Fall ready your home.

Season of Change

Some refer to Fall as a spiritual season for balancing light and dark, letting go, and accepting the impermanence of things. Which is especially relevant during this fall season. With the presidential election a few weeks away. It is difficult not to get caught up in the “drama” that surround the process and is easy to loose focus on perspective. While both sides do their far share of “mud slinging” and debating it is still one of the greatest privileges we have as Americans. Please read the following excerpt of our 2 most beloved American documents.

A Guide to Th n Season’s Fall Fashio Trends

C

risp

fall

weather

and

brilliant foliage are here, signaling a changeover in apparel. This season

is richer and bolder than ever with luxurious textures, earthy tones mixed with pops of color and novel styling. Trends from last year have been taken up a notch and reinvented. Step out in style this fall and winter with these fashion trends: Leather

and

Suede:

Sumptuous

textures are in vogue this season with leather and suede. Dresses, skirts, pants, leggings, tops—can all be found in these sought-after materials. Typical brown and black are classic, but colorful leather and suede provide a more fun and bold look. Leather or suede accents on sweaters and wool jackets are also popular this season. Capes: This isn’t a super hero cape we’re talking about, although this style may have you feeling so chic you can conquer the world. This season, capes are everywhere: capes that look like blazers, capes with prints, capes with an edgy leather jacket look and even trench coat style capes. The wonderful thing about this style is it’s easy: it immediately adds a high-fashion look to an otherwise everyday outfit. A cape has volume to it, so to best wear this look, pair it with a leggings, skinny jeans or a form fitting dress or skirt.

Leggings: After being popular the last couple seasons, leggings are back— but even better. This fall and winter, leggings are even more striking with color blocking, sheer panels, embellishments and interesting textures. Daring leggings are most eyecatching when paired with a practical top, so that the emphasis is on the leggings. Peplum tops that are form-fitted in the waist and then flare at the hips look fantastic paired with leggings.

Top Colors:

The Pantone Fashion

Color Report for Fall 2016 reflects tranquility, strength and optimism. Along with anchoring earth tones there are exuberant pops of colors. Expect to see gray, taupe, clay, dusty pink and airy blue with vibrant colors like aurora red, spicy mustard yellow and lush meadow green.

Booties: Another popular trend that’s seeing a reemergence is booties. These ankle-high boots are perfect to pair with leggings and even dresses. For a casual look, flats or wedges are a great fit, or high heeled booties for a more refined look. Since bold is “in” this season, make booties a statement piece by choosing a vibrant color like red, deep blue or mustard yellow.

Bracelets & scarves: Bangle bracelets are bangin’ this fall as well as bracelet sets. Beautiful bracelets can add shine and color and complete an ensemble. Look for jewelry with tassels and bejeweled headpieces. And don’t forget scarves—the perfect fall or winter accessory. The right scarf can provide a pop of color, added texture or an interesting print to an outfit. Not to mention, a scarf will keep you cozy and warm! Get the Look: All apparel shown is by BCBGMAXAZRIA located upstairs at Dilliards in Knoxville’s West Town Mall (7600 Kingston Pike).

don’t forget hair & makeup: A new season brings more than new apparel trends—there are stunning and easy looks for hair and makeup this fall. For the best looks this season, I sought the expertise of renowned Knoxville hairstylist Aaron White of GEO Hair Lab and Bangs and Blush, a team of skilled beauty specialists. Their teams created looks for our models that are “in” this season, and very wearable: • Braids: This fall, ordinary braids are lackluster. Get inventive with braid like double Dutch braids, or French braid your hair on the sides and pull back into a pony tail. You can even braid the sides of your hair while keeping it longer up top for a faux Mohawk. • Buns: Like braids, try something different than the typical “ballerina bun.” Experiment with multiple buns, or even a row of buns down your head, as shown on our model. • Undercut: For both men and ladies, the undercut is popular. It’s the perfect combination of shaved and long—shaved on the sides but long on the top. There are many options from super edgy to toned down.

