Leaving a Legacy

The terms “legacy or legendary” are used so frequently these days and when we think of these terms we usually think of an amazing accomplishment. While this is an accurate term one may not realize we are all leaving a legacy behind and greatness is not in just an act or accomplishment, it is or should be a way of life. As we have read numerous articles and material on Pat Summitt, our Vols, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and took a look back at the past year of the publication, I have continually thought about this term. With the death of Pat Summitt this term has been used in every article, news report and interview and is most appropriate when you look at the achievements of her life. However, I feel that is more resounding when you look at who she was and the character in which lived. When I sat with Jalen a year ago at Tennova Fitness center, where he was interning to learn about marketing and advertising, I got a brief glimpse into the character of this young man. I started off the meeting asking “So you play for the Vols”. He responded with a quiet “Yes ma’am”. Then I asked “So what position do you play? Jalen: “Linebacker ma’am”. Me: “So is that defense? Jalen: “Yes ma’am”. I never let on that I knew exactly who he was or my love for our Vols. I wanted to see if you took away what he was known for, how would he react. Not once did he become agitated at the questions. He showed he was much more than a Vol “football star”. He was and is a respectful, full of joy, and amazing man with hopes of leaving more of a legacy than can be measured in stats. As I look at these examples and back over the past year of all the incredible individuals I have met through the publication, I wonder what is it that I am leaving behind. Am I giving my best? What kind of legacy am I leaving? While I may never be an athletic super star, as Pat Summitt has said, “If I’m not leading by example, then I’m not doing the right thing. And I want to always do the right thing.” I am not sure what most will remember me for. I hope my legacy will reflect the effort that I give to doing my best in this life. I have many failures and I know that I will make more mistakes in the future. I just hope my character prevails. -

And that’s just to name a few. Throughout her 38 years of coaching, her awards exceed double digits. It is an exceptional record of achievement, which led her to become the most winningest NCAA D-1 basketball coach of all time. Although this distinguished list sets Summitt apart, her basketball career is not her only win. Summitt stated, “You win life with people.” Her reel of highlights revolved around people and winning relationships. 1,098 winning games – one cannot look at that number and not stand in ovation. On the court she guided 161 Lady Vols to victory. However, her intent with these relationships went beyond the area of the court. Summitt was determined to lead her Lady Vols to victory; she wanted them to succeed and be gracious in all that they did. Her team of 161 had a 100% graduation rate. She abided by her “Definite Dozen” rules to success and advised her team to follow. 1. Respect Yourself and Others 2. Take Full Responsibility 3. Develop and Demonstrate Loyalty 4. Learn to Be a Great Communicator 5. Discipline Yourself So No One Else Has To 6. Make Hard Work Your Passion 7. Don’t Just Work Hard, Work Smart 8. Put The Team Before Yourself 9. Make Winning an Attitude 10. Be a Competitor 11. Change Is a Must 12. Handle Success How You Handle Failure These guidelines do not solely apply to the confines of the

court. She inspired people in all sectors of life to succeed and strive for greatness. Success does not come easily. Pat made this clear. It comes with a willingness to fail, then rise up and shoot again. Fans and admirers of Pat look at her records and are hard-pressed to find a missed shot. Even her lost games are admired, as the crowd knew Pat would come back with an undefeatable game plan. Failure and success were handled with grace and humility, as was her diagnosis with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. On August 23, 2011, Summitt publically announced her newest and most relentless opponent yet. She was unscathed by her opponent, as she stated she was fine and continued to coach. Her loyalty to her team was unmatched by this opponent; she was determined to coach for three more years. And the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, “backed Pat” unanimously. The seven-time SEC Coach of the Year’s victories, leadership, and dedication for Rocky Top was unwavering. Alzheimer’s was not going to prevail – it did not abide by the “Definite Dozen.” Its road to success was blocked and barricaded by a monsoon of orange and white. When Alzheimer’s swiped her memories and urged forgetfulness to take over, Summitt and her team stood firmly against their opponent. Summitt thoughtfully cultivated her next game plan – the Pat Summitt Foundation. In November 2011, she and her son Tyler Summitt formed the foundation as an effort to uncover innovative research for Alzheimer’s. Her game plan was executed flawlessly as she gained numerous supporters and donations. The winningest coach announced, “I thought I would be remember for winning basketball games, but I hope I am remembered for making a difference in this disease.” Pat dedicated her life, as she did to basketball, to making a difference in the lives of people. She committed herself to finding a cure; she would succeed by following the “Definite Dozen.” On June 28, 2016, our coach played her final game. Pat Summitt won. She won with people, her relationship with Christ, and the “Definite Dozen.” Rule eleven stands true, “Change Is a Must.” In the sea of orange and white, there is change, there is success, and there is a cure. The Pat Summitt Foundation has partnered with The University of Tennessee Medical Center to produce the Pat Summitt Alzheimer’s Clinic. This clinic is expected to open in December 2016. In May 2012, Sarah Van Sickle founded Beauty Hunters. Her purpose is to redefine the way women perceive their own beauty. Van Sickle states, “This is beyond a physical goal; this is about women coming together to redefine beauty.” She began saying she will instill selfesteem in 250 women. However, the attendance has exceeded her initial goal. Beauty Hunters has gained over 2,700 supporters on Facebook from the Knoxville area alone. We believe God has given us the mission to be that voice in the women who come to Beauty Hunters workouts.

