Stacey David

Host of the TV series GearZ on MavTV and Velocity. Meet and greet with Stacey Thurs & Fri.

Stacey David is the person that every car guy wants in the garage, helping out on their project. With decades of experience working in restoration and hot rod shops, and over 20 years on national television on two hit TV shows, Stacey has been showing people how to build cool cars and trucks for a long time. His mechanical abilities and fabrication skills have made him one of the most trusted and respected custom car builders in the world today. His incredible work and positive influence have earned him many awards and accolades from the automotive industry over the years, and he continues to work hand in hand with the OEM’s and aftermarket to keep new vehicles and parts in front of the gearhead public. Also well known for building wild, trendsetting custom vehicles like The V8 Interceptor, Sgt. Rock, and Copperhead, Stacey has inspired legions of gearheads all across the nation to “get out there and build something” and we are honored to have him here at the Pigeon Forge Rod Run this fall.

I

ntroduced in 1967 as a contender to compete in the pony car market.

The V8 Interceptor is a project that had been kicking around in my head for a long time. I have always loved the first generation Mercury Cougar and hated that they always seemed to be overlooked in the muscle car world. The Cougar is a sinister looking machine with it’s hidden headlamps and matching sequential taillights, plus it’s high-performance racing history is well documented, so it was the perfect candidate to build a serious street machine out of. On top of that, the four-legged Cougar runs down it’s dinner on a daily basis making it one of nature’s ultimate natural interceptors, so building a V8 Interceptor out of a Mercury

6

rod run magazine fall 2018

Cougar is a perfect match. Of course to call something a “V8 Interceptor” is pretty ballsy. It means that the vehicle has to be able to run down pretty much anything on the street or strip, so the heart of the project had to be STRONG. A Jon Kaase Racing Boss Nine engine with an over-the-top Hilborne fuel injection sticking out of the hood not only gives the look and power that I needed for this project, but it also let me give a subtle nod to the blown Interceptor that Mel Gibson drove in Mad Max, without building a clone or copy. The biggest reason for a project like the V8 Interceptor though, is to get people to think outside the box on their project, and realize that just because a car may have been built in the 50’s, 60’s, or 70’s, it doesn’t have to stay there…..technology wise. And while it may be true that Chevy will never build a ‘70 Chevelle with modern running gear, and Mopar will never build a modern ’69 Roadrunner, that doesn’t mean that YOU can’t... because THAT is what gearheads DO and the world is a better place because of it!

CA R D E TA I L S E C R E TS Who doesn’t love a freshly detailed car? The downer is the price tag that comes with it. While professional detailing can be cost prohibitive, there is an easy, eco-friendly, and affordable alternative. Run your vehicle through an automated wash like Vol Magic Wash, and do the interior detailing yourself either in the vacuum area or at home. All you need is a little elbow grease and a few household items, and you’ll get your car looking and smelling like you just took it to the detailers. You’ll save money and sidestep all the harsh cleaning chemicals.

THE STEPS: First, remove floor mats and vacuum them along with the upholstery, floors, dashboard, and trunk. Take the baking powder and sprinkle it on the mats and floors. Baking soda works wonders for deodorizing fabrics. The longer you leave it, the better. If you want to make your interior smell really clean, sprinkle dried herbs like lavender onto the fabrics along with the baking soda, then if you have time, leave it overnight and vacuum it the next day.

CLEANING THE SEATS: This step is essential for a good detailing job, but it’s important to remember that different upholstery will require different cleaning methods. To clean the seats, first do a thorough vacuuming, making sure to get into the cracks and crevices. LEATHER OR VINYL INTERIORS: After a thorough vacuuming, you can clean your leather or vinyl seats by mixing one part vinegar with one part linseed oil. Use a piece of cloth and rub the solution onto your seats. You’ll easily remove dirt and grime, and leave the leather/ vinyl supple and shiny. If you have mild stains on your leather/vinyl seats, you can use toothpaste to get them out. Remember to do a small test area first just to make sure the toothpaste won’t affect the dyes used in the material. If the stain on your leather or vinyl seats won’t come out with toothpaste, then use a small piece of clean cloth and gently dab on a bit of alcohol. Again, do a test area first to make sure it won’t affect the color. Bear in mind that alcohol can affect the color of the dye, and the more you use, the more likely this is to happen. So it’s a good idea to do a test area first.

If you have grease stains on your car’s floor mats, sprinkle the stains with cornstarch. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes, and then vacuum it up. Grab the can of compressed air and use it to blast out all the dust and residue in the cracks and crevices in the dashboard area, doors, center console, and gear shift. If there’s any dried-on dirt from spills, use the toothbrush to gently brush it clean.

CLOTH INTERIORS: First, vacuum the seats to get all the baking soda out of the cracks and crevices. If you have stains, mix equal parts vinegar and water and spray the mixture directly onto the stain. Let it set for a few minutes, and then blot it with a clean, wet cloth.

Use can also use the toothbrush to clean the air vent grilles. If you have managed to get everything clean and don’t need to follow-up with any cleaning solution, use the microfiber cloth to do a final cleaning of the hard surface areas. Microfiber has a way of pulling up all the bits of dust and lint, leaving surface areas super clean.

You can also use a natural detergent for stains. Mrs. Meyers Clean Day detergent is a great option. All you have to do is mix equal parts of detergent and water, apply to the stain, let it soak in for a few minutes and blot with a clean cloth.

Mix together equal parts of white vinegar and water, then spray it onto any vinyl, plastic or wood surfaces in your car that need cleaning. Allow it to soak in and wipe it dry with a clean rag. Remember that conditioning these same surfaces is important in order to protect them from sun exposure and becoming dry and brittle. To condition the hard surfaces, get the mineral oil and put it in a spray bottle or bowl. Using a clean rag, apply a small amount onto the dashboard, doors, or any other plastic, wood or vinyl surfaces. Finish by wiping off the excess with another cleaning rag. Warning: Do not use on the steering wheel, pedals or any other controls where slipperiness could pose a hazard. Also be careful not to get in on your windows.