makeup: Push the boundaries with black eye liner and a full brow. Nude eye shadow palettes are a trend, but eye shadows in warmer earthy tones can provide a nice pop. Those seeking a more daring look can go tribal with strategically placed dots and lines. Get the Look: Book an appointment with GEO Hair Lab located at in downtown Knoxville at www.geohairlab.com. Makeup appointments are available by contacting Bangs and Blush at www.bangsandblush.com

Fall is Here, Don’t Fall Off!

ou worked hard for that summer body, don’t lose it now! As summer comes to an end we find ourselves back on a regular schedule with school and work. Now that the busy traveling months are over we can re-focus our attention to staying healthy. I’m going to give you some quick tips to getting back on track before the holidays hit and we ALL gain weight.

• Meal Prep: This is the most important aspect.

No one feels like getting off of a long days work to go grocery shopping and cook. It’s easy to just ‘pick something up’ on the way home. But if your meal is waiting on you, there is no excuse. Same goes for lunch and morning/afternoons snacks. Spend Sunday night preparing your meals for the week and you will be a lot less likely to eat out.

• Routine: Getting on a routine is very important Ask about our

What we do BEST

We have fun! We believe that to be committed to a lifestyle change like transforming your body in our KickFit Kickboxing class or learning Self Defense in our Krav Maga courses, you MUST enjoy it. Every work out, every lesson, and every interaction allows us to make our members healthier and happier.

We work as a team! At Bullman’s, we believe in something we all call “The Bullman’s Family.” We are all here to get better and encourage each other. All of our classes include either a partner or group component because science tells us that we will work harder when we are in a team. No judgement and no cliques, just good people getting healthier and happier as a team.

We get results! Because we believe that classes should be fun and challenging, our classes are incredibly effective for fat burning, muscle building, and learning self defense. Our KickFit Kickboxing classes and FIT circuit training classes can easily burn well over 500 calories in one session. Our Krav Maga can get anyone up to speed in self defense within 6 months

to help our bodies regulate. This includes eating, sleeping, and exercise. Eat at around the same times daily- letting your body know when it’s next meal is coming. Consistent sleep habits- keeping your energy levels equalized. Exercise- find the best time of day that works for you. (Tired after work- work out early, Not a morning person- work out later, Or the only time you have is a lunch break- do it then.)

• Smart Cardio Not Long Cardio: In order to

keep the fat off cardio is important, especially if we’re not eating “perfect.” People think of cardio being medium resistance for a long period of time. If we jog, for example, our body will actually store fat when we are recovering because we need that stored fat for long periods of exercise. Now if we change that to high intensity fro a short period of time our body will use glycogen for the short bursts and then burn fat when recovering. So change that jog into interval sprinting. This will maximize fat loss and will take no longer than 20-30 minutes.

Are you curious about Medical Aesthetic Procedures?

ometimes it is difficult for patients to have a conversation about aesthetics. It is my goal to make patients feel comfortable finding out more about this area of healthcare. For all of you who have been apprehensive to ask, I want to address the most common questions and concerns my patients have. I think there is a misnomer that these procedures are expensive and only for the likes of the wealthy or famous. I also find that many patients feel that having something done to improve their appearance is vain or selfish. My answer to both of these assumptions is that medical aesthetics is affordable for most and if having a noninvasive, non-surgical procedure performed makes you feel better about yourself, do it. If you can wake up, look in the mirror and love what you see on the outside, a new sense of confidence is developed on the inside. There is always a concern if the procedure will be painful. All procedures are performed in office and a numbing agent can be administered if necessary. Also, I find when talking to patients, there is a fear of looking “overdone” or “strange” like someone they may know or certain celebrities. I tell patients that “great aesthetics” is when you look like yourself, only better. Most procedures are subtle enough that the patient can see the change, but persons close to them can’t put their finger on the new, refreshed look. My patients tell me their friends and family think it is a hair or makeup change, and they laugh to themselves about their new rejuvenation secret. When trying to accomplish a natural-looking improvement, it is imperative to work with an experienced provider, who can implement expert techniques after first listening to and addressing your concerns. If you are considering aesthetic procedures, it is important to choose a licensed healthcare provider. Healthcare providers have received the necessary educational knowledge of anatomy and physiology to best accomplish beautiful results. At Premier Weight Management and Aesthetics Center we have a knowledgeable, professional staff who will work with you to reach your aesthetic and weight loss goals. All of our Certified Nurse Practitioners have advance training in all aesthetic services offered. They will be happy to answer any questions and offer their expertise to create a rejuvenated, beautiful you! the American Society Architects, fire pits, or the No. 1 requested design They add ambiance to a cool just sit and stare at a burning one for a lot less than you