What would you say to a woman who was too embarrassed to take that first step toward fitness? We have all been there. And we’ve all been the girl at the gym who has no idea what to do with all that equipment. We have one class in a gym. The rest are outside at area parks. Are Your Child’s Eyes Ready for the New School Year? Myopia, or near-sightedness, is increasing world-wide. In the US, the prevalence of myopia is approximately 40% of the adult population. High myopia can increase the risk for many eye problems including glaucoma, retinal detachments, and cataracts. Extensive research has been done to determine the cause and possible solutions for this growing epidemic.

It’s that time of year again. As our children acclimate to the new school year and adjust from the relaxed schedule

of summer, we as parents attempt to make this transition as seamless as possible. School supplies, clothing, new backpacks, and yes, doctor’s visits.

Proper Nutrition is an Integral Part of a Healthy Lifestyle! I have many patients ask me, “What is the best way to keep my long term weight loss goals from taking the back seat to my busy family life?”. It is a question and struggle that almost all of us have had at some

point. The best advice that I have is, in one word, “pre-planning”. Yes, planning for the week ahead does take time and thought. As the week unravels, you will be singing your own praises because you were able to conquer time and logistic obstacles with healthy food alternatives. What I recommend to patients is, to grab some snack-sized sealable bags and divide fruits, vegetables, pretzels, granola, etc. just before the week begins. Measuring out items into these bags provides you with a reasonable portion and you know exactly how many calories you are consuming. This is convenient for side items for a work lunch or for a snack while you play chauffeur to your children’s activity schedules. If you must grab something from fast food or at a restaurant, make good decisions. Choose a side salad instead of fries. Order your sandwich without cheese, mayonnaise, or other high calorie sauces. If there is not an option for a breaded bun substitute, only eat the top or bottom side of the bun. If you order a salad, make sure it isn’t covered with cheese, croutons, bacon, and/or other high calorie/fat items that sabotage the whole purpose of eating a salad. Make sure the salad has a lean protein on it if it is an entree. Only add small amounts of the dressing to the salad as needed, instead of the whole package. Chances are you won’t even use half of the portion provided to you, and you just saved yourself lots of calories. Small changes add up to big results!

