from theeditor | With so many musical greats that have recently died it is a question everyone is defining. The most common definition goes something like this... an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. But is much more than one can define. My musical journey begin 40+ years ago and has been one of my greatest passions in life. It was no surprise when I chose music as my college major focusing on Vocal Performance and Sacred Music degrees with a minor in sound engineering. I have been blessed to also play a vast range of percussion instruments since the age of 5. I tried other instruments Sax, Flute, Trumpet, and Piano (which can be classified as a percussion instrument) but always came back to “drums” and my voice. With that bit of brief history I can convey without being understated I have a great appreciation for all types and genres of music ranging from Opera to Rap. Yes I listen to Merle and like most my age was overwhelmed by Prince. Along with many others present and past the expression of music never dies. -

Dear Moms, One day a year, just one. It’s astounding to me that there’s just one day designated for your lifetime of love. As infants we might spit up on your new sweater, or sob uncontrollably through the night even if you work in the morning. In elementary school we might come home with notes pinned to our backpacks saying we were disruptive in class, or ate something we shouldn’t have. When we get to middle and high school we might fake being sick to get out of going to school, or miss a couple curfews. When we go to college, you might cry, worry, or pack your bags for a celebratory cruise. But we need you to know we depend on you – from infancy to adulthood. You are the hug we miss getting every day after school, the critique we need to remain humble, and the fan we need to feel beloved. Mom know that not just this one day, but everyday, that you are wholeheartedly beloved for these reasons and the reasons we have yet to discover.

Spring is in full swing and the beautiful weather provides the perfect time of year for weddings, galas, dances, red carpet events and other formal occasions. While the idea of getting dressed to the nines is exciting, there are many options and you may be wondering what exactly is in style for formalwear. To answer this question, I pulled in a local expert: The Gilded Gown, Knoxville’s premier special occasion shop. I visited the Gilded Gown and tried on a variety of gowns before settling on the perfect one in blue lace with an embellished waist for an elegant photo shoot. In doing so, I garnered tips from the team at The Gilded Gown in selecting the perfect, stylish formalwear this season.

s:

Style Tip

Lovely Lace: Lace is a trend this season and you’ll see it everywhere from head to toe lace to lace trim. Not only does lace provide a romantic and sweet look, but it’s a look that suits any age. Bold Embellishments: Bling is in. Sequins, crystals and jewels provide show-stopping sparkle. While some may desire the look of head to toe shine, a gown with strategically placed embellishments can provide a lot of pop. Dare to Bare: Illusion gowns, gowns with cut-outs and gowns with leg slits are perfect for those who find a daring yet elegant look appealing. Illusion gowns have sheer panels that look like skin to give the effect of a bare back, sides or neckline, and cut-outs or leg slits show just enough skin to be tasteful yet becoming. Artful Accessories: While the gowns are lovely, accessories complete the look. A bracelet and earrings that complement the sparkle in a gown draws attention to the face and creates the perfect pairing. Looking for an opportunity to see more examples of what is “in” for bridal, prom and formalwear fashion?

Design Tips for Rugs Shae Seeber

Owner/Interior Designer

Fixer Upper’s Magnolia Home Furnishings

rea rugs are one of the easiest ways to decorate and update your living space. Simply by switching rugs with the change of a new season, adding a rug to soften the feel and look of hardwood floors, or even going so bold as to layer rugs to add visual interest and dimension you will find that incorporating rugs into your home decor will be the perfect finish. Rugs are a basic yet powerful way to add layers, textures and style to a room and bring the whole room together. Shae Design Studio is excited to be a retailer of Loloi rugs and inspired by their forward thinking designs and setting the standard for the most current industry trends. We choose to partner with Loloi as they feature an extensive line of contemporary, transitional, traditional and indoor/outdoor rugs. Recently, they announced a new line featuring Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper’s Magnolia Home Furnishings. We were invited to their April launch party at High Point Furniture Market and enjoyed picking out some amazing rugs, pillows and throws to carry in our newly expanded Design Studio and Retail Showroom. So stop by and see us, our designers and interior stylist will help you add impact to your living space with a new and fresh area rug.