feature today. Why not? evening, and it’s nice to fire. Plus, you can have might think. The simplest fire pit of all is little more than a metal bowl, which may or may not come equipped with a grill top — just in case you want to do a little outdoor cooking — and a protective screen cover. They’re great for small patios and courtyards. The fire bowl is the perfect size for a patio. The top prevents rain from getting into the fire pan, and its open sides allow you to add wood easily. Plus, you can get a stick close to the fire for roasting marshmallows. During the summer, these fire pits make great planters. Chimineas arrived on the scene back in the 1980s, and they remain as popular as ever. They don’t give off much heat, but the smell of burning wood adds a certain something to outdoor living. Good firewood includes pinion wood, alder, cedar, oak, hickory, mesquite, pecan and even fruit woods, such as apple and cherry. Don’t burn pressure-treated wood in a chiminea or any other fire pit or fireplace because it may contain harmful toxins. Fire pits are nothing more than a ring made from mortared limestone. Although you can’t see it, there’s a drain in the center that’s connected to a pipe running underground and out into the lawn so that rainwater doesn’t collect in the pit. Fire pits can be very simple and inexpensive to install. From start to finish, two people in just a couple of hours can complete, and the cost of materials being less than $100. FIRE SAFETY: When it comes time to actually start a fire, there are a few things to keep in mind, the most important of which is to keep your fire small. There’s no need for a blazing bonfire, and the bigger the fire, the greater the potential for disaster. First things first, your fire pit should be at least 10 feet away from any structure or combustible surface. Before lighting an outdoor fire, check the weather forecast. Avoid windy conditions that can blow embers. Also stay up to date on any burn bans or burn ordinances that might be in effect at different times during the year. Doing some house cleaning, like picking up leaves and other combustible materials, around the pit is important to ensure the fire doesn’t accidentally spread. Always have a container of water nearby and a garden hose on standby before starting the fire. To get a fire started, put a crumpled piece of paper or a store-bought fire starter in the pit, and cover one or both with small sticks — the smaller, the better. As the fire begins to burn, add larger and larger sticks until you’re finally able to add a log or two. But whatever you do, don’t try to start a fire with gasoline. It’s way too dangerous. The best way to extinguish a fire is to take the ashes, spread them over a larger surface area and let them cool down for a little bit. Then take your small container of water and gently pour it over the ashes, but monitor it. Don’t just throw some water on it and go to bed because it can flare up in the night. If you have a fire that escapes your fire pit and moves into a nearby pile of kindling or a combustible surface, immediately call 911. There’s no getting around the fact that wood smoke is a pollutant and that outdoor fire pits and fireplaces are completely unnecessary. In fact, in some cities, both indoor fireplaces and outdoor fire features of any kind are illegal. This isn’t just because of the potential for fires, but because of the pollution they produce. That said, the decision to burn or not to burn becomes, for many people, a personal rather than legal one. Regardless of how you feel about the subject, we can all agree that fires are far more decorative than functional.

e all want to do good. It’s human nature to want to be able to help another person we see that may need a hand. Every Christmas, you put coins and bills in our red kettles all across our community. It may not seem like much but it means new life – a second chance – for thousands of our neighbors.

England. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called “Simpson’s Pot” into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor.