Today my thinking isn't quite as simple as my 10 year old self, yet years later through lots of life changes and plenty of design dilemmas, I do still find inspiration thinking through and creating inviting spaces. Inspiration comes in many forms and often in my down time I am pouring through a wide range of design magazines, there is something about holding glossy pages and studying the details that awaken my creativity. I also follow many designers on social media as well as read blogs that help me stay current and study trends. Traveling to the seasonal showcase home markets in both Atlanta and High Point are influential as a designer but I find being invested locally to design happenings right here in our own city the most rewarding. I can't wait to share with you design happenings in Knoxville each month. You're invited to come along with me and be inspired together celebrating and uncovering the many platforms of design in our very own city. Downtown Knoxville is my starting point. I am looking forward to touring the East Tennessee Community Design Center's (ETCDC) 2016 Home Tour, focusing on urban homes with outdoor spaces in eight different downtown buildings. These residences range in design style from modern to traditional while each sharing a common feature, having some type of unique outdoor space. I talked with Gayle Bustin, who is on the board of ETCDC and is spearheading this event. Bustin has traveled and lived all over the world but it was from her early childhood years traveling with her family to the great Smokey Mountains that planted an East Tennessee yearning among all her life travels. This area grew with her until she decided to settle down and retire. With original plans to build closer to the mountains, she and her husband caught the vision of downtown urban living. They bought a condo in the Holston almost 9 years ago and rented it until time to permanently reside there. When the time came to make downtown Knoxville home, they stayed in the building, kept the rental but bought a bigger place to call home on the 12th floor. Her home will be featured in the tour as well as that of her neighbors, the only other home shared on the 12th floor Holston. Having the opportunity to talk with Bustin about urban living, I couldn't help to wonder for someone who has lived and traveled on almost on every continent, what it is like to settle in downtown Knoxville. She says her experience of living abroad is consistent to the diversity she finds downtown. It's the eclectic mix of culture and families that rather than divide, unites and brings a common connection among the people. I also ask the all too often and most frequently asked question... but where do you grocery shop? Being a mother and having a family, that seems to be my pitiful but honest fear of urban living. Bustin likes to keep it local and shops at the Farmer's Market and other nearby places but when she need things she can't find there, she hops on the free trolley to University Commons right passed campus. Her answer calmed my fears and seemed rather charming instead of dutiful to think of grocery shopping by way of farmer's market or trolley ride. Above all, she enjoys the neighborhood feel and says it is "more than a community but truly a village". She doesn't just pass her neighbors on the road, but frequently is out with them enjoying their presence and socializing together in the city. She rarely uses her car these days and gets around biking, trolleying or walking. It's these moments, living in the present among people in her community that leave her encouraged to reside in such a great city. Bustin has lived all over, and is thankful to return to a place of childhood memories and call Knoxville home. I'm meeting a friend and heading out to tour downtown Knoxville homes at the Urban Home and Garden Tour. Hearing Bustin share about urban living enlarges my vision and makes me excited about having fresh eyes and gaining a broader influence in design. JALEN REEVES-MAYBIN Ready To Leave A Legacy At Tennessee By Scott Herpst

SPN recently came out with its list of the Top 100 college football players for the 2016 season. Making their list, at No. 77, was Tennessee senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin. Fans in Knoxville would argue that No. 77 is way too low. On a defense stocked with talent going into the 2016 season, there may be no one more important than Reeves-Maybin. The Northeast (Clarksville) High product has established himself over the past three seasons as one of the top defensive players in the entire Southeastern Conference. He earned a spot on the league’s Pre-Season Media Days All-SEC Team at first team linebacker after ranking seventh in the conference in total tackles (105) as a junior. A total of 14 of those tackles went for a loss and he ended the year with six sacks. He played in 11 games as a true freshman, but became a starter the following year, racking up 10 total tackles in his first-ever start, a win over Utah State. He hasn’t come out of the lineup since, having been a starter for the past 26 consecutive games, and head coach Butch Jones named him as one of four permanent team captains for the upcoming season. But it was Jan. 12 of this year when Reeves-Maybin permanently endeared himself to Big Orange Nation. After seriously considering to forgo his final year at Tennessee for a chance at the NFL Draft, Reeves took to Twitter to announce his decision. “The truth of the matter is, my biggest childhood

dream was to be a GREAT college football player,” he posted. “Yea, I was taught as a kid, ‘good is the enemy of great’….So y’all got me for one more season and it will be nothing short of GREATNESS.” At SEC Media Days, Jones spoke highly of his senior standout, as well as senior defensive back Cameron Sutton and junior running back Alvin Kamara, who also opted to spurn the NFL for one more season in Knoxville. “Jalen spoke in front of the team when we had a team meeting,” Jones recalled. “And I think you’re starting to see the dynamics of our football family and how close this football team is. He stood up and he said he made a pact to his mother and he had a dream growing up that he would leave a legacy at the University of Tennessee. And he said, I have not left a legacy. I have done nothing yet in my career at the University of Tennessee, and I have one more year to get it done. “And I think when you have that type of leadership — and Cam Sutton, what can I say about him as well. And Alvin Kamara. He had an opportunity to leave as well. And I think when you have individuals come back, that speaks volumes that they believe in your football program and they believe in their teammates and they love representing our university and our institution and our state.” With fierce determination and fiery intensity on the field, and a pleasant, likeable personality off

