, doing work that powers the world.

WAYS IN WHICH WE’RE COMMITTED TO MAKING KNOX AFFORDABLE 1. WE WERE FOUNDED ON THE IDEA THAT COLLEGE SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE REGARDLESS OF THEIR FINANCIAL MEANS We’re guided by that idea today. About 77% of our students receive some form of financial aid.

2. WE OFFER MORE THAN $40 MILLION IN FINANCIAL AID EVERY YEAR For families with an income of $125,000 or less, our awards range from $21,000 to $49,000. Most of our families pay a good deal less than the actual cost of Knox.

3. WE’RE PROUD TO OFFER A RANGE OF SCHOLARSHIPS THAT RECOGNIZE STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS IN ACADEMICS, ARTS, SERVICE, AND LEADERSHIP Academic scholarships, for example, range from $2,000 to the full cost of tuition. Scholarship recipients can also be eligible for need-based financial aid.

4. WE MAINTAIN A SANE, SUSTAINABLE COST OF EDUCATION The net price of a Knox education has increased 2.3% over the past 5 years— enough to account for inflation, but no more.

5. WE MAKE THE RIGHT LISTS US News & World Report named Knox one of its Top 30 “Best Value Schools.” Washington Monthly placed us among the top 15 liberal arts colleges “doing the most for the public good.” And we’re a perennial presence on the Forbes Grateful Grads Index—a testament to our alumni’s continued confidence in the value of their college investment.

QUESTIONS THAT EVERYONE ASKS (PLUS ANSWERS!) 1. CAN I AFFORD KNOX? We’re here to make sure that Knox is within your reach. Students from all financial backgrounds attend Knox. Our financial aid program is designed to offer you a financial aid package that takes into account your family’s needs.

2. SHOULD I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID? Yes! You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by applying. We’re eager to show you what’s possible.

3. IS THE PROCESS COMPLICATED? No. At Knox, it’s a two-step process: Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online; and then complete the Knox Financial Aid Application. All together it should take a couple hours; and it could change a life.

4. WHAT DO MOST AID PACKAGES CONSIST OF? Our aid packages typically include grants, scholarships, federal student loans, and student employment. Grants and scholarships do not have to be repaid. Student employment can include a job on campus or in the community to help pay college costs.

5. CAN I ESTIMATE MY COST OF ATTENDANCE NOW? Yes. Start at knox.edu/affordability. You’ll find links to pages about cost, scholarships, and financial aid, and a tool designed to give you a rough estimate of what your family would pay at Knox.
