The Educational Benefits Of Summer Camp

B

oth of our sons have participated in several summer camps the past few years. Somewhat belatedly, I asked them the other day if they liked any of the camps. Fortunately, both said yes. “What did you like about them?” I asked. They both agreed on three qualities: they enjoyed learning new things; they liked meeting other people who shared their interests; and the camps were fun. The first summer camps originated in Europe in the late 19th century. These “holiday” camps brought children together to enjoy nature and fellowship while they made tree houses, sang songs, flew kites, and played adventure games. Some current summer camps continue this experience of learning about nature and outdoor activities. However, the variety of educational offerings in summer camps has mushroomed in the past few decades. For instance, my sons participated in Camp Webb where they learned more about science, how to do digital photography, the basics of creative

“It is a real art to construct educational activities that are enjoyable; many summer camps have perfected this combination.” writing, and using Legos to build robots. Other places offer immersion programs in a foreign language that allow students to live in a different country for a month. Tennessee offers a variety of Governor’s Schools for high school students. Although these month long residential programs are called “schools”, they are really more like specialized summer camps. Students can learn in more depth an amazing variety of skills: computational physics, guitar, filmmaking, and international studies, to name a few. There are hundreds of other possibilities for summer learning, as evidenced by current listings in this issue of Knoxville Parent. The educational aspect of these summer camps is appealing not only to students but also to their parents. Students can also meet other students that share a common interest. This fellowship and collaboration on a common theme for a week or a month can help produce enduring friendships. My oldest son found a friend in Science Camp two years ago; they have continued their collaboration as they independently learn more about chemistry. My youngest son has participated in several basketball camps. He has made friends that he continues to see in various interscholastic basketball leagues. Finally, summer camps can be fun. We should not overlook this engaging aspect of an experience that promotes learning and friendship. Since summer camps are voluntary, their approach has to be interesting and entertaining; otherwise, parents would not recommend these camps to other parents. It is a real art to construct educational activities that are enjoyable; many summer camps have perfected this combination. Writing this article makes me long for summer camps for adults. I wish my wife and I could take a week off from work, take the kids to their favorite summer camp, and then fly off to Italy for a gourmet cooking camp or to Hawaii to learn how to surf board. That would be my idea of lifelong learning! However, I am glad my children have a multitude of opportunities in the summer to learn, make friends, and have fun.

Growth Opportunities For Parents Of Overnight Campers by Kathryn Rea Smith, Ph.D.

O

vernight camp represents an important developmental milestone for children. It is a chance for them to learn that they can function independently. They get to sleep in an unfamiliar place, eat different foods, adapt to a new routine, meet people, make activity choices, and keep track of a bulging duffle bag of gear—all without help from a parent. Camp provides a variety of personal growth opportunities for children but also for the parents who stay behind. In this article, I will describe three opportunities for personal growth that arise for parents of campers. Opportunity for self-reflection: Did you ever have the experience of going to overnight camp? If so, what was that like for you? What were the positive and negative aspects? Were there ways that going to camp helped you become more independent or grow in another way? Did you miss your family? If so, how did you cope with the feelings of homesickness? If you could re-write your past, would you go to that camp again? As you recall the past, consider whether there are ways in which you have projected your camp experience onto your child in a way that makes it difficult to empathize with him or her. For example, if you were an introverted child who felt overwhelmed by a camp experience that was too stimulating, is it difficult to identify with your