of it, Reeves-Maybin has drawn comparisons to legendary UT linebacker Al Wilson, a fan-favorite who many considered the heart and soul of the Vols’ 1998 National Championship team. Like Wilson, Reeves-Maybin stands just six-foot tall and weights close to 230 pounds. And like the ex-Jackson Central-Merry product, ReevesMaybin commands attention and respect when he addresses his teammates and he has the total trust of his coaches. “Some of our team meetings have been very, very dynamic. And I’ll tell you a story,” Jones said at Media Days. “In the spring, I had Jalen come to my office. He said, ‘Coach, I’ve put together a video, and I’d like to show our football team.’ And usually I want to proof the video, but I had so much faith and confidence in him, I said okay, go ahead. So he walks up to the team and put together a 25-point video on his own. The first thing he did is he showed clips from different games of himself, whether it was a missed tackle, whether it was a missed communication, a missed fundamental in coverage, and it started with him. Then he proceeded to go through all of the critical plays -- offense, defense and special teams. And a football play can come down to two to three plays that mean the difference between winning and losing, and you never know which play it’s going to be. That play could be in the first quarter. You just

never know. That’s why you play every play like it’s your last.” Jones said “You always have to learn from the previous experiences and past experiences. It’s something we spoke about ever since we started that offseason program and just what does it take in pointing defining moments out in the game. But when we talk about leadership, we always talk about it’s better to be a playercoached team than a coach-coached team.” The buzz surrounding Team 120 has been growing ever since Jan. 1 when the Vols absolutely blasted No. 13-ranked Northwestern, 45-6, in the Outback Bowl. It continued in early August when the Vols were ranked in the Top 10 of the USA Today Amway Coaches Poll — their first Top 10 appearance in the poll in nearly 10 years — and the Vols were one of four teams, along with Alabama, Florida State and Clemson, to receive at least one first-place vote. And with other standouts like quarterback Josh Dobbs, running back Jalen Hurd, defensive tackle Derek Barnett and special teams standout Evan Berry all back in the fold, and with Jones pulling in some of the top recruiting classes in the nation, expectations are high among the Vols faithful that an orange-and-white checkered flag is in view, signifying the end of Tennessee’s long road back to the top.

1892 In the second season of University of Tennessee football, the Vols played their home opener on the new “Curry Field”. Supposedly, the orange & white colors were inspired by the American Daisies which grew on The Hill, the home of most of the classrooms at the time.

1903 The 1903 team, coached by H. F. Fisher, had only 14 players. 1914 Zora Clevenger coached the 1914 team. Home games were played on Wait Field in front of more than 2000 fans. 1925 Home games were now being played on Shields-Watkins Field on 15th street (now Phillip Fulmer Way). 1938 #37, Bowden Wyatt led the team to a perfect 11-0 season. The coach was General Robert Reese Neyland, who was by now in his 11th year as head coach. Even though Neyland left Tennessee for the armed forces for the1941-45 seasons, he still coached the team for a total of 21 seasons.

1942 The 1942 team was coached by John Barnhill and went 9-1-1. #62 is in honor of Clyde “Ig” Fuson, who was killed in WW II in December 1944 and whose number is now retired. Tennessee did not field a team in 1943, but resumed play in 1944.

1951 The 1951 Tennessee squad is the stuff of legend and was Tennessee’s first outright National Championship team coached by General Bob Neyland. #27 was worn by All-American tailback/halfback Hank Lauricella who finished 2nd in Heisman balloting.

1967 Coached by Doug Dickey, the 1967 team won the SEC Championship outright with a perfect 6-0 record. #75 honors all-SEC offensive tackle John Boynton. 1971 This 1971 jersey honors #7 Condrege Holloway who actually starred at Tennessee from 1972-74. The 1971 squad was coached by 2nd year coach Bill Battle, who was only 28 when he became head coach. The 1972 season saw the first night game at Neyland Stadium, a 28-21 victory over Tennessee Volunteers.

