From The Desk Of The Chief of Police The holidays are in full swing and I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am proud to say that the police department turkey drive this year rendered eleven (11) full turkey dinner’s to donate to Beacon Church as they assist in the fight against hunger and helping to feed families in need each and every year here in Galloway Township. You may have noticed that many of our Officers have facial hair as they are participating in No Shave November. The Police Department donates cash to a charity each November and this year we are supporting the Egg Harbor Township Police Athletic League in the 5th annual Shop with a Cop. This program is a one day event where uniformed police officers and volunteers assist needy children in At-
lantic County with their holiday shopping. This program is free of charge to the children and their families; each child is given breakfast, a visit with Santa followed by a parade of fire trucks and police cars to the Wal-Mart in Mays Landing where they are given a $100 gift card to shop. This is made possible through the donations by police themselves. Each year Galloway Township Police Department participates in this event and children from Galloway participate. It is not just about the shopping, it is to make the children feel loved during a special time of year and to help create a bond with the police officers. I am very proud that our men and women donate their money and participate in such a worthy cause. As I have stated in previous issues of the Patriot please remember to lock your vehicles and to secure any and all valuables especially during the holiday season. With busy schedules, holiday shopping and gatherings it is very easy to leave items inside your vehicle overnight with the thought that you will remove them at a later time. Please take the time to remove such items as occurrences of theft and criminal activity are prevalent this time of year. Another important note is to please bring in packages that have been delivered to your home as soon as they arrive.

GTMS Student Council supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month by creating pink ribbons and selling the ribbons during lunch periods in October. Student Council earned $415 for their efforts. On November 12, GTMS Student Council President Gracie Harris presented Lauren Crenshaw, Gilda’s Club Special Projects Director, with a donation of $415.
The Galloway Patriot newspaper publishers, the Knutson family, donated hundreds of DVD movies to the Galloway branch of the Atlantic County Library on Thursday, November 19 2015. The collection of DVD’s includes many different genres of topics consisting of popular titles. These DVD’s are available for people to check out at no cost. The library has a large selection of DVD’s. At the same time, the library also accepted copies of Galloway Publisher Chuck Knutson’s new book, “Direct Action”. This book covers the basics about gun safety and home defense tactics. The book is available now for checking out.
A Mother’s Thank You!
Two weeks ago, my heart nearly stopped said Jennifer DiLuzio....she got a call that Bryce, her 18 month old son, had a seizure while at daycare. He was unresponsive and began turning blue. Bryce was rushed to the ER and treated right away. Jennifer said about his day care, Children Academy, “I knew he was in the right place but never knew the extent.” “There are no amount of thank you’s that can be said of their greatness. When illness struck Bryce without notice, they were there to hold my baby boy in their arms. Their reactions went without hesitation and were right on key. Their caring touch and loving hearts saved my baby boy. Not only did they stand by Bryce but were there for me too. They stayed with me at the hospital until family arrived, they were my rock and strenth through my weakest point.” She said, “they truly are my hero’s, they are the reason I can hold my little guy still. I will be forever grateful to the Children Academy staff, Ms. Lucie, Mr. Femi, Miss Azhanna and Ms. Bridget. I now kknow that when I drop my 18 month off every morning he is more than safe and loved.” A family truly indebted to the quick response and well trained staff the DiLuzio family thanks you.
Assumption Regional Catholic School held their 26th Annual Indoor Christmas Craft Fair Saturday & Sunday November 14th & 15th from 9-6pm Saturday and 9-4pm Sunday. On Sunday, Santa Claus was there taking pictures and enjoying the children who came to tell him, their Christmas wishes. Everything craft you could imagine was available in the cafeteria, gym and hallway. There was something for everyone including tables set up with various crafts for children to do. The weekend brought in huge numbers of Galloway Residents in search of that perfect Christmas gift. Great weekend to kick off the Christmas season.

