The Beginning - Day 1

Breaking the ice, Allison Baty tosses a “question ball” on the first day of class as she tries to adapt to the campus lifestyle. “My first day of camp was awesome, I met all new people,” said Baty.

What’s YOUR Story ? These students are all a part of the personal writing class. Grace choose to review Aspen Leaf for assignment. She sat down in the restaurant and observed the store, tried the food, and talked with the owner. Once she got back to the classroom, she updated her blog and started her next project.

McKenzie also reviewed Aspen Leaf, taking pictures of the store and interviewing the workers. She then continued to work on her obituary.

Posing for the picture with her group of friends is Carolynn Luong. During the scavenger hunt they had to spell “Iowa” on the Pentacrest lawn. “The hill was so steep I almost fell over,” Luong said.

Left: Knocking on the University President’s door, are Devanshee Patel and Jordan Trowbride. Their team won the camp’s scavenger hunt with 41 points. “My legs hurt a lot at the end of the scavenger hunt but it was worth it because we won,” Trowbride said. Right: Gazing at the display of cupcakes, Anna Reinhart decides on what to eat. She was reveiwing a caramel and butterscotch cupcake at Molly’s Cupcakes. “Honestly it was kind of dry,” Reinhard said.

Jordan reviewed the Java House, trying the coffee, taking in the atmosphere, and taking a close look at the pricing. She then worked on writing her own obituary and going over who she is.

Right: Zipping through the fountain, Abby Jacobsen and Kelsi Williams escape the freezing water. The girls got wet to receive bonus points for the scavenger hunt. “It was fun being able to run free, have a good time and act like a kid again,” Williams said.

(Bottom) Awestruck at the sight of the studentathlete training room inside the Carver Arena is Preston Pagel and Grace Rozembajgjer. Pagel expecially enjoyed seeing the basketball court. “It was really cool to see this facility, I’d love to have (tour guide) Matt’s job,” Rozembajgjer said.

Heading down to the Carver Hawkeye Arena, Yearbook and Sports on Steriods workshop students had an exclusive tour around the various facilities in the arena. In addition to the basketball court and wrestling room, students also visited the recreation room, locker rooms, the media room, and the weight room, which weren’t open for typical tourists. This was all possible thanks to Matt Weitzel, the Associate Director of Athletic Communications. Before leaving the next day, the students went to Currier Hall for to sing their hearts out and make last minute memories. They belted out iconic bops such as “Fergalicious”, “No Scrubs”, “22”, and “Party in the USA”. Technical difficulties ensued with the audio speakers, therefore counselors Lawyren and Amanda crafted a makeshift Q&A covering college life. Counselors Mo and Jasmine eventually saved the day, allowing for students to sing all night.

He’s my childhood hero,” Jacobsen said.

“I walked a ton so I don’t feel that bad about eating a lot of the dorm food,” Lashbrook said.