[While] While British singer-songwriter James McCartney may have been born into a family with a strong musical background, it wasn’t until his early adulthood that he truly began to embrace his natural calling. Son of famed musician Sir Paul McCartney and musician and photographer Linda McCartney, James was thrown into music from his very birth. As a child, he spent the majority of his pre-school years on the road touring with his father’s group Wings. Once he started school, McCartney led a relatively normal life. It wasn’t until he grew older that he began to grow more interested in music, playing on his father’s album Flaming Pie in 1997 and contributing to his mother’s posthumous release, Wide Prairie, in 1998. McCartney took his mother’s death hard, taking quite a few years to himself to recuperate from the loss. It wasn’t until the late 2000s that he really began to focus on his music again, working for some time honing his craft in the privacy of his own home. In fact, he played his first live performance in only 2009, referring to himself

under the stage name Light at the Weekend for World Peace and Meditation in Iowa. In the following year, McCartney parted ways with his stage name and released an EP entitled Available Light under his given name. After the release of a subsequent EP along with a compilation release of his first two EPs, McCartney finally dove in full force in June of 2013 with the release of his debut full-length album, Me. Now, almost a full three years later, James presents the world with his second full-length endeavor, The Blackberry Train, an 11-track album that is set to debut on May 6. Speaking about his inspiration from one album to the next he says, “It’s all been an evolution. This set of songs definitely has a harder edge, but it’s a continuation of the last album. The main thing for me is to not conform or compromise.” Those two elements are especially important to James, following in his father’s own footsteps. As you may imagine, being the son of one of music’s most influential musicians can have its ups and downs. His father has had much to do with his

releases, guiding him through the composition process and producing his work. While he understands that people may always compare his music to his father’s work, James’ music speaks for itself as far as his individuality is concerned.“I just try to enjoy myself and be as honest as I can. My mom and dad always told me that,” he says. An undeniable sense of honesty can be heard in all of McCartney’s tracks. In “Prayer” specifically, he sings, “She makes me fall madly in love with her. What can I do except pray these prayers to you? What can I say when I’ve given it all away?” There’s no denying James’ music has strong similarities to his father’s work from time to time – it’s as if James took the groovy, psychedelic overtones of The Beatles, grunged it up a bit, and threw in a touch of modern indie rock flair. The album kicks off with “Too Hard,” an upbeat, sunny tune that opens the release with a welcoming tone. It’s peppy and jangly in the most memorable way. While this track may be similar to his previous work, tracks like “Unicorn” do take on a heavier tone. The tune is catchy in a Brit punk-pop sort of way. It’s complete with high-energy drumming and scratchy guitar riffs. With tracks like these, he veers away from his previous singer-songwriter style and more toward outright rock ‘n’ roll.

Track Listing • Too Hard • Unicorn

As far as the album title goes, he says it simply came to him in a dream. The entire album has a dream-like, psychedelic atmosphere to it. McCartney interweaves groovy guitar progressions with catchy lyrics and eccentric compositions to create something that tests genre boundaries and nods every so often to his Beatles heritage. The track “Alice,” for instance, is a psychedelic nod to Alice in Wonderland. His songs are roving and move in unexpected, enjoyable directions at the drop of a hat. They’re creative and innovative, much like the music of his father. The release’s fifth track, “Ballerina,” is a slow, waltzing tune that starts out light and builds as the song progresses, ultimately leading to a final chorus where McCartney is left crooning only the word “ballerina.” It’s the little moments of brilliance like this that pop up throughout the album that will leave your jaw on the floor. The release concludes with two of his more laid back tracks – “Prayer” and the aptly titled album ender, “Peace and Stillness.” The variations between these softer tracks and the heavier ones like “Unicorn” or “Paralysis” make for a nice juxtaposition. The Blackberry Train was engineered by Steve Albini, who has previously worked with acts like

