Fashion, Style, Are you trending.... All of us, men and women, are concerned with what to wear, how we look, am I shopping at the right stores, is this material high end, and on and on..... Much of the era for great fashion came at times of great struggle (the depression and wartime). It seems when life was the toughest fashion and style took on a whole new meaning. Most women during the depression era made their own daywear out of rationed fabrics. So creativity was a must. Each expression of their own sense of style and fashion did have a ‘blue print”, and her name was Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel. “In oder to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” Chanel was driven to combine comfort and casual elegance in themes of simple suits and dresses as well as women’s trousers. Opening her shop in 1912, her designs were influential as her career sored in the ‘20s and ‘30s ; and who can forget the “little black dress”. “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. ith the ultimate goal of creating buzz and giving a relevant outlet to fashion houses, buyers, and culture enthusiasts, Knoxville Fashion Week is back and featuring 5 nights of runway shows from March 1st through 5th 2016. The event is hosted by Gage Models & Talent, who has grown it exponentially since it’s inception in 2012.

As excitement builds for this event, we’ve provided spotlights on several of the talented designers who will be showcasing their looks on the runway.

t Knoxville Fashion Week, the children’s runway shows are fun to see. Returning this year is designer Stephanie Marcelle of Nastershum. She describes her designs as “mixed up moxie” and enjoys creating children’s clothing that keeps kids looking like children--but smart and slightly eccentric children. The inspiration behind her designs is her daughter, Olivia. Stephanie says, “My daughter has quite the beautiful art brain and in order to fulfill her sense of style at 7 years old, the average won’t do. My child and my desire to nurture her in her adventure to be exactly who she is, and mix life up exactly how she wants to, is what has inspired me…along with bringing an old soul into children’s garments.” Stephanie looks forward to seeing the kids walking in the clothing down the runway. She feels nothing beats a kid loving what you have made. Her designs can be found locally at The Southern Market in Bearden. nspired by classical art, Rose describes her designs as luxury dresses for classy women, unique in both design and the embellishments. This will be her first Knoxville Fashion Week and she looks forward to seeing her clothes on the runway and the audience’s reaction to her work. As a local budding designer, her designs will soon be available for sale with a Facebook page in the works.

lush pink has always been my favorite so I’m not quite sure why it’s

taken me so long to snag a blush pink coat! I think sometimes I might over think things a little too much and can never pull the trigger. Luckily my mom decided to pick this one out for me this past Christmas so it took the decision making out of my hands and I just love this one from J.Crew! J.Crew can doe no wrong in any of their winter coat selections, and unfortunately all the good colors in the good styles sell out pretty quick (including this one-still currently available online), but I’ve also had my eye on this one from Nordstrom and even Banana Republic, so scoop them up quick before it’s too late! FASHION TIP Jeans are now so versitale from play to work to evenings out, it’s important to keep your denim collection up to date, especially if you wear jeans multiple times a week. Vegetable Red Thai Curry Ingredients 1 Eggplant Diced with Skin 1 Bunch of Broccoli chopped 1 Bag of Snow Peas 2 Thinly Sliced Green Bell Peppers 1 can of Bamboo Shoots 1 Can of Coconut Milk 1 Cup of Vegetable Broth 1 Jar of Red Curry Paste 2 Tbsp Grated Fresh Ginger Root 1/2 cup chopped Fresh Basil Himalayan Pink Salt 2 Tbsp Coconut Oil

Directions Using High Heat in a large Wok or Deep Skillet melt 2 Tbsp of Coconut Oil then add Eggplant and Peppers. Sauté Eggplant and Peppers for a few minutes then add Broccoli, Snow Peas, continue to sauté until vegetable are tender. Reduce Heat to medium low then add 1 can of Coconut Milk, Vegetable Broth, half the jar of Red Curry Paste, and Bamboo Shoots. Let the vegetables simmer for 10 minutes to absorb all the flavors. Finish the dish with freshly chopped Basil, and Ginger. Salt to taste then serve! (You can also add Chicken or other protein and serve with Brown Rice if you like.)

Cream together 2c butter and 4c sugar in a mixer. Add in 18 egg whites or egg white substitute. In a separate bowl, whisk together 8c all purpose bleached flour, 3 tbsp baking powder and 1tbsp salt. Add dry mix to mixer and blend on low speed. While mixing, add in 2 1/2c champagne and a few drops of pale pink food coloring. Do not overmix. For the frosting, cream 1c unsalted butter. Add in 1/2 tsp vanilla, 4 tbsp champagne, 4c powdered sugar. Mix until firm but not soft. Add more or less powdered sugar until you have the right consistency. A Q&A with Erick Baker: The Musician, the TV Show Host, the Family Man

In the wake of a successful two-night stint at Knoxville’s Bijou Theatre and the upcoming release of his album “Dear Amanda,” local singer-songwriter Erick Baker sits down to talk about life, love, and the importance of family.

Q Tell us about what’s been going on with you recently. A So it was 2014 and I was at a point where every step forward in my career was a step

away from my family. So I decided to take a break from music, take a break from the road and focus on my family. Fast forward two years later, and my marriage is stronger, I’m a much better father, much better friend, hopefully a better son and brother, and now music is back in my life. So I caught my breath, the dust settled, I refocused, and I started working on these tunes.

Q How did your wife feel about sharing Valentine’s weekend with all of your fans? A She is an amazing woman. She’s gotten used to sharing me. They’re not just my songs

Q Would you call “Dear Amanda” a love letter? A It is a love letter. But it’s also me looking in the mirror and seeing where I’ve fallen short.

and her songs – they’re our songs. And people have made them their own and brought them into their lives. When I was writing them I was thinking about my emotions and what I was going through, but then when the rest of the public then says, ‘Man, that’s exactly how I feel,’ then it’s no longer my song – it’s our song. I’m very transparent. I try to be up front and honest with my songs, so she’s used to sharing our relationship. So sharing Valentine’s Day with 1,400 people is fitting.

I’ll close my eyes and I know the man I want to be, and then I open my eyes and see the man I am. I’m working to be the best version of myself. It’s a celebration of the good – that’s the love letter side. But it’s also a realization and a self-evaluation. In the liner notes, it says, ‘Breathe deep. Don’t try and save your breath, ‘cause no one knows how many we have left. Our days are numbered, but it’s up to us to make them count.’ And for me, that’s what it’s all about.

Q What does your daughter think of the album? A That’s funny you ask that, because just the other night I asked her, “Who’s your favorite singer, honey?” And she goes, “Daddy.” But hopefully Daddy isn’t just a singer-songwriter, he’s not the one who’s on stage – he’s the one reading her bedtime stories.

Q Take us through an average day in the life of Erick Baker since your PBS series Tennessee

Uncharted. A Tennessee Uncharted gives me the opportunity to get outside almost everyday, which for the last decade, touring the world as a singer-songwriter, I’ve only seen passing by through a windshield. On a daily basis, the show has allowed me to rediscover how great Tennessee is one outdoor adventure at a time. So far, I’ve been hunting, fishing, hang gliding, white water rafting, kayaking, dirt bike riding, and wake surfing just to name a few. Not to mention, I’ve been able to stop and see some of the most beautiful places and eat some of the best food in the state. Basically, the show has turned an average day in the life of Erick Baker into an extraordinary one.