“The camp experience foreshadows future developmental milestones for the child, such as leaving for college or moving into an apartment, along with the associated “empty nest” transition for the parents.” gregarious child’s enthusiastic anticipation of being with people all day, every day? Opportunity for letter writing: In the electronic era of e-mail, text messaging and twitter, in which few people write actual letters, camp is the perfect time to resurrect the wonderful tradition of putting pen to paper. Even if the camp your child attends offers the option of sending daily emails that are printed and distributed to campers, consider writing and mailing letters instead. A handwritten letter is a true gift from the heart—for the recipient, seeing the loved one’s handwriting brings an immediate feeling of connection. A parent can grow from the experience of expressing thoughts and feelings to his or her child in a letter, and the letter itself serves as a concrete sign that the parent was holding the child in his or her thoughts during the separation. Make sure your camper packs stamped addressed envelopes and writing paper in case he or she has time to send a letter from camp. Opportunity to anticipate the future: Having a child go to summer camp for a week or more is a chance to reflect on the reality that he or she will not live at home forever. The camp experience foreshadows future developmental milestones for the child, such as leaving for college or moving into an apartment, along with the associated “empty nest” transition for the parents. Try to access the feelings you have as you think about your child being at camp without you, realizing that mixed emotions are quite common. For instance, you may feel pride that your child is mature enough to actually go to camp, anxiety about whether he or she will be okay without you, sadness at missing him or her, and/or relief at having a break from the daily responsibilities of parenting. Let your feelings ground you in the moment by adding depth and meaning to your present day relationship with your child. The practice of noticing and reflecting on your feelings about separation now will help pave the way for coping with the more permanent physical separations from your child in the not too distant future. As parents, we send our children to camp because we wish them to have the chance to test their wings away from the nest. At the same time, often without realizing it, we are testing our own ability to survive without them in the home, hopefully learning something about ourselves in the process. Keeping Kids Active by Barry Van Over

A

“Healthy, physically active kids are more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful. Physical competence builds self-esteem at every age.”

nyone who’s seen kids on a playground knows that most are naturally physically active and love to move around. But what might not be apparent is that climbing to the top of a slide or swinging from the monkey bars can help lead kids to a lifetime of being active. As they get older, it can be a challenge for kids to get enough daily activity. Reasons include increasing demands of school, a feeling among some kids that they aren’t good at sports, a lack of active role models, and busy working families. And even if kids have the time and the desire to be active, parents may not feel comfortable letting them freely roam the neighborhood as kids once did. So their opportunities might be limited. Despite these barriers, parents can instill a love of activity and help kids fit it into their everyday routines. Doing so can establish healthy patterns that will last into adulthood. Benefits of Being Active When kids are active, their bodies can do the things they want and need them to do. Why? Because regular exercise provides these benefits: • strong muscles and bones • weight control • decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes • better sleep • a better outlook on life Healthy, physically active kids also are more likely to be academically motivated,

alert, and successful. And physical competence builds self-esteem at every age. What Motivates Kids So there’s a lot to gain from regular physical activity, but how do you encourage kids to do it? The three keys are:

1. Choosing the right activities for a child’s age: If you don’t, the child may be bored or frustrated. 2. Giving kids plenty of opportunity to be active: Kids need parents to make activity easy by providing equipment and taking them to playgrounds and other active spots. 3. Keeping the focus on fun: Kids won’t do something they don’t enjoy. When kids enjoy an activity, they want to do more of it. Practicing a skill, whether it’s swimming or martial arts classes, improves their abilities and helps them feel accomplished, especially when the effort is noticed and praised. These good feelings often make kids want to continue the activity and even try others. Be sure to be active yourself and support your kids’ interests. If you start this early enough, they’ll come to regard activity as a normal, and fun, part of your family’s everyday routine. The Difference Between Sedation And Anesthesia By Audreu Madigan