Nirvana and The Pixies, and it is already receiving much acclaim – for good reason, too. The album is a rewarding journey from start to finish and is sure to receive much more critical acclaim, as did his debut release, Me. Some of the most memorable moments include “Peyote Coyote,” “Alice,” and “Prayer.” McCartney likes to think of his music less as being a particular genre and more as a form of expression.“It has elements of the avant-garde and psychedelic, a lot of emotions. In the end, I don't really prefer a particular style, just great music, truly.” McCartney is currently on a solo tour of the U.S – only his second ever tour of the States. His goal while touring is to keep his shows as intimate and personal for his fans as possible. In order to do that, McCartney will not have a band backing him at shows; rather, it will be little more than him and his trusty guitar on stage during the night. McCartney’s extensive U.S. tour kicks off on May 10 in California, winds across the entire country, and concludes on June 27 in Nebraska. He will be playing at the Open Chord in Knoxville on Sunday, June 5. Seating will be limited, so arrive early. As far as what fans can expect when they come

to see McCartney play, he says, “I’ll be playing songs off the new record and some other stuff. It will be an amazing and beautiful experience.” If James is anything like his father, the show is guaranteed to make for an unforgettable evening. Advance tickets are still available both at the Open Chord bar as well as online at www.openchordmusic.com.

CAR WATCH 2016 Ford Mustang GT Mustang has always been about power. The 2016 models continue in that tradition. Each engine delivers at least 300 horsepower.

America’s love affair with their automobiles is taken to the max in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee every year during the many Car Shows that visit the city and cruise the city streets and back roads. Pigeon Forge has a six-lane Parkway with a wide median, sidewalks on both sides, and a grassy divider between the parking lots, that make it an ideal place to cruise your six and eight-cylinder hot rods and to park and show them off. The grassy area by the sidewalks is perfect for placing a lawn chair to watch the gorgeous vehicles cruise the street. And the roads and back roads of Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Townsend and Cherokee are also great for taking your four-wheeled baby out for a pleasant spin, listening to the hum - and occasional roar - of that finely-tuned engine. Car Shows, or Rod Runs as they are also called, are a great place to visit if you have built or rebuilt a classic car, you are looking to buy a beautifully restored car or classic car parts, or you just enjoy seeking the sleek steel rods with the highly polished, multi-layered paint jobs shining in the sun. Here are the shows that visit Pigeon Forge every year.

Allium

Spotlight on

Alliums or ‘ornamental onions’ come in all sizes and colors—from giant globeshaped purple spheres to delicate yellow sprays. The best part is that deer, squirrels, voles and rabbits find them foul-tasting. Here are some awe-inspiring alliums to add to your garden this year.

F

or discerning gardeners, ornamental onions are indispensable additions to the spring and summer bulb display. And now’s the perfect time to plant them. Alliums (aka “ornamental onions”) comprise a marvelous group of plants in the lily family always underutilized by gardeners. From Allium aflatunense to Allium zebdanense (literally from A to Z), most don’t have common names but there is an allium for all. Allium’s various forms from bodacious and big to shade-loving delicacies make them valued by gardeners in any venue. The giant globe-shaped flowering types are whimsical and fun while the shade-loving species are delicate and sublime. Their flowers’ colors range from lavenders and purples to pink, yellow, blue, burgundy and white. As they are in the same genus as the culinary onion, they contain the same properties that make them unpalatable to garden pests like deer, squirrels and voles.

r o o d n I w e AN Gym That ! s k c o R y l l a Re

Written by Margaret Easterly

Onsight Rock Gym (Photo courtesy of Onsight Rock Gym)