GREEN CLEAN YOUR WINDOWS: Believe it or not, you can make your own, eco-friendly, window cleaner that works even better than the commercial brands. All you have to do is mix the following ingredients in a spray bottle: • 1 cup of water • 1/2 cup vinegar •1/4 cup alcohol Spray this solution on the windows and glass surfaces and wipe it clean with a microfiber towel! You’ll be surprised by the crystal clean, streak-free windows you get as a result!

Then, to finish, do one final vacuum on the floor mats, floors, etc., and you’ll have a clean, green, sparkling interior that looks and smells as good if not better than what you’d get from a professional detailing service. – Joanna Henning

Made in the shade!

PA I N T F I N I S H P R O T E C T I O N

Perhaps nothing ages a car or truck more than a lackluster exterior finish. Even if vehicles are only a few years old, failure to maintain the paint, tires and chrome accents can make them look worn beyond their years, potentially affecting resale value.

The environment can be a vehicle’s worst enemy. Protecting a car means being mindful of substances and habits that can compromise the exterior finish. SEEK SHADE Over time, the sun can damage a vehicle’s paint job through oxidation and premature fading. People who live in areas with especially warm climates may see the paint on their vehicles suffer considerable damage thanks to the sun. One of the easiest ways to protect a vehicle from the sun is to use sheltered parking or park in the shade whenever possible. This can help protect the paint, headlights and trim. Drivers should store their cars in their garages overnight and during daylight hours when they are home.

WASH AND DRY It’s important to routinely wash vehicles to protect their exterior finish. Use a mild cleanser designed for automobiles and a clean rag or sponge so as not to cause scratches that can cause further damage. Because minerals in tap water can be left behind through evaporation and may oxidize and damage the paint, it’s best to wipe away as much residual moisture as possible with a chamois. PAINT PROTECTION Waxing can prevent bird droppings, berries, splattered bugs, and more from sticking to the paint and wearing down the finish. Waxes come in paste, liquid and spray. Each type has a different reapplication schedule, so drivers should consult the product instructions. Vehicle owners also can invest in spray films to further protect painted surfaces. Do-it-yourself products are applied like a spray and then dry to an invisible, durable film. This helps protect against insects, gravel, sand, winter salt, and even road grime. Different manufacturers offer protection films. It is important to safeguard the exterior of a vehicle to help it look newer longer, protecting the value of the car or truck while also protecting it against the elements.

FALLFUN

Drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. To experience the full effect of fall colors in the Great Smoky Mountains, plan to visit the National Park, which is FREE for all visitors and open year round. There are plenty of great hikes and drives for the fall, but the one we recommend is the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. This scenic drive will take you through old-growth forests and offer views of the Roaring Fork creek—with leaves in dozens of hues all around! 1. 2. Take a hayride in the Smokies. If a long hike through the park isn’t really your style, or if you’re bringing kids on your Pigeon Forge vacation, no problem! There are other options for enjoying the beauty of the great outdoors and the magnificent fall foliage in the Smokies—like a guided hayride! These relaxing hayrides will take you through another great Smoky Mountain drive: the Cades Cove Loop Road. And this fully narrated tour will give you the chance to sit back and soak in the crisp mountain air while learning the ins and outs of the park. 3. Smokies from a bird’s eye view. A hayride is great, but if what you’re after is some of the best views of the Smoky Mountains you’ll ever experience, then you need to take your guided tour to the sky with a helicopter ride. Scenic Helicopter Tours has been offering these tours over the mountains since 1972. You can choose from a variety of tour lengths, depending on your schedule and preference, but all of them will give you chance to see the stunning fall colors from the best seat in the Smokies! 4. Enjoy the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival. Another great thing about visiting Pigeon Forge in the fall is the lineup of all the seasonal events taking place this time of year. In September alone, there are dozens of events scheduled, including the Mountain Life Festival at the Mountain Farm Museum and the 17th annual Fall Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament. But another fun event that you can enjoy all through the season is the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival. The streets of Pigeon Forge will be transformed right

before your eyes with harvest-themed displays and activities. Enjoy craft shows, artistic scenes, and more through October 31, 2018. 5. View handmade items at the Rotary Club Craft Fair. Another fall favorite event is the 39th annual Pigeon Forge Rotary Club Craft Fair at Pigeon Forge’s Patriot Park. The fair will start Sept. 29 through Oct. 27 and offers you the unique opportunity to view and purchase locally crafted gifts from skilled craftsmen. Woodwork, Native American jewelry, quilts, and stained glass are just a few of the one-of-a-kind crafts you will find at this Pigeon Forge attraction this fall. 6. Try a refreshing glass of apple cider at the Apple Barn. A little outside Pigeon Forge, the Apple Barn is worth the drive to Sevierville for a refreshing sip of a classic fall beverage: apple cider! Try it cold or hot at the Apple Barn and Cider Mill; you can even purchase the Aspen Mulling Spices in their general store so you can make your own batch of cider back at the cabin! 7. Choose a cabin with amazing mountain views. Finally, one of the absolute best ways to enjoy fall when you’re in Pigeon Forge is to stay in one of our cabins with mountain views. Your hike or tour through the Smokies will come to an end, but your view of the gorgeous fall foliage doesn’t have to when you stay at one of these amazing cabins. Sip a cup of coffee on your cabin’s rocking chair porch, or take advantage of your private outdoor hot tub—these are just a couple ways you can enjoy fall this year during your stay in Pigeon Forge!