Bah-Humbug to Holiday Stress For many, the holiday season is filled with gift shopping, decorating, special family and work events, guests and traveling. And did I mention….stress? We have heard this over time that in addition to the stressors of daily life, the added responsibilities and commitments that are innate to the holiday season can, frankly, add even more stressful. The good news is that there are a number of ways we can take charge, manage our stress and yes, be merry with “comfort and joy.” Here are some ways to relieve holiday pressure and maintain balance. Dr. Nina’s What You Need To Know: To Relieve Holiday Pressure and Maintain Healthy Balance Planning is key. Start by creating a “to-do” list and calendar to track all events (shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating, school concert, office holiday dinner and please include some time to “enjoy” relaxing at home this holiday). Time is our most important commodity. Therefore, we must use it wisely. Keep the list and calendar out in the open to help you and yours track the events. And make sure to be discriminating and rank things-to-do by “has to,” “nice to,” “does not need to” be done. Don’t stress if you do not get past what “has to” be done. Setting realistic goals will help to reduce the circuit overload. Bah-humbug (Toxic Tales) & Ho-Ho-Ho (Olive Branches). Holiday gatherings may put us with some people we avoid throughout the year. And too while family times are to be joyous – that just isn’t always so as family dynamics can be complicated. Also, holiday stresses can make it harder to deal with that “someone” – or those “traditions” (i.e making that recipe exactly like “grandma’s” even though you felt it was inedible or, being “there” at a certain time because it is always “the way it has been done”). If it is a sticking point, experts suggest making a list of reasons “we should” and “shouldn’t” engage in these events. Perhaps there is another approach. Whatever, the key is to be conscious about what you’re doing. And remember the power of extending olive branches; to pace yourself (you may not have to stay for 4 hours or all 3 days); and too, the courage to maintain safe boundaries for a healthy celebration.
Stick to a budget. Creating a winter wonderland without depleting our bank accounts or maxing out credit cards may seem challenging. Research shows the best way to manage holiday spending is by creating a budget and staying committed to it. When it comes to shopping for presents, think outside the “gift” box. The best presents are not the most expensive, but the most thoughtful. Aromatherapies. Research has confirmed that lavender produces slight calming, soothing, and sedative effects when its scent is inhaled. While out shopping, consider scheduling an aromatherapy massage. Or, mix some vanilla extract in our morning coffee, light a scented candle of vanilla or lavender, add some essential oils to our bath -- or dap a small amount of on our linens. Exercise. Don’t wait for the New Years to make this part of your “need to-do” list. Start now. Not only is breaking out a sweat good for our heart and can keep those inches off of our waistline, studies have shown that it can also boost our mood for up to 12 hours – and help us get good sleep!
Meditate. Meditation is a rich moment or collection of moments that we escape the noise and demands of our world to focus fully in the wonder of stillness and a knowing. In addition, research has shown that it can change brain waves, the way our brain cells make connections, actual structures (thickening some areas while making others less dense), and the molecules that send signals (neurotransmitters). Laugh out loud. Psychologically, having a good sense of humor and laughing may permit us to have a better perspective on things by seeing situations in a “more realistic and less threatening light.” Physically, laughter can put a damper on the production of stress hormones—cortisol and epinephrine. And by doing so, it can help us to relax. Additionally, studies have shown that a good LOL or ROFL—texting slang for “laugh out loud” or “rolling on the floor laughing”—can relax our muscles for up to 45 minutes after. As we step into this year’s holiday season, let’s add to the heart of our planning… to appreciate the moments. We live in an age of distractions with demanding deadlines – and even more so during the holidays with added commitments – but life still unfolds in the present. With some planning, it is in the “now” that we can maintain balance and find added joys. I recently read a wise statement that one of life’s sharpest paradoxes is that our brightest future hinges on our ability to pay attention to the present. To be in the now-the present--Bill Keane crafted the beloved truth that is shared within many treasured sentiments, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, which is why we call it the present.” So from my home to yours…sending treasured sentiments – with bah-humbugs to stress! Enjoy your holidays. It is great to see support from the community for those that have sacrificed and are committed to protecting America. Here is a little information and a few photos from three events which we were able to attend. Our day started at Assumption Regional where the children did a wonderful presentation during an early morning assembly. After the assembly, veterans were presented with hand made cards thanking them for their service. The cards were extremely nice and thoughtful. While we could not make events at other schools, the Galloway Patriot, the Knutson family and the Marine Corps Direct Action Team, would like to thank all the schools, teachers and students that participated in Veterans Day events. It makes it all worth it to see such strong support from these amazing children.
The annual Christmas Bazaar at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton took place on Friday, November 13, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. There were crafters, delicious food, baked goods and fantastic raffles. Lunch and dinner was available on Friday, and Breakfast, lunch and dinner was offered on Saturday. A great time had by all.