The Salvation Army is celebrating the many reasons that motivate you to give. We call them Red Kettle Reasons and they represent all of the different thoughts and experiences that cause you to give so generously each year. HISTORY OF THE RED KETTLE NY Red KettleIn 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome — funding the project. Where the money would come from, he wondered. He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, and praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city’s poorest individuals on Christmas Day. As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool,

The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas. Six years later, the kettle idea spread from the west coast to the Boston area. That year, the combined effort nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy. In 1901, kettle contributions in New York City provided funds for the first mammoth sit-down dinner in Madison Square Garden, a custom that continued for many years. Today in the U.S., The Salvation Army assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods. Captain McFee’s kettle idea launched a tradition that has spread not only throughout the United States, but all across the world. Kettles are now used in such distant lands as Korea, Japan, Chile and many European countries. Everywhere, public contributions to Salvation Army kettles enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten. WHERE DO THE PROCEEDS GO?

Where do the proceeds from the Red Kettle Campaign go? They go to support the local ministries of The Salvation Army that include our Emergency Assistance Program, Men’s and Women’s Transitional Housing Programs, Disaster Relief, the Joy D. Baker Center for women impacted by Domestic Violence and for Homeless Women with Children, and our Rainbow Promises program focused on the needs of the children living at the Joy D. Baker Center. WHO CAN RING? ANYONE! We encourage everyone from church groups, civic groups and area businesses to school groups and teams to volunteer to ring bells. There are over 60 kettle locations in the Knoxville area and all need bell ringers. Contact Hannah Hankins at (865) 525-9401 to check availability and sign up.

Please share your reasons on social media by adding #RedKettleReason to all of your social media messages on places like Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. Thank you for your continued support!

You Get What You Give

the kickoff event for the Salvation Army’s “Red Kettle” and “Angel Tree” campaigns is the 4th annual “Rock the Red Kettle” Concert which will be featuring Knoxville’s own Erick Baker.

When I first heard Erick Baker was headlining this remarkable charity event, the first thing that came to my mind was a title off his new album, “You Get What You Give”. Granted, the song is not about the Salvation Army, but the song as well as his album “Dear Amanda”, are in a way about Salvationsalvaging the person he was and wanted to be and the relationships he has. Back before the album debuted, Erick had said that, “What I realized while self-evaluating in this album and looking over my relationships is that I’m a really good taker. I’m good at taking, but I’m not a very good

giver. Over the last two years, beyond working on songs and the new album, I’ve been working on trying to be a better version of myself.”

Article by Cajun Graham

So when I had the chance to speak with him about “Rock the Red Kettle”, I just had to ask, was it that self-evaluating that brought you in contact with Salvation Army? “Well the timing was such a natural fit with what I was doing with the album and accomplishing personally, that it was a “no brainer” when they asked me to be a part of their event.” You had a chance to take it a step further and actually go and volunteer at the Salvation Army in Knoxville with your wife Mandy. How was your experience? “It was definitely inspiring! Mandy had

volunteered several times before, but that was my first time. While we were there, something I had said earlier that week and probably 100 times before to my wife just struck me and just stayed on my mind the whole time. I had made the comment “There’s nothing to eat in the house”. Of course we had plenty of food in the house, but something as simple as having something to eat, I have taken for granted. The stress of where their next meal is coming from is a daily struggle for those we were serving. I was humbled. That is just one example of how the Salvation Army is meeting the needs of our community. It’s really wonderful that you were able to volunteer with your wife, what a bonding experience. What are some ways you’re teaching your daughter Annabelle to give and be more open to helping others? “I am trying to teach her by doing, not just saying. I truly believe in teaching and leading through example. She sees us volunteering and giving, so to me there’s no better way! There are so many ways to give that doesn’t have to be hard. Most people think of money when it comes time to give, but there are so many other ways to be a positive influence on someone’s life. You can donate your time, or your talents, whether you’re a graphic designer or singer song writer. It doesn’t take much to reach out to your community, just effort. Do you have any plans to volunteer down at the Salvation Army again? “We will definitely be volunteering again and we have already signed up to “Ring the Bell”. It’s at this time of year, spending time with family and friends, I pause and think about how blessed I am. When I think of those less fortunate, I think to myself, no one is immune. That could be someone I know or love.” With that being said, in the spirit of the Salvation Army’s campaign, what would