1983 The 1983 team was coached by Johnny Majors. Tennessee was captained by #92 Reggie White, an All-American tackle and legend in his own time. 1989 Johnny Majors, in his 13th of 16 seasons, was head coach. Team captain was All-American offensive guard Eric Still. #79 honors Eric Still who played all 4 years 1986-1989. 1995 #16 honors the legend, Peyton Manning, who as a sophomore in 1995 led the team to an 11-1 record. Manning won 39 of the 45 games he started and finished his career as Tennessee’s all-time leading passer with 11,201 yards and 89 touchdowns. The coach of the 1995 team was former player, Phillip Fulmer.

1998 The 1998 Tennessee team went 13-0 in a single season and thus laid claim to the National Championship - their first in 47 years - beating Florida State 23-16 in the Fiesta Bowl. #37 honors wide receiver Peerless Price whose catching helped lead Tennessee to the Championship.

2007 The 2007 team was coached by 16th year coach Phillip Fulmer. #86 honors senior tight end Brad Cottam who was selected in the 3rd round of the 2008 NFL draft. 2009 [NOT PICTURED] Tennessee brought back its black alternate jersey (for the first time since 1920) with contrasting orange accents against South Carolina. Black was actually the Vols’ primary uniform color from 1911-1920. Orange pants, now used at home with orange jerseys as an alternate and on the road at times, made their debut in 1977.

2013 [NOT PICTURED] Tennessee unveiled its five jersey combinations less than a month before Butch Jones coached his first Vols game, and after wearing orange pants at Oregon and going with the all-white look at Florida, the Vols will wear Saturday the fourth combination in their first six games.

In 1983, the owner of the Grand Hotel, Ken Seaton, searched for new ways to fill hotel rooms. And so, the Grand Rod Run was born. Seaton hired a promoter to run the event, while he tended to the hotel. Since 1983, several promoters have run the show. Byron Cooper, corvette extraordinaire, along with his brother became promoters, known as MCS Promotions, in 1991. However, Seaton still owned the show, then known as The Grand Run. Today, there are three partners: Rod Milligan, and brothers, Bryon and Ronny Cooper. These three partners collaborate and keep the show running. Milligan owns ET Graphics, which is a major automotive apparel supplier. ET Graphics supplies all the merchandise sold during the now Pigeon Forge Rod Run, along with most major East coast automotive events. While Milligan supplies the merchandise, the Coopers focus on corvettes. The Coopers own Coopers Corvette Center in Knoxville and hold the “Corvette Expo” in Sevierville during March and in Loudon during October. Over the past 33 years, the Coopers and Milligan expanded the Rod Run into one of the largest automotive events in the Eastern US. The show generates millions of dollars for Pigeon Forge and takes place twice a year in April and September at the new LeConte Center. When the Grand Hotel closed in 2013, the partners switched the location of the show and changed the name from The Grand Rod Run to Pigeon Forge Rod Run. In late 2013, the new LeConte Center was built and secured a place for future shows. MCS Promotions has claimed dates through 2026 for April and September events. Since MCS Promotions moved the show to the LeConte Center, the show has more than doubled in size. The Grand Hotel lacked the space for growth. When they moved the show, they gained a 100,000 square foot space for vehicles and free parking for spectators. Not only did the show gain space, but it also gained recognition. Many celebrities, including Cindy Howard (Shirley), Christi Lee (All Girls Garage), Courtney Hanson (Power Block TV), and Bryon Cooper’s favorite, Dennis Gage from “My Classic Car TV,” have made appearances. People come from over 1,000 miles away to view the Rod Run’s unique collection. Unique vehicles such as “The Dracula” and “The Koach” from the 1960’s show called The Munsters have made their way to the Pigeon Forge run. Eddie Munster even held a meet and greet with the vehicle. In September, spectators can expect to see the original Bat Mobile replica and Jim Mitchum from the movie, “Thunder Road.” The Coopers and Milligan only expect the growth to continue.

