“Our Family Serving Your Family”
If you are covered by a typical insurance policy, you may be paying too much and paying for the wrong kind of coverage. Standard automobile policies may not offer Agreed Value Coverage, so in the event of a loss, you will be offered a settlement amount (Actual Cash Value) less than what it will cost to replace your “pride and joy”. There’s more, standard auto policies don’t always give a price discount for the “care, custody and control” you give your collector automobile. In short, standard auto policies do not reflect an understanding of how fine collector cars are maintained and enjoyed.
However, we at Farris Insurance Agency Inc. can offer you an insurance program that really demonstrates the value and the uniqueness of your vintage or classic car(s). We can give you a better solution by working with experts who are collectors themselves. Grundy Worldwide, Hagerty Insurance and American Collectors, have been insuring these special vehicles for almost 50 years. We provide peace of mind protection to over 4000 car collector individuals and families.
Program Features: • Coverage for individual cars and collections. • Agreed Value Coverage. • High liability limits. • Unlimited “hobby” mileage. • $0 deductible, NC has $50 deductibles. • Prompt, fair claim service. • Competitively priced. • Excellent customer service. We have 30+ years writing collectors and collections.
It’s time to save some money, get a great rate on your collector car and have the “peace of mind” that comes from a job well done!

Sitting pretty to utter doom in just three years by: Thom Taylor DeSoto was killing it in 1957. People loved their stunning styling. Fins and flash were in, and Chrysler’s line of affordable sedans offered plenty of both. DeSoto enjoyed healthy sales—178,594 in all—even as its rivals struggled. Yet the company was being squeezed from within and without, undercut by more luxurious Chrysler products, increasing competition from established brands like Chevrolet and an upstart called Edsel, and a slowing economy. Just four years later, Chrysler would kill the brand. The last DeSoto rolled off the line on November 30, 1960.
reissued 1942 cars. It soon offered sleek, modern models like the Firesweep, Firedome, and Fireflite. The lineup was redesigned in 1955 by Virgil Exner, who gave all of Chrysler’s cars his “Forward Look.” People loved the styling, especially the massive fins—with triple taillights—and snapped up the cars. DeSoto saw sales jump by 7000 in 1957.
The cars offered as much go as show. The hemi engine was good for 345 horsepower, or an impressive one pony per cubic inch. Torsion-bar front suspension, a new Torqueflite automatic transmission with push-button Walter Chrysler launched the brand shifting, and a convertible model in 1928 and named it for Spanish made the DeSoto Adventurer a explorer Hernando de Soto. particularly popular model. Chrysler wanted a line of cars to compete with mid-priced models DeSoto had some serious from the likes of Oldsmobile, problems, though. The first was Studebaker, and Hudson. spotty quality control. Its cars suffered from leaky windshields As with all American automakers, and rear windows, weak torsion DeSoto essentially stopped bars that occasionally broke, building cars during the War, and splitting upholstery and flaking the 1946 models were merely paint, and other problems.
DeSoto faced more pressing issues, too: the more upscale Chrysler Windsor was cheaper than anything it offered. It also saw increasing competition in the mid-priced segment from Ford, Mercury, General Motors, and Chrysler’s own Newport lineup. All of this came about as the nation slipped into a recession that clobbered Detroit. DeSoto saw sales fall 60 percent in 1958. Eager to stop the bleeding, Chrysler merged DeSoto with the new Chrysler-Plymouth division and stopped building DeSotos in a dedicated factory. It wasn’t enough. DeSoto celebrated its 30th anniversary by selling just 45,700 cars. Even as all of this was happening, Chrysler’s so-called Special Car Committee started developing what would become the company’s first compact cars, the Plymouth Valiant and Dodge Lancer. The automaker soon realized it couldn’t afford five marques, so it dedicated a large portion of DeSoto’s development, sales, and management resources to the new endeavor. DeSoto offered just two models, the Adventurer and Fireflite, in 1960. Chrysler announced its decision to kill the DeSoto on November 19, 1960 and decided to produce a two-door and four-door DeSoto—neither car was given a model name—until it ran out of parts. Those 3034 cars were a hodgepodge of bits and pieces, snatched from the Chrysler Newport parts bin. Anyone who’d ordered a DeSoto but didn’t get it before the parts finally ran out received a Newport instead. In that way, sadly, the last DeSoto wasn’t even a DeSoto.

Who is Jerry Gulley? Jerry Gulley got his first performance automotive experience in the 1960's doing engine swaps in his home shop. Starting in 1960, he worked in a heavy metal production shop, doing layout and fabrication on pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and other manufacturing equipment. He became a certified welder, doing Stick, MIG, and TIG welding on mild and stainless steel, plus exotic alloys such as Hastelloy.
Gu
During this time he was active in drag racing - starting with a Corvette, and graduating to building and driving Altereds and alcohol funny cars . He also did tune-ups, built drag cars for other people, and sold speed equipment on the side. Jerry retired from the fabrication shop in 1999, and got into tool sales. This was a natural progression for him, since his on-the-job training taught him what does and doesn't work, and the value of using topquality tools and equipment.
It all started with dad.