S

ome children can become anxious when they come to the hospital for treatment or medical procedures. As a result, they may not be able to sit still or relax enough to receive care or complete the necessary procedure. To help your child feel more comfortable, the doctor may suggest sedation. What happens when a child is sedated? Your child will be given medication to help him relax or “go to sleep” depending on the test. This will help him tolerate medical procedures easier to achieve better test results. In most cases with sedation, your child may not even remember the procedure at all. If he experiences pain, medicine to relieve the pain may also be given. Is sedation the same as anesthesia? No, with general anesthesia the patient is unresponsive, even to pain, and, in most cases, will require assistance from a breathing machine. A sedated patient will continue to breathe on his own. What are the benefits of sedation? In addition to not requiring a breathing tube, your child will be admitted as an outpatient, which usually allows for a shorter hospital stay. As with general anesthesia, specialty trained doctors, as well as experienced registered nurses, will be caring for your child while he or she is sedated. There are three levels of sedation: • Minimal sedation – is given to reduce anxiety during the procedure. Your child will remain awake and may respond normally when spoken to. This sedation may be used for quick procedures such as starting an I.V. or putting in a catheter. • Moderate sedation – is used for minor emergency procedures. When this is provided, your child will respond to stimulation, but he or she may be sleepy and unsteady. • Deep sedation – is typically used for longer procedures where “holding still” is important such as MRIs or CT scans. It is also given for procedures that may be painful or uncomfortable such as bone marrow tests or I and Ds (incision and drainage). In these cases, a pain medicine will be given prior to the procedure. How do you get this service? Pediatric sedation is unique to Children’s Hospital, which is a good reason to bring your child here. Your pediatrician can discuss with you the possible need for sedation during your child’s procedure or test. Not all tests at Children’s Hospital allow for sedation. If there are any questions, your doctor will address them with you. Is sedation right for every child and every test? No, sedation is only needed for some tests and only right for some children. Depending on the age, medical problems and test your child is having, a doctor trained to

“Your pediatrician can discuss with you the possible need for sedation during your child’s procedure or test.” administer sedation will evaluate your child prior to the procedure or test. If your child has certain medical problems, such as airway issues, or if the doctor has concerns about him being able to be sedated safely, your child may be referred to general anesthesia. Not every test requires sedation. Many can be completed using distraction techniques, such as iPads and play, offered by our Child Life Specialist. However, should your child need sedation, take comfort as a parent knowing that Children’s Hospital’s doctors and nurses are here to make your child’s hospital experience easier and as pain free as possible.

“America’s Secret City”

Discover Oak Ridge this spring with your kids Story and Photo by the Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau.

A

re you always on the lookout for fun and interesting places nearby to take your children during Spring Break or even for a “staycation?” Oak Ridge is a convenient and educational city that offers kid friendly attractions and historical sites, all within a 20-minute drive of Knoxville. In today’s economy, staying close to home has become a staple for many families, but there are inexpensive and free activities your family can participate in while learning about the Secret City at the same time. School age children and adults will find it fascinating that Oak Ridge was built as a topsecret city in 1942 by the U.S. government for the Manhattan Project during WWII. The city was enclosed behind a fence at that time, and not even on a map until 1949. At the height of the project, more than 75,000 people lived and worked in Oak Ridge, not knowing what they were working on. They only knew that they were helping the war effort. Plants were built; guards were posted at all entry points into the city; and houses were built as quickly as one every half hour. It was a town that worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until one Tuesday morning in August of 1945 the residents of Oak Ridge woke to find a newspaper