From 1921 to the end of the 1967 season the field surface was natural grass. In 1968, coinciding with the addition of the East Upper Deck, Tennessee-Turf (TartanTurf-3M) was installed as the playing surface, in part to provide better drainage. Since 2007, the entire surface of Shields-Watkins field gets re-sodded annually with Bermuda Tifway 419, which rests on a 12-inch bed of sand and pebbles to enhance drainage. The particular hybrid Bermuda grass is also used on golf courses, other athletic fields as well as home and commercial lawns. The field is mowed 62 times a year and is irrigated 42 times a year from May through November. About 756,000 gallons of water are applied to the field annually at an estimated cost of $1612.80 The turf is maintained through several processes such as irrigation, aerifying, fertilizing, liming, dethatching, topdressing with sand, and insecticide and herbicide application. When cold weather sets in, the Bermuda grass goes dormant and ryegrass takes its place. Annual costs of maintaining Shields-Watkins field is around $10,000 annually. However, that figure represents the field only, not the stadium itself.

A Partnership That Provides {To End Hunger}

The Scarecrow Foundation’s mission, as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is ending hunger in America through entertainment and promotion. In order to make this mission possible, the foundation partners up with various hunger agencies and food pantries. These partnerships enable The Scarecrow Foundation to promote and bring awareness to certain causes. In an effort to put an end to hunger, they have partnered with The Love Kitchen. Since 1984, Helen and Ellen Ashe, the Love Kitchen founders, sought out to make a change. Helen saw a broadcasting of Church Street United Methodist’s soup line. Immediately, Helen knew what her mission was: she would “help feed God’s children.” Ellen joined in with her mission, and they moved forward with the ideals of their parents in mind: • There is only one Father and that is the Father in Heaven. • There is only one race, the human race. • Never take the last piece of bread. Someone may come by in need of it. On Valentine’s Day in 1986, The Love Kitchen launched. The sisters served 22 people that day in a small church. Today, the love has spread with a fair and humble hand. It expanded into its own building enabling the volunteers to serve many more people. Although they started off serving just 22, the Kitchen now provides around 3,000 meals each week to the Knoxville community. The Love Kitchen serves people whom Helen calls the five Hs, which are the homeless, homebound, the hungry, the helpless, and the hopeless. Each week the volunteers serve

80-120 hot meals in house, while delivering many other meals to homebound people. The kitchen works off of gracious donations and volunteers. Considering private donations and an unpaid staff run the organization, every bit of help and pennies contribute to the success of Helen and Ellen’s mission.

Meanwhile, The Scarecrow Foundation will host its 12th Annual Gator Hator week in support of the Love Kitchen. The Scarecrow Foundation encourages “entertainment with a purpose.” Entertainment is the driving force of the foundation’s promotion. Jimmy Buckner, executive director of The Scarecrow Foundation and Florida Gator himself, says, “We have a lot of fun bringing awareness to hunger.” And the Gator Hator event, certainly, exceeds the expectation. Mexican Sweet Potato Skins Ingredients:

6-8 medium potatoes (about 3 pounds) 1 pound lean ground turkey 1 jalapeño pepper, minced 1/2 to 1 cup guacamole or 1 sliced avocado Green onion and cilantro for topping

Taco Meat Seasoning:

Instructions:

1/4 t. oregano 1/4 t. paprika 1/4 t. chili powder 1/4 t. onion powder 1/4 t. garlic powder 1/2 t. Himalayan pink salt 1/2 t. cumin 1/4 t. black peper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees, wrap sweet potatoes in aluminum foil. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until soft when squeezed. Remove from oven and allow them to cool enough to handle. Cut them in half lengthwise and use a spoon to scoop out center leaving a little bit of flesh. (You can use the leftovers to make mashed sweet potatoes for the next day!) Sauté ground turkey in a skillet until cooked, then add 1/2 cup of water with taco seasoning. Fill each skin with a heaping spoonful of ground turkey then top with tomatoes, jalapeños, and guacamole or avocado, green onion and cilantro. It allows us to put better content in and it also allows for our advertisers to be seen a little longer. [2] We realized that who we are as a magazine is always evolving. Whether it’s through slight variations in our logo or the content inside. We strive to bring East TN a great publication that is current, fresh, and most importantly - FREE!