Pinstriping and Lettering: The Lost Art Pinstriping and Lettering: The Lost Art by David “Hivoltz” Richards David “Hivoltz” Richards is a self-taught pinstriping artist who signs his nickname to all of his work, which can be viewed at www.pinheadlounge.com. He can be reached at (540) 293-9980 or hivolts540@verizon.net.
Quality pinstriping takes lots of practice, but if you dedicate yourself to it and market it well, you can make it a thriving add-on business. A good pinstriper has to have a trusty set of paint, hardeners, reducers and brushes.” Let’s talk a little about products. Whether I pinstripe a car, bike or some kind of panel art, I use a good wax and grease remover to clean the surface and follow that up with Windex. A clean surface will make or break you. As for paint, hardener and reducers, I use 1 Shot products. A lot of people will tell you that you can use regular thinner to thin your paint, and that may be your preference, but 1 Shot makes a reducer that works great with their paint. As added insurance, never use the thinner or reducer you clean your brushes with because it could have oils in it and leave you with fisheyes. The end result is you wiping off your work and starting over. In time, you’ll learn that, as with anything, practice is the key to quality pinstriping. Pricing and Brushes You would be surprised at the reasonable cost of these products. As for what to charge, it’s up to you. Everyone isn’t doing this art form, but everyone wants it, so do the math. Brushes are something else to consider. When I started, I had to have one of everything out there. And believe me, everyone has their own brush. I prefer a Mack 00 Series 20 automotive touch-up brush, but it’s up to the individual artist. Again, practicing and experimentation
1. I start by getting my center line on the panel and making a pattern from my vinyl plotter (or by hand, if you wish).
are key. The 20 Series will cost you about $9 apiece. Some guys like the 10 Series, which are made with different hair and cost twice as much. Do your research and try some different ones out there. Brush care is easy – just clean your brushes with mineral spirits and make sure you oil them. As for lettering brushes, do your research and try what’s out there. Hand lettering is not for everyone, so I would advise sticking to pinstriping because that will keep you busy enough.
I transfer my pattern onto the panel using saral transfer paper.
The people I try to target as potential customers are hotrodders, bikers and tractor trailer drivers. Others will do a lot of panel and garage art and sell it on eBay. There’s money to be made, but again, research is key. Canvass your local and out-of-town As you can see, I’m only using a Dixie car shows; the best way to get your cup to hold my paint, as it only takes work out there is through word of a little to do an entire job. I start out mouth. with the lettering. It’s very important to do this first if you’re outlining the Step by Step lettering because you want to give the paint time to dry. You definitely don’t Let’s go through a project step-bywant to work over wet paint. step to give you an idea of how striping works. First, let’s look at the products I’ll use: • Paint thinner (for cleaning brushes only) • 1-Shot reducer • 1-Shot hardener • 1-Shot lettering enamel, whitebright red • Wax and grease remover (but none for this project because the panel is clean enough) • Windex • Mack 00 20 Series pinstriping brush • Small lettering quill

After filling in all the lettering, I take my fine line tape and, as before, get my center line for the design. I like to do my designs freehand, but you can draw them out and transfer them, too. Some jobs require you to do this, but you end up doing the job three times.

carried away. Trust me, less is more; it’s easy to overdo it.
Next, I use my Mack 00 Series 20 striping brush. After I clean it, I dip it in the paint and pallet the brush back and forth to make sure I get the paint up in the ferrel of the brush for proper flow. Palletting back and forth, adding reducer for proper consistency, you want it to feel somewhere between melting ice cream and syrup. In other words, you want the paint to have some drag to it.
Once I finish outlining, I start adding some white to the design for balance, trying not to get too carried away. When using red and white, the white can kill the red if you’re not careful. I add just enough white to balance it out. Then, I will add a white border to match the red Have Fun
I use a compass to get my perfect circles. Keep in mind these designs will get easier as you practice and develop your own style. Once I finish the design, I add a border to it and maybe some more red.
I start by pulling lines on each side of the tape until I get my center. Once I have that, I fill out the design, trying to be symmetrical and adding balance to the design without getting
I start with adding my outline to the lettering. This takes some time and a lot of practice, but it’s a lot of fun and it adds to the panel.
Remember that pinstriping should be fun, but be careful: it can also be addictive! Whether you want to make it an add-on business at your body shop or just do it as a hobby, it’s a wonderful art that has been around for years and isn’t going anywhere any time soon. So grab a brush and a can of paint and get to practicing!

TEENS DISCOVER A FORGOTTEN MUSEUM OF VINTAGE CARS IN BRAZIL Whenever a collection of vintage cars is discovered somewhere in the world, it always feels like it might be the last, or at least it is increasingly rare and unlikely.
things in motion as well, since the local police took an interest (the young people broke in illegally after all).
Then comes another discovery. This time, the scene took place in Brazil, when a group of teenagers entered a building without permission, only to find the remains of an old private museum of vintage cars. The abandoned cars within were covered in dust.
The vehicles, in turns out, belonged to a private collector. The building also houses a section containing technical documents, automotive parts, gas pumps and even a replica of a restaurant-café.
Being teens, they then decided to film the whole thing through WhatsApp, and that's why we're able to share it with you today. The notoriety of their little break-in set other
Among the vehicles discovered there, we find models dating from the 1920s to the 1970s, including a Ford Model T, Citroën DS, Chevrolet Corvair, Fiat 124, Renault Dauphine and even a Hudson Hornet.