“The City of Oak Ridge has 14 parks and 11 greenways throughout the city, with hiking trails, recreational fields, playgrounds, and bike trails.” headline declaring peace. It was only then that the community itself learned what they had been working to build in the Secret City. The history of Oak Ridge lives on through the American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE), which tells the story of Oak Ridge’s role in the Manhattan Project. It also explains the scientific and technological advances that Oak Ridge has made since the end of WWII. AMSE has an impressive history room, which includes hundreds of historic photographs taken by renowned World War II photographer, Ed Westcott. The museum also features rotating exhibits and the “Exploration Station” with selfdirected activities that explore light and color, sound, problem solving, static electricity, robotics, vision and more. AMSE is open Monday-Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. The admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children 6-17 years old and free for children under five. The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge offers a hands-on cultural and educational center for kids of all ages, highlighting the pioneer and Manhattan Project history that Oak Ridge is known for, as well as offering entertainment in the form of hands-on exhibits such as a child-size doll house, a rainforest, and pioneer log homes. The young and young at heart can spend hours viewing the model railroad setup at the museum. The Knoxville Model Railroad Club is headquartered at the museum, and they offer camps during the summer months to teach children how to build their own layouts. The museum also houses an original red caboose, which is the centerpiece of the DIY Network-installed train garden that operates once a month and during the Christmas season. The Children’s Museum is open daily and the admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children 3 and up and free for children under 3. For more trains, the Secret City Scenic Excursion Train affords visitors the chance to take a 12-mile tour through the once secret K-25 Plant site and the Blair Community. Historians explain the significance of the plant and one of the pre-war communities, as they explore the beautiful countryside of Oak Ridge. Tickets are $19 for adults and $15 for children ages 3 through 12. If you’re looking for outdoor family activities, the University of Tennessee Arboretum offers over 250 acres of trees, shrubs and flowering plants that offer wonderful views, scenic trails, and a relaxing atmosphere. In addition, the City of Oak Ridge has 14 parks and 11 greenways throughout the city, with hiking trails, recreational fields, playgrounds, and bike trails. Oak Ridge also boasts a Skate Park and two Disc Golf Courses for older children. Aquatic And Summer Pool Safety Tips By Alicia Williams, National Fitness Center Aquatics Director

I

f you have children, you already know that swimming is the most popular summertime activity. As a parent, you can follow some easy steps to put your mind at ease and keep your kids safe around the pool allowing you to enjoy these activities as well. The American Red Cross recommends talking to your children and setting rules before visiting a pool. It’s important to make sure that children have a healthy respect for bodies of water, so that they are cautious about approaching them on their own. Children 36 months or younger should always be supervised around water. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that 64% of reported pool accidents in the US occur with children between the ages of 1-3 years old. Parents should establish and enforce water safety rules with their children. Here are 10 easy Aquatic & Summer Pool Safety Tips from National Fitness Center and Court South to help you have a happy and safe summer swim season! Aquatic & Summer Pool Safety Tips 1. Use the Buddy System: Always swim with a buddy. Do not allow anyone to swim alone. 2. Safety First: Swim in designated areas with certified lifeguards or responsible adults on duty. 3. Swimming Lessons: Ensure that everyone in your family knows how to swim well. Enroll your children in age appropriate swim lessons. 4. Start Safe: Young children or inexperienced swimmers should wear personal flotation devices, but they should not rely on these devices. 5. Be Watchful: Maintain constant supervision, avoid distractions (phones, tablets, books) when supervising children around water. 6. Follow the Rules: Establish rules for your family (rules may be different based on ability) and enforce them without fail. 7. Protect Your Skin: Wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15, and limit the amount of direct sunlight you receive between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. 8. Keep it Covered: If you have a home pool, install and use barriers around your pool. Safety covers and pool alarms can provide

“Being safe around water is largely a matter of planning ahead.” additional protection. 9. Be Prepared: Have the appropriate safety equipment, first aid kit, reaching or throwing equipment and life jackets. 10. Save a Life: Become CPR/AED, water safety and first aid certified. Check your local NFC for certification class information. Being safe around water is largely a matter of planning ahead. It’s important to know how to be safe while you’re in or around water. If an accident or emergency situation happens, the best thing you can to is to remain calm and to have a plan. If a child is missing, check water area first. Seconds count, and knowing how to react to a situation can mean the difference between preventing a death or disability. As a parent, one of the most important things you can do is to become CPR certified. At National Fitness Center, the basis of our aquatics programs begins with teaching water safety. All aquatics staff are lifeguard and CPR/AED certified by a nationally accredited organization. National Fitness Center offers summer programs for kids that are sure to make it the best summer ever! Our new Signature location offers 3 pools AND an indoor fun pool with slides, so aquatic fun can be enjoyed all year round. Swimming lessons are offered for all levels and ages at all locations with aquatic facilities. National Fitness Center also hosts the NFC Sharks swim team! This program is designed for more competitive swimmers or swimmers who still need additional instruction or refined competitive stroke technique work. This program is fun, but challenging for all swimmers. In all programs, kids will learn safety practices that will keep them safe around the water. For more information about pool and water safety and how to be a responsible parent, be sure to visit the Red Cross website at redcross.org. Alicia Williams is the National Fitness Center Aquatics Director. Alicia is a water safety specialist, lifeguard trainer, and CPR/AED certified instructor. She has 12 years experience of competitive swimming including a TN state high school swimming championship.