Today I was humbled…Today, Mandy and I volunteered to help serve lunch at The Salvation Army of Knoxville. I realized very quickly that I have no idea what hard times really mean. I have no idea how it feels to not know when my next meal will come, or if I’ll have a safe place to sleep tonight. I now see just how fortunate I am. But more than anything, today I was inspired. Today I was lifted up by the caring and compassionate people of The Salvation Army, and the enduring spirit of the people I met there who are rebuilding their lives and creating a new future for themselves. Today I witnessed hope. Today I saw lives being saved. The Salvation Army of Knoxville is truly making a difference in this community every day, and YOU can help them continue their service! All you have to do is buy a ticket to my upcoming concert at the Bijou Theatre on November 17th. 100% of the ticket price goes directly to The Salvation Army of Knoxville!!! Let’s do some good and have a good time! Much Love, Erick you say is your #RedKettleReason? “I would have to say it’s my way to give back to my community, to Knoxville, the city and the people who has given me so much in my life and my career, to lift up my city. I am so proud of all the Salvation Army does every day meeting the basic needs of those struggling. Another reason 100% of the proceeds from the Rock the Red Kettle Concert go directly to the Salvation Army so they can continue working and helping the Knoxville Community and surrounding areas.

In anticipation for the concert to help such a noble charity, are you excited yet for the concert? Any big plans? “I am super excited, just last night I was going through the set and trying to figure out what I was going to do! Back in February when I came to Knoxville I did 2 shows, so as I’ve said on Facebook, “This is going to be one of my last shows of the year, so bring a snack because I’m going to go all “Springsteen” on this one!” I want to go all out and make this such a special event for everyone! Let’s do some good and have a good time!

Gorgeous Gourds All Season Long Wash

Wash rind with a diluted bleach solution to kill surface bacteria and mold. Bleach disinfectant wipes are perfect for this task.

Cure

The ideal post-harvest curing environment is a warm room with good air circulation. Damp or humid weather promotes rot. A drying period of 10 days is sufficient to cure pumpkins and squash. Small gourds require two to three weeks curing. Large gourds such as birdhouse or apple take several months to dry completely. Large gourds may develop exterior mold as they cure. Mold does not damage gourds. Buff exteriors to remove mold once gourds have dried completely.

Polish

Paint and put on display. Now your pumpkins, squash and gourds are ready to display or decorate. Carving or painting pumpkins is a fun fall tradition. Paste wax puts a pretty sheen on ornamentals. Painting a coat of waterproofing varnish on birdhouse gourds will make them last several years.

RUN KNOXVILLE, RUN!

R

unners Market found their first home in an old “house” next to River Sports on Sutherland Avenue in late summer of 1995 (currently Mojoes Coffee). Kevin Pack, coming off a not-so-exciting engineering career, and his wife, Samantha Pack, shared a vision for a place where runners could come and get their gear to enjoy their passion for running and fitness. Michael deLisle, competitive runner and Knoxville Track Club advocate/contributor, hopped on board to help make it happen. Spring fever and a growing business spawned a move to the current location at Western Plaza in 1998. And, yes, we’re locally owned! Runners Market Farragut store opened in fall 2006 next to Mellow Mushroom and recently moved to the current location next to the Fresh Market.

alongside provide runners with an excellent venue for everything from a short leisurely jog to hard hill repeats. Another thing that makes this greenway stand out from the others in Knoxville is that it is not paved, but instead is a crushed gravel path that is situated on the wide tree-lined median of Cherokee Boulevard.

RUNNING ROUTES Knoxville, and the surrounding area, is an excellent place to enjoy a run all year long. The City of Knoxville and the Knoxville Track Club have partnered to help accommodate the running community by building greenways throughout the county. Hello, my name is Shantala Hill also known