Cars We Remember: Top 10 favorite pickup trucks By Greg Zyla More It may not be a surprise to most readers that sales of pickup trucks in all shapes and sizes continue to deliver major profits for manufacturers in America and Canada. Included are perennial full-size bestseller Ford F-Series, followed by Chevy Silverado, (Dodge) Ram, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan. All make tough built pickups and most these days are four-door crew cabs that double as family movers. As for the popular work trucks of the 1940s through the 1970s, these older
trucks may not offer modern day amenities or extended cabs, but they sure are gaining in collector popularity as the years go by.
in the U.S. and Canada and analysts expect a 4.2-percent bump up when 2018 sales are released. Nostalgic Favorite: 1953 Ford F Series.
So, here’s my “Top 10” list of pickups that made an impact on me along the way.
Dodge Pickups: Although the Dodge Brothers built pickups starting in 1921 in co-op with the Graham Brothers, the first Chrysler owned Dodge pickup appeared in ’29 and it’s been a big sales success since then. Even with a name change to Ram in 1981, Dodge/Ram is a solid choice and has even outsold Chevy’s Silverado the last few months of 2018. Nostalgic Favorite: 1972 Dodge Club Cab.
Ford F Series: The very first F Series truck built by Ford arrived in 1948 to much fanfare. Now in its 13th generation, the F-Series is the world’s most popular and best selling pickup. How popular? In 2017, 1,052,054 F-Series were sold
Studebaker E-Series: Growing up in the 50s, a day never went by without seeing a Studebaker pickup stop at my grandfather’s economy store in Ranshaw, Pennsylvania. Built from 1955 to 1960, these pickups were fairly priced and offered excellent return-oninvestment. Nostalgic Favorite: 1956 Studebaker Transtar. Chevrolet Silverado: With a history of building quality pickups starting in 1930, Chevy’s Silverado pickup made its initial appearance in 1999. The name “Silverado” was originally utilized as a trim name on both Chevy C/K pickups, Suburbans and Tahoes from 1975 through 1999. But then in 1999, the official Chevy Silverado version arrived and it’s never looked back as the “in model” for Chevy lovers. Nostalgic Favorite: 2003-06 Silverado SS. (Chevy SSR receives a nod here, too, built from 2004 to 2006 in hardtop/convertible pickup design.). GMC C/K: The GMC dates back to 1902 as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in Pontiac, Michigan. When General Motors purchased Rapid Motor in 1909, it became GMC and to this day specializes in trucks of all shapes and 30 | Shades of the Past 2021

sizes. Unlike the Chevy dealers, the Buick-Olds-Pontiac-Cadillac dealers needed a truck to sell, and the GMC franchise filled the void. By 1920, GMC began sharing platform time with sibling Chevy and it’s been that way ever since. Nostalgic Favorite: 1957 (single headlight) 1958 (dual headlight) GMC pickup.
Rancheros were loaded with car amenities, but still deserve mention. Nostalgic Favorite: 1958 Ranchero. Dodge Little Red Truck: In 1978 and 1979, Dodge introduced the Lil Red Express high-performance truck, complete with a powerful 360-inch V8 and lots of special goodies that
the youth market loved. It deserves a spot on my Top 10 for sure. Nostalgic Favorite: Any 1978 or 1979 Lil Red Express trucks. Greg Zyla writes weekly for More Content Now and GateHouse Media. Contact him at greg@gregzyla.com or at 303 Roosevelt St., Sayre, PA 18840.
International Harvester (IH): From 1902 to 1986, IH was a successful firm specializing in farm tractors, farm equipment and trucks. By the 1960s, the trucks were very popular and featured many light and heavy duty versions. They are still around today as Navistar Freightliner and are still a major player in the big truck business. Nostalgic Favorite: 1956 C-Line two or four-door pickup. Jeep Pickups: Known mostly for its Wrangler, early station wagons and then Cherokee style models, Jeep Pickups were very popular over the years until they stopped producing them. The good news is that Jeep is bringing back a 2020 Wrangler platform pickup this April called the Gladiator. The last Wrangler based pickup dates back to the 1986 Scrambler. Nostalgic Favorite: 1980 Jeep ½ Ton Pickup. Willys Overland: Although Willys had a full line of Jeeps, cars and wagons that date back to 1903, they also impacted the pickup truck market in a big way through the 1930s with a line of solid-built light and heavy duty pickups. By the 1950s, the Willys 4x4 pickup was billed as the “Go anywhere truck” and became a popular workhorse. Nostalgic Favorite: 1952 Willys 4x4 Pickup. Ford Ranchero: Although half car and half truck, I’ll give a pat on the back to Ford for introducing the 1957 Ranchero a full two years before Chevy’s ElCamino. 32 | Shades of the Past 2021