Step 1: Get Your Foot Off The Ground I was a tad weary when asked to write an article on the new Onsight Rock Gym. Walking into the gym, I thought, “What am I getting myself into,” as I gazed upon the 52 foot climbing wall in front of me. When I met with Yolanda Chen, the founder, I warned her about my lack of knowledge in this department. But she assured me rock climbing is in fact a sport for everyone. I laughed explaining further that my upper body strength is the equivalent to that of a ten-month-old infant. She then told me a story about their recent opening that put my weariness to rest. Onsight holds the value of family high. That being said, Yolanda’s father-in-law insisted on being involved in the opening of the gym. He just wanted to learn how to belay people off the wall to help out. They trained him and got him certified. When the opening came, the team insisted that he climb the wall. It took some encouraging words, but they started with step 1 and got his feet off the ground. Yolanda said, “When he reached half way he was beaming.” As a 70-year-old man, he never thought it was possible. His testimony had me thinking, “Hey now, I can do this too!” Once that first step is complete, Yolanda claims the climbing “bug” is easy to catch. It is not just about the exercise – it is about the community and inspiration. She caught the bug ten years ago, and even started traveling around the world with it – Greece, China, and Canada, just to name a few. Opening Onsight was her way to bring the bug to Knoxville. I inquired why she opened in Knoxville? Yolanda then explained to me that East Tennessee is a huge hub for outdoor recreation, and Knoxville is centered in the middle of it all. When her family grew, she knew this was a “bug” she wanted her kids to catch as well.“Climbing gets kids

off the couch, away from the video games, and gets them active,” she further explained, “There’s a mental aspect of climbing that continuously brings new challenges.” Onsight has a private climbing room for kids, where they can host birthday parties or just have some good ole fun. I asked Yolanda, “For kids who are terrified of heights, like myself, how do you encourage them?” Yolanda responded, “It’s always the kids who are hiding behind Mom, who need the most encouragement. We don’t push them, but if they do get on the wall that’s when you hear the cheering and feel that inspiration.” Onsight, also, gets kids involved through a summer camp program. Kids ages 6-8 can attend a week long session in which, Onsight says, “Week by week, they will grow and develop as individuals, learn valuable lessons on and off the walls, build self-confidence, and cultivate a self-driven love for staying physically active and healthy.” Onsight provides an encouraging atmosphere, where kids are urged to reach their highest potential and the highest wall. Yolanda stated, “It is all about improving yourself as you climb the rock, or plastic in this case.” However, as Yolanda’s father-in-law proved, Onsight is not just a great spot for kids. It’s a social hub for adults as well, equipped with 52 foot climbing routes, a child watch room, college nights on Mondays, live music, free coffee on Saturdays, fundraising, a rotating art gallery, and an upcoming yoga room. Onsight is setting itself apart by creating a community and updating the gym atmosphere to a social one. The first step to creating that is getting peoples’ feet off the ground, but the second step is engaging with the community. Yolanda explained to me how the community grows on the walls. She started with the differences between the standard garden-variety wall and the boulder wall. Climbers are attached to belays on the standard wall, while focusing heavily on their own route and next move. The boulder wall, on the other hand, holds a different task for climbers; it involves interaction with other climbers. Since climbers are not attached to a rope for this wall, it is more of a free-range climb. Climbers then are posed with the challenge of not only figuring out their next move, but also the moves of the climbers around them. And it is there the community begins. It really makes you wonder about the “oh if these walls could talk” phrase.

Those walls are eager for more stories, so if you are looking to push limitations, join a life-long sport, gain a community, increase your mental and physical capabilities, or send your kids to summer camp, your step 1 is heading down to Onsight Rock Gym. Meanwhile make sure to follow them on Instagram and like them on Facebook: @onsightrockgym

nspired by two very special grandmothers with a fondness and talent for baking pies, Scott and Meredith Layton opened the original Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop in Knoxville, Tennessee at its current location on Parkside Drive in 2012. And, with great pride in their family’s time honored recipes and traditional baking methods, Scott and Meredith quickly became known around Knoxville and all over East Tennessee as the bakers of the most delicious pies in the area.