as Shay. I was a License Certified Zumba instructor and taught Zumba for a couple of years. Eventually, God inspired me to develop a fitness plan that targets specific muscle groups. It also helps you build endurance and become a stronger individual through specialized workouts. I wanted to have a fitness program that not only focused on your Cardio but also worked your Abs, Legs, and Arms. And viola that is when Ca-L’a Fitness was born! Ca-L’a Fitness is a fun workout that helps eliminate weight that may be hard to loose. We never have the same workout twice and this is called muscle confusion. Through muscle confusion you are able to burn more calories, weight, and not plateau. Students left and right are receiving transformations and are loving it! Our music is clean it doesn’t contain any reference to any sex, drugs, cussing, or alcohol. Our routines do not have any inappropriate body movements, and this helps parents feel comfortable when their kids participate in the program. Ca-L’a Fitness is also contracted out with the Boys and Girls Club, YWCA, and Vine Middle School. We have certain days of the week that we teach at these locations. Ca-L’a wants to help inspire, motivate, and encourage kids to become healthy, and to take care of their bodies in a fun filled workout. We have certain choreography that the kids love to do and that makes teaching that much more enjoyable! If you are looking for a workout that is fun, effective and targets those muscles and problem areas come on out and see us and receive Your Transformation! Like us on Facebook! Fall Southern Comfort

Collard Greens with Ham Hocks

Ingredients 6 medium smoked ham hocks 3 qts. water 8 lbs. collard greens Salt 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes Rinse ham hocks. Place in large pot with water, cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for two and a half hours, or until ham hocks are tender. Cool. Remove meat from bones and place back into cooking pot, discarding any fat and unnecessary parts. Place collard greens in a sink filled with cold water and sprinkle with salt to wash out the sand. Wash again with salt and a third time without salt. Cut leaves off stalks and into thirds. Remove ham hocks from pot. Place collards in pot with ham hock liquid. Sprinkle with sugar. Top greens with ham hock meat. Cover and cook for one hour, or until tender. Add crushed pepper flakes for the final 10 minutes of cooking.

Ingredients 8 eggs 1 3/4 cups chickpeas, cooked or canned and drained (reserve cooking liquid or liquid from the can) 3 tbsp tahini 4 cloves roasted garlic - to learn how to roast garlic click here 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 1/2 tbsp sriracha 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Spiced-up Deviled Eggs 2 1/2 tsp honey 1/2 tsp salt Smoked paprika for garnish Place eggs in pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Turn off the heat and let sit for 15 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and run cold water over the eggs. The eggs are easiest to peel if they're still slightly warm. Also, older eggs peel easier than fresh. Cut peeled eggs in half with a sharp knife, dipping the knife in water between each egg so they slice smoothly. Scoop out the yolks. Reserve 4 of the yolks in bowl of a food processor. Discard the other yolks (or save them as a special treat for your dog!). Add the chickpeas, tahini, roasted garlic, lemon juice, sriracha, extra virgin olive oil, honey and salt to the food processor and process, adding the reserved chickpea liquid in small batches until mixture is smooth and easily spreadable. If you’re spice sensitive, you might want to start with 1/2 tbsp sriracha and add more to taste. Use a pastry bag with tip to pipe the hummus mixture into the halved eggs (or, if you want to be less fancy, just scoop a bit of the mixture into each egg). Dust the eggs with smoked paprika using a mesh strainer to disperse the spice neatly and evenly.

PUMPKIN RECIPES ‘Tis the season we anticipate when pumpkin flavor is found everywhere, so we found some recipes you can use all year!

Pumpkin Fritters from Gina DePalma 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin 2 large eggs 1/2 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 3/4 cup grated Grana Padano or Parmigiano Reggiano 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh flat leaf parsley Finely ground black pepper, to taste Olive oil, for frying 1. Place the pumpkin puree in a

medium bowl. Lightly beat the eggs with a fork and stir them into the pumpkin with a wooden spoon or spatula. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the puree mixture, along with the grated cheese, the parsley, and a pinch of black pepper. Use the wooden spoon or a fork to combine all the ingredients into a light batter; be careful not to overmix it. 2. Heat 1/2 inch olive oil in a heavy saute pan. Drop heaping tablespoons of the batter into the oil, flattening them slightly and turning them when they are golden brown. Fry in batches, cooking for about 2 minutes per side. 3. Drain the fritters on paper towels and serve hot.