The Halves And The Half Nots By Mike O’Hern, Center Director of Mathnasium of West Knoxville

W

hat in the world makes fractions so darned difficult for our students? Sure, fractions can be intimidating, but I really don’t think they have to be. Like so many other math issues, I think it’s about how the student is brought into the subject. At some point in third or fourth grade his teacher is going to say, “Next week we will start on fractions!” Cue the music: Dum-dum-duuuuuuuum! His heart is struck with terror, because every one of his older friends and/or siblings has told him to dread fractions. FRACTIONS! Even the word is never spoken outside of math class! What if, instead, you start introducing fractions in kindergarten and all the way through second grade, so that, when he starts in school his reaction will be, “Cool! I like fractions!” And he will, because he will know that fractions are all about doughnuts, cookies, and all kinds of things that come in dozens. So to start, we never use terms like numerator or denominator. Those are scary and mathematical. Just start with “half,” and teach him that half means

“Why do doughnuts come in a dozen anyway? Why not ten?”

“two parts the same.” Another way to talk about it is to say that half means being fair. Break a cookie in two different sized pieces, and ask if that’s half. Would it be fair to share it that way? No? Then, that’s not half. Next, move on to half of two. If we have two balloons, and we want to share them fairly, how many balloons do we each get? One? Okay, so half of two is one. What would be half of six? Ten? We will get used to half of even numbers pretty quickly. Now, you can move to odd numbers. What’s half of three? This may take some thought, or you may need to demonstrate. Put three cookies between the two of you and say, “if you can find a way to share these cookies fairly, you can have half of them.” Once he realizes that he can break one in half, count the whole cookies, and count the half, and he’ll see that half of three is one-and-a-half. Of course, then move on to higher odd numbers. Now, here’s the really cool part, though it will have to wait until he’s learned how to add numbers. What’s half of 26? A little tougher, right? Well, 26 = 20 + 6, so half of 26 = half of 20 + half of 6. Half of 26 = 10 + 3 = 13. Cool, huh? Half of 25 = half of 20 + half of 5 = 10 + 2½ = 12½. But, what about the dozens? Glad you asked! Now is when we introduce the term fraction. Get a dozen doughnuts, and have him decide how many you each get, if you share them equally. “Okay, half of twelve is six, sure, but, what if we want Mom to get a fraction of the doughnuts, too?” “Mom to get a what of the doughnuts?” “Oh, I’m sorry, fraction is just a fancy way of saying part or portion.” So, he figures out that you each get four doughnuts, so you say, “So, one third of twelve is four!” “One third?” “Yes, there are three equal parts, so we call those thirds.” And, what if we want your sister to have a fraction of the doughnuts? He correctly computes that you each get three, so you say, “A-ha! So, one fourth of twelve is three!” Yes, one fourth is one of four equal parts. Alright, here are just a few words for no extra charge. Why do doughnuts come in a dozen anyway? Why not ten? I think it’s because of fractions – twelve can be divided evenly into 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, or 12 portions. Ten can only be divided evenly into 1, 2, 5, or 10 portions. Smart, huh? Don’t you just love fractions? As owner and director at Mathnasium (a math learning center with locations in West Knoxville and Chattanooga (mathnasium. com/westknoxville) for the past five years, Mike has extensive experience teaching children and young adults the foundations of math concepts that are crucial to building their confidence and engagement with math throughout life.