Giving back to the community is central to what Scott and Meredith are all about. It’s how they were raised. And, as a result, the shop’s “Pie it Forward” was born. Each month the location donates a portion of proceeds from the sale of one particular pie to a local charity or non-profit organization. “As much as we love the smiles on people’s faces when they taste our pies, we cherish the opportunities we have to give back to organizations close to home. The Pie it Forward program also allows our Buttermilk Sky customers and fans to get involved as well. It’s about community for us.”

Spring is my favorite time of year. Our world is exploding with fresh color after a cold monochromatic winter. The temperature is comfortable and the sun is bright. So let's get out and take some pictures! There is a myth that you need an expensive DSLR and a big lens to take great pictures. That's simply not true. Those thing certainly help, but it's more about technique and understanding your camera's limits. The modern smart phone camera is perfectly capable of capturing some fine photographs. The nice thing is you always have it with you. Sure, I prefer my Nikon DSLR with a fine set of lenses. However, it's quite the load to carry around everywhere. There is an old adage that says the best camera is the one you have with you. So here are a few tips to make your spring photo fling a big hit. 1. Zoom . . . with your FEET – A good photo has a main point of interest. If the frame is full of distractions, your photograph will lose it's impact. Since most smart phones don't have optical zoom, your best option is to zoom with your feet. Get close to your subject. Fill the frame with simple goodness. The pinch to zoom feature you find on your phone is known as digital zoom. You are basically cropping your image causing loss of pixels and detail. Besides, zooming with your feet is good exercise. 2. Good lighting – This is where knowing your camera's limits come in. Have you ever taken a picture of someone and the background is too bright and your subject is too dark? The scene may look fine when you look at it with your eyes. However, what the camera sees is totally different. This is know as dynamic range. It is the value between the brightest and darkest areas. The human eye's dynamic range far exceeds that of your camera. So we must compensate for it. A tip for photographing someone with that beautiful sunset behind them is to tap on your subject before taking the shot. No, I don't mean physically tapping your subject. You may get smacked! I mean taping on your phone's screen to tell it the area that is most important. Your camera isn't smart enough to make that decision. You are. Most cameras will then adjust to give your subject the best exposure it is capable of producing. Your background may end up too bright. But at least you'll be able to you kids wonderful smile. 3. Golden Hour – Speaking of sunsets, the best time to take photos is the hour before sunset and the hour after sunrise. This is called the magic or golden hour. When the sun is close to the horizon it produces nice long shadows and fills the face with golden light. The worst time to take photos, at least portraits, is at noon. The sun is straight overhead giving harsh shadow and those terrible raccoon eyes. Since the brow shades the eyes in those conditions, it produces dark sunken eyes. So if your going for that dead raccoon look, shoot away. If that's not an option, try using something with a white or silver surface to reflect light into your subjects face creating a fill light. The silver heat reflector you put in your car window works great. Exception alert! If it's a cloudy or overcast day, feel free to shoot anytime. It's like the sky has given you a giant softbox that will produce beautiful even light. Remember the whole dynamic range thingy. 4. Composition – Where you put your subject in the picture can make a huge difference in the stability of your photo. The most basic rule of composition is what is known as the rule of thirds. The human mind tends to find things grouped in threes. So if you place your subject dead center of your frame, you will likely have an image that's not that interesting. Many cameras have what looks like a tic-tac-toe board imposed on it's camera screen. That is to help you see the frame laid out into thirds. Where the lines cross indicate the strongest points to place your subject. To a lesser degree, if you place your subject on just one of the lines, you will still add strength to your subject. Tip – place your horizon on either the upper or lower third of your frame. Don't put it in the middle. I hope you find these tips helpful. Just implement them into your next photo shoot and you could be the next Art Wolfe . . . whoever that is.