Iced Pumpkin Loaf with Cinnamon Roasted Pumpkin Seeds from littlebitsof.com 1 1/2 cups flour 1 cup sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup pumpkin puree 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/4 cup powered sugar 2 tablespoons water 1/4 cup raw shelled pumpkin seeds (pepitas) 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon pinch of salt

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl add all of the dry ingredients; flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. Sift the dry ingredients together. In a smaller bowl mix together the 2 beaten eggs, pumpkin, oil, and the

vanilla. Once your wet ingredients are combined, pour over the dry ingredients and stir until combined. Do not overstir the mixture. Pour into a 9x5 or 10x4 inch loaf pan that has been sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake for 50 - 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for approximately 5 minutes in the pan, and then turn the pumpkin bread onto a cooling rack. 2. Keep oven heated to roast the pumpkin seeds. In a small bowl combine raw pumpkin seeds, 1/2 vegetable oil & 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Stir until pumpkin seeds are coated. Pour onto a cookie sheet and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Place in the oven for 15 minutes or until they start to brown. Remove and let cool. 3. In a small bowl combine 1 1/4 cups of powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons water. Stir until combined. Once pumpkin loaf has cooled, pour icing over to cover. Once icing has coated the top, sprinkle the roasted pumpkin seeds to cover. Let icing set and enjoy!

1. Preheat oven to 400° F. On a rimmed baking sheet, toss pumpkin with 1 teaspoon olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast, stirring occasionally, until pumpkin is golden and tender when pierced with a fork, about 15 minutes. Set aside. 2. In a medium saucepan, combine quinoa and broth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, cover and cook 15 minutes or until most of the liquid has been absorbed. Remove from heat and keep coverred for 15 minutes, then fluff with fork. 3. In a large shallow serving bowl, combine quinoa with roasted pumpkin and any juices from the baking sheet. Drizzle with remaining oil. Toss with onion, arugula, and crumbled goat cheese. [Pepitas can be found in bulk section of your Sobeys or IGA stores. Hulled sunflower seeds can be used instead of pepitas. If sugar pumpkins are not in season, use an equal amount of butternut squash.

No Bake Pumpkin Creme Brulee from spoonforkbacon.com 8 baby pumpkins, tops removed and completely hallowed out 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons superfine sugar 2 tablespoons all purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup heavy cream 5 egg yolk 1 cup whole milk 2/3 cup pumpkin puree 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice pinch ground cloves 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 8 tablespoons turbinado (raw) sugar

1. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a simmer. Add pumpkins (with lids), slightly lower heat and poach for 12 to 15 minutes or until pumpkins are tender but not mushy. Place pumpkins onto a baking sheet and place in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. 2. For filling: In a small bowl, whisk together flour, sugars and salt. Add cream and eggs and whisk together until smooth. Set aside. 3. Pour milk, pumpkin puree and spices into a saucepan and whisk together. Simmer mixture for about 7 minutes. Pour 1/4 cup of the pumpkin milk mixture into the yolk mixture, whisking while pouring to prevent the yolks from scrambling. 4. Once your mixture has been tempered, pour yolk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining pumpkin milk and whisk together. Continue to whisk mixture as it simmers to prevent scrambling and whisk until mixture begins to thicken, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in vanilla. 5. Divide mixture among poached pumpkins and refrigerate for about 2 hours or until custard sets. 6. Top each pumpkin filled custard with a layer of turbinado sugar and brulee tops with a torch. Serve. **Tip: If mixture has scrambled a little, you can strain it with a sieve lined with cheesecloth top remove all the bits of cooked egg. If this happens, vanilla should be stirred in after mixture has been strained.