[To recap.] It is hard to believe Hushh Magazine was started one year ago to showcase Knoxville’s “hidden gems”. As all publications, it began with an idea. Well not just one idea, but one after another, after another as creative director Tim Scarsella would not be content with just one publication. Tim presented me with several different publication ideas and while all would have been good, Hushh he said, “you know like Knoxville’s best kept secrets”, was the one that got my attention. The publication is free. We did not want to charge for the publication or give money for our articles to outside sources. It is an advertiser driven publication. I, along with creative director Tim Scarsella and office manager Cajun Graham, started Hushh one year ago to give the Knoxville area something new. Something without an agenda. No platform for personal opinions or political propaganda. Simply Knoxville, East TN stories about our area as well as the people and businesses that make it great. The idea was to be a boutique style book showcasing Knoxville’s best kept secrets. And as hard as we tried to make it a luxury boutique book, it just didn’t fit. We wanted to showcase all of Knox and the border counties not just one little area of Knoxville. So we allowed the publication to evolve.

Since then Hushh has transformed into much more than a simple boutique book. It has featured rising country stars such as Fairview Union, Tara Thompson, Karen Waldrup, Jimmy Charles, rock artist James McCartney (yes Paul McCartney’s son) and local artist Erick Baker. In addition to artists, Hushh has featured fitness star Jessica Bass and rising model Emily Presnell. The magazine also took on a roll dedicating each issue to local charities including, STAR (Shangra-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding), The Sierra Club, Alzheimer’s of Tennessee, Humane Society of Tennessee Valley, Young-Williams Animal Center, ALS, American Heart Association, and The Autism Achievement Academy. Hushh partners with a new charity each issue as a means to raise awareness and money for a multitude of local organizations. Hushh is grateful to work alongside The Scarecrow Foundation for this issue with a mission to help end hunger in America starting here in East Tennessee. The opportunity to work alongside these organizations has proven to be an undeniable valuable. In March, we set out to promote Gage Model and Talent’s Knoxville Fashion Week, which benefited the Autism Achievement Academy. Since the show, we gained a relationship with Gage Talent founder Jaime Hemsley along with Sarah Merrell of Gage Models and Talent whom coordinates the models, photographers, apparel, and locations for our Style section. She went above and beyond when organizing our last cover shoot featuring Emily Presnell. Hushh is blessed to work with such talented individuals. There has also been great learning experiences. “Shh” we will just keep that a secret. With the help of those like Sarah, the rest of the Gage Team, Katie Lee (of Pearls and Twirls), Open Chord and our other contributors: charities, advertisers, along with writer Margaret Easterly and AMAZING STAFF, we are able to make this free publication a successful reality. We greatly appreciate the huge amount of effort, support, and kindness that everyone involved has shown us. We came from very humble beginnings and have grown, in the past year, to one of the most distributed local magazines in Knoxville and the East TN area.

A Q&A with Erick Baker: The Musician, the TV Show Host, the Family Man

The release of his album “Dear Amanda,” local singer-songwriter Erick Baker sits down to talk about life, love, and the importance of family.

Q Tell us about what’s been going on with you recently. A So it was 2014 and I was at a point where every step forward in my career was a step away from my family. So I decided to take a break from music, take a break from the road and focus on my family. Fast forward two years later, and my marriage is stronger, I’m a much better father, much better friend, hopefully a better son and brother, and now music is back in my life. So I caught my breath, the dust settled, I refocused, and I started working on these tunes.

Q Would you call “Dear Amanda” a love letter? A It is a love letter. But it’s also me looking in the mirror and seeing where I’ve fallen short. I’ll close my eyes and I know the man

I want to be, and then I open my eyes and see the man I am. I’m working to be the best version of myself. It’s a celebration of the good – that’s the love letter side. But it’s also a realization and a self-evaluation. In the liner notes, it says, ‘Breathe deep. Don’t try and save your breath, ‘cause no one know how many we have left. Our days are numbered, but it’s up to us to make them count.’ And for me, that’s what it’s all about.

Q What does your daughter think of the album? A That’s funny you ask that, because just the other night I asked her, “Who’s your favorite singer, honey?” And she goes, “Daddy.”