unique to the Smokies, the owners of Eagle Springs Winery decided to open a fully operational honey-based winery! It doesn’t get any sweeter. Within two new respective bodies of work, States of Matter explores the push and pull of their separate disciplines and the integral factors that connect them. Complementary in their approaches, Kurtz and Oglesby create a spectrum of works that travels between paint and clay, canvas and vessel, earth and atmosphere, tactile and intangible. A native southerner, Brentwood, Tennessee artist Ginger Oglesby grew up in a near constant pursuit of creative endeavors. Drawing from her background in modern dance, Oglesby makes paintings that are as kinesthetic as they are abstract, suggesting the ephemeral nature of rhythm and movement. Atmospheric, loose and free, her paintings are a climate all their own. Conveying tension and harmony, chaos and order, Oglesby describes her process as an intuitive dance that “captures the vibrant attitudes of the human heart.” Based in Knoxville, Tennessee, ceramic artist Lisa Kurtz centers her work in her affinity for clay, calling it “a love affair with the material itself.” Exploring the wonderful, malleable qualities of clay in all its states of being, be it wet, fired, or glazed, Lisa creates pots that are both sculptural entities and functional vessels. Contrasting raw and earthy textures with smooth and polished surfaces, Kurtz’s work is grounded in its materiality. In her latest body of work, Kurtz transfigures the vessel by revealing the space inside with cutouts and voids. She piques a sense of curiosity in the viewer: what is inside? Are there surprises? Is it a glimpse into another state of matter? Please join us Friday, November 4th from 5-8 p.m. for a special evening that combines a duo exhibition with our annual Thankful Event. Meet the artists, celebrate the season with festive food and drink, and get a first look at our new holiday inventory. The show will be on display through November 26. LOCAL MUSIC SPOTLIGHT Interview Presented by: Open Chord & HUSHH

Written by: Alec Cunningham

T

he Open Chord caught up with Knoxville synthpop group Hazel to talk quirky pre-show rituals, wildflowers, and their new EP, “Emotion Synthesis”.

Hazel

Formed in February of 2016, Hazel is one of Knoxville’s newest outfits – but what the band may lack in age, they certainly make up for in spunk and charisma. Made up of brothersister duo Elijah and Hannah Cruise along with friends Cale Bramer and Tanner Rutherford, Hazel’s sound is anything but ordinary. Their infectious electro-pop sound falls somewhere between The xx and Ingrid Michaelson. Hazel has been spending quite a bit of time in the studio recently recording a new EP. Tell us about that process and how it’s coming along. Elijah: “Emotion Synthesis” is our first official EP, featuring 3-4 new unheard song deeply connected to my anxiety, depression & coping. I dug deep while writing the songs for this EP, getting personal and raw. “Emotion Synthesis” will define what Hazel is, who we want to be. We hope to give people hope through any mental state, while creating provoking synth piece with heavy vocal & lyric quality. I started writing music to deal with my anxiety and I hope through our music people can grow in better understanding of themselves. Though we haven’t released a date yet, you can count on hearing “Emotion Synthesis” in 2016.

And what about your band name? How did that come about? E: Hazel is always what Hannah wanted to be called when we were kids. We cycled through several random names such as HE, Animali, Furr, Elijah Cruise’s Wild Life Preserve. And finally, my wife suggested Hazel.

What’s the weirdest thing you all have drawn inspiration from while writing a song? E: I once wrote a song based off [the movie] “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. Weirdest song. Also, back in the day, Cale and I wrote a song about illegal dogs & wildflowers. I’ve come to see you find inspiration in everything if you look hard enough.”

For those that haven’t heard your music yet, how would you describe it?

E: A mixture of synths, folk melodies, and powerful vocals exploring emotion through synthesis.

What artists do you draw inspiration from? E: M83, The Cranberries, The Postal Service, Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine - to name a few.

You’ve been testing your new tunes out at live shows. Have any stood out as fan favorites so far? E: The song “Emotion Synthesis” always seems to hit a chord; it’s my personal favorite as well.

Do any of you have any quirky pre-show rituals you can share? E: I drink Kombucha & take off my shoes. Tanner: I pace around and hope that people love me. Hannah: I like to look at this picture before we play shows for some reason. Hah. Weird? Probably. Cale: I put a Trim Pot in my back left pocket and say Bob Moog’s name three times.

Catch Hazel at the Open Chord on Saturday, Nov. 19 for the third installment of our three-part Girl Power series, celebrating women in music. Also on the show will be Hudson K, Mojo:Flow, Luchadora, and Kristen Ford | 11/19 | $8 | All Ages | Doors: 6pm | Show: 7pm
